MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This
mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as
found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Three years ago, as we made the shift in the Eucharistic Prayer from
“Benedict” to “Francis,” we named a “treasure” in our tradition. From
apostolic times, the Church has sent disciples on mission with a mandate
to proclaim the gospel. Paul and Barnabas and Timothy come to mind as
men invested with responsibility for community and mission. First we see
bishops, “overseers,” good men appointed by the acclaim of their people,
the center of leadership, of prayer, of word and sacrament. Their
territories were small initially, small enough to get everyone into one
room and for the bishop to know everyone’s name.
In time, men were appointed to function as a council of advisers,
”elders,” or presbyters. That isn’t a comment on chronological age, rather
it indicates the maturity of their wisdom and faith. Before long, and only
when the bishop was absent, some of these men “stood in” for him to do
what bishops usually did: preaching, presiding at Eucharist. The deacons
had a strong and visible role in liturgy and service, especially in the care
of the poor, but were gradually overshadowed by the new importance of
the presbyter. As the Roman Empire first tottered and then collapsed
completely by 476, bishops increasingly became civil servants to maintain order and dispense justice. Conferences and duties summoned
bishops away from their home posts, and presbyters were entrusted with
sacramental and preaching duties, even though at one time runners
were sent out from the bishop’s Mass to bring fragments of the host to
drop into chalices as a sign of the church’s unity around its bishop.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
.Artesanos preparan alfombras de flores y plumas de quetzal en Guatemala
para las fiestas de esta semana santa. Grupos de fieles practican su
papel de personaje judío o romano para los vía crucis en México,
Texas, Chicago, y tantos lugares más. Fraternidades penitenciales
están preparándose espiritualmente para cargar con imágenes sagradas
y pesadas por calles españolas. Muchos más están preparando sus
maletas para irse a la playa o las montañas donde, probablemente,
nunca recordaran el nombre de Jesús.
Estos últimos se perderán las liturgias más significativas de nuestra
fe cristiana; ritos llenos de movimiento desde afuera de la Iglesia hasta
adentro. Están llenos de símbolos que nos llaman a la verdad de la
existencia cristiana y humana: somos personas paradójicas. Comenzamos
entre los hosannas del Domingo de Ramos, pasamos por las dolorosas
imágenes del Viernes Santo y terminamos entre juegos de oscuridad,
fuego y agua en la Vigilia Pascual. Muchas veces honramos al Señor
y tantas veces lo negamos, pero él nunca deja de llamarnos. En fin
nos recuerda que la condición humana es sagrada y profana a la vez.

Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma
T HE P ASTOR’ S C OLUMN
Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
God is mercy; therefore, He is merciful! In last week’s Luke’s
Gospel we were presented the parable of the Prodigal Son. Quite
frankly, the main point of the parable may get a little lost with the
“drama” of the two sons. The parable reflects God’s way and that is
He is merciful to all of His lost children, whether at home or away from
Him. And today’s Gospel of John further illuminates the forgiving grace
of the Lord. The Pharisee, in their righteousness conjure up the “test”
through the “woman caught in the act of adultery.” And present the
“problem” to Jesus for his judgment under the Law of Moses to have
the woman stoned for her sinful act. What we do not see or clearly
denote from the “story” is that the husband would be the person to
bring forth the charges of adultery—we see no husband. Typically this
type of charge was handled quietly and not before a crowd. Jesus, as
a man, did not have the authority under either Jewish or Roman law
to condemn the woman. Of course, Jesus is well aware of the human
heart and his purpose as the Son of God—he did not come to condemn,
but to save. Rather than responding, he quietly writes on the ground,
why? Perhaps to give the accusers time to reflect upon what they were
asking him to do. Jesus tells the accusers “Let the one among you who
is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Further silence. . .
and the crowd, beginning with the Elders leave and the woman is left
alone with Jesus. Jesus does not condemn her, he simply tells her
“Go, and from now do not sin anymore.” He did condemn her, he did
not chastise her, he understood her situation and the hurt she had
experienced and with love, gentleness and mercy addressed her need.
The Gospel for today is a vivid reminder that we should take to heart
and live the words of the Our Father, “forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive who trespass against us.” In this Jubilee Year of Mercy let us
recall the words of the Our Father when we are tempted to sin, gossip,
accuse or do anything that is counter to the spirit of our Lord. Also, no
matter how unworthy we may feel because of past sins or the near
occasion to sin, look to the Lord for he is merciful and his mercy will
sustain us through all adversity or trail of faith. . . as Saint Paul tells is
in the Second Reading. . . surrender everything to Christ.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
Dios es misericordia, por lo tanto, El es misericordioso! En el
Evangelio de la semana pasada San Lucas nos presenta la parábola del
Hijo Prodigo. Probablemente el punto principal de la parábola puede
perderse en el drama de los dos hijos. La parábola refleja la manera de
cómo Dios es misericordioso con todos sus hijos que están perdidos,
ya sea en el hogar o lejos de El. En el evangelio de hoy según San
Juan ilumina aun más la gracia del perdón de Dios. Los Fariseos, en
su rectitud, son probados a través de la mujer que fue encontrada en
adulterio. Y presentado el problema ante Jesús para su juicio bajo la
Ley de Moisés de tener la mujer apedreada por este pecado. Lo que no
vemos o no narra la historia es que el esposo debería ser la persona
que la acuse de adulterio –no vemos al marido. Típicamente este tipo
de cargo se hacia silenciosamente y no ante un Jesús, como hombre,
no tiene la autoridad ni ante la ley romana ni Judía para condenar a la
mujer. Por supuesto, que Jesús conoce perfectamente el corazón
humano y su propósito como Hijo de Dios –no vino a condenar sino a
salvar. En lugar de responder, El escribe en el piso en silencio, ¿por
qué? Quizás para dar tiempo a los acusadores de reflexionar en lo que
le estaban pidiendo que hiciera. Jesús les dice: “El que esté sin pecado
que tire la primera piedra” Se escucha el silencio de la multitud y
comienzan a retirarse empezando por los viejos y dejan a la mujer sola
con Jesús. Jesús no la condena simplemente le dice: “vete, y no peques
más”. El no la condena, entiende su situación y el sufrimiento que ella ha
experimentado y con amor, gentileza y Misericordia enfatiza su necesidad.
El Evangelio de hoy es un recordatorio vivo de que debemos tomar a
pecho las palabras del Padre Nuestro, “Perdona nuestras ofensas como
también nosotros perdonamos”. En este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
recordemos estas palabras cuando somos tentados por el pecado, por
el chisme, cuando acusamos a otros o cuando hacemos algo que va
contra el Espíritu del Señor. También, no importa que indignos nos
sintamos por los pecados que hemos cometido o por las ocasiones en
que hemos estado cercas de pecar, volteemos nuestra mirada al Señor
quien es misericordioso y su misericordia nos sostendrá a través de las
adversidades y las pruebas de fe...como nos dice San Pablo en la
Segunda Lectura...entreguémosle todo a Cristo.

De San José únicamente sabemos los
datos históricos que San Mateo y San
Lucas nos narran en el Evangelio. Su más
grande honor es que Dios le confió sus
dos más preciosos tesoros: Jesús y María.
San Mateo nos dice que era descendiente
de la familia de David.
Una muy antigua tradición dice que l9 de
Marzo sucedió la muerte de nuestro santo
y el paso de su alma de la tierra al cielo.
Los santos que más han propagado la
devoción a San José han sido: San Vicente
Ferrer, Santa Brígida, San Bernardino de
Siena (que escribió en su honor muy
hermosos sermones) y San Francisco de Sales,
que predicó muchas veces recomendando la
devoción al santo Patriarca. Pero sobre
todo, la que más propagó su devoción fue
Santa Teresa, que fue curada por él de
una terrible enfermedad que la tenía
casi paralizada, enfermedad que ya era
considerada incurable. Le rezó con fe a
San José y obtuvo de manera maravillosa
su curación.Hacia el final de su vida, la
mística fundadora decía: "Durante 40 años,
cada año en la fiesta de San José le he
pedido alguna gracia o favor especial, y
no me ha fallado ni una sola vez. Yo les
digo a los que me escuchan que hagan
el ensayo de rezar con fe a este gran
santo, y verán que grandes frutos van a
conseguir". Y es de notar que a todos los
conventos que fundó Santa Teresa les
puso por patrono a San José.
