domingo, ya que cientos de miles
se reunieron a lo largo de la Quinta
avenida para el 58° Desfile anual del
Día de Puerto Rico el 14 de junio.
En el timón como Gran Mariscal estaba
la ganadora del premio de la Academia, el
Emmy, el Grammy y el Tony, Rita Moreno. Se
unió a Lin-Manuel Miranda, creador de In the
Heights y Hamilton, quien fue galardonado
con el Premio “Nuestro Orgullo” del desfile. El

The yoga clients headed to Brahman Yoga
to breathe and extend, but the elevator they
stepped into and which kept them suspended
for 10 minutes had other ideas.
The incident last December cost studio
owner Nick Velkov some clients, as they were
disinclined to return to the West 145th Street
building within which he runs the practice.
“What protections do we have that our
building is in good order? How do I make
sure my building won’t exploit [me]?”
asked Velkov of a panel of city agency
representatives and elected officials who
hosted a town hall meeting for small business
owners at the Isabella Geriatric Center this
past Thurs., Jun. 11th. “It is very important for
small business development that the building
conditions are safe and welcoming.”
Velkov opened his studio in June 2014 and
said that he has already encountered several
problems related to poor building conditions.

heat during the winter and even cut off the
water supply without warning in one instance

operation had proven daunting, he said he
would not back down.
“If we allow negligent landlords to

middle class will have much more difficult
time re-emerging.”

Statement
on a
Campaign
S
tatement Arts has launched
an IndieGoGo campaign in
support of Expanding Horizons, its
college preparatory program at the
United Palace of Cultural Arts.
Started in 2012, this program mentors
underserved high school seniors with an
eye towards the arts. College Prep students
are guided through every step of the college
application process including SAT preparation
and essay drafting. The program boasts a
100% success rate for college acceptance.
“Statement Arts changed my life,” says
student Diana Fernández. “They helped me
find my confidence and discover who I am
and who I want to be.”
Budget cuts in the New York City school
system have caused for a decrease in music
and arts programs and Statement Arts seeks
to restore their presence in students’ lives
throughout the year – including in the summer
months.
“There is a real need for a more focused,
hands-on college preparation class for
aspiring artists and musicians, especially
for kids living at or below the poverty line.
Our students can’t afford the private lessons
or coaching necessary to prepare for the
rigorous college audition process,” explained
Statement Arts founder Liza Politi. “We are
trying to level the playing field to allow our
kids further exposure to the arts.”
Statement Arts has kicked off its summer
arts program with a
fundraising
appeal
through an IndieGoGo
Campaign, and the
group’s goal is to raise
an additional $15,000
dollars.
“We are fortunate to have prestigious
partners in the Rudin Foundation, the LMCC
and the NYC Citizen’s Committee, but every
year a large portion of our program is funded
through
private
donations,” said Alexis
Petrus, who serves
as a board member.
“Without our private
donors, we would be
unable to open our doors over the summer.”

Iniciado en 2012, este programa facilita
tutores para los estudiantes desatendidos
de último año de preparatoria con la mirada
puesta en las artes. Los estudiantes son

ensayos. El programa cuenta con una tasa de éxito
del 100% de aceptación universitaria.
“Statement Arts cambió mi vida”, dice la
estudiante Diana Fernández. “Ellos me ayudaron
a encontrar mi confianza y a descubrir quién soy y
quién quiero ser”.
Los recortes presupuestales en el sistema
escolar de la ciudad de Nueva York han provocado
una disminución en los programas de música

verano con un llamado de recaudación de fondos a
través de una campaña IndieGoGo, y el objetivo del
grupo es recaudar un adicional de $15,000 dólares.
“Tenemos la suerte de contar con socios
prestigiosos de la Fundación Rudin, LMCC y el
Comité Ciudadano de la ciudad de Nueva York,
pero cada año una gran parte de nuestro programa
es financiado a través de donaciones privadas”, dijo

atalino Cruz was in the
courtyard that morning.
He was tending to the shared space at 75
East 116th Street.
Then, at 9:31 a.m. came the first blast.
Cruz was about 100 feet away.
“I heard a loud noise coming from
the underground,” recalled the
superintendent.
“A
few
seconds later, the explosion
occurred.”
He was hit by
debris, causing him to
lose
consciousness
and wind up in the
emergency room.
The blast on March
12, 2014 would level
two adjacent apartment
buildings at 1644 and
1646 Park Avenue. It
killed 8 people, injured
about 70, left 100 families
homeless and displaced scores of
businesses.
At the time, it was reported that residents
had smelled a gas odor prior to the explosion.

Safety Board (NTSB) issued
its final report, finding that
that both the city and gas
supply company Con Edison
were at fault.
The federal regulators, who spent
over a year on the investigation, cited Con
Edison’s failure to properly maintain and
repair a faulty gas pipe and also found that the
city had neglected to address ongoing erosion
under the pipe – which had remained broken
for over eight years.
In its report issued on Tues., Jun. 9th,
the NTSB concluded that the two main
causes were the failure of a defective
fusion joint which had been installed by
Con Edison in 2011, and sewer line breach
that went unrepaired by the Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) since 2006.
The latter breach, said NTSB, eroded the
ground supporting the gas main.
Board investigators noted that repairs were
not prioritized.
But Con Ed and the city both have disputed
the board’s findings, and claim that the other
party was fully responsible.
“To be clear, not all of the participants
involved in this investigation reached the
same conclusion concerning the sequence
of infrastructure failures that led to the
explosion,” said Con Edison in a statement.

A
s a child, she was categorized
as at risk.
Not too much was expected from the only
daughter of Dominican immigrants in a
working class neighborhood.
“I was [considered] at risk to success,” said
Ferreras. “Often, we have been told about
things we couldn’t do.”
Today, as the Chair of the City Council’s
powerful Finance Committee, she oversees
billions of dollars of city spending.
Growing up, Julissa Ferreras-Copeland
knew she could do more – and she did.
When she was just 14 years old, then

appointed her to serve on the Corona Youth
Council. She doesn’t seem to have stopped
since.

person of color and the youngest City

This past Fri., Jun. 12th, she held forth
during a “Girls Town Hall” meeting as part
of the Women of the World Festival (WOW)
at the Apollo Theater.
The festival was a four-day, multidisciplinary
celebration
of
performances, conversation
and activism focused on
honoring and celebrating
the power of women and
girls.

in
collaboration
with London’s
Southbank
Centre,
this
year’s
festival
was presented at the Apollo
and at the City College of New
York of the City University of
New York (CUNY). In addition,
local restaurants participated in
“WOW Bites!,” a series of offsite forums which included lunch

Though Friday’s presentations touched
on topics as diverse as politics, science,
sex, fashion, and power, recurring themes
centered on questions of identity, belonging
and empowerment.
For Editor-in-Chief Tan, the lure of media
proved a powerful assertion of all three.
During a panel on body image, self-esteem
and the role of media for which she served
as moderator, Tan recalled that as a young
girl, she felt like a bit of an outsider growing
up in a predominantly white community in
Syracuse.

Finanzas del Ayuntamiento, supervisa los miles

Al crecer, Julissa Ferreras-Copeland sabía que
podía hacer más, y lo hizo.

entonces presidenta del condado de Queens,

Ayuntamiento”, como parte del Festival Mundial
de las Mujeres (WOW por sus siglas en inglés) en

El festival fue una celebración multidisciplinaria

The Uptown Renaissance continues
apace. This past Tuesday, the High Bridge opened
after 45 years and a $60 million renovation. The
High Bridge is not any old bridge. In fact, it is
New York City’s oldest bridge, built in 1848 as
a vital link in the aqueduct system that brought
freshwater from upstate to New York City. For
over a century the venerable bridge connected
Washington Heights and the Bronx. However, the
bridge was closed during the 70’s due to decay
and disrepair.
That was the past. Today the High Bridge
is once again connecting communities and
providing a scenic walkway for both pedestrians
and bike riders alike. The newly opened High
Bridge will not only bring Washington Heights
and the Bronx closer but will attract visitors from
all over the world. Bronx Borough President
Ruben Diaz Jr. put it best, “downtown Manhattan
may have the High Line, but uptown, we have
the High Bridge.”
Uptown’s own Lin-Manuel Miranda, the
creator of Broadway’s ‘In The Heights,’ received
the Puerto Rican Day Parade ‘Pride’ award. The
iconic Rita Moreno was the parade’s grand
marshal this year. By the way folks, don’t forget
that the Uptown Arts Stroll is in full swing.

he answered the phone to the
worst imaginable news.
When Juanita Morgan picked up the
receiver, it was to hear that her son had died.
It was Christmas Day, 1999.
The news came in a rush – her son William
Dean died under unclear circumstances in a
Canadian penitentiary facility.
Nine years earlier, her son Leon, then
21, had been shot dead at a bar on Lenox
Avenue.
By a 16-year-old boy.
Morgan is far from alone.
To raise awareness against gun violence
and to urge against future loss of life, she
joined with other mothers for a full day of
advocacy this past June 11th.
The event was organized by Harlem
Mothers S.A.V.E. (an acronym for Stop
Another Violent End) and included Public
Advocate Letitia “Tish” James, members of
the New York Police Department (NYPD),
representatives of insurance provider
Healthfirst and the New York Knicks.
“Let’s take back our community,”
explained Jackie Rowe-Adams, Co-Founder
and President of Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E.,
which seeks to combat gun violence. “Let’s
help these mothers who had a loss and help
them heal.”
Morgan’s experience is one Rowe-Adams

violence.
First, it was Anthony, killed in a Harlem
grocery store at the age of 17. Some years
later, Tyrone was shot in Baltimore by a
13-year-old.
In 2006, Rowe-Adams and other mothers
founded Harlem Mother S.A.V.E. The
movement has expanded through the years to
include relatives of victims across the city and
the country. The group’s members assumed
the responsibility of sharing their stories,
engaging residents and fighting to keep their
community. Safe.
“We were tired of [just] blaming the police
and elected officials,” said Rowe-Adams.
Several dozen demonstrators marched from
the organization’s headquarters on West 128th
Street along Frederick Douglass Boulevard to
Holcombe Rucker Park on 155th Street. The
caravan of pro-peace demonstrators was led
by Public Advocate James.
“Guns down, peace up!” they chanted
together as they held up peace signs.
NYPD officers also participated – a
partnership James cited as key.
“We have more in common than not,”
said James. “It is not us versus them. We
are all in this together.”

Lurie School in Inwood on Mon., Jun. 8th,
to note the success of his Universal Pre-K
(UPK) program, one of the signature policies
of his administration.
About 70,000 New York City families
had received UPK slots for the 2015-16
school year, said de Blasio, with 70 percent
of families getting placed in their first-choice
E
program and 82 percent in one of their top
three choices.
“This is a proud moment for us all, and
it’s an exciting one for tens of thousands of
parents whose children are about to start out
on the right path in life,” said de Blasio.
“Pre-K for all is the centerpiece of our
agenda to confront inequality in our city, and
come September, every family seeking a seat
for their child will have one for the very first
time,” he added.
City Councilman Ydanis Rodríguez, who
joined de Blasio and Deputy Mayor for
Strategic Policy Initiatives Richard Buery at
P.S. 5, said that in Northern Manhattan, the
number of UPK seats has increased from less
than 550 during the 2013-2014 school year to
nearly 2,000 seats in the current school year.
“Today’s announcement means an even
greater number of our children will gain
benefits that will create a deeply impactful,
long-lasting effect in their future,” said
Rodríguez.
De Blasio made free, full-day Pre-K a key
focus of his campaign for mayor and secured
a commitment of $1.5 billion over five years
for his Pre-K expansion from the State
Legislature last year.
Parents with children enrolled in free, fullday pre-K save an average of $10,000 on
annual childcare costs, said de Blasio.
While at P.S. 5, the mayor presented an
admissions offer to an Inwood family of
quadruplets — Minerva, Oliver, Abril and
Antonio Capellan — that would attend Pre-K

hey found their calling- and
each other- with film.
Maritza Meléndez and Josefa Jaime are
both Washington Heights photographers
looking to capture the beauty of their home
city.
Each of them uses their respective lenses
to capture uptown’s scenic allure from a
different vantage point.
Jaime takes photographs of striking
Hudson River sunsets that local residents
might already be used to marveling at,
while Meléndez is obsessed with snapping
views that New Yorkers could easily miss,
such as gargoyles and cornerstones on
buildings, and statues hidden in niches.
“Much of the beauty in New York City
lies above people’s heads,” said Meléndez.
“People are often too busy rushing
around to even pay attention or notice,” she
remarked. ”It’s all there, you just have to
look up.” The work of Meléndez and Jaime is
currently featured in a joint photography
exhibition, titled “My World, My New
York,” which can be seen on weekends

part of this year’s Uptown Arts Stroll.
Meléndez said that many locals who see her
photos are surprised to learn that particular
shots were taken in Northern Manhattan. “I have a photo of a gargoyle that’s on a
building at 181st Street and Fort Washington
Avenue,” said Meléndez. “I’ve had people
see the photo and ask me, ‘When were you
in Europe?’”

capturarlo inmediatamente para que otros lo

En años recientes, Jaime frecuentemente
se encontró en su casa cuidando a su madre
enferma. La terraza de su apartamento en
bustling city, said Jaime. “People tell me they don’t always stop
to appreciate the views around here,” she
remarked. “If you don’t happen to live near
the river, you might not even see the sunset.”
Jaime attended the High School of Art and
Design, where she first became enamored
with photography.
“The camera became the perfect vehicle for
me to not only appreciate what was happening
around me, but also to immediately capture it
for others to enjoy,” she said.
In recent years, Jaime frequently found
herself homebound to care for her ailing
mother. The terrace of her Washington
Heights apartment overlooks the Hudson
River, and she was inspired to begin taking
pictures of the fiery sunsetws that unfolded in
her view. “What drew me to sunsets is that they’re so
fleeting,” said Jaime.
“It’s not like a lovely work of art that’s
always there,” she explained. “You only have
a few minutes to capture them
and then they’re gone.”
For Meléndez, who was
diagnosed with rheumatoid
arthritis at the age of 26,
photography serves as therapy
as well as a professional
endeavor. Faced
with
limited
mobility due to her ailment,
Meléndez began taking
pictures to combat inactivity
and bouts of depression.
“It was difficult for me to
even leave the house at times
due to the arthritis pain, so
when I went on photography excursions,
I viewed the pictures as trophies of my
achievement,” said Meléndez.
Both Jaime and Meléndez are just
starting to get recognition for their photos,
and said they found it gratifying that others
are interested in their work.
“I take pictures for myself first,” said
Meléndez. “It’s even better to have them on
display and have others appreciate them.”
The “My World, My New York”
photo exhibition will be on display on
Saturdays and Sundays in June at The
Grinnell Community Room, located at
800 Riverside Drive and 158th Street in
Washington Heights. Viewing hours are
between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.‎
A closing party will be held on June 28
at 2 p.m.

artritis, así es que cuando me fui
a excursiones de fotografía, vi las
fotos como trofeos de mi logro”, dijo
Meléndez.
Tanto Jaime como Meléndez
justo están comenzando a recibir
reconocimiento por sus fotos, y
dicen que se sienten gratificadas de
que otros estén interesados en su
trabajo.
“Primero tomé fotos para mí”,
dijo Meléndez. “Pero aun es mejor
tenerlas en exhibición y tener a otros
que las aprecien.
La exhibición “Mi Mundo,
Mi New York”, estará en
exhibición los sábados y
domingos en junio en el
Grinnell Community Room,
localizado en el 800 de Riverside Drive
y la Calle 158 en Washington Heights.

future dialogue.

the Parks Department has announced
that it will host a public art exhibition
along the esplanade leading to the
bridge.
The exhibit is comprised of
contemporary sculpture by nine artists
from the group 14 Sculptors.
OH SIT! 14 Sculptors Consider the
Chair will be on view in Highbridge Park in
northern Manhattan through Nov. 8th.
The artists sought to respond imaginatively
to the notion of sitting or using a chair.
OH SIT! is framed as a command and looks
to ask the viewer to really consider the concept
“chair” both objectively and subjectively.
As the release explains, “In a frantic world,
finding a chair can be almost impossible
and settling comfortably into one can be an
enormous satisfaction.”
14 Sculptors is a group of professional artists
who seek to create a forum for experimental
sculpture and principally installation artworks.
The non-profit tax exempt organization has
been functioning under the auspices of the
New York Foundation for the Arts for the past
42 years.

immigrant populations,” said Hernandez,

“Mayor Bill de Blasio has made it a
priority of his administration to help small
businesses thrive,” added Julie Menin,

Consumer Affairs (DCA).
She explained that in response to
concerns expressed by business owners, the
administration had established an initiative
that helped reduce avoidable fines. Instead,
owners have the opportunity to “cure” some
violations without paying fines.
“Over the past year, the Department of
Consumer Affairs has reduced the amount of
fines to small businesses by one third, which

of these businesses,” said Menin, urging
business owners to visit the DCA website’s to
learn about applicable inspection guidelines.

adding the department sought to boost the
attractiveness of storefronts and sidewalks,
and would look to add bike racks and benches
as needed.
“If you want to increase activity in front of
your building, we can help you with that,” she
said.
Panel members stressed that the success
of small businesses directly contributed to
the city’s prosperity, and was instrumental in
helping to narrow the income gap.
“This administration has been very keen on
fighting inequality,” said Hernández.
“We have these services and you need to
take advantage of these services,” he urged
attendees. “Our goal is [to help you] build the

families will spend more
time outdoors. Exposure to the
sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV)
rays increases the risk of skin
cancer, which is why proper sun
protection is essential. In fact, the
sun’s UV rays are responsible for
about 90 percent of nonmelanoma
skin cancers and 86 percent of
melanomas.
“Exposure to UV
radiation is directly
linked to all three
forms of skin cancer,”
said Perry Robins, MD,
president of The Skin
Cancer
Foundation.
“By adopting good sun
safety habits families
can enjoy summer outdoor activities
without increasing their skin cancer risk.”
The Skin Cancer Foundation offers the
following tips to help enjoy a sun-safe
summer:
At the Beach
•Use a broad spectrum sunscreen daily. For
extended outdoor activity, use a waterresistant broad spectrum (UVA/UVB)
sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Reapply every two hours or after swimming
or excessive sweating.
•Cover up with clothing. Look for high-UPF
(Ultraviolet Protection Factor) swim shirts
or rash guards, and choose bathing suits that
cover more skin, like one-piece suits and
long trunks. Make sure to apply and reapply
sunscreen to exposed areas of the skin not
covered by fabric. To help avoid missing
spots apply sunscreen before putting on
your bathing suit. When shopping for highUPF clothing, look for The Skin Cancer
Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.
• Avoid tanning. There is
no such thing as a safe tan,
because tanning itself is
caused by DNA damage to the
skin. In addition to increasing skin cancer
risk, tanning also leads to premature skin
aging, including wrinkles, leathery skin
and age spots.

Remind kids to seek the
shade. Advise kids to play in shaded areas to
limit UV exposure. Check with counselors
to see if there are adequate places for
campers to seek shade during outdoor
activities taking place between 10 AM and 4

Car windows don’t provide complete
sun protection. Though UVB radiation is
effectively blocked by glass, more than 60
percent of UVA radiation can pass through
windows. UV-protective film, also known as
window film, blocks out up to 99.9 percent
of UV radiation. If you have window film
installed, remember that it protects you only
when the windows are closed. When shopping
for window film, check to see if the product
has The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of
Recommendation.
Drivers beware. Nearly 53 percent of
skin cancers in the US occur on the left, or
drivers’ side of the body. Don’t forget to
apply sunscreen, particularly when spending
extended time in a car that has no window
film.
Additional Skin Cancer Prevention Tips
•Do not burn. At any age, a person’s risk for
melanoma doubles if he or she has ever had
five or more sunburns.
•Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreen
should be used on babies over the age of six

a magazine, the young woman of Filipino
descent realized that the norms of beauty
were greater than any one definition.
She has since sought to be part of
amplifying those standards, pursuing an
editorial career that led her to the helm
of the 70-year-old magazine for young
women.
“Seventeen is the place where everybody
should feel like they belong,” said Tan.
Other discussions explored were how
to prepare and empower young women to
assume and sustain leadership roles in all
fields, and how to pursue careers in science
and technology.
“My job is to encourage young women
to run for political office,” explained
Running Start’s Susannah Wellford, whose
organization helps young women interested
in politics to acquire applicable skill sets.
The non-partisan Running Start was
founded in 2007 in an effort to educate and
engage girls and women on public service.
“Politics is the most direct way to make
change,” she argued.
CCNY President Lisa Staiano-Coico’s
interests were forged early.
Recognized nationally as a prominent
educator and researcher in microbiology
and immunology, Dr. Staiano-Coico’s
inspiration to study science came from a
second grade teacher, who provided her
young pupil with a book on rocks and
minerals.
She acknowledged that she had
encountered opposition along the way, and
recounted being told a number of times that
she didn’t belong in the field because of her
gender.

But Dr. Staiano-Coico would have none of it.
She assured her audience that being a
scientist had proven to be “a lot of fun” and had
provided the opportunity to pursue a variety of
interests.
“It is never boring,” she said. “I can follow
my curiosity.”
She urged those in attendance to persist.
“Don’t ever give up your seat at the table to
anybody,” she said.

Sophie Houser have certainly run with their
own big idea.
After attending Girls Who Code, a 7-week
intensive computer science program, the two
created a video game called Tampon Runner.

shows you can be anything you want and be
comfortable being yourself.”

“If they were found guilty, that means

than 100 years old,” added Juan Cepeda. Cepeda, who has lived in East Harlem
for 16 years, laid the blame on the aging
infrastructure of the neighborhood and
negligent local building landlords.
“It is, in part, the landlord’s fault for not
reporting,” he said “They wait to the last
minute to make repairs. They don’t want
to do any maintenance and rather have the
problems continue.”
Cruz said he was not surprised that there
were conflicting views.
“That is the reality,” said the super. “They
[are] blaming one another.”
Dimitri Gatanas is the owner and operator
of the nearby Urban Garden Center.
The 20,000 sq.ft. outdoor center is located
on East 116th Street and Park Avenue, just
under the Metro North Railroad tracks. The
family has served as a garden retailer for
three generations, and for months after the
explosion, the business struggled to keep
open.
To mark the one-year anniversary of the
explosion, Gatanas planted a cherry tree at
the site of the tragedy to honor the victims.
