Message from our Pastor
MEDIATOR DEI ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS XII
In the course of the liturgical year, besides the mysteries of
Jesus Christ, the feasts of the saints are celebrated. Even
though these feasts are of a lower and subordinate order, the
Church always strives to put before the faithful examples of
sanctity in order to move them to cultivate in themselves the
virtues of the divine Redeemer.
We should imitate the virtues of the saints just as they imitated
Christ, for in their virtues there shines forth under different
aspects the splendor of Jesus Christ. Among some of these
saints the zeal of the apostolate stood out, in others courage
prevailed even to the shedding of blood, constant vigilance
marked others out as they kept watch for the divine Redeemer,
while in others the virginal purity of soul was resplendent and
their modesty revealed the beauty of Christian humility; there
burned in all of them the fire of charity towards God and their
neighbor. The sacred liturgy puts all these gems of sanctity
before us so that we may consider them for our salvation, and
"rejoicing at their merits, we may be inflamed by their
example."[153] It is necessary, then, to practice "in simplicity
innocence, in charity concord, in humility modesty, diligence
in government, readiness in helping those who labor, mercy in
serving the poor, in defending truth, constancy, in the strict
maintenance of discipline justice, so that nothing may be
wanting in us of the virtues which have been proposed for our
imitation. These are the footprints left by the saints in their
journey homeward, that guided by them we might follow them
into glory."[154] In order that we may be helped by our senses,
also, the Church wishes that images of the saints be displayed
in our churches, always, however, with the same intention
"that we imitate the virtues of those whose images we
venerate."[155]
But there is another reason why the Christian people should
honor the saints in heaven, namely, to implore their help and
"that we be aided by the pleadings of those whose praise is our
delight."[156] Hence, it is easy to understand why the sacred
liturgy provides us with many different prayers to invoke the
intercession of the saints.

III. Las fiestas de los santos
En el curso del año litúrgico, no sólo se celebran los misterios
de Cristo, sino también las fiestas de los santos que están en los
cielos. En las cuales, aunque se trate de una categoría inferior y
subordinada, la Iglesia, sin embargo, pretende siempre
proponer a los fieles ejemplos de santidad que les muevan a
revestirse de las virtudes del mismo divino Redentor.
que se nos proponen como ejemplo
Porque, así como los santos fueron imitadores de Jesucristo, así
nosotros hemos de imitarles a ellos, ya que en sus virtudes
resplandece la virtud misma de Jesucristo. En unos
resplandeció el celo apostólico, y en otros la fortaleza de
nuestros héroes llegó hasta el derramamiento de su sangre; en
unos brilló la constante vigilancia en la espera del Redentor, y
en otros la virginal pureza del alma o la modesta suavidad de la
humildad cristiana; en todos, en fin, era ferviente la
ardentísima caridad para con Dios y para con el prójimo.
La sagrada liturgia pone ante nuestros ojos todos estos
esplendores de santidad para que los contemplemos
provechosamente y, «pues festejamos sus méritos, emulemos
sus ejemplos»[153]. Conviene, pues, conservar «la inocencia
en la sencillez, la concordia en la caridad, la modestia en la
humildad, la diligencia en el gobierno, la vigilancia en la ayuda
de los que trabajan, la misericordia en socorrer a los pobres, la
constancia en defender la verdad, el rigor en la severidad de la
disciplina, a fin de que no falte en nosotros ningún ejemplo de
buenas obras. Estas son las huellas que nos dejaron los santos
al regresar a la patria, para que, siguiendo su camino,
consigamos también su felicidad»[154].
Mas, para que hasta nuestros sentidos se muevan
saludablemente, quiere la Iglesia que en nuestros templos se
expongan las imágenes de los santos, siempre, sin embargo,
movida por la misma razón, de que «imitemos las virtudes de
aquellos cuyas imágenes veneramos»[155].

Mas hay todavía otra razón para que el pueblo cristiano rinda
culto a los santos del cielo, a saber, para que implorando su
auxilio «seamos ayudados por la protección de aquellos con
cuyas alabanzas nos regocijamos»[156]. De esto fácilmente se
deduce por qué ofrece la sagrada liturgia tantas fórmulas de
oraciones para impetrar el patrocinio de los santos.

What our Catechism teaches us on Euthanasia / Que nos ensena
nuestro Catecismo sobre la Eutanasia
For a correct moral judgment on euthanasia, in the first place a clear
definition is required. Euthanasia in the strict sense is understood to be
an action or omission which of itself and by intention causes death, with
the purpose of eliminating all suffering. "Euthanasia's terms of reference, therefore, are to be found in the intention of the will and in the
methods used.(EVANGELIUM VITAE)(n 65)
2276 Those whose lives are diminished or weakened deserve special
respect. Sick or handicapped persons should be helped to lead lives as
normal as possible.
2324 Intentional euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It
is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect
due to the living God, his creator.
Para un correcto juicio moral sobre la eutanasia, es necesario ante todo
definirla con claridad. Por eutanasia en sentido verdadero y propio se
debe entender una acción o una omisión que por su naturaleza y en la
intención causa la muerte, con el fin de eliminar cualquier dolor. « La
eutanasia se sitúa, pues, en el nivel de las intenciones o de los métodos

2276 Aquellos cuya vida se encuentra disminuida o debilitada tienen
derecho a un respeto especial. Las personas enfermas o disminuidas
deben ser atendidas para que lleven una vida tan normal como sea possible.
2324 La euthanasia voluntaria, cualesquiera que sean sus formas y sus
motivos, constituye un homicidio. Es gravemente contraria a la dignidad
de la persona humana y al respeto del Dios vivo, su creador.

sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not
lose
anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day.
For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and
believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last

Brief commentary:
The three theological virtues that bind us to God, and which Paul often
emphasized, are faith, hope and love. Today, on the feast of ‘All the
Faithful’ – more popularly known as “All Souls Day” – all three of these
virtues converge in the telling of the Christian good news. It is fortunate
that this feast should fall on a Sunday this year, since every Sunday is an
echo of Easter Sunday, when Christ rose triumphantly from the grave.
At
the heart of the Christian Gospel is faith, confidence and trust in the God
“who loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son…not
to condemn the world, but that the world may be saved through
him” (John 3:16).
compassion that the Law, the Torah, calls for. As a Jew, Jesus inherited
this grand ethos, which was the result of centuries of composition and
reflection. Yet the Law was rather broad and encompassing just about
every aspect of life, guiding everything from agriculture to marriage,
from ritual to economy. By Jesus’ time there was a concern about a core
principle that would offer the Law a guiding theme and interpretative
vision. The question was famously posed to the great Rabbi Hillel, who
died in about 10 BC. He was challenged to articulate the whole law
while standing on one foot. The wise rabbi did so, using one sentence:
“What is hateful to you, do not to your neighbor; the rest is commentary;
go and learn it.” When the question was posed to Jesus, no doubt he
would have remembered texts like today’s Exodus reading that calls for
justice and compassion toward both Israelite and foreigner. Yet, he
chose his response from two other great Jewish texts: “You shall love
the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your mind” from Deuteronomy 6:4-9, recited twice daily by Jews. And
from Leviticus 19:9-18, he added its companion commandment: “You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.” For Jesus, these two
commandments are really two sides of the same coin. The Ten
Commandments themselves unite commandments dealing with our
relationship toward God and toward neighbor. But Deuteronomy and
Leviticus take it further: justice is the basis but not the highest principle
of our relationships…it is love. For Jesus, this is the core principle; this
is the vision and theme that is behind all divine revelation. The letter of
1 John (4:21) would describe it thus: “And this commandment we have
from him: Whoever loves God, must also love his brother.” Matthew’s
Sermon on the Mount and the Judgment of the Nations both assert this
principle: “whatever you did for the least of my brothers you did for
me.” Therefore, both Judaism and Christianity are about practice, and
not just theory or creed. And this concrete practical daily practice is
love: “Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love” (1
John 4:8). Love is the true creative, affirming, healing, liberating,
empowering, transforming, power of our lives and of our world. Love
created the universe, love raises the dead, and love feeds the hungry and
clothes the naked, cares for and defends the vulnerable, and gives itself
daringly without self-interest. And as Paul would assert: “Love never
fails!” (1 Corinthians 13). No greater theme is more attested to in the
Scriptures and in the Christian tradition. The wholehearted love of God
and neighbor is truly the greatest commandment of the God who is
infinite love.
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
The Law, the Torah, is the sacred anthology that guides relationships
for the Jewish people. During Jesus’ time the quest for a
binding vision and foundation for all the Torah led the scholar’s interest

frecuentemente enfatizo, son la fe, la esperanza y el amor. Hoy, en la
fiesta de los fieles difuntos, estas tres virtudes convergen en la
proclamación de la buena nueva cristiana. Es afortunado que esta
fiesta tenga lugar en un Domingo este año, ya que cada Domingo es
un eco del Domingo de resurrección, cuando Cristo resucito
triunfante sobre la muerte. En el corazón del Evangelio cristiano esta
la fe y confianza en Dios “que tanto amo al mundo que dio a su hijo
unigénito…no para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea
salvo por el” (Juan 3:16). Fe en el único verdadero Dios vivo implica
una auto-donación radical a Dios, encomendando nuestro ser
completo a el, y una reorientación de nuestras vidas – porque se

que tanto nos ama, que ponemos nuestra fe y esperanza. Nuestras
vidas son de el. También son las vidas de cada persona, y las de los
quienes están ya mas halla de nuestro alcance, pero no de nuestra
esperanza, nuestro amor y oración. El cristiano es una persona de
esperanza, quien vive de la certeza y luz interior que “si vivimos o
morimos, pertenecemos a Cristo” y esto es lo que importa; o como lo
profesa el libro de Sabiduría, “Las almas de los justos están en las
manos de Dios,” las manos del Buen Pastor. Creemos con la Iglesia
que en la muerte “la vida no termina sino es transformada.”
Ciertamente, Dios – que nos creo de la no-existencia – nos puede
resucitar, ya que hemos existido. Y el primer mandato del amor es
que vivemos; como encontramos tan bellamente expresado en el
relato bíblico de la creación, “Dios dijo…¡Que se haga!” Pablo
igualmente expresa con confianza que nuestra “esperanza no será
defraudada” porque “con Dios todo es posible.” La fiesta de hoy es
celebración de esperanza de que “Dios que comenzó una buena obra
en nosotros la llevara a su cumplimiento en el día de Cristo Jesús,”
que cada ser humano – sin excepción – es amado por Dios y llamado
a la santidad de vida, y que el Hijo de Dios ha venido a redimir a
todos con su vida, pasión, muerte, entierro, y gloriosa resurrección.
Y Cristo “rechaza a nadie que viene a el,” y sus en sus brazos están
seguros, “ninguno de los suyos se perderán.” El cristiano vive con la
certeza interior, a pesar de toda duda, preguntas y aflicciones, que “el
futuro es todo bueno, porque Dios es el futuro” (John O ‘Grady). El
día de los Fieles Difuntos (de todas las almas), es entonces una
invitación a recordar los fieles que nos han procedido, desde los
primeros seres humanos que respondieron a la gracia amorosa de
Dios hasta el ultimo que lo hará. Ellos forman una “nube de testigos”
que nos alientan, interceden por nosotros, así como también nosotros
los recordamos con nuestras oraciones y con nuestras lagrimas.
Oramos por ellos, confiados en la gran gracia y misericordia del
Padre amoroso. En Cristo todos estamos vivos como una familia, sea
aquí en la tierra, en el cielo, o en la santificación final que la Iglesia
tradicionalmente ha llamado como Purgatorio. Y aquí en la tierra,
“vivimos por la fe [y esperanza] y no por la vista,” o por mera
comprensión humana. Ya experimentamos aquí – a través de la fe,
esperanza, y el amor – la gloriosa e infinita ‘vida del mundo futuro’.
Encomendamos nuestros seres queridos y toda persona a la
misericordia de Dios quien es amor.
