La paciencia es difícil
Reflexión para la homelía
“El que espera desespera”, decía una Antigua canción
española. En la vida hay que esperar mucho y se desarrolla una
enorme paciencia. Dice un proverbio haitiano que la paciencia
es amarga, pero sus frutos son dulces. Sí que es cierto que la
paciencia es amarga. Es amargo esperar cuando hay una
separación familiar larga y dura. Es amargo esperar cuando no
llegan los papeles necesarios para legalizar una situación. Es
amargo esperar junto al lecho de un ser querido enfermo. Es
amargo esperar cuando no hay trabajo. Pero también es amargo
esperar cuando se espera algo bueno de alguien a quien le hemos
dado mucho, por quien nos hemos sacrificado, y nos responde
con indiferencia cuando menos, o con ataques en el peor de lo
casos. Es amargo esperar un cambio en una persona cercana
que no se está portando bien y a la que, de todas maneras,
queremos. A veces es difícil tener paciencia con nosotros
mismos, con los errores que cometemos y las acciones que
parece que no podemos sacudir y desterrar de nosotros mismos.
La paciencia puede ser bastante dura.
El dueño de la viña de la palabra de hoy, que refleja totalmente
la figura del “amigo” de la viña del Antiguo Testamento, parece
tener una paciencia inconmovible. Envía a unos y otros
mensajeros, y al fin envía incluso a su propio hijo, a quienes
matan los trabajadores. Así y todo, como nos dice el Papa un y
otra vez, nunca se cansa de perdonar, nunca. Imitar tal paciencia
no es fácil, pero es lo que se nos pide.
A veces se ve mejor todo lo malo, para todo lo que “hay que
tener paciencia, pero quizá a la paciencia se la pueda ayudar un
poco, según nos dice la carta a los Filipenses, ocupándonos de
lo que es verdadero, noble, justo y puro, amable y loable, de
toda virtud y de todo valor. Seguramente a nuestro alrededor
hay muchas razones para “desesperarse” y perder la paciencia,
pero es muy posible que también haya mucho de verdadero,
noble, justo y puro… Pensemos un poco en los detalles de
cariño de las personas de nuestro alrededor; en la nobleza de
nuestros padres o abuelos; en el sentido de la verdad que
inspiraron en nosotros; en la alegría de las fiestas familiares; en
el trabajo y sacrificio de nuestros mayores; en las acciones de
personas de iglesia o de organizaciones comunitarias por defender los derechos de los inmigrantes y trabajadores; en los
maestros que alentaron y motivaron a la superación; en la comida
que tenemos cada día, preparada con cariño; en la solidaridad
de nuestros vecinos ante una necesidad de la comunidad. La
carta a los filipenses nos anima a que, al considerar todas estas
cosas, presentamos también nuestras aflicciones, las cosas que
ponen nuestra paciencia a prueba, en oración y no nos aflijamos
por nada. Entonces la paz de Dios, que supera la compresión
humana, reinará.
Las palabras paciencia y paz comienzan de la misma manera.
Ambas son frutos de estar en Dios, de tener ojos limpios para
ver todo lo bueno y un corazón abierto y esperanzado. El Dios
de la viña, que espera a que nosotros demos frutos y a veces
parece esperar en vano (Él sabe que4 no), nos dará la paz y la
paciencia para esperar sin desesperar; para no perder la alegría;
para gustar, al fin, los frutos dulces de la paciencia.

¿Qué cosas ponen a prueba mi paciencia en este momento?
¿Qué cosas buenas veo a mí alrededor hoy? ¿Siento la paz de
Dios conmigo?

Patience can be difficult
Homily Reflection
Someone who waits can become desperate says an old Spanish song. In life you must wait a lot and enormous patience
is developed. A Haitian proverb says patience is bitter, but
its fruits are sweet. It is true that patience is bitter; it is bitter
to wait during a long and hard family separation; it is bitter
to wait for the necessary documents to legalize your status;
it is bitter to wait at the bedside of a sick loved one; it is
bitter to wait when there is no work. It is also bitter to wait
when something good is expected from someone we have
given plenty; for whom we sacrificed and responds with the
least indifference or with attacks in the worst case. It is
bitter to expect a change from a close person who is not
behaving well, and who in any case, we love. Sometimes it
is difficult to have patience with ourselves, with mistakes
we make, and the actions we can’t seem to shake or banish.
Patience can be extremely hard.
The vineyard’s owner in today’s parable, who fully reflects the figure of the “friend” of the vineyard of the Old
Testament, seems to have an unshakable patience. He sent
more and more emissaries and in the end, he even sent his
own son, whom the workers murdered. Even with all this,
as the Pope says again and again, he never gets tired of
forgiving, never. To imitate such patience is not easy, but it
is what we are asked to do.
Sometimes bad things can look good for everything that
requires patience, but perhaps patience can be helped a little,
according to the letter to the Philippians, by taking care of
what is true, noble, just and pure, kind and praiseworthy, of
all virtue and value. Surely there are many reasons in our
surroundings to despair and lose patience, but it is quite
possible that there is much that is true, noble, righteous, and
pure. Think a little about the loving details of the people
around us; in the graciousness of our parents or grandparents; in the sense of truth they inspired in us; in the joy of the
family celebrations; in the works and sacrifice of our elders; in the actions of people form church or community
organizations to defend the rights of immigrants and workers; in the teachers who encourage and motivate us to succeed; in the food we have each day prepared with love; in
the solidarity of our neighbors before the needs of the community. The letter to the Philippians encourages us that, in
considering all these things, we also present our afflictions,
things that try our patience, in prayer and not be afflicted
over anything. Then the peace of God, which surpasses all
human understanding, will reign.
The words patience and peace begin in the same way;
both are the fruits of beings in God, to have clear vision to
see all that is good, and an open heart. The God of the vineyard, who waits for us to give fruits and sometimes seems to
wait in vain (He knows better), will give the peace and
patience to stay without becoming desperate; to not lose our
joy; to enjoy, in the end, the sweet fruits of patience.
For reflection
What things are currently testing my patience? What good
things do I see around me? Do I feel God’s peace with me?

Today is National Life Chain Sunday.
The Life Chain is the largest peaceful,
prayerful, pro-life, public witness in the
world. Life Chain will be held throughout the United States and Canada. Local pro-life people will be lining up
