Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading: (Isaiah 62:1-5) All shall behold your vindication.
Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 96) “Proclaim His Marvelous Deeds To All The Nations.”
Second Reading: (1 Corinthians 12: 4-11) The Spirit distributes gifts to each person.
Gospel: (John 2: 1-11) Jesus transforms water into wine.
Even though the Christmas season is over, our psalm refrain urges us to continue to proclaim God’s marvelous
deeds. Indeed, Isaiah in the first reading is addressing Israel upon their return home from exile, and he cannot
keep silent about Israel’s vindication. Likewise, at his mother’s urging, Jesus cannot keep from performing the
first of his signs and so revealing his glory. Saint Paul tells us there are many gifts in the Spirit. With which one
shall you proclaim God’s marvelous deeds?

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands
Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Ciclo C
ENTRADA
Segunda lectura: I Corintios 12, 4-11

PROMOTING PURITY WITH
MARY AND ST. MARIA GORETTI
St . Maria Goretti is a Patroness of Purity. She
earned that title by defending her own purity from
Alessandro’s attack in 1903. She said to him, “No, it
is a sin.” He was so angry with her that he stabbed
her repeatedely, causing her death the following
day. She was only eleven years old, the youngest
of the canonized saints, and a perfect role model
for young people in our over-sexualized culture.
Our Lady of America, the Immaculate Virgin,
appeared to Precious Blood Sister Mary Mildred
Ephrem in the 20th Century. She asked Sister
Mildred to promote purity in America’s youth.
So, now we have a purity-promoting team in Saint
Maria and Our Lady of America. Please pray that
their common mission will bear abundant fruit.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
M
artin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was a Baptist
minister and social activist who played a key
role in the American civil rights movement from the
mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. Inspired
by advocates of nonviolence such as Mahatma Gandhi, King sought equality for African Americans, the
economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice
through peaceful protest. He was the driving force
behind watershed events such as the Montgomery
Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, which
helped bring about such landmark legislation as the
Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act
of 1965. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin
Luther King Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986.
CHRISTIAN UNITY PRAYER
Heavenly FatherThank You for the family You have
given me. Yet Lord! You know of my heartaches
caused by the disharmony in my family. I have
completely lost my peace and health because of
the chaotic situations that prevail at home.Master
I have no one, but You Lord, You alone can understand the hearts of men because it is You who
have created each one of us. Only You can make
two hearts understand each other and bring one
mindedness. Forgive me for any part I have played
in disrupting unity in my family. Help me forgive
other family members as well. Lord! You are the
Prince of peace and You have instituted families
to bring glory to Your name. Lord let my family
not defile Your name by this disunity. Help us to
forgive one another and unite all of us with Your
cord of love. Lord when You are in our midst
nothing can go wrong. So be present in our family Lord, fill each one of us with Your love and
understanding so that we can exalt Your name.I
know You will restore peace and unity at our home
because and only because I ask this in the precious
name of Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR JANUARY

That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may
produce the fruits of peace and justice.

PROMOTING PURITY WITH
MARY AND ST. MARIA GORETTI
St . Maria Goretti is a Patroness of Purity. She
earned that title by defending her own purity from
Alessandro’s attack in 1903. She said to him, “No, it
is a sin.” He was so angry with her that he stabbed
her repeatedely, causing her death the following
day. She was only eleven years old, the youngest
of the canonized saints, and a perfect role model
for young people in our over-sexualized culture.
Our Lady of America, the Immaculate Virgin,
appeared to Precious Blood Sister Mary Mildred
Ephrem in the 20th Century. She asked Sister
Mildred to promote purity in America’s youth.
So, now we have a purity-promoting team in Saint
Maria and Our Lady of America. Please pray that
their common mission will bear abundant fruit.
M
artin Luther King Jr.
Amen.

Ss. Peter & Paul Cathedral
St. Thomas, Virgin Islands
Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Ciclo C
ENTRADA
Segunda lectura: I Corintios 12, 4-11
