in the New Testament the good news of deliverance is announced to the poor, as Jesus himself
stresses, applying to himself the prophecy of the Book of Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon
me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are
oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" (Lk 4: 18; cf. Is 61: 1-2).
To possess the "kingdom of heaven", it is necessary to have the interior attitude of the poor
(cf. Mt 5: 3; Lk6: 20). In the parable of the great feast, the poor, the crippled, the blind and the
lame - in a word the most suffering and marginalized social categories - were invited to the
banquet ( cf. Lk 14: 21). St James would later say that God has "chosen those who are poor in
the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love
him" (Jas 2: 5).
4. "Evangelical" poverty always implies great love for the poorest of this world. In this third year
of preparation for the Great Jubilee, we must rediscover God as the provident Father who has
compassion on human suffering in order to relieve all who are afflicted. Our charity too must be
expressed in sharing and in human development understood as the integral growth of each
person.
Throughout history Gospel radicalism has spurred many of Jesus' disciples to seek poverty to the
point of selling their own goods and giving them as alms. Poverty here becomes a virtue which,
besides alleviating the lot of the poor, becomes a spiritual path to true wealth, that is, to an
unfailing treasure in heaven (cf.Lk 12: 32-34). Material poverty is never an end in itself, but a
means of following Christ, about whom Paul said to the Corinthians: "though he was rich, yet for
your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor 8: 9).
5. Here I can only stress again that the poor represent today's challenge especially for the wealthy
peoples of our world, where millions of people are living in inhuman conditions and many are
literally dying of hunger. We cannot proclaim God the Father to these brethren without the
commitment to work together in Christ's name to build a more just society.
The Church, especially in her social Magisterium from Rerum novarum to Centesimus annus, has
always strived to address the theme of the very poor. The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 must
be another opportunity for deep conversion of heart, so that the Spirit may raise up new witnesses
to this cause. Christians, together with all people of good will, must contribute, by appropriate
economic and political measures, to those structural changes which are so necessary for humanity
to be freed from the plague of poverty (cf. Centesimus annuns, n. 57).

En el Nuevo Testamento se anuncia a los pobres la buena nueva de la liberación, como Jesús
mismo subraya, aplicándose la profecía del libro de Isaías: «El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí,
porque me ha ungido para anunciar a los pobres la buena nueva, me ha enviado a proclamar la
liberación a los cautivos y la vista a los ciegos, para dar la libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar un
año de gracia del Señor» (Lc 4, 18-19, cf. Is 61, 1-2).
Es preciso asumir la actitud interior del pobre para poder participar del «reino de los cielos» (cf. Mt 5, 3; Lc6, 20). En la parábola de la gran cena los pobres y los lisiados, los ciegos y los
cojos, es decir, todas las clases sociales más afligidas y marginadas, son invitados al banquete
(cf. Lc 14, 21). Santiago dirá que Dios «escogió a los pobres según el mundo como ricos en la fe y
herederos del reino que prometió a los que le aman» (St 2, 5).
4. La pobreza «evangélica» implica siempre un gran amor a los más pobres de este mundo. En
este tercer año de preparación para el gran jubileo es necesario redescubrir a Dios como Padre
providente que se inclina sobre los sufrimientos humanos para elevar a los que se encuentran
inmersos en ellos. También nuestra caridad debe traducirse en participación y promoción humana,
entendida como crecimiento integral de toda persona.
La radicalidad evangélica ha impulsado a numerosos discípulos de Jesús, a lo largo de la historia, a
buscar la pobreza hasta el punto de vender sus bienes y darlos como limosna. La pobreza aquí
llega a ser una virtud que, además de aligerar la situación del pobre, se transforma en camino
espiritual gracias al cual puede alcanzar la verdadera riqueza, o sea, un tesoro inagotable en los
cielos (cf. Lc 12, 32-34). La pobreza material nunca es fin en sí misma, sino un medio para seguir
a Cristo, el cual, como recuerda san Pablo a los Corintios, «siendo rico, se hizo pobre por vosotros,
a fin de que os enriquecierais con su pobreza» (2 Co 8, 9).
5. Aquí no puedo por menos de destacar, una vez más, que los pobres constituyen el desafío
actual, sobre todo para los pueblos ricos de nuestro planeta, donde millones de personas viven en
condiciones inhumanas y muchos, literalmente, mueren de hambre. No se puede anunciar a Dios
Padre a estos hermanos sin el compromiso de colaborar en nombre de Cristo con vistas a la
construcción de una sociedad más justa.
La Iglesia se ha esforzado siempre, especialmente con su magisterio social, desde la Rerum
novarum hasta la Centesimus annus, por afrontar el tema de los más pobres. El gran jubileo del
año 2000 debe vivirse como una nueva ocasión de fuerte conversión de los corazones, para que el
Espíritu Santo suscite en esta dirección nuevos testigos. Los cristianos, juntamente con todos los
hombres de buena voluntad, deberán contribuir, mediante adecuados programas económicos y
políticos, a los cambios estructurales tan necesarios para que la humanidad se libre de la plaga de
la pobreza (cf. Centesimus annus, 57).

Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that
have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from
the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us,
I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to
write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have
received. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news
of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had
grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the
Sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was
written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to
captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he
handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the
synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

experience of hearing the Father’s voice after his baptism by John in
the Jordan, as the decisive turning point of his life; the inaugural sign at
the wedding at Cana of Galilee that led his disciples to begin to believe
in him as the Agent of God’s Kingdom; and today’s declaration of
Jesus at Nazareth announcing his agenda and the kind of messiah he
will be. Collectively, these highly charged and meaning-filled firsts
represent the radical novelty of who Jesus is and of what he will
achieve. Luke tells us that following the baptism Jesus returns to Galilean region “in the power of the Spirit.” He begins to galvanize crowds
as he brings his message to the gatherings of the many synagogues of
Galilee’s towns and villages. He returns to his hometown and, “as was
his custom” as a practicing Jew, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath. Jews had begun to gather as small congregations to read sacred
texts, pray and discuss matters of communal importance, since their
time of exile in Babylon in the sixth century B.C. Following the Exile
leaders like the priest-scribe Ezra formally and liturgically proclaimed
the Torah, and the tradition continues to this day. Moving and transformative, the Scriptures call for the response of faith and action: we
are to be “hearers and doers of the word.” Sometimes biblical texts
function to bring hope and strength to the people during times of persecution, oppression, and discouragement. Occupied as the Jewish nation
was by foreign Roman imperial dominance, the tense political climate
and context of Jesus’ life was one that raised Jewish expectations of a
messianic liberator, but also a climate that led some to violently rebel
against Roman conquest. Within this seedbed of social discontent and
political unrest, the text that Jesus was handed to read from Isaiah contained none other than Isaiah’s great vision of the God’s anointed who
would usher in an era of God’s transforming grace. The one anointed
by the Spirit of the Lord would: ‘bring good news to the poor, liberty to
the captives, sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed, and inaugurate an era of extraordinary divine grace’. The poor, the captives, the
blind, the oppressed: all of which were the very people living on the
margins of society and the victims of imperial rule. Of all the texts, it is
this one that Jesus employs to declare what he and his mission are
about. Although this text has often been understood metaphorically
(i.e., the captives of sin that destroys us and our world so much and in
so many ways), it nonetheless also implies great social and political
transformations. Today’s Catholic social justice ‘teaching and action’
gives contemporary expression to Jesus’ agenda. Jesus announces that
he will do those things that make a real difference in people’s lives. So
also his disciples, his Church, do likewise in the innumerable ways in
which daily and concretely the Church puts herself at the service of
people in need. Jesus agenda is the Church’s agenda, and that of each
of her members.
Muchos han emprendido la tarea de escribir la historia de los hechos que
Dios ha llevado a cabo entre nosotros, según nos los transmitieron
quienes desde el comienzo fueron testigos presenciales y después
recibieron el encargo de anunciar el mensaje. Yo también, excelentísimo
Teófilo, lo he investigado todo con cuidado desde el principio, y me ha
parecido conveniente escribirte estas cosas ordenadamente, para que
conozcas bien la verdad de lo que te han enseñado. En aquel tiempo,
Jesús volvió a Galilea con la fuerza del Espíritu; y su fama se extendió
por toda la comarca. Enseñaba en las sinagogas, y todos lo alababan. Fue
a Nazaret, donde se había criado, entró en la sinagoga, como era su
costumbre los sábados, y se puso en pie para hacer la lectura. Le
entregaron el libro del profeta Isaías y, desenrollándolo, encontró el
pasaje donde estaba escrito: “El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque
él me ha ungido. Me ha enviado para anunciar el Evangelio a los pobres,
para anunciar a los cautivos la libertad, y a los ciegos, la vista. Para dar
libertad a los oprimidos; para anunciar el año de gracia del Señor.” Y,
enrollando el libro, lo devolvió al que le ayudaba y se sentó. Toda la
sinagoga tenía los ojos fijos en él. Y él se puso a decirles: “Hoy se
cumple esta Escritura que acabáis de oír.”
Comentario breve: Por dos domingos las lectur as de los pr imer os
domingos de Tiempo Ordinario recuerdan varios ‘primeros’ en el
ministerio de Jesús: su escucha a la voz del Padre siguiendo su bautismo
por Juan en el Jordán, como el momento decisivo en su vida; la señal
inaugural en las bodas de Cana de Galilea que llevo a sus discípulos a
comenzar a creer en el como el Agente del reino de Dios; y la declaración
hoy de Jesús en Nazaret anunciando su agenda y que clase de mesías será.
Colectivamente, estos fuertes y significativos primeros representan la
novedad radical de Jesús y de lo que lograra. Lucas nos dice que
siguiendo el bautismo, Jesús regresa a la regio Galilea “en el poder del
Espíritu.” Comienza a atraer gran gentíos mientras trae su mensaje a las
congregaciones en las muchas sinagogas, pueblos y aldeas Galileas.
Retorna a su pueblo y, “como con era su costumbre” como Judío
practicante, entro a la sinagoga en el Sábado. Los judíos habían
comenzado a reunirse en pequeñas congregaciones para leer textos
sagrados, orar y discutir temas de importancia comunitaria, desde el
tiempo de exilio en Babilonia en el sexto siglo A.C. Siguiendo el Exilio,
lideres como el sacerdote-escriba Era formalmente y litúrgicamente
proclamaban la Tora, y esa tradición continua hasta nuestro día.
Inspiradoras y transformantes, la escrituras claman por una respuesta de
fe y acción: hemos de ser “oyentes y practicantes de la palabra.” Algunos
textos bíblicos funcionan para traer esperanza y fortaleza a su pueblo
durante tiempos de persecución, opresión, y desamino. Ocupados, como
estaba la tierra judía, por la dominancia imperial y extranjera romana, el
clima y contexto político tenso de la vida de Jesús era una que suscito
expectativas judías sobre un liberador mesiánico, pero también un clima
de llevo algunos a rebelarse violentamente contra la conquista romana.
Dentro este semillero de descontento social y perturbación política, el
texto de Isaías cual le entregaron a Jesús contenía nada mas que la gran
visión de Isaías de un ungido de Dios quien traería una era de gracia
transformadora de Dios. El ungido por el Espíritu del Señor había de:
‘anunciar buenas nuevas a los pobres, libertad a los cautivos, luz al ciego,
emancipación al oprimido, e inaugurara una era extraordinaria de gracia
divina’. Los pobres, los cautivos, los ciegos, los oprimidos: todos los
quienes vivan al margen de la sociedad y victimas de dominación
imperial. De todos los textos, es este el cual Jesús emplea para declarar su
carácter y la de su misión. Y aunque este texto mayormente ha sido
interpretado metafóricamente (los cautivos del pecado que nos destruye a
y nuestro mundo de tantas maneras), aun también implica grandes
transformaciones sociales y políticas. La ‘doctrina y acción’ social
Católica de hoy da expresión contemporánea a la agenda de Jesús. Jesús
anuncia de que el hará esas cosas que hacen una verdadera diferencia en
las vidas de las personas. También sus discípulos, su Iglesia, hacen
igualmente en las innumerables maneras en que diariamente y
concretamente la Iglesia se pone al servicio de los necesitados. La agenda
de Jesús es la agenda de la Iglesia, y la de cada uno de sus miembros.
