THE SPIRIT
The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the
Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week's
feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an
"epiphany," or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in
Jesus-first in his birth, and now at his baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures
for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from
Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke's account
of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon
Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy
Spirit was "richly poured out" on us also, through the

AL ESpiRITU
El tiempo de Navidad finaliza este domingo con el
Bautismo del Senor. Esta fiesta es hermana de la fiesta de
la semana pasada, la Epifania. Cada una ellas celebra una
"epifania", 0 manifestacion del Espiritu de Dios en Jesus
-primero en su nacimiento y ahora en su bautismo.
El Espiritu Divino se manifiesta en todas las lecturas
biblicas de la fiesta. El Salmo 104 destaca al Espiritu de
Dios que crea y renueva la tierra, mientras que la lectura
de Isaias describe aDios restaurando a Israel. En el relato
de Lucas del bautismo del Senor el Espiritu Santo desciende sobre Jesus. Y la carta a Tito nos recuerda que el
Espiritu Santo tambien "derramo con abundancia" sobre
nosotros, el "bafio de regeneracion" (Tito 3:5, 6).

La otra noche miraba la puesta del sol desde mi
ventana y contemplaba como las diferentes capas de nubes
creaban un panorama extraordinario con sus diferentes matices, desde dorados.: anaranjados y rojos hasta morados y
grises. Fue un momento deslumbrante. El bautismo de Jesus
es uno de esos momentos breves y hermosos, que se nos
relata en los primeros tres evangelios (y al cual alude el
cuarto Evangelio).
El relato de Lucas se diferencia de los otros en que
el momento dramatico no ocurre cuando Jesus emerge de
las aguas sino despues de su bautismo, mientras ora. Al
Evangelio de Lucas se le ha llamado el Evangelio de la oracion, ya que desde el principio presenta a Jesus adulto como
alguien que ora. En este momento de intimidad "se abrio el
cielo, y el Espiritu Santo bajo sobre el en forma visible, como una paloma" (Lucas 3:21-22). Mientras el oraba llego
una voz que Ie dijo: "Tu eres mi Hijo amado, en ti me complazco" (3:22). De aqui en adelante vemos que Jesus esta
bajo la influencia del Espiritu Santo y este Espiritu 10 dirige
primero al desierto donde es tentado, y despues a su vida
publica de servicio.
Con esta solemne celebracion del bautismo nosotros tambien somos enviados hacia el tiempo liturgico que
llamamos "ordinario" y se nos recuerda que Dios nos dirigio
esas mismas palabras en nuestro bautismo: "Tu eres mi hijo
(mi hija). En ti me complazco. Te envi6 a servir de la misma
manera que mi Hijo Jesus fue a servir, en compafiia del
Espiritu Santo. .

The other night I was looking out the window as
the sun was setting and the layers of clouds allowed the sun
to create an extraordinary sunset, painting some clouds with
a golden hue, while others were orange and red, moving to
purple and gray. It was a stunning moment. The baptism of
Jesus is one of those brief moments of beauty, occurring in
the first three Gospels (and alluded to in the fourth).
Luke's account differs from the others in that the
dramatic moment does not occur as Jesus is coming up out
of the water but only after his baptism, while he is praying.
Luke's Gospel has been called the Gospel of prayer, and
from its beginning the adult Jesus is presented as one who
prays. At this moment of intimacy, "heaven was opened and
the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a
dove" (Luke 3:21-22). While he was at prayer, the voice
spoke to him: "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well
pleased" (3:22). From here on we find that Jesus is under
the influence of the Holy Spirit, and this Spirit directs him
first into the desert to be tested, then into his years of service.
With this solemn celebration of the baptism, we too
are sent back into the days called "Ordinary Time," reminded that God has spoken these same words to us at our
baptism: You are my son, my daughter. I delight in you. I
send you forth to serve as my Son, Jesus, went forth to

We pray as Jesus prayed that we might hear the voice of
the Father, a voice that speaks of God's love for us. We
ask that we might allow that Spirit, God's holy breath
that came upon us at our own baptism, to move us out
into the world in service to those most in need whom
God has set before us.

Oracion Colecta XXVI Domingo Ordinario
EI concepto «misericordia» tiene en el Antiguo Testamento una larga y
rica historia. Debemos remontarnos hasta ella para que resplandezca
mas plenamente la misericordia revelada por Cristo. AI revelarla con
sus obras y ensefianzas, EI se estaba dirigiendo a hombres, que no
solo conodan el concepto de misericordia, sino que edemas, en
cuanto pueblo de Dios de la antigua alianza, habfan sacado de su
historia plurisecular una experiencia peculiar de la misericordia de
Dios. Esta experiencia era social y comunitaria, como tamblen
individual e interior.
AI definir la misericordia los Libros del Antiguo Testamento usan sobre
todo dos expresiones: Hesed y Rahamim.
EI termino Hesed indica una actitud profunda de «bondad», «gracia»
o «amor». Es decir se manifiesta como amor que da, amor mas fuerte
que la tralclon, gracia mas fuerte que el pecado.
Fruto de ese amor son el pardon, la restauracion de la gracia y el
restablecimiento de la alianza interior.
EI segundo vocablo, que en la terminologfa del AT sirve para definir la
misericordia es Rah mim «amor de madre», rah mim engendra una
escala de sentimientos, entre los que estan la bondad y la ternura, la
paciencia y la cornprension, es decir, la dlsposlclon a perdonar.
Y cuando por desobedienciaperdio tu amistad, no 10abandonasteal poder de
la muerte, sino que compadecido, tendiste la mane a todos, para que te
encuentre el que te buses. Reiterasteademas, tu alianza a 105 hombres; por
los profetas los fuiste lIevando con la esperanza de la. salvacion. Y tanto
amaste al mundo, Padresanto, que, al curnplirse la plenitud de los tiempos,
nos enviastecomo salvadora tu unico Hijo.
