January 3, 2016 / 3 d e Enero d e 2016 SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo Solemnidad de la Epifanía del Señor ANNULMENTS Pope Francis, in his desire to celebrate the year of mercy, has decided to streamline the process for annulments as much as possible. The concept of annulment is itself a form of mercy. Jesus Christ said that marriage between a man and woman is sacred and for all of life. Christ made marriage a sacrament. And yet throughout history marriages have failed and ended before one of the spouses died. In light of this reality and with the responsibility to be faithful to the teaching of Jesus, the Church established a system of tribunals to help people find out if there was an impediment to the marriage from the beginning. When something is discovered that shows that the couple was blocked in living out the marriage, even when they desired to do so on their wedding day, the Church is able to nullify the union. The Pope has called for the tribunals throughout the world to perform the annulments free of charge. In Boston, this means the Catholic Appeal will have to foot the bill for this office. (The Church was already doing this without cost for people with financial need.) There is also a new process for couples in certain circumstances that will require less work and time. This process depends on whether both spouses agree that an annulment should be granted. (Often times only one spouse agrees or decides to take part in the process.) There are some other changes that may help people who are in need of an annulment, especially if they want to marry someone else with the blessing of God. It may be a good time to pursue this. Please also spread the word to your children, siblings, grandchildren co-workers and friends who may wish take part in this process which often brings healing to people. UPDATE ON WEDDING AT CANA II We are postponing the wedding of Cana until the Fall. If there are any couples who would like to get married in the church next Fall but do not want to spend thousands of dollars and hours and hours of planning and worrying, please contact one of the priests. This past year, seven couples were married on this night. We want to help you and others celebrate your wedding with simplicity and grace without stressing you out both before the big day and after the credit cards bills arrive. STRUGGLING IN YOUR MARRIAGE? You are not alone! If your marriage is tearing the two of you apart, if there is little or no meaningful communication, if you are considering separation or divorce, we believe Retrouvaille can help. ATTACKS ON GOD Brunei, Somalia ban Christmas celebrations In recent days, the governments of two predominantly Muslim nations warned their citizens not to celebrate Christmas, declaring that all events related to Christmas and New Year celebrations are contrary to Islamic culture and could damage the faith of the Muslim community. Muslims who send Christmas greetings, use Christmas trees or lights, or otherwise take part in Christmas celebrations face up to five years in prison. ON THE BULLETIN COVER Adoration of the Magi The cover depicts a panel from a Roman sarcophagus, 4th century from the cemetery of St. Agnes in Rome. The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2016 SAINT MARY PARISH My brothers and sisters in Christ, I pray that you are enjoying the Christmas Season. May you be richer because of these days rather than poorer. I pray that this Jubilee Year of Mercy truly be a time of Spiritual renewal and unity for us… so that all may live in peace. We are looking forward to this new year in the parish. The After School Program and catechetical sessions are starting up again. If you would like to enroll your children in the After School Program please contact their office at 781-577-2262. We are beginning classes at the end of this month for adults who wish to receive the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. If you, or anyone you know, would like to take these classes and be prepared to receive these sacraments in the Spring please speak to one of the priests or the Deacon. We still plan on hosting the Wedding at Cana in the Fall. If this is the year for you to have your marriage blessed in the Church, we would be happy to help you in a way that minimizes all the costs and preparations. We have also started a monthly couples meeting that brings married couples together to study the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Please let me know if you would like to join us. This year we want to build up and strengthen the Knights of Columbus Council that was just restarted last year. Last year, we worked on getting members to join. This year we want to build on that good work while providing opportunities to help the men grow in spirit and fraternity. To do all this, we will continue to look to the saint recommended to us by Pope Francis in his recent encyclical – Saint Francis of Assisi. May this new year be a year of grace and mercy for you, our Church and the world. – Father Michael ANOINTING OF THE SICK This week we offer Masses at St. Mary’s with the anointing of the sick. READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND The Epiphany of the Lord / C 497 Excerpts from the HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS Vatican Basilica, 6 January 2015 Epiphany of the Lord . . . The star which led them on the journey allows them to enter into the mystery. Led by the Spirit, they come to realize that God’s criteria are quite different from those of men, that God does not manifest himself in the power of this world, but speaks to us in the humbleness of his love. God’s love is great. God’s love is powerful. But the love of God is humble, yes, very humble. The wise men are thus models of conversion to the true faith, since they believed more in the goodness of God than in the apparent splendour of power. . . . The wise men entered into the mystery. They passed from human calculations to the mystery: this was their conversion. And our own? Let us ask the Lord to let us undergo that same journey of conversion experienced by the wise men. Let us ask him to protect us and to set us free from the temptations which hide the star. To let us always feel the troubling question: “Where is the star?”, whenever – amid the deceptions of this world – we lose sight of it. To let us know ever anew God’s mystery, and not to be scandalized by the “sign”, that sign spoken of by the angels, which points to “a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger” (Lk 2:12), and to have the humility to ask the Mother, our Mother, to show him to us. To find the courage to be liberated from our illusions, our presumptions, our “lights”, and to seek this courage in the humility of faith and in this way to encounter the Light, Lumen, like the holy wise men. May we enter into the mystery. So may it be. Amen. 4 The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2016 Queridos hermanos en Cristo: ¡Feliz Año Nuevo 2016! Luganda p.m. Monday, Wednesday & Friday/Lunes, Miércoles y Viernes 7:00 p.m. Español * Friday/V iernes 8:00 p.m. Luganda * Holy Days/Dias de Precepto 7:00 a.m., 12:10 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Español CONFESSIONS/Confesiones Mon.-Thurs./Lunes-Jueves Friday/V iernes Saturday/Sábado Sunday/Domingo 11:30 11:00 3:00 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - 3:45 a.m. - 11:20 p.m. p.m. p.m. a.m. MORNING PRAYER/ Oración M atutina Sunday/Domingo 7:30 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. PRAY THE ROSARY/El Santo Rosario Monday-Friday/Lunes-Viernes 11:30 a.m. Sunday/Domingo 11:00 a.m. Español ADORATION/Adoración Wednesday/Miércoles Friday/V iernes 12:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.* 12:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. ANOINTING OF THE SICK/Unción de los enferm os First Monday of the month - 12:10 p.m. First Wednesday of the month - 7:00 p.m. Mass* El primer Miércoles del mes durante la misa de las 7:00 p.m.* COMMUNION TO SICK & HOMEBOUND/Comunión a los hogares y enfermos Call Ann Faulstich at 781-893-8953 Llamar a el Diácono 617-817-7544 STAFF Pastor/Párroco Parochial Vicar/V icario Par.
