Collection for the Church in Latin America
Inspires All to "Share Your Faith"
The annual national Collection for the Church in Latin
America (CLA) will be the weekend of January 2-3. The
2016 campaign highlights the faith of Latin America and the
many opportunities we have to share faith with them. We also
recognize the tremendous benefit of having our Latin American brothers and sisters in the Church and the revitalization
their fervor brings to the faith. In addition to offering our help
and support to the Catholics of Latin America, we have much
to learn from them.
D ear friends in Sacred Heart:
Almost at the end of this 2015, the Sacred Liturgy invites us to celebrate the Solemnity of
the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. This celebration is a great opportuity to reflect
about what is the model for the cells in our society. Even when nowadays we can find different opinions of what some groups want to call “family”, I firmly believe that as Christians
we need to pay attention how Jesus was living among us and what the Sacred Scripture is
teaching us about His first years with his people in Nazareth.
The first reflexion we can get from this Solemnity is to conceive marriage as the sacrament which unites a man
and a woman to form a couple; and every marriage intends children. Mary and Joseph were married in order to
bring Jesus into the world, to protect and raise him. Although Mary and Joseph were not united in a carnal way,
their marrage was a true marriage: an indissoluble and exclusive union.
The Holy Family observed the religious laws of Israel; they went in pilgrimage to Jerusalem every year with
other Jewish families. Sometimes God's will obliges the family to make disconcerting sacrifices. As every Christian family must live in harmony and in prayer, which are the pledges of joy and union before God.
Every child in a family must remain obedient to their parents, as Jesus did with his Father and Mother. Joseph
as well remained the head of the family, when he took the initiative when they went to Egypt.
How deteriorated our families are today, when the children do not listen or show respect of their parents when
the father is absent and the mother needs to play both roles in the home. How can we enjoy a community united
when we have no unity in our families?
These are just a few points we can discover in the Holy Family reflexion; but they are the first example God
gave us to keep our communities unified and with respect for each other in order to protect what is vital. Let us
pray to our Lord, that we can protect and work for the unity in our own families, to find and get the peace and unity we need in our society.
Peace to all,
Fr. Francisco Ortega

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
A Blessed Christmas to you all.
My greeting comes at a time marked by sad and troubling news for our city, our nation and our
world. The joyful news of Christmas competes in these days with stories of street violence in our
city, of wars, conflicts and acts of terrorism throughout the world including in our own nation.
Office of the Archbishop
As people of faith, we must read these “signs of the times.” As we do, so Christmas gives us a
proper perspective: the sadness of violence and war does not have the last word. God has come to save us, for we
cannot save ourselves. The savior born to us raises us up from darkness and brings us into his own wonderful light.
One of the Christmas readings taken from Paul’s letter to Titus says this:
When the kindness and generous love
of God our savior appeared,
not because of any righteous deeds we had done
but because of his mercy,
he saved us… Titus 3:4-5
We hear those words “because of his mercy,” especially as we celebrate the Jubilee of Mercy this year. The challenge for us is not just to believe that God is merciful, but also to believe that God is merciful to us and that God is
blessing us with his mercy precisely at this very moment, and in the limited circumstances of our lives and relationships. When we accept that mercy, we will be transformed and become the merciful light of God in a dark and cold
world. Then, our own works of mercy will, in turn, bring hope, healing, and renewal, just as God’s mercy has done
for us.
May God bless you and your families with his mercy and enable you to be the hands of his mercy in our world.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich
Archbishop of Chicago
Thank YOU to all the vendors/crafters,

Exploring the Diaconate
The call of the Holy Spirit to consider a vocation may
sometimes be a gentle voice stirring the soul or a personal
longing in our hearts. It may be urging of friends or
spouses. It can also find birth in the invitation of pastors,
deacons & parish leaders to pursue such an inquiry. No
matter the source of our questions, each of us needs to be
affirmed & encourages to bring a call to a vocation to
prayerful discernment.
The Institute of Diaconal Studies (IDS) invites all men
who feel the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to attend an
Exploring the Diaconate session. It is a time to pray, discuss, & learn more about the discernment process & the
formation program that aspirants & candidates pursue.
Please join us, with your wives, if married, as we explore the potential of a vocation, engage in dialogue &
pray in search of the next step. All are welcome to attend
any of the sessions. No registration required.
For more info, contact Deacon Bob Puhala, [email protected] or 847.837.4564 or visit us at USML.edu
“When we speak of the ‘environment.’ what we really
mean is a relationship existing between nature and the
society which lives in it. Nature cannot be regarded as
something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting
in which we live...We are faced not with two separate
crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and
environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity
to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.”

Como estan deterioradas nuestras familias hoy en día, cuando los niños no escuchan o muestran respeto a sus padres;

Se manifestó la bondad de Dios, nuestro salvador, y su amor a los hombres;
nuestro mundo.
Sinceramente suyo en Cristo:
