Our prayers help them during their time in Purgatory, so that they can enter more quickly into the fullness of heaven. These prayers are especially suited for offering a novena on behalf of the dead, or for praying during those seasons of the year (November, in the Western Church; Lent, in the Eastern Church) designated by the Church as times of fervent prayer for the faithful departed. St. Pius X Catholic Community welcomes our newest members into the Catholic Church Karina Alyne Lagunas, daughter of Miguel & Diana Ellie Victoria Souchet, daughter of Angel & Estella Walter Lawrence McCahill, son of Kevin & Jean Jack Richard Hudecek, son of Michael & Sandi Abigail Elise Niglaccio, daughter of Leo & Jennifer Alberto Medina Llamas, son of Alberto and Yadira Isaac Abraham Barriga, son of Jose and Marilo The most famous scriptural reference, among others, concerning these prayers comes from the Old Testament where it is called “a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Macabees 12:46). Eternal Rest “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” OR The Prayer of St. Gertrude, below, is one of the most famous of the prayers for souls in purgatory. St. Gertrude the Great (pictured at left) was a Benedictine nun and mystic who lived in the 13th century. According to tradition, our Lord promised her that 1000 souls would be released from purgatory each time it is said devoutly. Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. Purgatory is not punishment but God’s mercy: “Few people can say they are prepared to stand before God,” says Susan Tassone, (Our Sunday Visitor, 2012). “If we didn’t have purgatory there would be very few people in heaven, because it would be heaven or hell. It is His mercy that allows us to prepare to be with him in heaven.” For further reading - www.ourcatholicprayers.com/prayers-for-soulsin-purgatory.html Light Our Way “Being a Catholic is about seeing the chosen part of things. An infant whose Father’s house has many mansions but who chooses to be born in a manger. A man nailed to a cross who is not a victim but unbounded love. A virgin womb. A faithful groom. An empty tomb. A treasure hidden in a field. A coin found. A mustard seed Eternity in a grain of sand. Catholicism is about seeing what the eyes cannot see and understanding what is at the heart of things: truth, love, mercy, goodness, beauty, harmony, humility, compassion, gratitude, joy, peace, salvation. It’s about seeing the ordinary and perceiving the extraordinary at the same time” -Michael Leach Author of “Why Stay Catholic” Lighthouse CD Spotlight Abba or Allah In this informative talk, Dr. Scott Hahn explores some of the most important beliefs that distinguish Christianity from Islam. He explains that while both religions trace themselves back to Abraham, the differences, including our understanding of God as Father, are not insignificant. With charity, balance, and candor, Dr. Hahn shows us how Islam presents the most formidable challenge to Christianity in the Third millennium. Mr. Wagner has been involved in the troop for a number of years and has a Scout actively participating in the program. He also brings a unique quality to the Scoutmaster position as the result of him being deaf. His scoutmaster minute, that closed the ceremony, included a troop wide commitment to “Do their Best” in sign language. Congratulations to Tom and Brian! Submitted by Jeff Werner On Tuesday, September 30, at the fall Court of Honor for Troop 140, Scoutmaster Tom D’Alessandro was presented the “Unit Leader Award of Merit.” This national level award was approved by Three Fires Council and presented to Scoutmaster D’Alessandro by four former Troop 140 Scoutmasters, including an emotional Scoutmaster Emeritus Rick Hintz and Scoutmaster Emeriti: Matt Williamson, Joe Martinet, and Deacon Larry Lissak. During Mr. D’Alessandro’s two year tenure as Scoutmaster, 14 Scouts earned the highest rank in Boy Scouting, the Eagle Scout rank. The Troop has significantly added to the Scout and leader roster and the troop runs two summer camps with participation rate near 80% of registered Scouts. High Adventure trips in the last two years included Kayaking in the boundary waters and participation in the United States Military Academy at West Point's Camporall. The award also considers training, advancements, a positive relationship with the Charter Organization (St. Pius X Catholic Church) and the Scouting Community. Deacon Larry Lissak also presented Tom with a "Certificate of Appreciation" on behalf of Charter Head, Fr. George Zieba. The Certificate commends Tom for his "Dedicated and selfless support of the Charter Organization." Committee Chairman Dan Matasek concluded the award portion of the ceremony by presenting Mrs. Sue D'Alessandro a gift certificate to Pheasant Run Resort and Theater. “ManyHandsMakeLightWork”–JohnHeywood In this year of St. Pius X Parish celebration, what better way to celebrate as a community than to come together at the annual Black and Gold Gala, Saturday, February 7, 2015 @ The Carlisle, in Lombard, Illinois. AND DIOCESAN NEWS Job Opportunities PART TIME HELP WANTED Saint Anne Parish in Oswego, IL seeks secretary and clerical position. Eastern DuPage Deanery News Greeting Fellow Disciples of Christ, “The Catholic faith never changes, but the language and mode of manifesting this one faith can change according to peoples, times, and places.” Cardinal Francis Arinze, CardinalBishop of Velletri-Segni has preached this message for decades. Today we find ourselves in the midst of change and are working to embrace this change in order to help us grow closer to God, to our Church and to our parishes. Bishop Conlon has asked that the deaneries throughout the Diocese create a steering committee to work together to strengthen our Catholic communities through collaboration. So, our steering committee was created. We are the Eastern DuPage Deanery of the Joliet Diocese, and we consist of 16 parishes in our ever growing family of God. Our steering committee includes Priests, Deacons, and parishioners and has come together with a mission to create a spirit of collaboration among our parishes to foster the building of the Kingdom of God. The committee is working to find creative ways to grow our ministries and to generate excitement within them. By sharing our resources, we can relieve some of the stress on the people who serve in these ministries and reduce the risk that they become overextended. We begin to move forward by creating ties between the 16 parishes within our deanery. A Deanery Directory is the first tool being created for this purpose. This directory will be made available to all of us as deanery members. Additional tools are being developed that will facilitate the flow of this information. Our plan includes utilizing both old and new technologies so that everyone can access the information that they need. Our steering committee is broken down into six subcommittees including communications, health care outreach, adult formation, sacramental preparation, social outreach, and liturgical events. We recently began holding monthly meetings that will continue through the next year. All are welcome to join us at these open meetings. Please feel free to come and share your ideas. This process of greater collaboration is God’s project. As Bishop Conlon stated in his article, Working Together, in the January 2014 issue of Christ is Our Hope magazine, “The Church is an instrument in God’s hands, designed by Him to do His work. Thus, we must pray constantly about this effort and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.” Let us know what you would like to see happen within our deanery as well as what you can do to help us. We are all called as Catholics to be Priest, Prophet, and King to our brothers and sisters by our baptism. Please help the Eastern DuPage Deanery to live this promise by working on this effort together. May Our Father’s peace be with you always, Very Reverend Thomas Paul, V.F.
