It is the week we commemorate and enact the suffering (Passion) and death of Jesus through various observances and services of worship. While some church traditions focus specifically on the events of the last week of Jesus’ life, many of the liturgies symbolize larger themes that marked Jesus’ entire ministry. In Catholic tradition, the conclusion to the week is called the Easter Triduum (a triduum is a space of three days usually accompanying a church festival or holy days that are devoted to special prayer and observance). Palm Sunday This Sunday observes the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that was marked by the crowds who were in Jerusalem for Passover waving palm branches and proclaiming Him as the messianic king. The Gospels tell us that Jesus rode into the city on a donkey, enacting the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, and in so doing emphasized the humility that was to characterize the Kingdom He proclaimed. The irony of His acceptance as the new Davidic King (Mark 11:10) by the crowds who would only five days later cry for His execution should be a sobering reminder of the human tendency to want God on our own terms. This Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday to commemorate the beginning of Holy Week and Jesus’ final agonizing journey to the cross. The English word passion comes from a Latin word that means "to suffer," the same word from which we derive the English word patient. Maundy Thursday/Holy Thursday Maundy Thursday, also known as “Holy Thursday” is the Thursday of Passion Week, one day before Good Friday. Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper. Two important events are the focus of Maundy Thursday. First, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples and thereby instituted the Eucharist (Luke 22:19-20). Second, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service, thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one another in humility (John 13:3-17). The word “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word for “command.” The “Maundy” in Maundy Thursday refers to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another. Good Friday Good Friday is the Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. It is celebrated traditionally as the day on which Jesus was crucified and had died. Why is Good Friday referred to as “good”? What the Jewish authorities and Romans did to Jesus was definitely not good (see Matthew chapters 26-27). However, the results of Christ’s death are very good! Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Monetary offerings collected today will be sent to the Holy Land to support the needs of Christians who struggle daily to survive in conditions marred by violence and strife and also to maintain shrines in our Lord’s place of birth, agony, death and resurrection. Holy Saturday Holy Saturday is the name given to the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Some Christians recognize this day as the seventh day of Holy Week, the day on which Jesus “rested” from His work of providing salvation for the world. Holy Saturday is the day Jesus remained in the tomb where He had been buried following His crucifixion. Easter Vigil The Easter Vigil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in the Roman Catholic Church. Although celebrated Holy Saturday evening, it is the dramatic Easter vigil liturgy that marks the beginning of Easter. We are awaiting our master's return with our lamps full and burning, so that He will find us awake and seat us at His table (cf. Luke 12:35ff). All Catholics should try to attend this beautiful service. It is in the Easter Vigil that we welcome adult new members to the faith in the Sacrament of Baptism and also administer the Sacraments Confirmation and Eucharist to them. The vigil is divided into four parts: (1)Service of Light; (2)Liturgy of the Word; (3)Liturgy of Baptism; and (4) Liturgy of the Eucharist. God Bless You! Fr. Elmer Pray for our Priests Sun. 29 Rev. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. The Great Western Schism (1378-1417) was settled at the Council of Constance (1414-1418). France and England were fighting the Hundred Years’ War, and in 1453 the Byzantine Empire was completely wiped out by the loss of Constantinople to the Turks. At Peter’s death, the age of printing had just begun in Germany, and Columbus's arrival in the New World was less than 40 years away. Peter came from a wealthy and pious family in Valladolid, Spain. At the age of 13, he was allowed to enter the Conventual Franciscans. Shortly after his ordination, he was made superior of the friary in Aguilar. He became part of a group of friars who wanted to lead a life of greater poverty and penance. In 1442 he was appointed head of all the Spanish Franciscans in his reform group. Peter led the friars by his example. A special love of the poor and the sick characterized Peter. Miraculous stories are told about his charity to the poor. For example, the bread never seemed to run out as long as Peter had hungry people to feed. Throughout most of his life, Peter went hungry; he lived only on bread and water.. Immediately after his death on March 31, 1456, his grave became a place of pilgrimage. Peter was canonized in 1746. Pedro fue canonizado En 1746 Lecturas para la semana de Marzo 29, 2015 Lunes: Is 42:1-7/Sal 27:1-3,13-14/Jn 12:1-11 Martes: Is 49:1-6/Sal 71:1-6,15,17/Jn 13:21-33,36-38 Miércoles: Is 50:4-9/Sal 69:8-10,21-22,31,33-34/Mt 26:14-25 Jueves: Is 61:1-3,6,8-9/Sal 89:21-22,25,27/Ap 1:5-8/Lc 4:16-21 Viernes: Is 52:13-53:12/Sal 31:2,6,12-13,15-17,25/ Heb 4:14-16;5:7-9/Jn 18:1-19:42 Sábado: Gen 1:1-2:2/Sal 104: 1-2, 5-6, 10, 12-14, 24, 35 Próximo Domingo: He 10:34,37-43/Sal 118:1-2,16-17,22-23/ A Cat’s View Veterinary Hospital MON - FRI 8-6 SAT 9-12 Church of the Resurrection Rock, Sand, Gravel, Top Soil VALLEY CENTER MATERIALS Religious Gifts - Bibles - Rosaries Landscape Supplies Weekdays.: 9 am - 5 pm Sat.: 9 am - 7 pm Sun.: Open before & after all Masses 31034 Valley Center Rd.
