In the Dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and
images may be observed this weekend. Crosses, with the exception of
processional crosses, remain covered until the end of the Liturgy of the
Lord’s Passion on Good Friday. Why? What does this ancient practice
mean?
In a world that is losing its sense of meaning and purpose, these liturgical actions do
have a rich mystical and spiritual meaning and purpose pointing to a Mystery / reality
in Jesus Christ - His hiddenness. This practice goes back to the 17th century. In the old
liturgical calendar beginning with the 5th Sunday of Lent was called the Passiontide
due to the fact that the Passion account of our Lord was read on Palm Sunday. Also, it
probably derives from a custom, noted in Germany from the 9th century, of extending a
large cloth before the altar from the beginning of Lent. The cloth is called the
‘Hungertuch’ (hunger cloth), hid the altar entirely from the faithful during Lent and was
not removed until the reading of the Passion on Holy Wednesday at the words ‘the veil
of the temple was rent in two.’
I find the mystical reason is more important and profound. By His becoming incarnate
from us, Jesus’ Divinity was constantly veiled by His humanity. Covering of the Crosses
and saints is also for many, a sign of the humiliation to which Jesus subjected Himself
for us. St. Paul has many references to this.
In a time when superficiality, fashion and materialism are the proof of who we are, Jesus
is inviting us to go deep within us and reveal the sense and meaning of our self being.
Covering ourselves offers us private time, an occasion to think, to slow down, to be in
darkness, to experience the desert of our life…to go into the tomb. If we always want to
be in the light, how can we know its inner beauty but by comparing it to the darkness?
This weekend more than 100 of our children/students have taken a step out of their own
world, families, technology and friends to live their encounter with Jesus through their
“Confirmation retreat”. They want to find some answers to the quest of faith. We really
hope that this time will be a touching moment with the Holy Spirit.
To see clearly, and be transparent we need to cry out as David taught us on Psalm 50
“Create a clean heart in me, O God. Give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing
spirit sustain in me. I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners shall return to
you.” So let me be with you Jesus, I want you to be part of my life!

IL SIGNIFICATO DEL NOSTRO
LA NUOVA ALLEANZA
Quando il profeta Geremia conio’ il
termine “nuova alleanza”, egli stava
facendo qualcosa di molto radicale. Per
il popolo giudeo, c’era un sola alleanza, quella fatta
tra il Signore Dio e Israele per mezzo di Mose’ sul
monte Sinai. Suggerire da parte di Geremia che Dio
avrebbe in qualche modo soppiantato l’alleanza con
una nuova, sarebbe stato considerato sfrontato alle
orecchie dei Giudei. Ma in questo modo egli fu un
precedessore di Gesu’ che, nel Vangelo di Giovanni,
e’ continuamente mostrato soppiantando il passato,
stabilendo il regno di Dio in un nuovo modo. E nel
brano del Vangelo di oggi, Gesu’ la ‘nuova alleanza”
parla del “nuovo comandamento” di amore quando
parla del chicco di grano che muore, e del nostro
bisogno di morire a noi stessi per poter essere
sollevati con Cristo. Ora che la Quaresima finisce e
ci prepariamo ad entrare nella Settimana Santa, il
morente chicco di grano serve come un eccellente
simbolo del tipo di morire e di sacrificarsi ai quali i
discepoli sono chiamati, un simbolo di quella nuova
alleanza scritta nel profondo del nostro cuore.

Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection
for their lives. As a pontifical collection requested by
Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection
offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of
peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you
donate on Good Friday, you are supporting Christians
in the Holy Land. Please be as generous as your
abundance allows.

READING OF THE DAY
THE NEW COVENANT
When the prophet Jeremiah
coined the term “new covenant” he
was actually doing something quite
radical. For the Jewish people, there
was only one covenant, the one made between the
Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount
Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would
somehow supersede the covenant with a new one
would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But
in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the
Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as
superseding the past, establishing the reign of God
in a new way. And in today’s Gospel passage,
Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the language of
his “new commandment” of love when he tells of
the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to
die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent
ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the
dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol
of the kind of dying and self sacrifice to which
disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant
written deep within our hearts.

The grain of wheat must die to produce fruit.
Such dying must be cultivate by obedience and by
our covenant with God, rooted in love and

En las diócesis de los Estados Unidos, la práctica de cubrir cruces e
imágenes debe realizarse durante este fin de semana. Todas las cruces, con
excepción de la cruz de la procesión, permanecen cubiertas hasta el final
de la liturgia de la Pasión del Señor del Viernes Santo. ¿Por qué? ¿Qué
significa esta práctica tan antigua?
En un mundo donde se ha perdido el sentido y el propósito de ciertas
cosas, estos actos litúrgicos mantienen un sentido espiritual y místico que nos lleva al
misterio que es la realidad de Jesucristo en su manifestación. Esta práctica se realiza
desde el siglo XVIII. En el antiguo calendario litúrgico, comenzando en el Quinto
Domingo de Cuaresma se llamaba “Passiontide / la proximidad de la Pasión” debido a
que la historia de la Pasión del Señor es leída el Domingo de Ramos. De esta manera, este
rito probablemente es derivado de una costumbre que comenzó en Alemania en el siglo IX,
donde extendían un lienzo largo en frente del altar desde el comienzo de la Cuaresma. El
lienzo se llamaba “Hungertuch” (lienzo del hambre), el cual cubría completamente el altar
de la vista de los fieles durante este tiempo y no se removía hasta la lectura de la Pasión de
Cristo el Miércoles Santo utilizando las palabras “El velo del templo se ha quebrado en
dos”
Considero este rito algo místico, pero más aun, muy profundo, el hecho que Jesús se
encarne en nosotros, fue la causa por cual Su divinidad fuera constantemente cubierta por
Su humanidad. El cubrir las Cruces y los Santos es para muchos, un signo de la
humillación a la que Jesús se sometió por sí mismo para nuestra salvación. San Pablo hace
muchas referencias sobre esto.
En una época donde la superficialidad, la moda y el materialismo son la prueba de quienes
somos, Jesús nos invita a profundizar en nosotros mismos para buscar el significado de
quienes somos en realidad. El cubrirnos y estar en la oscuridad nos ofrece tiempo para
experimentar el desierto que tenemos en nuestras vidas, el entrar en el sepulcro, es una
ocasión para detenernos y pensar si queremos realmente estar en la luz. Pero ¿cómo
podemos querer la luz sino hemos comparado su belleza con la oscuridad?
Esta semana más de cien de nuestros jóvenes dejan su propio mundo, la familia, la
tecnología y sus amigos para vivir el encuentro con Jesús a través de su Retiro de
Confirmación. Ellos quieren encontrar las respuestas sobre sus cuestionamientos de fe.
Realmente esperamos que este encuentro sea un momento de reencuentro con el Espíritu
Santo.
Para ver claramente y ser transparente, necesitamos llorar en voz alta como nos enseñó
David en el Salmo 50 “Crea en mi un corazón puro, O Dios devuélveme la felicidad de tu
salvación y un espíritu resoluto”

LECTURA DEL DÍA
LA NUEVA ALIANZA
Cuando el profeta Jeremías creó
el término “nueva alianza” hacía algo
muy radical. Para el pueblo judío, sólo
había una alianza, la que el Señor Dios
había hecho con Israel por medio de Moisés en el
Monte Sinaí. Cuando Jeremías dice que de alguna
manera Dios va a reemplazar la antigua alianza con
una nueva, seguro que sus oyentes pensaban que era
algo muy atrevido. De ese modo Jeremías es un
predecesor de Jesús, quien, en el Evangelio de Juan
se presenta siempre como alguien que reemplaza el
pasado, estableciendo el Reino de Dios de una
manera nueva. Y en el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy,
Jesús, “la nueva alianza” habla con el lenguaje del
“nuevo mandamiento” de amor cuando menciona el
grano de trigo que muere y nuestra propia muerte al
egoísmo para poder resucitar con Cristo. Al finalizar
la Cuaresma y al prepararnos a entrar en la Semana
Santa, el grano de trigo que muere es un símbolo
excelente del tipo de muerte y autosacrificio al que
los discípulos están llamados, un símbolo de esa
nueva alianza escrita en lo más profundo de nuestro
corazón.

SOME EASY WAYS TO SHOW LOVE
“I give you a new commandment: love one
another. As I have loved you, so you also should
love one another. This is how all will know that
you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.” (John 13:34-35)
Try some of these simple ways to show love:

and anyone who works in a service capacity.
Smile at a stranger.
Treat everyone as if you like them – even if
you don’t.
Try to cheer up someone who is having a
bad day.
Write a thank you note when someone has
done a favor for you.
Do a good deed for someone who can’t
repay you.
