Welcoming Christ the Lord
Dear Parishioners of Saint Andrew:
On this Palm Sunday, we join the Church throughout the world to welcome Jesus Christ as he
enters the holy city of Jerusalem to accomplish our redemption. Like the first disciples we sing
“Hosanna to the Son of David” to acclaim Jesus as the Messiah. We also know that this triumphal
entry of Christ will culminate in the Paschal Mystery of the death and resurrection of the Lord.
These are the most solemn days of the year. Holy Week is a time of grace from God when we
accompany the Lord through these sacred events, not merely as spectators but as partakers for we are
members of the Body of Christ. It is my hope that you will keep this week holy by your prayer, reflection and participation in the liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil on
Holy Saturday. The complete liturgical schedule is found in the bulletin today.
There are many ways in which we can welcome Christ. First, we must be people of daily prayer who
have an open heart to reflect on God’s word in Sacred Scripture, in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament or in a quiet place at home. We also welcome Christ in those around us, beginning with our
family at home. We welcome Christ in those we meet throughout the day, whether at work, school,
in our neighborhoods or wherever our day takes us. In a particular way, we meet Christ in the poor
and needy. Christ himself told us that whatever we do to the least of our brothers and sisters we do
to Him (cf. Matthew 25, 31-46). So, when we give food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless or
clothing to the naked; when we welcome the stranger, care for the sick or visit those in prison, we
meet Christ Jesus himself.
We also welcome Christ in one another when we gather as parishioners for Mass. Recently, I have
met several people who have shared with me that over the past few months in their personal search
for God they have encountered God here at Saint Andrew Parish. Some are Catholics who had been
away from the practice of the faith; others are non-Catholics who have been searching for a spiritual
home. It is most encouraging for me as pastor to welcome these brothers and sisters as the grace of
God leads them closer to the Lord. Christian hospitality is an essential characteristic of any parish
that is true to its calling. As a very large parish, it is especially important that we remember to extend a warm and genuine welcome to those with whom we pray at Mass, both the familiar faces we
see every week and those whose faces we do not recognize. This is especially true on this Palm Sunday. In my own name and on behalf of all the parishioners of Saint Andrew, I welcome those who
join us for today’s solemn liturgy. I invite you to consider making Saint Andrew your parish and to
join us regularly for Mass. As we welcome Christ who is among us in all these ways, we pray that
He will welcome us one day in the eternal Jerusalem of heaven.
May the Lord continue to bless you and your family with His love!
Monsignor Michael A. Souckar
lo que hicieron por uno de estos hermanos míos más humildes, por mi mismo lo hicieron. (cf. Mateo 25, 3146). Así que, cuando damos de comer al hambriento, refugio a las personas si hogar o ropa al desnudo;

Evangelium Vitae to be marked with prayer and study
By Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, Priests for Life
I have been invited by the Vatican to help lead a special
prayer vigil in Rome on March 24 to commemorate the anniversary. Along with that, all of us at Priests for Life are
urging dioceses, churches and families to join these special prayers wherever they are, on the night before the anniversary, or on the day itself.
March 25 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of

GOOD FRIDAY RESOURCES RELEASED
On Good Friday, a pontifical collection is taken up in every parish in the United States. The proceeds from the
collection go to support ministries and works, largely under the direction of the Franciscans, in the Holy
Land.
The Holy Land Franciscans have developed a resource kit for dioceses and Catholic media to promote participation in the Good Friday Collection. Resources include: a poster, an advertisement, a prayer card, a
bookmark and a bulletin/pulpit announcement that can be used in either a parish or school setting. The promotional material is in Spanish and English.
The Pontifical Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace. Their support is a sign of Christian unity, which helps protect the Holy Places. This annual Good Friday Collection
unites all Christians with the Holy Land.
These funds are used to support Catholic schools, parishes and religious education in the Holy Land. The
Good Friday collection also preserves the shrines for pilgrims and provides assistance, including housing and
food, for the poor and needy.
The Custos of the Holy Land, Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, OFM, said, “It is important that the Christians all
over the world to support the Church in the Holy Land, so we can continue our work.”
Last year’s Good Friday Collection provided support for the Holy Land in these ways:
• Supported 29 parishes, four homes for orphans, three academic institutions
• Helped keep 16 schools open for over 10,000 pre-K through grade 12 students
• Provided 398 homes benefitting Christian families
• Helped rehabilitate over 100 homes for Christians families in the last five years
• Provided senior care facilities in Bethlehem and Nazareth
• Created 1,500 jobs in the Holy Land
• Preserved 74 sanctuaries and shrines from the life of Jesus and the prophets
• Supported over 100 men preparing to be priests or brothers
There is a “Good Friday Information” page at http://www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday-resources/ that includes additional information for print and digital transmission. You are encouraged to use the material. It is
available for no charge.

March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
Gospel reading Mark 11:1-10 [To be read aloud]
When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and
said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever
sat. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone should say to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it
back here at once.’” So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them
to do it. So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And he sat on it.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding him
as well as those following kept crying out: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our
father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!”
Brief commentary:
Today we begin the Christian Great Week: although all “times and all seasons belong to Him,” Christians nonetheless honor this week
as different, as ‘Holy’. Holy Week stands at the foundation and core of the Christian experience of salvation, but also at the foundation
and core of all history, for this is the Passover of Christ’s suffering, death, burial and glorious resurrection. The celebration of Palm
Sunday (‘Hosanna Sunday’ in the churches of the East) commemorates the triumphant entrance of Jesus of Nazareth through the
gates of Jerusalem on the threshold of his suffering. Similarly, we welcome Christ anew through the door of our hearts, our homes,
our parishes and communities. With palms (ancient symbols of victory) we hold them high joining the choir of ‘hosannas’ (“save us”
in Hebrew), and bring these blessed palms into our homes to mark them as homes of believers. This Sunday too is called Passion Sunday, because as a Church we join the recital of the entire Passion narrative of a gospel. Indeed, we are included as participants in the
reading, with the awareness that somehow we are all participants in the suffering of the Lord. And joining him in his Passion, we hope
in his mercy to have a share in his glorious resurrection. Both the reading from Isaiah and the traditional praying of the twenty-second
psalm about a righteous sufferer, applied to Jesus by the earliest Christians, allow us to understand the suffering of Jesus – as an act of
total loving and redemptive self-donation – as the fulfillment of God’s saving plan for the world. The Christological hymn found in
Paul’s letter to the Philippians expresses in a few words the core narrative of Jesus’ incarnation, solidarity with the human race, humility, obedient suffering and ignominious death on the cross, his resurrection and supreme exaltation as Lord “to the glory of God the
Father.” It is the story of how God “who so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son…” It is the proclamation of the
Christian gospel of the redemptive and victorious love of Jesus Christ. By his entrance on a donkey through Jerusalem’s eastern gate,
Jesus was associating himself with the prophetic description of the Messiah’s humble coming found in the book of the prophet Zechariah. When Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, surrounded by the crowds including the poor, outcasts, sinners, and infirmed, he reminds the
rulers of what they should be doing in service to the people. By so doing, Jesus was also showing that his version of ‘messiah’ was not
as a politico-military ruler, but as the humble servant of the Lord and compassionate savior of the people. Such as entrance was therefore both inspiring and highly provocative, and thus set into motion the process of those opposed to him which would lead to his
death.
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
• Holy Week is the heart of the Christian calendar, because the Passover of the Lord Jesus is the hallmark of the mission and the
heart of the Christian experience of salvation.
• Holy Week is also our Passover when Christians, joined to Jesus’ death and resurrection, recall our own passage from death to life
and new birth as God’s people.
• Palm Sunday calls us to “open wide the doors of our hearts, and homes, and lives, to Jesus Christ.” It reminds the Church to extend
Jesus’ mission to the poor, the outcast, and the sinner, the suffering; for Jesus Christ is the servant of the God and savior of
the people.
For our shared or personal reflection:
After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.
• What does Holy Week represent to me? What does it call me to?
• How have I experienced the saving grace of death to sin and new life in Jesus Christ?
• How am I involved in the Church’s mission to the poor, the outcast, the sinner, the suffering in my local community and in the
world?

celebración me transforme y a nuestro mundo?

Love Mercy
Jesus’ Passion invites us to contemplate authority and mercy.
Jesus used his authority to empty himself for all people, especially those undeserving of his mercy. We are called to use our
authority to show mercy too. Whether suffering is self-inflicted
or caused by factors beyond someone’s control, Jesus calls us
to heal and serve.
Imagine how our Blessed Mother felt watching Jesus’ passion.
Like Mary, many families feel powerless as they watch their
loved ones suffer addictions to drugs and alcohol – paths that
often lead to death. We can bring healing to addicts rejected by
a society that often views their suffering as self-inflicted.
Catholic Charities’ St. Luke’s Center is the only atholic drug
treatment facility in South Florida. Each day 30 people get the
opportunity to enter Recovery at this special place.
Please, pray for our brothers and sisters in treatment – that
God will strengthen them, heal them, and guide them to
choose life.
You can give someone the chance to overcome addiction by
donating at www.ccadm.org/stlu

Year of Consecrated Life
From the very beginning of the

about following Christ with greater
freedom and imitating him more
closely through the practice of the
evangelical counsels, each in their
own way leading a life dedicated

PROPHETIC ANOINTING
UNCIÓN PROFÉTICA
The solemnity of today’s readings invites us into silent contemplation of the mystery of our redemption. There are so many
levels on which to understand the events of the Passion. The
woman who anoints Jesus acts prophetically in a way that the
other disciples do not yet grasp. Anointing is for priests, prophets, and kings, and also for the preparation of the dead. It is for
healing and for holiness. Her action acknowledges the imminent
events of the passion and death of the Lord, and points toward
his resurrection and triumph over evil and death. He is priest and
victim, prophet and God, King and Lord. All these things are
acknowledged in her prophetic anointing.

SUFFERING
SUFRIMIENTO
Jesus did not come to do away with suffering or
remove it. He came to fill it with his presence.
Jesús no vino a eliminar el sufrimiento, sino a
sufrir con nosotros. El hombre que sufre no es inútil
ni inactivo.
