Parish Improvement Project
A Fundraising Campaign for Improvements to our Parish
We are asking each parish family to make a commitment towards
the Parish Improvement Project (PIP):
1. Make a Pledge. Pledge payments can be made
weekly or monthly.
2. Purchase an Engraved Tile. The tiles will be displayed in the
new courtyard outside the church’s east doors.
Pledge and tile forms are available at the Parish Center and/or
Church entrances. We also ask that you please take a pledge form
home and ask your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to
support the sustainability and the future of St. Genevieve.

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Readings: Is 45:1, 4-6; Ps 96:1, 3-5, 7-10; 1 Thes 1:1-5b; Mt 22:15-21
Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by
the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to
the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives
Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens
doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that
the people will know that “I am the Lord,” and that “there is none
besides me.”
Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion--that in God
alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on
our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in
the Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what
is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.
HEADS OR TAILS?
Heads or tails? There are two sides to every coin, and often we
utilize this fact to decide the outcome of things. A coin toss
determines who kicks off and receives in a football game, of
course, but there are undoubtedly other occasions when we flip
a coin--literally or figuratively--to decide a course of action. The
implication is that while there are two sides, only one side is
important.
HEADS AND TAILS . . .
We don’t know what was on the flip side of the coin with Caesar’s
image, but it probably didn’t say “In God We Trust.” Jesus’ antagonists phrased their question about the lawfulness of paying taxes
to Caesar in such a way as to prompt a simple yes or no answer. And
for Jesus, neither of these answers would have been good. So he foils
them at their own game, telling the Pharisees and the Herodians
to give both Caesar and God their due, and thus recognizing the
importance of both earthly work and heavenly pursuits. Gotcha!
We are all called to some earthly work or vocation. Whether it
is a vocation in the clerical sense, the industrial or career sense,
or in the sense of being single, married, or part of a family, it is
incumbent upon us all to give the work its due. And as we do so,
may we never forget that just as the Lord led Cyrus by the hand,
so God leads us. In referring to our work of faith, Paul echoes the
essence of Jesus’ response to those that challenged him: in our
earthly work, there, also, is God. Ben Franklin once wrote that
nothing is certain but death and taxes. Maybe that’s how
Caesar saw it, too. Yet without even flipping a coin, we can tell
that heads or tails don’t really matter, because we know that
God is part of the mix.

¿CARA O SELLO?
¿Cara o sello? Hay dos lados en toda moneda, y con frecuencia
utilizamos ese factor para decidir el resultado de las cosas. El
lanzamiento de una moneda determina quién patea y quién recibe
en un juego de fútbol, por supuesto, pero sin duda hay otras
ocasiones en que lanzamos una moneda -literal o figurativamentepara decidir un curso de acción. La implicación es que aunque hay
dos lados, sólo uno es importante
CARA Y SELLO . . .
No sabemos qué había en el lado de la moneda con la imagen del
César, pero probablemente no decía “En Dios confiamos”. Los
antagonistas de Jesús formularon su pregunta sobre la legalidad de
pagar impuestos al César en tal forma que un simple sí o no bastaba.
Y para Jesús, ninguna de esas dos respuestas habría sido favorable.
Pero él los vence con su propio juego al decirles a los fariseos y
a los herodianos que den tanto al César como a Dios lo que les
corresponde, reconociendo así la importancia tanto del trabajo
terrenal como de las ocupaciones celestiales. ¡Te gané!
Somos llamados a un trabajo terrenal o vocación. Ya sea una
vocación en el sentido clerical, en el industrial o en una carrera, o
en el sentido de ser soltero, casado, o parte de una familia, es que
le demos al trabajo el esfuerzo que merece. Y al hacerlo, nunca
olvidemos que así como Dios condujo de la mano a Ciro, así Dios
nos guía a nosotros. Al referirse a nuestro trabajo en la fe, Pablo
hace eco a la esencia de la respuesta de Jesús a quienes lo retaron:
en nuestro trabajo terrenal, allí también está Dios. Ben Franklin una
vez escribió que no hay nada cierto sino la muerte y los impuestos.
Quizás así es como César lo veía también. Pero sin lanzar la moneda,
podemos afirmar que cara o sello no importa realmente, porque
sabemos que Dios es parte de la mezcla.

Hope After Abortion
What is Project Rachel?
Without a doubt, abortion can be one of the most traumatic
experiences a person can have. Both before and after an abortion,
feelings of fear, anxiety, guilt, panic and depression are common not only for the woman who undergoes the procedure but also for
the father of the unborn child, the grandparents, close friends, even
medical personnel.
For Catholics, the pain of an abortion is intensified by a sense of
alienation from God and Church. If you are in this position, we
want you to know that your Church understands and cares. We are a
loving and forgiving church, reaching out to you in compassion and
concern.
Project Rachel is named for the Old Testament figure who wept
inconsolably over the loss of her children. Modeled after similar
efforts in many dioceses in the United States, the program is
sponsored by the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Office of Respect Life.
Project Rachel, like the Sacrament it includes, is a sensitive, private
and confidential experience. If you wish you can be put in touch
with a priest outside your home community. Your meeting with the
priest will focus on preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Generally, the process will include counseling, prayer and scripture.

Is All Saints Day a Holy Day of Obligation?

In the United States and other countries, the bishops have received permission from the Vatican to abrogate (temporarily waive) the
requirement for Catholics to attend Mass on certain Holy Days of Obligation when those Holy Days fall on either Saturday or Monday.
Because of this, some Catholics have become confused about whether certain Holy Days are, in fact, Holy Days of Obligation.
All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. However, because it falls on a Saturday this year, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated.
Of course, even if we aren’t required to attend, celebrating All Saints Day by attending Mass is a wonderful way to honor the saints, who
constantly intercede with God for us.

Coronation will be Postponed
Our Parish Pageant will be Extended
Due to the many events and projects that will be taking place here at our parish in the
next few months we have decided to extend our Parish Pageant until the Spring of 2015.
Please stay tuned for the new date of our coronation gala. Our pageant candidates will
continue selling raffle tickets and solicitating sponsors for the souvenir book pages
throughout this time. This extension also gives an opportunity to other parishioners to
join the pageant.

Encuentro Matrimonial Mundial
Reclutamiento Hoy Despues de Misa
El Encuentro Matrimonial Mundial (EMM) es un movimiento
eclesial que promueve unos Fines De Semana diseñados para
intentar ayudar a los matrimonios a mejorar su relación de pareja
mediante la experiencia de unas técnicas de comunicación que
les lleven a conocerse más profundamente y a revitalizar su vida
conyugal.
Durante el Fin De Semana, las parejas asistentes aprenden y
experimentan un método estructurado de comunicación, que
promueve la escucha, el autoconocimiento y el respeto mutuo.
También se analiza la presencia de Dios en la vida de la pareja,
aunque no existe una formación religiosa directa. Según sus
organizadores, los Fines De Semana de Encuentro Matrimonial no
son retiros espirituales, ni clínicas matrimoniales, ni dinámica de
grupos, ni sustituyen a la terapia psicológica si fuese necesaria.
Se trata de un tiempo pensado para dar a los matrimonios la
oportunidad de revisar su relación de pareja, compartiendo entre
ellos sentimientos, desilusiones y esperanzas, con la finalidad de
renovar su ilusión y revitalizar su matrimonio.

Necesitamos Voluntarios/as
Estamos en busca de voluntarios/as (de 16 años en adelante) que esten disponibles durante la Misa de 2:00
p.m. para ayudarnos con el proyector. El proyector se ha convertido en una herramienta esencial para
mostrar la letra de los cantos de la Misa. Los voluntarios/as deben de saber usar el programa “powerpoint”;
esta asignación es muy fácil y solo tomaría 5 minutos de entrenamiento. Esperamos tener 4 - 5 voluntarios
para rotarlos cada semana. Esta tambien es una gran forma de recibir horas de servicio comunitario para las

¿Es Día de Todos los Santos un Día de Precepto?
