Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma
St. Mary Parish, Waltham
March 22, 2015
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last week, the Knights of Columbus held their second
induction ceremony for men of St. Mary’s Parish. The
Knights of Columbus is a fraternal order established in New
Haven Connecticut by Fr. Michael McGivny. Fr. McGivney
served the poor immigrant population and buried many men
who died in mills. These men left behind women and
children with no safety net. The death of the man in the
family at that time could also be a death sentence for the
family. Fr. McGivney devised a fraternal order that would
gather resources to provide for families in the event of a
tragedy as well as bring the men closer to the Church. The
Knights was founded to help men and their families in life or
death. Years ago, Saint Mary’s had a Knights of Columbus
Council. I don’t know anything about it or when it stopped. I
do know that a former parishioner of St. Mary’s, Mr. John
McDevitt, was the Supreme Knight of the Knights of
Columbus. This is the same John McDevitt for whom the
nearby middle school was named. He was also the former
superintendent of Waltham Public Schools. Mr. McDevitt
was the worldwide leader of the knights. I commend the 10
men who were inducted and have promised to live faithfully
as husbands, fathers and sons of the Church. A minimum
number of 20 is required to establish a new parish council.
When that time comes, we will name it the John McDevitt
Knights of Columbus Council.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Whoever serves me must
follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.
The Father will honor whoever serves me.” When we help
the poor we are truly followers of Jesus, servant of the poor.
As you place your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box,
know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are
suffering and you give them Easter hope and joy.
Jesus, we seek refuge in your loving heart and so we pray:
Jesus, keep us close to you. For the grace to be your servant,
Jesus, keep us close to you. For all members of the Society
who model a life of service, Jesus, keep them close to you.
For our families and friends who teach us how to be
compassionate, Jesus, keep them close to you. For all those
who are suffering, especially the sick and the dying, Jesus,
keep them close to you. Amen.

FROM FATHER DAVID...
Recently I organized a Journey of Faith, Charity and Hope to
Uganda, and I invited some St. Mary Parishioners to join
me. Sheila Bennett and Kim O'Callaghan volunteered to be
part of this historical trip. I hope to organize another trip
soon for next year, and you are welcome to join me! Below,
Sheila tells of her experiences in Africa.
Fr. David
Journey of Faith, Charity and Hope to Uganda!
by Sheila Bennett (One very happy visitor to Uganda! )
I’ve been asked to say a few words about my trip to
Uganda with Kim O’Callaghan. First, Uganda is not a
vacation destination. You need shots and meds to go there.
Let me tell you, I could not have imagined how wonderful a
country it is. The people were friendly. They had no
problem talking to us. I would say one of the worst things
that happened to me was drinking instant coffee each day. I
know what you’re thinking… “what a woose”… but that’s
me. We had a few bumps in the road, but nothing Kim and I
couldn’t handle: a missed flight, missing luggage; no
problem… we bought a few thing to hold us over.
A day after we arrived, we left for Paraa Safari Lodge in
the western side of Uganda for our safari. During the first
night there, I was standing alongside the River Nile
watching the sunset. I kept thinking Moses was floating on
this same river in a basket just a wee bit up the river. The
sunset was so exciting, and then I heard a noise like some
breaking branches. I asked one of the guards, “What is the
noise I am hearing?” He told me it was probably elephants
looking for tender leaves (it was dry season there). So I
walked by the trees to see if I could see anything. I could
just about see the elephant! I walked a little further, and
suddenly a baby elephant came out the trees about 15 feet
from me and started munching on the leaves. I was in total
awe at this point! We were also told to make sure we locked
our sliding door or we could have visits from baboons!
Next day: up at 5:30 a.m. for the ride through the park
looking for wild animals. No lions… a bit of a
disappointment. But, we did see many elephants, warthogs,
antelopes, wild beast, giraffes, yellow-billed storks,
cormorants, kingfishers, baboons… to name just a few
sightings. Later that day we went out on a boat. We lost
count of how many hippos and elephants and giraffes while
cruising along the Nile. We went out as far as Murchison
Falls. That was really awesome!
Next day: back to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. If
you think Boston or New York has fierce traffic, triple that
and you are in Kampala!
On Saturday, we went to the small village of Buwama to
the Buwungu Primary School. This is the school where Fr.
David Martin Ssentamu, our host, went – and now he’s
called an Old Boy! We met the school officials and teachers.
4
They are so dedicated to these kids; it just brought tears to
my eyes. The following day we were to have a fund raiser.
The original school building was condemned and they were
in the process of rebuilding another school. It still needs a
lot of work. The second bad thing that kept happening to
Kim and me was frightening the children. A lot of them
have never seen a white person or have had very little
contact with white people. It was hard on my feelings. I just
really like being with children, so to say hi and have
children crying and running away was tough to take. We
met Fr David’s parents, uncle, sister (who left her husband
and children in Kampala to cook our meals for 2 days),
niece, and his cousin Flavia, who went above and beyond
helping us the whole time we were there.
We went to Nsambya Babies Home in Kampala, but they
were out with various families for the Christmas vacation.
We also visited Our Lady Shrine in Kiwamirembe for Mass,
Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine in Namugongo for Adoration, a
nursing home called Nalukolongo, and a special needs home
called L’Arche Uganda.
One of the last things we saw was the Ndere Dance
Troupe. They do performances of various Ugandan
traditional dances. WOW, they were good! If they ever
come to Boston, I’ll gladly go again. This is the majority of
things we did, but not all. We will be having a presentation
on Wednesday, April 15, after the 12:10 Mass; and one on
Sunday, April 19, after the 10:00 a.m. Mass.
ONLY A CHILD FUNDRAISER
Waltham’s George Leger has been helping children and
teens in Guatemala for 21 years. He runs a shelter and a
workshop for up to ten young people and has helped
hundreds. Some of the original homeless street kids have
graduated from high school or college! George and the kids
need your help. Please join us for a fund raising celebration
at the American Legion Hall, 215 Waverly Oaks Road,
Waltham on Saturday, April 11 at 7 p.m. If you can’t make
it, a donation would be appreciated. You can send a check to
Only A Child, Box 990885, Boston, MA 02199. For more
information, please contact George Leger at 781-642-9317
or [email protected]. Tickets are $30 ($20 for seniors)
and can be ordered via paypal at onlyachild.org.
EASTER COLLECTION
At Easter, we honor and celebrate our priests. Our priests
have dedicated their lives to serving the Catholic faithful
here in the Archdiocese of Boston; now, it is our turn to
fulfill the promises made to care for them in their time of
need. Please give generously to the Easter collection, which
will directly benefit the 628 active and senior diocesan
priests whose health and well-being are cared for through the
Clergy Health and Retirement Trust. Thank you in advance
for your support of this critical effort.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence – Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to
the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed
on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of
abstinence, meat may not be eaten at all.
Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their
60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On
these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken
according to each one’s needs, but together they should not
equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.
These Lenten regulations state the minimum requirements.
Other recommended practices during this season include
participating in daily Mass and fasting on other days.

Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday are big days and always
lead to parking issues after the 10:00 a.m. Mass. We
encourage parishioners to make use of the Common Street
parking garage to alleviate congestion and allow
worshippers to get out and into the church complex.
Remember even though there is space before the 10:00 a.m.
Mass, the people arriving for the 11:30 a.m. Mass make it
challenging to exit. The parking garage is free on Sunday.

AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA
