The Battle of Flowers Association announced on Friday that
Chairman and CEO of Spurs Sports and Entertainment Peter M.
Holt would be leading the parade as the Grand Marshal during
the 2015 Battle of Flowers parade.
During Holt’s 18 years as an owner of the San Antonio Spurs,
the team has become one of the most successful and well known
franchises in sports history. Although Holt was unable to attend the press conference at the AT&T Center, his son Peter
John Holt and daughter Corinna Holt Richter represented the
family’s role in Fiesta celebrations.

CIA Bakery is back: Pop-up style

If you’ve missed the chorizo
scones, opera cakes and unique
agua frescas you’re in luck- the
former CIA Bakery Cafe is returning in pop-up form.
Through April 16, customers can enjoy breakfast breads,
specialty pastries, salads and
savory hot dishes like macaroni
and cheese with bacon or Croque
Monsieur bites.
Located on the CIA campus
at the Pearl, the Cafe provides
students in the baking and pastry
arts program with six weeks of
hands-on experience working
in a real bakery environment.
The Culinary program has a
similar arrangement with Nao
at the Pearl, where students gain
industry experience working in
a restaurant before they graduate
the program.
“These are the bakers, this
is the baking-pastry program,
so this is their last stint before
they graduate is to go through
a restaurant, and theirs should
be a cafe,” Jenny Placette ′10,
the Cafe’s Front-of-the-House
Manager said. “So that’s why
we opened the cafe up for six
weeks. They can go through the
front-of-the house and back-ofthe house service.”

during their time at the cafe.
Unfortunately for customers, the
bakery will only remain open
for six weeks, but the CIA plans
to host future pop-ups for every
graduating class.
“The entry date for the bakers
is September, so they should
come through the same time each
year,” Placette added. “People
are really excited to see their
favorite foods and desserts come
back again.”
The CIA Bakery Cafe is open
Monday through Friday for
breakfast and lunch from 8 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The Cafe will close on
weekends and on April 3. The
bakery is located at 312 Pearl
Parkway, Suite 2102, across

The plant is currently under
the reins of Patrick Garcia, son
of Peter Garcia, who founded the
company in 1939.
Like his father did before his
death in 2001, Patrick is known
to take initiative when it comes
to improving the city.
He’s a part of the Westside
Development Corporation, the
West San Antonio Chamber of
Commerce, and the San Antonio
Economic Development Foundation to ensure the growth of the
Westside community is continuous.
“While his business is of course
his passion, he has a very strong
commitment to the Westside
of San Antonio, and I’ve really
leaned on him a lot for guidance,”
Dist.6 Councilman Lopez told La
Prensa.
Patrick is one to participate in
community town hall meetings,
donate back-to-school backpacks
for underprivileged kids in the
community and even offer free
English classes to some of his
employees.
“Division has a strong commitment and I think that has been
the basis of all of their success,”
Lopez said. “They’re not just here
for a short while, they’re committed to the community.”

COMMENTARY... Calendario de la comunidad
Matan inmigrantes y no pasa nada
Cuando la
policía mata a
un inmigrante en
Estados Unidos,
la indignación
es la misma que
cuando mata un
Jorge Ramos afro-americano.
Pero la respuesta
es distinta. Tras la muerte de tres
mexicanos a manos de la policía
no hemos visto las protestas y las
marchas que ocurrieron luego de
las muertes de los afro-americanos
Michael Brown en Ferguson,
Missouri, y Eric Garner en Nueva
York. Algo no está bien aquí.
El problema es que, además de
la tragedia por sus muertes, los
latinos e inmigrantes no han perdido su miedo ante la policía y no
confían en que se hará justicia. Por
eso la reacción es tan tibia. Pero no
debería ser así.
A nivel oficial parecería que la
muerte de inmigrantes es menos
importante que la de ciudadanos
norteamericanos. Ni el presidente
Barack Obama, ni el Procurador
General, Eric Holder, ni algún líder
republicano han salido en público a
denunciar que la policía mató a tres
inmigrantes mexicanos en menos
de tres semanas.
El gobierno mexicano envió una
carta de protesta a Washington,
diciendo que no son hechos aislados, pero no ha querido convertir
estas tres muertes en un asunto central que tense las relaciones bilaterales. Los mexicanos que viven en
Estados Unidos están solos; saben
que no son una prioridad para el
gobierno en la Ciudad de México.
Matan mexicanos y no pasa nada.
Esto es lo que pasó:
1. El 10 de febrero la policía de
Pasco, estado de Washington, mató
al mexicano Antonio Zambrano
luego que el indigente les aventó
piedras, según muestra un video.
2. El 20 de febrero la policía de
Grapevine, Texas, mató al mexicano Rubén García luego de una
persecución. “¿Me vas a matar?”
aparentemente le preguntó García
a un agente de la policía, con los
brazos en alto, según la versión de
su cuñado. Sí, lo mataron: Recibió
dos disparos en el pecho.
3. Y por último, el 27 de febrero
la policía de Santa Ana, California,
mató al mexicano Ernesto Canepa,
quien era sospechoso de robo y a
quien le encontraron una pistola de
perdigones en su auto. La familia
de Canepa dice que tenía dos trabajos y dos hijos.
A estas tres muertes –que están
bajo investigación– hay que sumar
las de al menos 17 mexicanos que
han muerto en enfrentamientos
con la Patrulla Fronteriza desde el
2010, de acuerdo con las cifras de
la organización Southern Border
Communities Coalition.
La triste realidad es que la
mayoría de estas muertes pasan
desapercibidas, y pocas veces se
sabe realmente lo qué pasó. La
impunidad es casi total. Nadie,
generalmente, termina en la cárcel.
Otra triste conclusión es que
tampoco existe una expectativa
de justicia. No me imagino al Departamento de Justicia haciendo
una investigación a fondo sobre
los abusos de la policía contra
inmigrantes latinoamericanos.
Estoy seguro que, si la hicieran,
sus conclusiones serían muy parecidas a las de su reciente informe
sobre el maltrato de la policía de
Ferguson contra afro-americanos:
detenciones sin razón, uso de lenguaje racista, abuso de fuerza y la
terrible sensación de que no son
tratados justamente.
Esta sensación de injusticia
contra los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos está reforzada por
el lenguaje de muchos políticos,
tanto en Washington como fuera
de Washington, que los califican
de “criminales”. Los políticos son
culpables de crear este falso estereotipo del inmigrante; una cosa es
estar aquí ilegalmente y otra, muy
distinta, es cometer crímenes. Y,
siguiendo el mismo y equivocado
argumento, muchos departamentos
de policía de Estados Unidos tratan
a los inmigrantes como “criminales” aunque lo no sean.
No, a pesar de lo que diga la
Declaración de Independencia, en
Estados Unidos no todos tratados
como iguales. Algunos, por el
simple hecho de haber nacido en
el extranjero, hablar con acento
y tener otro color de piel, pueden
perder la vida a manos de quien los
debería proteger: la policía.

Estudiantes con calificación de “F”

Las universidades son, definitivamente, aquellos lugares donde “uno
puede respirar aire puro”. No es que
existe literalmente aire más purificado o de mejor calidad, sino que
estos centros de estudios permiten la
libertad de expresión como ningún
otro recinto público o privado.
En tal sentido, en las universidades se permite la discusión de
temas –ideológicos o no ideológicos— altamente controversiales
que, en algunos casos, son sancionados por el mismo ordenamiento
jurídico estatal y/o federal.
Seguramente muchos se acuerdan
de Andrew Martínez (Q.E.P.D.),
el “naked guy”, estudiante de la
Universidad de California Berkeley
a principios de los 1990s, quién decidió atender a sus clases en ropa de
Adán porque sintió el deber de protestar contra la “represión social”.
Por otra parte, recientemente
el organismo legislativo de los
estudiantes de la Universidad de
California Irvine, donde tuve la
oportunidad de estudiar una licenciatura y también impartir clases en
la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas,
aprobó una resolución en contra del
supuesto simbolismo represivo que
representa la bandera nacional de
Estados Unidos.
Con un voto de 6 a 4, los legisladores estudiantiles manifestaron
que “la bandera norteamericana
ha estado flameando en instancias
del colonialismo e imperialismo”.
También dijeron que cualquier tipo
de bandera “construye un paradigma
de conformidad y homogeniza
estándares”.
Por lo tanto, la bandera de Estados Unidos y de cualquier país
fue prohibida dentro de su centro
de estudiantes, un recinto pequeño
ubicado al frente del edificio de
Administración.
La Universidad de California
Irvine es conocida principalmente
por sus programas académicos
de investigación científica, por su
calidad de docentes y por el conservadurismo que aflora en la ciudad
de Irvine. Las controversias políticas
normalmente son raras; apenas se
escuchan a nivel local.
Sin embargo, la legislación estudiantil contra la bandera norteame­
ricana se convirtió en una noticia
nacional, incluso llegó repercutir en
el ámbito internacional. La gente en
el extranjero seguramente se preguntaba: ¿Cómo es posible que los
mismos norteamericanos prohíban
su bandera en su propia patria?
Desde mi punto de vista, la resolución del cuerpo legislativo de los
estudiantes de UC Irvine fue una
decisión errada, aunque el concepto mismo de prohibirla puede
ser debatido, racionalizado e incluso
justificado.
Los legisladores estudiantiles er-
raron porque nunca consultaron con
la población que los eligió, alrededor
de 30,000 estudiantes. Inicialmente
deberían haber creado centros de
discusión sobre el tema y luego proceder de acuerdo a las convicciones
de la gente y no según sus intereses
ideológicos.
El cuerpo de legisladores de UC
Irvine se olvidó una de las enseñanzas fundamentales de los sistemas
democráticos. El poder político real
no se encuentra dentro sus instituciones de gobierno, sino reside en
la gente (en los 30,000 estudiantes).
Hoy, estos legisladores estudiantiles están pagando su inocencia
y su falta de tino político. Obtuvieron una “A” en activismo político,
pero se aplazaron con una “F”
en democra­cia y administración
pública.

Just a Thought: Activist Jaime Martinez (Si Se Puede!)
This week’s
column is
about my longtime friend and
union activist,
Jaime Martinez. I have
marched with
Steve Walker him on many
occasions, including picket lines on SW Military
Drive in the nineties. I have also participated in other protests with him,
as well as the annual Cesar Chavez
March for well over 16 years.
Currently, he is in St. Luke’s
Hospital rehab unit recovering from
his two and a half year bout with
cancer. He was re-diagnosed with
cancer having beat it once before and
given only six months to live. With
constant chemo, he is still gallantly
fighting, and is classified by his doctors as a one percent survivor.
Many people will recall Jaime as
the one who spear-headed the push
to get City Council to rename a local
street in Cesar Chavez’s memory.
After a long uphill battle, the Council voted to rename Durango Boulevard, Cesar Chavez Boulevard.
Si Se Puede!
On Friday, March 20 there will
be a press conference to name a
street after Jaime as well. I recently
visited him in the hospital, where
he confirmed he will be at that press
conference for the renaming.
He also pointed out that he will be
ready for the annual Cesar E. Chavez
March on the 28. That means I will
also be there taking his photo as well
as all the marchers who participate.
I met Jaime through my friend
Pete Munoz, who worked with me at
McCollum High School. My buddy
Pete Munoz grew up with Jaime and
even played in a band with him back
when they were younger. While
Pete was working as a hall monitor,
he would share stories about Jaime
all the time. Eventually we met and
became friends as well.
Jaime, a man of the people and
concerned with civil rights, was obviously a very close friend of Cesar
Chavez whom I have also written
about in two past columns.
They worked together in the
movement for many years. In 1982,
I interviewed Jaime’s friend Cesar
(before I knew Jaime) for KENS
5 when he was here for a protest. I
can see why Jaime and Cesar were
friends, sharing the same purpose
and mission in life, to speak for
those who were unable to speak
for themselves. Jaime continues to
speak out when others don’t always
step up to the plate.
I can see first-hand how these two
icons impacted the community, having taught for a number of years in
the Harlandale community, made up
predominately of Hispanics.
One time I recall walking a protest
line with Jaime in a boycott of local
grocery stores, selling produce that
was picked by low paid migrants in
California that were forced to live in
substandard conditions.
I nervously held up my sign in
front of me, a little fearful, since the
grocery was literally down the block
from the school. I was worried some
of my students would see me and
talk about it at school.
Jaime told me, “Lower your
sign so people can see who you
are.” Timidly, I lowered my sign
and within 5 seconds I heard a
voice from a passing car yell, “Mr.
Walker, what are you doing?” I felt
embarrassed for the moment, as I
told her what I was up to. She yelled
back, “Si Se Puede!” Relieved, I
continued to picket. Sure enough,
Monday morning everyone in the
school heard that I had walked the
picket line! I look back now and
chuckle.
Although Jaime is battling health
issues, he keeps his head up and
his spirits high. I look forward to
our continued friendship as he has
made a huge difference in my life.

Why did they build it downtown?
Elected in mid-February in a
special election and sworn in the
first week of March, State Sen.
José Menéndez is already on the
radar
Earlier this week, he stepped up
to the plate and took on the controversial renovation of Alamo Plaza.
He introduced a measure to create
a Constitutional Amendment to tap
into the state’s Rainy Day Fund to
make those changes.
The make up over is needed.
The Alamo is the most visited
site in Texas. While one side of
the street that runs in front of the
Alamo gives the visitor a sense
of specialness. After all the site is
seen as the catalyst in Texas’ fight
for independence and is known as
the Cradle of Texas Liberty.
On the other side of the street is
something one would expect to at
a traveling carnival show. A full
scale commercial strip has opened
between Crockett and Houston
streets. Just in case the light show
that promotes these outlets isn’t
enough to grab your attention, each
has its own audio system to announce that you just walked by the
next best thing since sliced bread.
What the preservation side
wants may seem draconian in
scope, but it seems to many a good
start on what to do to reserve the
sanctity of the Alamo, if you recall
it is one of the five Spanish missions built in the 1500s. Simply
put, the Alamo is a chapel.
They’d like to see the Alamo and
its surrounding appear as closely as

possible to the time of 1836 and
that’s why they feel the buildings
across the street must be razed.
There’s a lot on the table of what
should be done for the proposed
renovation of Alamo Plaza and
like any major overhaul one has
to think green. Not necessarily the
environment green, but the green
that gets things done.
This is where Sen. Menéndez’
proposal could come in to play.
The money he wants from the
Rainy Day Fund is a quarter billion dollars or $250 million. Those
monies would be handled by the
newly created Alamo Preservation Fund.
From what has been said and
done, the money could make things
work. The city has a commis-
sion set up that for the most pasrt
includes notable historians. That
couldn’t hurt the effort.
Another thing working in favor
of the renovation is there will be
new faces watching the day to
day management of the Alamo.
The long-time caretakers, the
Daughters of the Republic of
Texas have been shown the door.
Now the search is on to find new
management.
The one real positive of Menédez’ amendment proposal is that
voters would have the final say on
its adoption.
Maybe soon with all the commercialism removed, locals will no
longer have to hear from surprised
tourists, “Why did they build it
downtown?”

managed to survive by sending
their laundry to other plants in
Houston and Corpus Christi until
they reopened in 2003.
“That fire really challenged
their fortitude but they came back
up, and the entire time that I’ve
known Mr. Garcia, his involvement in the community has always
been at the top,” Councilman
Lopez added.
Perhaps it’s in his blood, or perhaps it’s the example his father set
for him, but the fact of the matter
is that Patrick is passionate about
improving his company and his
community.
His father, Peter, shined shoes
and sold newspapers in the streets
of downtown before starting his
own laundry business.
He started laundering uniforms
for the troops at Fort Sam Houston
in 1939 and eventually rented a
building just outside of the Fort
Sam Houston gate on North
New Braunfels Avenue until he
finished building a new plant
across the street at 1919 North
New Braunfels, where he started
laundering uniforms for Lackland
Air Force Base and Wilford Hall
Medical Center.
During his time at this location
he met his wife, Cecilia, in 1951
who was employed as garment
checker. A year later they married, she became bookkeeper and
shortly after Patrick was born in
the apartment they had right above
the laundry.
In 1964, Peter developed the
plant on Old Highway 90 West,
the same location it’s at today.
Over the years they provided commercial laundry service to health
care facilities, hospitality services,
the military and more.
Patrick started helping at the
plant when he was 13 years old
and fondly remembers his father’s
commitment to his community
and employees.
“He was always doing kind
things,” Patrick told La Prensa.
He remembered a time he
bought an employee a refrigerator, car tires for someone else and
provided water for many families
in the area.
“His success came from helping
other people in the community,”
Patrick said. “He knew what it

11 personas las que resolvemos
los problemas”, expresó Taylor.
“En la situación ideal, estaríamos
trabajando tiempo completo con
un salario profesional”.
Añadió que el aumento de
sueldo les daría la oportunidad a
personas que necesitan un sueldo
profesional a involucrarse en el
Concilio.
“El tipo de personas que pueden
postularse para estos puestos es
muy limitado”, explicó Taylor.
“Unas personas no pueden darse
el lujo de postularse porque tienen
que sostener a sus familias, y
queremos un Concilio que verdaderamente sea representativo”.
Actualmente, la alcaldesa es
maestra dos clases en UTSA y anticipa que mantendrá su posición
como profesora el próximo año.

Peter passed away in 2001, but
his legacy lives on in his son.
“The problem,” Patrick joked,
“is that I inherited some of dad’s
genes.”
His “problem” has proved
to be beneficial for some of his
employees.
Adalberto ‘Beto’ Reyes, current
plant manager, has been with the
company for 34 years and worked
his way up from housekeeping.
Patrick pays for Beto’s weekly
English classes because he wants
to see him grow to his full potential.
“I think we all inherited a part of
my dad’s compassion for people,”
Garcia said.
Patrick’s son and two daughters are all involved in leadership
positions at Division Laundry and
Cleaners in one way or another.
Patrick assured the plant will remain a family-owned business for
years to come and will continue
to service the San Antonio community with the same diligence
and pride.

tiempo en Trinity University, pero
si se convierte en alcalde, tomaría
una posición en UTSA porque
esta más cerca al ayuntamiento.
Leticia Van de Putte
Leticia Van de Putte fue senadora del estado por 24 años y a ella
le interesa mejorar la seguridad
pública, los parques y el desarrollo
de trabajo. Además, destacó que
es muy buena para lograr que personas colaboren y trabajen juntas
para llegar a una meta.
La candidata comentó que es
bueno que los residentes tengan
el derecho de votar para aumentar
el sueldo de los miembros del
Concilio, pero que un aumento o
reducción de paga no afectaría su
pasión y deseo de ser líder en la
comunidad.
Si llegara a ser alcaldesa, Van
de Putte continuaría trabajando
como farmacéutica una vez a la
semana. Durante sus 24 años en
la legislatura trabajó en Davila
Pharmacy y pagó por la colegiatura universitaria de cuatro de sus
hijos a la misma vez.
“En ese tiempo trabajé de
noche, trabajé durante año nuevo
y en Navidad”, comentó Van de
Putte. “Yo sé que puedo servir

Tommy Adkisson sirvió como

Bexar por 16 años y sirvió en

WiseWear is currently working
with jewelry designers for companies like Louis Vuitton to create
fashionable and customizable
bracelets that include a sensor to
track people’s health.
Couture, high-end bracelets
will cost around $750, while
bracelets in the lower price range
will cost about $180.
WiseWear is also developing
a special bracelet aimed at senior
citizens who live with health
issues and diseases. Wilmink
discovered the need for a healthmonitoring device during his
grandfather’s battle against Alzheimer’s.

need water or if they need to rest.

Historic Alamo Stadium renovation
cited in engineering competition

Unintech Consulting Engineers,
Inc., of San Antonio, Texas, has
earned a National Recognition
Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American
Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 49th annual Engineering Excellence Awards for
the renovation of Alamo Stadium
in San Antonio.
Home to eight high school
football teams, the 22,000-seat
horseshoe-shaped stadium underwent its first major upgrade since
its opening in 1939. The structure’s location atop an old quarry
required complicated strategies to
incorporate new pier foundations
and retaining walls. In addition,
perimeter limestone walls and mu-
rals located at the main entrance
had to be preserved.
The project team applied a variety of cost-effective techniques
to tackle these challenges. The
strategy included a cantilever
beam underpinning system, pilasters, a permanent soil nail
network, drilled concrete piers, a
suspended foundation system, and
steel frames. The fully restored
venue is ready to kick off service
to many future generations of
teams and fans.
The project is among 170 engineering projects throughout
the nation and around the world
recognized by ACEC as preeminent engineering achievements
and eligible for one of the top
2015 Engineering Excellence
Awards. Judging for the Engineering Excellence Awards—known
industry-wide as the “Academy
Awards of the engineering industry”—took place in February and
was conducted by a panel of more
than 30 engineers, architects, government officials, media members,
and academics. Awards criteria
include uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social
and economic value, complexity,
and success in meeting goals.

Honor Awards, eight Grand
Awards and the prestigious
“Grand Conceptor Award” for
the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement, will
be announced at the Engineering
Excellence Awards Gala, a blacktie event to be held Tuesday, April

La familia va más allá de la biología
Hace unas semanas nos
despedimos de un grupo de
cuatro hermanos que pasó
nueve meses en nuestro Albergue de Emergencia. Todos
nos encariñamos mucho con
estos hermanitos que tenían
desde los 6 a 18 años de edad.
Estos niños son hijos de una
madre joven a la que le fue
imposible cuidar de ellos apro­
piadamente. Por lo general,
los niños que recibimos en St.
PJ’s solo pueden quedarse 90
días en nuestro albergue. Fue
muy difícil para el trabajador
social encontrar una casa de
acogimiento familiar para
estos cuatro hermanos porque
no hay suficientes casas disponibles en el condado de
Bexar.
Cada día que pasa, cinco
niños en el condado de Bexar
pierden su hogar y ahora esperan recibir todo el amor y cuidado que les podamos ofrecer.
Al ver como los niños de
hoy se desarrollan, podemos
darnos cuenta de que las familias tradicionales poco a
poco desaparecen. Muchos
niños hoy en día son criados
por madres solteras, padres,
abuelas, tíos o tías.
¿Pero qué pasa con los niños
que no tienen familia?
En el 2014, cerca de 2,000
niños en San Antonio perdieron su hogar por abuso o
negligencia. Desafortunadamente, el futuro de un niño
se paraliza mientras la Corte,
abogados, trabajadores so-
ciales y terapeutas intentan
encontrar la mejor solución
para cada caso que entra al
sistema. Pero lo que vemos
con más frecuencia es que
lo que estos niños realmente
necesitan es un hogar estable
y lleno de amor que les ayude
a comenzar a sanar y superar
el trauma que sufrieron. Estos
niños quieren una familia que
los ame incondicionalmente.
No es una tarea fácil que
se logre sola. Los niños que
han sido víctimas de abuso o
negligencia batallan mucho
emocionalmente. Terminan
levantando “paredes” para protegerse y no acercarse mucho a
los adultos. Nuestro trabajo es
derribar esas paredes.

It was a marriage
of art and medicine

Mary Aubrey Keating, an
opera singer and San Antonio
native who later enjoyed success
as a painter, fell in love and married Dr. Peter McCall Keating,
a pioneering orthopedic surgeon
who practiced at the old Robert
B. Green Memorial Hospital.
The year was 1921.
That marriage of art and medicine continues. On March 12,
two murals painted by Ms. Keating in the 1930s will be donated by her family to University
Health System’s historic Robert
B. Green Campus.
Mrs. Keating — whose subject matter embraced life in San
Antonio and throughout Latin
America — studied art in Mexico in the early 1930s, rubbing
elbows with famed muralists
Diego Rivera and José Clemente
Orozco. During World War II,
Dr. Keating oversaw medical
operations in the Panama Canal
Zone, bringing his family along,
and Mrs. Keating drew further
inspiration from life and culture
in Central America.
Today her work can be seen in
art galleries in San Antonio and
across the country. Her murals
are displayed at the former Kelly
Air Force Base, the Bright Shawl
and the San Antonio Conservation Society.
“She just loved everything
about Hispanic culture,” Mrs.
Aubrey Keating Carter, who
taught Spanish for 35 years at
Milton Academy in Massachusetts, and wrote four children’s
books said. “She loved the colors, she loved the beauty, the
gentleness, the passion. She just
fell in love with it.”
Mrs. Keating passed away in
1953. Dr. Keating, who went
on to head the Warm Springs
Foundation in Gonzales, died six
years later.
Mrs. Carter said she and her
surviving brother, Peter M. Keating of Culver City, Calif., were
happy to donate the pieces to
the Robert B. Green, where they
used to play outside as children
while their father performed
surgery inside.
“That’s where Daddy saw
so many of his patients, and I
thought that that would be the
place that both of them would
want them to go,” she said.
The murals will complement
the more than 300 original works
of art and design enhancements
at the Robert B. Green Campus,
and more than 1,200 at University Hospital, that were collected
over the course of three years
for University Health System’s
Salud-Arte: Art of Healing program.
The goal of that program is
to use art to inspire healing and
hope, and to provide patients,
visitors and staff with a warm
and welcoming environment.
The program is led by San Antonio art curator Allison Hays,
owner of the Olana Group. Hays
worked closely with the project’s
Design Enhancement Public Art
Committee to assemble the art
collection at both facilities.
The murals, “Three Hispanic Ladies” and “Three Musicians,” were painted using oil wash on canvas
by. They each measure six feet long and about four feet wide. Mrs. Aubrey Keating Carter said her

de vagones europeos en Estados
Unidos.
Pero Volkswagen descifró el
código wagón para los estadouni­
denses desde hace un tiempo.
Primero fue el popular Passat
wagon, luego una variación del
Jetta, y ahora el nuevo Golf
SportWagen.
Basado en la nueva plataforma
del Golf, el SportWagen es más
grande, más ligero y más eficiente

Medication safety and Alzheimer’s disease

Individuals with Alzheimer’s
disease may take medications to
help ease the symptoms of the
disease and to address depression,
sleeplessness, anxiety or other
behaviors that are disruptive.
A person with Alzheimer’s or
other dementia may be prescribed
multiple medications, and may
take medications for other conditions as well. Medications are
powerful. Care needs to be taken,
especially when more than one
medication is being used. Use
these safety tips to help avoid
medication-related problems.
Working with the doctor and
pharmacist
Coordinate with all care
providers.
A person with Alzheimer’s may
be under the care of more than one
doctor. Make sure all health care
team members know about any
prescription and over-the-counter
medications, including herbal or
vitamin supplements. Each time
you go to an appointment, take
a list of current medications and
dosages.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist to check for possible drug
interactions.
When a new medication is
prescribed, ask whether it is
okay to take it with other current
medications. Also, remind the
health care team of any allergies
to medications or side effects that
have occurred in the past.
Get details.
Find out as much as possible
about every medication, including
name, purpose, dosage, frequency
and possible side effects. If troubling side effects occur, report
them to the doctor.
Take as directed.
Do not ever change dosages
without first consulting the doctor
who prescribed the medication. If
cost or side effects are an issue,
tell the doctor. There may be other
solutions.
If swallowing is a problem,
ask if the medication is available in another form.
A liquid version may be available, or in some cases medications can be crushed and mixed
with food. However, no pill or
tablet should be crushed without
first consulting your physician
or pharmacist. Crushing some
medications may cause them to
be ineffective or unsafe.
Maintain medication records.
Keep a written record of all
current medications, including the
name, dosage and starting date.
Consider signing up for an online
personal health record — where
information can be accessed at
any time — or carry a medication
list with you in your wallet or
purse. This record will be invaluable in the event of a serious drug
interaction or overdose.
Giving medication to someone with alzheimer’s
In the early stages of Alzheimer’s, the person with dementia
may need help remembering to
take medications. As a caregiver,
you may find it helpful to:
Use a pill box organizer.
Using a pill box or keeping
a daily list or calendar can help
ensure medication is taken as
prescribed.
Develop a routine for giving
the medication.
Ask the pharmacist if medications should be taken at a certain
time of day or with our without
food. Then create a daily ritual.
This might involve taking medi-
cations with breakfast or right
before bed.
As the disease progresses,
you’ll need to provide a greater
level of care. In addition to using
a pill box organizer and keeping a
daily routine, try these tips:
Use simple language and
clear instructions.
For example, say “Here’s the
pill for your high blood pressure.
Put it in your mouth and drink
some water.”
If the person refuses to take
the medication, stop and try
again later.
If swallowing is a problem,
ask if the medication is available in another form.
Talk to the doctor who prescribed the medication or the
pharmacist to find out if a liquid
version is available or if it is safe
to crush the medication and mix it
with food. Be aware that no pill or
tablet should be crushed without
first consulting your physician
or pharmacist, since it can cause
some medications to be ineffective or unsafe.
Make changes for safety.
Be sure to place medications
in a locked drawer or cabinet to
avoid accidental overdose, and
throw out medications that are
no longer being used or that have

with a bang! We are so excited
for all the amazing programs
and events we have scheduled
for our families as we continue
to promote inclusion and awareness for children and adults with
Down syndrome and other special needs.
The Down Syndrome Association is proud to present two new
amazing programs this year! The
first one is a Book Club designed
especially for teens and adults
with special needs! We are read-
ing Aesop’s Fables and loving
it! Every Friday evening at 5:00
p.m. our Book Club meets at the
Down Syndrome Association
office located at 2800 NW Loop

If you know of anyone that
could benefit from this fantastic
club that promotes reading and

a book and the stories on a CD so
anyone can participate regardless
of their level of reading skills.
The second program we are having a blast with is the UP! Club.

Madness, but
it’s still crazy

New month, new team for the
Spurs as they appear to have
gained a spark to winning and
showing former dominance. Maybe they needed a horrible month
like their Rodeo Road Trip to
to wake the Spurs up or maybe
even a simple mind change of
confidence.
Whatever the case may be, the
Spurs are looking like a fierce contender in the Western conference.
They are currently in the sixth
position in the conference. The
best possible position in the playoff we can achieve is the fourth
seed. The teams in the Western
Conference have been phenomenal. The best shot for the Spurs
to go for in the playoffs might
actually be the sixth seed.
With the sixth seed, teams in the
past have generally felt less pressure compared to other spots in
the playoff bracket. The first and
second seeds have the most pressure because they are expected
to win slightly more than the last
two seeds.
For the Spurs, the situation is a
little different. With their reputation, the Spurs cannot hide and
waltz through the play. They are
still considered a very dangerous
team considering their current
standing in the conference. The
Spurs have found ways to win
in the postseason better than any
other organization, which is a fearful fact for other organizations in
the NBA.
For the team, it is very evident
as to how are the Spurs suddenly
are playing better. One man, well
two actually, Kawhi Leonard and
Tony Parker. They are the adrenaline of the team, once they get going, the Spurs become dangerous
and strong.
Over the course of their current
string of wins, Parker and Leonard
have both averaged over 15 points
per game, 10 rebounds, and five
assists. They have been filling in
the stat sheet making their presence know in the stat sheet.
For the fans, they are just happy
that the Spurs they know and love
are back to looking like the team
they’ve been the last decade,
dominant. Time will tell if this is
just a spark or of it is or permanent dominance that’ll continue
through to the playoffs.

Spurs comfortable at home, win sixth straight

A road-trip is a desired escape
– a welcome reprieve from the
endless doldrums of responsibility
and the perpetual repetitions of the
work place.
Its an opportunity to visit new
destinations and old, traveling
across zigzagging highways to
observe all that the American
landscape has to offer.
For the San Antonio Spurs, their
annual Rodeo Road Trip was a
nightmare expedition offering
very little pleasantries.
It was a trip in which debris on
the road punctures a tire, bathroom
rest-stops become nonexistent
when desperately needed and
teenage passengers blast music at
deafening volume on headphones
to avoid communication with a
driving parent.
It’s the trip that halfway
through, you desire the inviting
comforts of your bed, restless in
an unfamiliar setting as the groaning, protruding springs of a Motel
6 mattress digs into your spine.
Throughout the away journey,
“there’s no place like home”
seemed to be an appropriate mantra for the franchise.
San Antonio stumbled on a four
game slide against quality opponents, and went 4-5 throughout
the trip, posting their first losing
record since embarking on the
road trip in 2003.
The Spurs finished the away
games winning against lowly opponents, but missed the comforts
of the Alamo City, and have been
undefeated since returning to the
AT&T Center.
San Antonio extended their win
streak to six – their second largest of the season – beating the
Toronto Raptors on ‘Silver and
Black Give Back Night’ 117-107
on Tuesday night.
Kawhi Leonard displayed abilities to guarantee himself a max
deal over the offseason. He scored
24 points and nabbed 11 rebounds,
matching a career high with five

steals. It was his fifth straight
game scoring 20+ point. The
Spurs are 18-2 in games where
Leonard scores over 17 points.
Tony Parker contributed 23
points and nine assists, and no longer looked like a shell of himself.
The Raptors extended their losing streak to four, and have lost
nine of their last 10 games.
In the first half of the game,
Toronto looked as helpless as the
raptors flung around by the T. Rex
at the end of ‘Jurassic Park’.
Toronto’s defense left wide
open gaps for the surging San
Antonio offense to exploit. At
times, the passing seemed more
appropriate for Harlem Globe
Trotter exhibitions, with the Raptors clueless execution similar to
the hapless Washington Generals.
San Antonio lead at halftime
61-41 and extended their lead
to 26 points at the beginning
of the third quarter, benefited
by the seamless facilitation and
chemistry that was sorely missing
throughout the Rodeo Road Trip.
The second half was a different
story, and the Raptors developed
intelligence and began communicating to each other like the
dinosaurs in ‘Jurassic Park 3’.
Toronto feasted on the Spurs
defense in the second half, clawing their way back to within a 6
point deficit in the final quarter.
In the second half of the third,
and the first half of the fourth,
the Spurs looked exhausted, and
Toronto stalked their prey with
meticulous precision.
However, San Antonio held off
the late game surge.
Danny Green passed Sean Elliott as 4th on Spurs career all
time 3-point field goals, draining
5-for-6 from behind the arc for 19
points. Danny Green has banked
in 565-of-1349 3-point attempts,
over Elliott’s 563-of-1485 tally.
Tim Duncan, hampered by a left
knee ailment, played much better
than recent outings.
A game removed from making
0 field goals – his first in his career
– Duncan notched the first points
of regulation and finished with 12
points and 13 rebounds.
His shots were still flat – Father
Time interfering with his shooting
motion, each misfire the inevitable
reminder of his impending retirement at seasons end.
A scary moment happened at
the end of regulation when Tiago
Splitter toppled into Duncan,
forcing The Big Fundamental to
exit the game with 55.9 seconds
clutching his hyper extended
elbow.
Now that the team is finally
healthy and playing as a cohesive
unit, the team remains hopeful the
Duncan injury is nothing serious.

bring the opportunity for collectors and fans to buy, sell and

the H-E-B Big League Weekend
to be held on March 20 & 21 at
the Alamodome.
H-E-B Big League Weekend
is just days away and in addition
to the two games between Los
Angeles Dodgers and the Texas
Rangers, post-game concerts
featuring Casey Donahew Band
and Frankie J.
The Sports Collectibles Show
is back! Fans and collectors will
delight in the show, where dealers
from all over the Southwest will
buy and sell sports cards, autographs and memorabilia.
Located on the South End Club
of the Alamodome, the Sports
Collectibles Show starts when
the gates open each day (4 p.m.
Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday) and is
hosted by Sports Collectibles of
Houston. The show features free

Kent won the National League
Most Valuable Player award in
2000 with the San Francisco Giants, and is Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in home
runs among second basemen.
From 1997 to 2005, Kent drove
in over 90 runs each season. Kent
is a five-time All-Star and his 560
career doubles put him tied for
21st on the all-time doubles list.
On December 14, 2004, he
signed a $21 million contract for
three years with his hometown
Los Angeles Dodgers. Kent’s
2005, season was the best year
for a Dodger second baseman
since Jackie Robinson. After
the 2005 season Kent signed an
extension that would take him to
the 2008 season. Kent announced
his retirement from baseball on
January 22, 2009.
Sierra played over 20 seasons
of Major League Baseball. He
played for the Texas Rangers,
Oakland Athletics, New York
Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays,
Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins. Sierra
made his major league debut on
June 1, 1986 as an outfielder for
the Texas Rangers and hit a home
run in just his second MLB at bat
becoming the first Texas Rangers
player to accomplish this feat. In
1989, Sierra hit 29 home runs,
and led the league in RBIs (119),
slugging (.543), and extra bases
(78). He went on to have 3 years
with 100+ RBIs with the Rangers.
He is also a member of the Texas
Rangers Hall of Fame.

sión, todo lo he dejado a lo que
se me ha enseñado en la ofensiva
y defensiva; he trabajado duro
para merecer disfrutar del trabajo
que todos hacemos en equipo.
Los marcadores a nuestro favor
son prueba del buen trabajo que
hemos venido realizando en la
temporada. Ante el Wild estuve
enfocado a parar disparos de
los rivales, no tuve distracción
alguna, mis compañeros me
apoyaron anotando y gracias a
todos nuestros esfuerzos salimos
adelante en esta fecha tan especial para la comunidad militar”,
afirmó.
El alero derecho McFarland
también dio crédito a sus compañeros que lo apoyaron durante
sus disparos a la portería rival.
“Los goles cayeron justamente
cuando más se necesitaban. Puse
bastante velocidad en los momentos de ejecutar cada disparo a gol.
Nos pudimos acomodar sobre
la pista sin perder tiempo en las
ejecuciones ofensivas”, exhortó
McFarland.
Rampage tiene 16 partidos por
jugar en el resto del rol regular,
con diez partidos locales y seis de
visitante en las plazas de Barons,
Admirals, Wild, y Cedar Park

will finish off their preseason
play with an international friendly
against the Costa Rican U-23 national team at 7:30 p.m. on March
28th at Toyota Field.
The squad is composed of
players who will compete in the
Summer Olympic Games, and
are currently training for the 2016
Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The Scorpions will play the
Austin Aztex on Saturday in the
inaugural Hill Country Derby
at home, and kick of the NASL
Spring Season on April 4 against
the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Este domingo el estadio Arthur
Bain Baseball Diamond, ubicado
en el complejo deportivo Rusty
Lyons (500 Basse Road-McCullough Avenue), estará vistiendo sus mejores galas cuando se
cante el tradicional “Playball” en
lo que será el segundo torneo de
la Liga Dominical Potranco que
es coordinada por el beisbolista
Juan Sánchez.
La primera bola será lanzada
por los padrinos: el beisbolista
Jorge Calderón apodado “Shamu”
y el hombre de negocios Jesús
Carrera. Ambos serán reconocidos por sus aportes al rey de los
deportes.
Calderón hizo historia con el
club Rieleros con el que jugó
pelota blanda (Softball Slowpitch), así como en circuitos del
béisbol categoría veteranos.
El señor Carrera será homena-
jeado por sus aportes y patrocinios
que ha dado al béisbol regional.
La ceremonia de los primeros
lanzamientos está programada
para dar inicio antes de comenzar
el segundo partido de apertura
entre los equipos Westsiders y
Titanes, en el horario de la 1 p.m.
De acuerdo al coordinador
Sánchez, la justa del segundo
torneo la comenzarán a las 10 a.m.
los equipos Bravos y el actual
campeón Piratas de Sabinas, que
dirigieron exitosamente el timonel Sergio de Luna y el experto
lanzador derecho Francisco Cano,
quienes contaron con el gran respaldo del coordinador general del
club Daniel Guerrero.
Piratas disputó con éxito la
temporada dedicada a la memoria
del beisbolista coahuilense Ever
Gloria y de la softbolista Janelle
Cisneros.
Así Piratas se clasificó a la gran
final, la cual la disputó contra el
club Águilas de La Sauceda, que
fue comandado por el manager
y jugador Benito Martínez y el
coach Samuel Villarreal. Ambos entrenadores contaron con
el apoyo del propietario Héctor
Ibarra, quien los respaldó hasta
el último partido en la serie por el
banderín que les redituó el trofeo
de subcampeón.
Los Piratas se llevaron trofeos
de súper líder, campeón de torneo, y los trofeos individuales les
fueron entregados por Sánchez
al campo corto Bryant Guerrero,
que fue elegido como Novato del
Año y Jugador más Valioso, así
como al curvero lanzador derecho
Moisés Montalvo, que se ganó la
asignación como el Mejor Lanzador de la Serie.
“Estamos listos para lo que
sigue, que será la defensa de
nuestro campeonato. Piratas de
Sabinas va a estar bastante armando en el pitcheo que de
nueva cuenta será nuestra base en
búsqueda de triunfos”, expresó el
timonel De Luna.
El tercer partido se jugará en
el horario de las 4 p.m. Ahora
con el cambio de hora la luz
ambiental se extenderá hasta las
siete de la tarde lo que les dará
suficiente tiempo a los equipos
Rieleros y Diablos de finalizar
su justa deportiva en el tiempo
reglamentario.
A los integrantes de los equipos
Potranco de don Eloy Rocha y
Lobos les tocará ver las acciones
desde las gradas, ya que estarán
descansando.
“Por lo que se ve, el primer torneo fue todo un éxito deportivo.
Ello logró atraer la atención de
otros equipos que se quisieron
probar en este torneo categoría
abierta. El campeón Piratas tendrá el compromiso de volver a
ser el equipo a vencer durante los
partidos que se jueguen durante
el rol regular. A todos los directivos de equipos, sus jugadores,
familiares y seguidores les deseamos todo lo mejor, que haya
bastante disciplina deportiva”,
comentó Sánchez.

prayer, peace and reflection as
they celebrate National Day of
Prayer during the Annual Prayer
Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30
a.m. Thursday, May 7 at Trinity Baptist Church’s Tripoint

Doors open and breakfast served

This year’s honorable guests
are Mayor Ivy Taylor, Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller of the

Bethel. Each will share their
thoughts on the importance of
prayer, and address the theme of
“Stronger Through Prayer”. The

“Marqué y dañé la vida de mis hijos”

En este mensaje tratamos el
caso de un hombre que “descargó
su conciencia” en nuestro sitio
www.conciencia.net. Lo hizo de
manera anónima, como pedimos
que se haga; así que, a pesar de
que nunca se lo había contado
a nadie, nos autorizó a que lo
citáramos, como sigue:
“Me divorcié, marqué a mis
hijos, deshice once años de (matrimonio), y todo por egoísta....
Ahora ella me dice que los
abandoné y que destruí su vida
(aun cuando fue un divorcio por
mutuo consentimiento), y que
marqué y dañé la vida de mis
hijos....
“Me casé de nuevo dos años
después de mi divorcio. Ahora
tengo siete años de casado con un
hijo.... Pero llevo una culpa que
me aflige y me castiga todos los
días.... Ahora la comunicación
con mis hijos está muy distante.
No he sido el padre que debo ser
en ningún sentido. No me siento
bien. Todos los días me retumba
la culpa de muchas maneras...
pero no sé qué hacer...”.
Este es el consejo que le dio
mi esposa:
“Estimado amigo:
“Hay dos pasos que debe dar
a fin de librarse del sentido de
culpa: pedir perdón y hacer restitución. ¿Les ha pedido perdón a
sus hijos? ¿Le ha pedido perdón
a su exesposa? Hay que ser un
hombre valeroso para tener la
humildad necesaria para pedir
perdón. ¿Tiene usted suficiente
valor para hacerlo?
“A no ser que su exesposa
y sus hijos sean seguidores de
Cristo y comprendan el perdón,
es probable que no estén listos
para perdonarlo. Lamentablemente para ellos, el dolor que
sienten bien pudiera llevarlos a
desear hacerlo sufrir a usted y,
al negarse a perdonarlo, ellos
pudieran convencerse de que así
usted recibiría su merecido. No
hay modo de que sepan que usted
ya está sufriendo el tormento de
la culpa....
“Sin embargo, ya sea que ellos
lo perdonen o no lo perdonen,
a usted le corresponde pedirles
que lo hagan. Es posible que le
respondan con palabras hirientes
y con acusaciones que podrían
causarle mucha molestia. De
todos modos, el primer paso que
debe dar para librarse del sentido
de culpa es pedirles perdón.
“El segundo paso, la restitución, durará el resto de su
vida. No es algo que se hace una
sola vez; es un continuo cambio
de actitud y de conducta con
relación a aquellos a quienes ha
perjudicado....
“Hay un muro de separación
entre usted y sus hijos debido
al dolor emocional que ellos
sienten. Es a usted a quien le corresponde derrumbar ese muro al
interesarse en la vida que llevan,
asistir a las actividades y celebraciones en las que participan, y
comunicarse a menudo con ellos.
No importa si responden o no en
seguida de una manera positiva.
Si uno de ellos está participando
en un juego de béisbol, vaya a
ver el juego y anímelo desde las
graderías. Si hay una actividad
escolar, asista a ella. Si uno
de ellos tiene una necesidad
económica, ayúdelo conforme
a sus posibilidades. No deje de
hacer lo debido, y verá que tarde
o temprano ellos corresponderán
a sus atenciones....
“Dios no es como nosotros
en el sentido de que Él siempre
nos perdona cuando le pedimos
perdón. Él no guarda rencor ni
nos recuerda nuestro pasado.
Pero sí espera que cambiemos de
actitud y de comportamiento a fin
de no repetir ninguna conducta
destructiva”.

of the First Texas Missions

A ubiquitous Conference in
Rome is set advance the cause
of the beatification of Sor María
de Jesús de Ágreda. Scheduled
for late October 2015, this
event will be the culmination of
international activities planned
to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the death of the
Venerable Sor María, known
worldwide as the Lady in Blue.
Among the activities planned
to achieve those objectives, the
San Antonio Historical Association, the municipality of Ágreda,
Spain, St. Mary’s University and
Texas Before The Alamo project
will be presenting a “Sor María
de Jesús de Ágreda, the Lady in
Blue” summit in San Antonio on
Saturday, March 21. This will
include presentations by prominent historians, a 35 person
delegation from Spain led by
Jesús Alonso Jimenez, Mayor of
Ágreda and participation of 10
major historical organizations.
The focus of the summit is the
Texas-connection to Sor María
de Jesús and her bi-location
visits to its indigenous tribes.
Her travels to the Tejas natives and the subsequent devotion to her work by prominent
Franciscan friars led to the
founding of Texas and the establishment of its first Mission
in 1690.

cause of beatification is the
emphasis being given to the missionary work of Sor María to the
native tribes in East Texas from
a cloistered Convento in Ágreda, Spain. To this day, many
Native Americans in Texas and
New Mexico base their faith on
Sor María’s evangelical visits to
their tribal ancestors in the early
1600s. This includes the Tigua
of the Ysleta del Sur Mission
they built on tribal lands near
El Paso, and the Adai-Caddo of
the original Tejas Confederacy
in the region of East Texas. This
is where Mission San Francisco
de los Tejas was founded on
June 1, 1690 by General Alonso
de Leon and Fray Damian Massanet, devoted followers of the
writings of Sor María de Jesús
de Ágreda who the Tejas natives
called the Lady in Blue, because
of the blue cloak she wore.
The Conference in Rome,
Italy will be held October 29 -30
to present favorable studies and
advance the cause of Sor María
de Jesús beatification to Pope
Francis and the Vatican. The
Conference is being organized
by the Pontificia Accademia
Mariana Internazionale and will
answer doubts in defense of the
Immaculate Conception of Sor
María and her work contained
in the book “The Mystical City
of God”, writings that were
declared dogma by the Catholic Church in the nineteenth
century.

senior VP of marketing

Antonio is announcing the addition of Gail Ribalta as Senior
Vice President of Marketing to
its leadership team.
Ribalta leads marketing operations for Goodwill as a seasoned
senior marketing executive with
a successful track record in operating businesses in multiple
industries.

The beloved Dr. Seuss
would’ve turned 111 years old
on March 2 and to celebrate the
famed author’s legacy, Family
Service Association threw him a
belated birthday party this week.
Dozens of youngsters and their
parents crafted “Truffula Trees”,
“Thing 1 and Thing 2” hats,
noodle and oodles necklaces,
finger-paintings and took part in
many other activities inspired by
several Dr. Seuss books at The
Neighborhood Place, located at
3014 Rivas Street.
The celebration may seem like
it was all fun and games, but according to Margaret Belmares,
parent educator for Family Service Association, it was much
more than that.
“The event is to capture the
families and to give them the

municating and incorporating

A major proponent of community outreach, Ribalta has also
been instrumental in providing
support for a number of community organizations including
the Texas Diversity Council,
the Children’s Shelter, National
Association of Women Business Owners and Communities
in Schools.
She serves as an adjunct pro-

the reading tools for families.”
Each arts and crafts station had
a Dr. Seuss book that inspired the
featured activity. In turn, each
parent took turns reading the
book to his or her child.
“It’s very important for us
to promote literacy,” Belmares
added. “If they see how the kids
all of sudden are quiet and paying
attention, they realize that they
can really sit down at home and
do that.”
All of the stations required
bonding between families and
fostered education whether it was
through reading, learning colors
or counting.
“The parents did a lot of guiding and walking the kids through
the crafts, so it worked on their
communication skills,” Belmares
added. “They didn’t directly tell
them what to do, but they made
suggestions, so this way they can
learn how to guide their kids at
home with their homework.”
The event also stimulated creativity for the parents because
they were able to see the different activities they can have for
the kids.
“They can take the crafts
home, take them apart, and make
them again, or better yet, make
something different,” Belmares
added.
Additionally, children were
able to decorate 2-foot tall cardboard figures shaped like children for Child Safe’s Cardboard
Kids campaign.
Each cardboard cutout represents a child abused in Bexar
County last year and the campaign aims to create dialogue
child abuse and neglect.
Belmares noted that it was
important for Family Service
Association to join the campaign
because some of the families
involved in the association have
child protective services cases.
Family Services Association is
the oldest human service agency
in San Antonio and offers empowerment services for children,
youth, parents and seniors.

Micro-home project prepares local
students for construction trades

Bob Nelson watched as teams
of high school students hammered,
sawed and studied construction
plans to convert four shipping containers into micro-homes.
Part of Construction Careers
Academy at Warren High School,
the students are working on this
year’s project, to convert four
40x8x8-foot shipping containers
into four types of home, following
city code: an energy efficient home,
a home that meets ADA requirements, an outdoor living home and
a man cave.
As Nelson watched, seniors
working as construction managers
made sure their teams had the right
safety gear and equipment to complete tasks. Others climbed ladders
to hammer in some plywood siding.
Nelson, a CPS Energy engineering associate who helps customers
take advantage of commercial
rebates, spoke to the students recently, offering concrete building
and safety tips, but also emphasizing the need for future generations
to get hands-on training to fill jobs
that are in high demand.
“I’m glad to see a large group
like this interested in trades,” he
told the students. “There are a lot of
jobs right here in our community.”
“Programs like the Construction Careers Academy help our
community grow the best and
brightest in local talent,” said Lori
Johnson Leal, director of corporate
responsibility. “We want to see
students get the training and experience they need for good jobs
and successful careers here in San
Antonio. Programs like this provide
CPS Energy and other San Antonio
businesses a solid foundation for
future employees.”
According to Job2Careers, there
are thousands — encouraging news
to senior Dameon Buhl-Strubble,
who is working as an electrician
on the shipping container project.
“I didn’t know construction jobs
were this high in demand,” said
Buhl-Strubble. “It’s encouraging
to hear we need more engineers and
people in trades. I hope to benefit
the community someday with everything I’m learning here.”
Senior Roberto Muñiz, who plans
to pursue a trade at St. Philip’s College or Texas A&M San Antonio,
was also happy to hear Nelson talk
about the great job potential in our
community.
“It’s encouraging to know there
are a lot of jobs out there,” he said.
“I’m getting a lot of experience that
will help me to someday become a
construction manager or a diesel
mechanic.”
Nelson challenged the notion that
everyone is destined for college.
“Some students are better suited
for getting trained as an electrician,
plumber or carpenter,” he said. “Often these students end up going the
traditional route to college and end
up wasting time and money when
it doesn’t work out.”
He also assured students they
could do very well financially if
they choose a trade versus a college degree.
“In the long-term, electricians get
paid more than psychology majors
because they don’t have to spend
years paying off student loans.”
The average bachelor’s degree
in the U.S. costs students $127,000
while an average trade school degree costs $33,000, according to the

Professor Steve Gallets, who
oversees the program, invited Nelson to speak to the students.
Gallets said students are looking
forward to completing their microhomes so they can show them off
during the Parade Home this May.
Eventually, they’ll be sold at auction and money will go back to
funding the training programs.
While the homes will turn a
profit, the more valuable return on
investment will come when these
students fill important jobs in our
community.
“When students start looking
for jobs, they find out companies
are looking for people with experience,” said Gallets. “We are one
of the only high schools in the
U.S. that has extensive training
like this. What we’re trying to do
here is equip these students with
hands-on experience to learn these
trades so they can someday become
a plumber, electrician, engineer or
architect.”

Afghan vet to receive specially adapted
home from Homes for Our Troops

On Saturday, March 28,
2015,the national nonprofit
organization, Homes for Our
Troops(hfotusa.org) will kick
off the building of a home for
Chief Warrant Officer (CW4)
TaMarsh Thompson, who was
severely injured while serving in
Afghanistan. The Groundbreaking Ceremony signifies the start
of the build process of the home
and will introduce CW4 Thompson to the community. The event
will be held at 2115 Sage Run,
San Antonio, Texas at 11 a.m. and
the public is welcome to attend.

TaMarsh Thompson on March
22, 2012, sustained a severe
traumatic brain injury (TBI) when
his helicopter crashed in Camp
Mural, Afghanistan.
CW4 Thompson’s home, once
completed, will feature more
than 40 special adaptations such
as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and
kitchen amenities that include
pull-down shelving and lowered
countertops. The home will also
alleviate the mobility and safety
issues associated with a traditional home, including navigating
his wheelchair through narrow

hallways or over thresholds, riding on carpets, or reaching for
cabinets that are too high.
All costs for the home will
be covered by Homes for Our
Troops and its network of volunteers, supporters and corporate

Joseph gives back to Boys and Girls Club

The Eastside Boys & Girls
Club echoed with the sounds of
dribbling basketballs and chil­
dren’s laughter. Last Wednes­
day, smiling kids worked on
basketball fundamentals during
the Spurs Youth Basketball
League Clinic with San Anto­
nio Spurs staff and point guard
Corey Joseph.
The league is funded by Silver
& Black Give Back, and offers
young people the opportunity
to prosper through teamwork
and gives them an outlet that
promotes a safe environment.
“Sometimes I get to go to ap­
pearances and sign autographs
and take pictures,” Joseph said.
“But I don’t get to interact as
much as I did today. Today I
had a great time doing the drills
with the kids.”
This year, Silver & Black
Give Back celebrates its 25th
anniversary, and has helped
over 350,000 children and
coaches.
“Every game we go out there
and they cheer from wherever
they are,” Joseph said. “We
were once in their shoes. Just
loving the game and cheering
on our home team and loving
the players. They are an inspi­
ration to us. I know what they
are going through. So anytime I
have a chance to come out here
and maybe help them out, I try
and do that.”

Los Spurs honraron a Fuerzas Armadas y aficionados

El pentacampeón equipo Spurs
de San Antonio, como ha sido su
costumbre desde hace 42 años, se
volvió a llevar el reconocimiento
público gracias a que la geren­
cia general reconoció durante la
“Noche Militar USAA-Spurs” a
hombres y mujeres que se encuen­
tra prestando servicio militar en
las Fuerzas Armadas, veteranos y
quienes hicieron el último sacrifi­
cio en conflictos bélicos.
Este evento se realizó durante el
partido que Spurs sostuvo ante el
visitante Nuggets de Denver.
Durante el intermedio, ejecu­
tivos de USAA impusieron con­
decoraciones y la medalla Purple
Heart a: Sargento Pedro Solís,
Comandante Mayor y Sargento
Benjamín Ramos II, Sargento
Marlene Rodríguez, Sargento
Primera Clase Robert Nelson, PFC
William R. Holtgreven, Sargento
Mayor Howard T. Ray y Patriota
William H. Hovestadt.
Durante el partido que fue ga­
nado por la franquicia Silver &
Black con marcador de 120-111,
en el sistema de circuito cerrado
Gregg Popovich, entrenador en
jefe, egresado de la Academia
de la Fuerza Aérea, reconoció al
personal de las Fuerzas Armadas
des­tacando la gran responsabilidad
que hombres y mujeres ejercen en
resguardar la paz que se vive en
nuestra nación.
Entre las actividades destacó
la actuación de dos fans quienes
fueron invitados a probar el menú
empaquetado que se sirve entre
elementos de las Fuerzas Armadas
que son asignados a misiones es­
peciales. Ambos fueron vendados

Sustenio returns to Texas Roots

After a brief stint with Medi­
terranean food, celebrity chef
Stephan Pyles has launched a
new menu at Sustenio that cel­
ebrates modern Texas.
Despite the restaurant’s loca­
tion inside the Italian-inspired
Eilan Hotel, Pyles and Executive
Chef John Herdman have made
Sustenio one of the best places
to experience elevated, yet ac­
cessible Southwestern food.
Pyles, who was recently named a
semifinalist for the James Beard
Award for the best chef, is known
for cooking with his Southern
and Texas roots.
“I was raised in a truck stop
cafe in Big Spring, Texas,” Py­
les said. “This is not so far from
that and it’s very far at the same
time because there’s a modern
approach to this.”
Small plates like the ‘faux
gras,’ (Pyles’ chicken-liver ver­
sion of foie gras) are the perfect
dish for groups to start off their
meal. Spread on bread, the but­
tery richness of the pate pairs
well with the spicy sweetness of
the house’s jalapeno jelly.
If you’re still hungry for South­
western appetizers, opt for the
chicharrones dusted with chili
spice and served with pimento
cheese, or the “Hell’s Eggs,”
which are Pyles’ version of dev­
iled eggs, garnished with candied
bacon and jalapeno-flavored pop
rocks.
The menu is filled with afford­
able and delectable side items
like the mashed potato tots, a
fingerling potato salad and streetstyle Mexican corn.
Larger items like the 72-hour
brisket, topped with a BBQsauce made from Rebecca Creek
Whiskey, have already become a
favorite with diners.
“We cure it for 12 hours in a
mixture of chili, salt and some
other spices,” Herdman said.
“Then we smoke it for another
12 hours and then after that we
seal that and cook it for 72 hours.
This brisket’s been around the
block but it’s delicious, we call
it ‘life-changing brisket.’”
The brisket was impressive,
but it was the honey-fried chick­
en served with ‘Mabel’s biscuits’
that changed my life.
“The chicken is really the
highlight of our menu and that
is Stephan’s brain child, and just
an amazing dish,” Chef Herd­
man said.
Pyles takes care to marinate
the chicken in buttermilk before
slow-cooking it completely. He
then fries it in a traditional flour
and seasoned-salt mixture before
injecting the chicken with honey.
The result is perfectly crisp,
juicy chicken with a subtle honey
flavor.
The biscuits can be attributed
to Mabel Stanley, who was on
the cover of Pyles’ very first
cookbook and taught him how to
make the biscuits at age 13. Years
of practice and collaboration
have given the world incredible
biscuits with a flaky crust and a
fluffy interior.
If you have fond memories of
growing up in Texas, you’ll ap­
preciate the dessert menu. As an
individual who has never enjoyed
butterscotch anything before,
I was surprised by Chef Pyles’
butterscotch pudding with salted
caramel, served with a cactusshaped snickerdoodle cookie.
Be sure to also try the Snickers
ice cream and Dr. Pepper-float,
served with a warm brownie.
“It’s food that we like and we
love, not just in the Hill Country
but in all of Texas,” Pyles added.
“It’s good Southern and it’s good
Mexican influence here in Texas
cooking. We really feel like
we’re returning to our roots.”

150 años de un extraño viaje

en Austin tiene abierta la exhibición “Alice’s Adventures
in Wonderland” con motivo
de los 150 años de su primera
publicación.
Cuando el siglo XX aún era joven los críticos de libros decían que
“Alicia en el País de las Maravillas” era una historia deliciosa para
niños y décadas más tarde decían
que era “un verdadero cuento de
horror no recomendado para infantes”. ¿O sea, quién los entiende?
Y esta es tan solo una de las
tantas curiosidades que se encuentran en la exhibición
“Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland” que el Harry Ransom Center de la
Universidad de Texas
en Austin ha montado
con motivo de los 150
años de publicación
de este libro en 1865
por Charles Lutwidge
Dodgson, mejor conocido por su seudónimo
literario: Lewis Carroll.
La exhibición, de entrada gratuita y abierta
hasta el 6 de julio de este
año, es una experiencia
rica en detalles de cómo
este libro –que nació como
regalo para una niña de 10
años– ha trascendido por
siglo y medio a través de
la literatura, cine, música,
teatro y cultura popular en
más de cien idiomas.
Las editoriales se las ingenian para volver este libro aún más divertido.
Y para demostrar esto, el Harry
Ransom Center, despliega de su
colección particular ediciones
príncipe (inglesas y americanas)
del libro en mención, fotografías
de montajes teatrales, portadas

In Old San Antonio (NIOSA)
medal.
That’s what happened earlier
this week at the Steves Homestead and it’s not the first time
for the medal’s designer, Adriel
“Squeaky” McGill.
“Actually, Squeaky did our
poster back in 1991 when I was
the treasurer of NIOSA and I got
to know her very well and she
did lots of different things for us
in ‘91,” NIOSA Chairman Barb
Machado recalled for La Prensa.
The design is typical of what
she always did, according to
daughter Carolyn Hoelscher.
She described it as having all her
little people and the usual pretty
bright colors.
Hoelscher talked about her
mother’s sort of hobby and being
selected as the official NIOSA
artist was a special honor.
“It’s wonderful,” she said.
“What she did with paint, she did
because she just love sharing.
She gave away probably more
than she sold. Fortunately she
didn’t have to make a living at

Maybe it’s true about what
goes around, comes around.
When people take to the streets
next Saturday for the 19th Annual César Chávez March for
Justice, it’ll envelop a passion
that was parmount to Chávez
– feed those who can’t feed
themselves.
March Event Coordinator Gabriel Velasquez said the March
committee is partnering with the
San Antonio Food Bank to help
stock its shelves. He recalls how
Chávez worked to feed the country and help those who picked the
foods to place on the table.
“The people who can’t afford
to feed themselves or to feed
their families because things are
so tough out there economically;
the way that César Chávez fought
to make sure that the people were
picking the food could afford
to the food on the table themselves,” Velasquez explained.
He added they’ve incorporated
Chávez’s philosophy in to the
March and on that day they can
help put food on the table of
the less fortunate. Its a win-win
and the reality is that everything
about César Chávez is service.

“The overall goal is that everybody comes to the march brings
one can of food, Velasquez said.
“If we get 20,000 people we
can can collect 20,000 pounds
of food.”
The goa is get as much food as
possible and the best way to do
that, he said, would be to get everyone who comes to the march
to bring a can of food, thereby
helping the Fod Bank’s, Yes We
CAN campaign.
Ernest Martinez is the acting
chairman of the César Chávez
Legacy & Educational Foundation and proudly told La Prensa
that hosting the largest and
longest running César Chávez
March in the country honors and
pays tribute to the late labor and
civil rights leader.
Martinez is filling in for his father, Jaime Martinez, the founder
of the foundation. The elder
Martinez is hospitalized, but may
be released in time to take part
in the march.
Velasquez said people should
begin arriving Avenida Guadalupe Saturday morning by
8:30 for a blessing and worship
service.
The march led by Grand Marshal Little joe y La Familia
begins at 10 a. m. from Avenida
Guadalupe and head east on Guadalupe to Santa Rosa. West to
Flores then north to Commerce
and ending at the Alamo.

EFE - Director Joseph Kosinski will helm ‘Tron 3’, the third
installment of the saga produced
by Disney, The Hollywood Reporter revealed Thursday.
Kosinski, who jumped from
advertising to direct the previous
installment, ‘Tron: Legacy’ in
2010, was signed on again despite
its poor U.S. box office earnings
barely recovering an estimated
$170 million invested in what was
an expensive production.
However, the film was well received internationally and ended
its run earning more than $400
million.
Disney has not officially confirmed the shooting of ‘Tron 3’
but it is expected to go into production late 2015.
After ‘Tron: Legacy’ Kosinski
directed the futuristic ‘Oblivion’
starring Tom Cruise.

‘Cinderella’ remake an adequate fit

Disney follows the philosophy of “If it ain’t broke, don’t
fix it”. Currently, they follow a
simple formula that equates to
box-office gold – remake classic
animated features into live action
affairs with Oscar-caliber talent.
The results have been a mixed
bag.
Angelina Jolie shined in ‘Maleficent’, while Johnny Depp was
the only aspect of the candy-coated ‘Alice in Wonderland’ that
saved viewers from a mouthful
of cavities.
‘Cinderella’ takes little chances and follows closely with the
original animated classic.
After both parents take ill and
pass, Ella (Lily James who is one
dimensional) is forced to live
with her stepmother, who denounces her as a ragged servant
girl and banishes her to a room
in the attic.
Cate Blanchett oozes charisma
and malice as Lady Tremaine,
the stepmother sneering to mask
the deep pains of husbands’ loss.
‘Cinderella’ is an embodiment
of female empowerment, despite
the main character being a beautiful girl who has a tendency to
talk to animals.
The plot points that follow are
all familiar.
Ella meets Prince Kit (Richard
Madden) in the woods, and they
engage in flirty verbal banter.
The Fairy Godmother (Helena
Bonham Carter, gorgeous and
ageless), is an eccentric mystic
surrounded by an assortment of
animals, appears and makes her
wishes come true.
After an invitation to the kingdom’s ball, Ella shows up in her
mother’s mended dress, billowing with blue ripples as the court
stares flabbergasted.
The sub-sequential “glass slipper” search follows and... you
get the idea.
Screenwriter Chris Weitz
doesn’t step outside the box with
the source material, but director
Kenneth Branagh makes the most
out of what he has to work with.
The film is pretty to look at,
like peering through the cylinder
of a kaleidoscope. The stunning
array of costumes is a triumph
by 10-time Oscar nominee, and
three-time winner Sandy Powell.
‘Cinderella’ accomplishes
what it sets out to do – paint
a lush canvas that has limited
depth, but provides the Disney
magic for young and old.

Frozen Fever infectious

The “Frozen” phenomenon is
described perfectly in the title
of this short film. Over a year
following its initial release, the
fifth highest grossing film of all
time continues to grip the world,
tunes from the film echoing addictive melodies in our collective
conscience.
Rarely is a Disney short more
important than the film that it
preludes.
“Frozen Fever” is the exception.
The short film follows Elsa’s
birthday preparation for Anna’s
birthday while suffering from a
cold.

around me in the audience. The
new characters are destined to
become best-selling plush toys
and are a welcome addition to the
inevitable sequel.
The gags are familiar – Olaf
is dyslexic and addicted to cake,
Hans has a multiple personality
disorder and communicates with
his reindeer Sven, and the scheming Kristoff is still being punished
for wronging the sisters.
The film is beautifully animat-
ed, and the loving bond between
Elsa and Anna displays a beating
heart that warms the frozen landscape. The cast of characters feel
so familiar now, that watching
them interact in a new story is as
delightful as hanging out with the
toys of the ‘Toy Story’ movies.
A new song is sung throughout
that parents will inevitably hear
being belted from a car seat, but
will be unable to resist humming
along with their child.

lo quiero, pero eso no es verdad.
Si así fuera yo no lo hubiera
esperado, me hubiera divorciado
de él. ¿No crees tú eso? Quiero que
todo lo que pasó antes y después se
me borre de la mente. Quiero salir

conquistar otra vez.

Benevolent Bonner brings back “Rock On
Foundation” event to Bud Light Courtyard

Is there an NBA out there
better than the Spurs? Well, it’s
been statistically proven that no,
there is not. As if we couldn’t
love our dear Spurs any
more, the team returns
the favor by showing
love to the San Antonio
Community.
Center –forward Matt
Bonner, aka “The Red
Mamba”, had originally
launched his and his
brother Luke’s organization “Rock On Foundation” as an official
SXSW showcase for
Sneakers and Speakers,
an event that he had created back in his home
state of New Hampshire, back in 2013 at
[then] Club Deville. At
the show, [then] Spurs
player/rapper Stephen
“5 Stak” Jackson performed alongside big
name musicians such as
Dallas Green from City
and Colour and Chuck
Inglish of the Cool Kids.
The showcase went
viral, thus making the
launch a huge success.
Fast forward to March
of 2014 when the Bonners decided to bring the
event back home to the
Bud Light Courtyard at
the AT&T Center and
had performers such as rapper
Mobb Deep, punk rockers the
So So Glos, indie rockers Tan
Vampires and blues rockers
STRNGRS.
“Our fans had a wicked good
time last year, so Spurs Rock
On Night is back by popular
demand,” said Matt Bonner in a
release. “We’re very grateful that
Spurs Sports & Entertainment is
supporting Rock On by helping to
Celtics, the Rock On Foundation will bring performances by
rappers Arrested Development
that will be headlining the event
as well as special guest HeaveN
Beatbox, indie rockers Dirty
Bangs, Joywave and the Snaz to
the Bud Light Courtyard as well
as a special appearance
by DJ Windows 98,
the alter ego of Arcade
Fire’s front man Win
Butler who will be a
special guest DJ for the
in-game arena.
This isn’t the first
time Butler and Bonner
team up together for
charity. Back in 2011,
“Rock the Court” was a
charity basketball event
that took place at the
University of Toronto
with celebrity musicians and NBA players.
Butler managed to beat
Bonner in a 3 point shot
competition.
The Rock On Foundation supports athletic,
artistic and scholastic
initiatives and works
to increase opportunities for those who are
passionate about said
initiatives and creates
opportunities to pursuit
their fortes.
Though not a musician himself, it’s nice
to know that Bonner appreciates other aspects
and openly incorporates
them for a good cause
build this exciting event and bring and it’s also quite refreshing to
it back to the AT&T Center.”
