Rare accident exposes little B.C. girl to
HIV during vaccination

lot of children, and
adults, for that matter,
are afraid of needles. But
a little B.C. girl’s flinch as
she was getting a routine
vaccination is proving
scarier than the shot itself.
The six-year-old was
getting a booster shot at
the Fort St. James health
unit in northern B.C. in
early October. The child’s
father told 250News she
flinched as the nurse
was giving the injection,

causing the needle to go
through the child’s skin
and into the nurse’s hand.
In drawing the needle
back, the nurse’s blood
mixed with the little girl’s
blood.
The father, who was
not identified, said he
subsequently learned the
nurse was undergoing
treatment
for
HIV,

The incident means
the child now must have

four drug gang members
involved in the kidnapping of
dozens of student teachers who
disappeared last month and are
feared massacred.
The announcement came as
local media reported that a mass
grave has been discovered in a
trash dump outside mountain
town of Cocula, near Iguala
in the southwestern state of
Guerrero, where 43 students
disappeared after they clashed
with police and masked men
on Sept 26. Mexico’s Attorney
General Jesus Murillo said the
four members of the Guerreros
Unidos gang had been involved
in the kidnapping of the students,
which has sparked nationwide
protests

undermined
President Enrique Pena Nieto’s

que atendió en Dallas (EEUU) a un
liberiano enfermo de ébola y contrajo el
virus, dejará hoy el hospital tras haber
superado la enfermedad hace varios días,
según informó el centro médico donde está
internada. El Hospital Emory de Atlanta,
donde la enfermera permanece ingresada
desde el pasado 15 de octubre, detalló
que Vinson recibirá hoy el alta médica y
comparecerá ante la prensa a su salida del
centro. Vinson salió del aislamiento y su
familia anunció que la joven, de 29 años,
había superado la enfermedad.
Vinson y otra enfermera, Nina Pham,
se contagiaron mientras atendían en
el Hospital Presbiteriano de Dallas al
liberiano Thomas Eric Duncan, quien
contrajo el ébola en su país natal sin él
saberlo y desarrolló después los síntomas
cuando ya estaba en EEUU. Duncan,
quien llegó en septiembre a EEUU para
casarse con su prometida, falleció el

l 4 de octubre se cumplieron 97 años
del natalicio de Violeta Parra, con tal
motivo la agrupación musical “Colectivo
97” de Edmonton y el grupo de bailes
folclóricos “Los Copihues” de Calgary,
pusieron en escena el sábado 25 en el
teatro de la biblioteca de esta ciudad, la
obra “Canto para una Semilla”.
Los encargados de introducir el
programa fueron Eduardo Ruy-Pérez
y Valeska Alvárez, en lo que sería el
inicio de una velada inolvidable para los
amantes de la cultura latinoamericana,
que se dieron cita para disfrutar de una
jornada preñada del canto, el baile, el
arte folclórico en sus multiples facetas,
que nos legó Violeta Parra.
El grupo Los Copihues, sorprendió
a los asistentes con una presentación
sobria (comparada con otras anteriores),
pero no por eso menos elocuente. El
colorido de los trajes que asemejaban
una bandera chilena, la destreza de
los bailarines, junto a la magnifiencia
folclórica de las canciones de Violeta
Parra, nos deleitaron con ritmos de
cueca, chapecao, vals, resfalosa .
Definitivamente “Los Copihues” se
han transformado en uno de los mejores
exponentes del folklore latinoamericano
en Calgary, vayan nuestras felicitaciones
a quienes nos deslumbraron esa noche

componiendo canciones y el relato
emocionado de quienes compartieron
con ella, otorgaron a la presentación
un aire más íntimo, conmovedor,
con trazos de lo que fuera la agitada
trayectoria de Violeta, con testimonios
de familiares, connotados exponentes
de nuestra cultura, como Nicanor, Lalo,
y Angel Parra, y de reconocidos artistas
de renombre internacional, como Silvio
Rodríguez, Mercedes Sosa, Edith Piaf,
entre otros.
Pero todavía faltaba el plato más
fuerte: “Canto para una Semilla”,
que el “Colectivo 97” de Edmonton,
-compuesto por: Bllyth Nuttall (bajo),
Diana Nuttall (violoncello), Yvonne Ve
ra.

Yvon has a varied background,
with extensive experience in politics
and education, graduating from the
University of Moncton with a Bachelor
and Masters of Education before
becoming a teacher, vice principal
and principal in New Brunswick. It
was from here that Yvon shifted gears
and changed careers by becoming the
Director of Community Relations for
the Office of Premier Bernard Lord
in New Brunswick. He then moved
into the role of Senior Advance for
the Prime Minister’s Office before
becoming the Deputy Chief of Staff
for Premier David Alward.

Luis Advis, conformó “Canto para una Semilla”, con
textos extraídos de décimas escritas por la propia Violeta
Parra, logrando describir las diferentes etapas de su palpitante
existencia. Partiendo por su dulce infancia, en medio de la
pobreza, en un ambiente rural, donde se templó el genio y
carácter de quien sería una de las más fieles exponentes del
folklore latinoamericano. En su paso por este mundo conoció
el amor y el desengaño, alegrías y tristezas, pero por sobre
todo primó su amor a la gente, al pueblo, a quienes entregó
toda su inspiración, su canto, su arte, y su vida.

El ladrón y su víctima coinciden

EIJING, 27 de octubre.- Un hombre víctima de
robo de su tarjeta de crédito en China acudió al
banco a cancelarla, cuando otro hombre, haciéndose
pasar por él, intentaba sacar dinero de ella, informa el
diario británico The Independent.
En una extraña y única coincidencia, Wen Sun fue a
la misma sucursal bancaria que la víctima, Feng Wan,
mientras ésta tramitaba la cancelación de su tarjeta de
crédito luego que le fuera robada.
Al mismo tiempo Wen Sun trataba de sacar 400
euros de la cuenta con la misma cajera y con Feng Wan
a su lado.
La trabajadora del banco aseguró que el ladrón quería
retirar 10 mil yuanes, pero que no pudo comprobar su
identidad. En dos ocasiones la cajera le pidió teclear su
número secreto y falló, fue ahí cuando se dio cuenta de
que él era el farsante.
Sun fue arrestado en el banco, no sin antes haber
sido golpeado por el verdadero Feng Wan.

high school pupil Worapot
doesn’t have time to waste
matching up to a militaryled government’s idea of
what makes a good Thai.
The generals who
led a coup in May have
prioritized school reforms
to inculcate a strong sense
of national identity - or
Thai-ness - in a country
whose traditional values
hinge on unquestioning
respect for the monarchy,
religion and elders.
For Worapot, the son
of junior civil servants
who together earn $1,800
a month, a more practical
goal would be creating
an education system that
commands respect in the
job market.
“Now the system might
get even worse,” said
Worapot, as he sat on the
steps of a language school
in a bustling Bangkok
shopping district where
he is taking extra lessons
in English.
Still to lift martial
law, the junta has given
education the biggest
slice of the 2015 budget,
raising teachers’ pay and
redrawing the national
curriculum with the aim
to introduce it at the start
of the next school year in
May. Aside from giving
Thai history and culture
more emphasis, classes
in “moral soundness
and virtues” will be
introduced.
Worapot’s frustration
with the new policies is
magnified by the prospect
that the job market will
become tougher once a
trade pact, due to start
next year, brings together
600 million people in
Southeast Asia.
He wants to be able
to compete with betteroff Singaporeans and
Malaysians rather than
be patronized for quaint
moral codes or nationalist
sentiments.
“I want to be their
equal or better. Not to be
ridiculed,” he said, while
using a Thai-to-English
application on his iPad.
For years, education
in Thailand has been
handicapped by a reliance
on rote-learning and stress

The military mobilized

continued to fall in the
island nation’s central
hills. Mud covered some
of the destroyed homes
to their roofs, and water
gushing down hillsides
indicated more slides
were possible.
P. Arumugam, who
works as a driver on the
plantation, said he rushed
there when he heard about
the mudslide.
“Everything that I saw
yesterday I could not see
today — buildings, the
temple and shops had all
disappeared. I could only
see mud everywhere,” he
said.
The mudslide struck
at around 7:30 a.m. and
wiped out 120 workers’
homes at the Koslanda tea
plantation, said Lal Sarath
Kumara, an official from
the Disaster Management
Center. The plantation is
in the town of Koslanda in
Badulla district about 220
kilometres (140 miles)
east of Colombo.
