Rocks. . . aving explored the disciplines of prayer and fasting, it is time to examine that to almsgiving. Recall that prayer is the rising of the mind and heart toward God and fasting concerns the curbing of the desires. Alms giving concerns how we love. Almsgiving is related to mercy, which flows from charity (that is love). Any deed done on behalf of the someone in need that is motivated by a love for them, flowing form a love of God, is an act of almsgiving. Almsgiving can be of two general types, material or spiritual. When we think of giving alms we generally think of giving money, particularly to the poor. This is a an example of almsgiving which is material. Other examples would be visiting the sick, giving drink to the thirsty, feeding the hungry, ransoming the captive, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless and burying the dead. Giving money can help accomplish many of these works. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that to "assist a man against any distress that is due to an extrinsic cause comes to the same as the ransom the captives"; meaning that when we assist a mother carrying a baby by holding the door for her it is similar to ransoming someone captive. By burying the dead we show respect to a person's memory as well as to the human body which has become the temple of God through baptism. The spiritual alms we give consist of teaching, counseling, correction, consolation, forgiveness, patience and prayer. By teaching, counsel and correction we enlightening people concerning what is true and good. Such almsgiving keeps them from sinning. By giving consolation and forgiveness we help to lift peoples spirits, giving them joy and hope. By patience we can help a person to experience peace by our kindness toward them. To pray for people is to ask God to bless people with all they need to live a good and holy life. All of these refer to the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Ultimately these works are motivated by the charity which comes from our union with the Holy Spirit. This is the charity (love) of which St. Paul writes: "If I give away everything I own, if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love (charity), I gain nothing" (1 Cor 13:3). This love, of which St. Paul speaks, stirs us to be attentive to the needs of others, leading us to give alms. The Gospel law is one of love: Love God above all things and love your neighbor as you love yourself. This love must go beyond just wishing good for others; it must actually do good for others. Almsgiving is doing good for others. By alms-giving we share in the love of God by loving others as God loves them. Let then with St. Paul strive for the greatest spiritual gift (1 Cor 12:31), charity (love), so as to love as God loves. "Pray and pray much; it is in prayer that you will find the greatest strength." Saint Just de Bretenières 3-636 Stewardship Reflection Stewards Love God “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” (Exodus 20:4a) S F “Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace.” irst Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 Through Moses, God passed on the commandments he wished all people to follow. He tells us not to worship idols or take the name of the Lord in vain. All the laws God gave to us, if followed, would ensure that we could live in peace and harmony with one another as he had planned. S econd Reading: I Corinthians 1:22-25 Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power and the wisdom of God. Although they claimed to possess wisdom, “God’s folly is wiser than men, and his weakness is more powerful than men.” G ospel: John 2:13-25 Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find merchants there selling sheep and doves. He knocked over their tables and drove the animals away. The merchants asked him for a sign that he was authorized to do this. He told them to “destroy this temple (referring to his body) and in three days I will raise it up.” The merchants misunderstood, and did not believe he could rebuild in three days what had taken nearly 50 years to build. Still many believed in him, after seeing the miracles he had performed. tewards do not create idols. Have you created idols for yourself in different shapes? An idol can be in the shape of money, sports, fashion, travel, or anything else we value more than God and His Word to us.
