GOD’S WORD TODAY
Today we listen to two stories that take place on
mountaintops. In the first we hear the story of how
Abraham was put to the test. He is referred to as
“our father in faith” precisely because he was willing
to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, because the Lord
God had commanded it. When Abraham stands
ready kill Isaac, the Lord God intervenes, prevents
the sacrifice, and blesses Abraham in abundance. In
the second story, the only Son of God is transfigured
on a mountaintop before the eyes of Peter, James,
and John. As the sacred word is proclaimed, let us
ask God to strengthen our own faith and lead us one
day to share in the transfigured glory of Christ.
Here are a few ideas to consider for your
Lenten activities:
• Spend at least 10 minutes per day reading and praying
with the Scriptures. Start with the Gospels and read two
chapters each day.
a prueba.
además bendice abundantemente a Abraham.
May our Lenten activities help us to emerge at Easter as a
renewed people!
Escrituras.

Society. Donations are great, but personal involvement
is even more valuable.

• Give up something you won’t take back after Lent is
over. Then devote the time, energy, and money you save
to something life-giving.
• Pick one trait or habit that gets in the way of your
relationships with your spouse, children, friends, and/
or with God...and work on it!
• Fast from criticism, negativity, and gossip. Fast from
apathy and procrastination.
• If there is a feud in your family, write a note and
attempt to heal the division.
• Change how you spend your time: spend less time with
TV or the internet and more time with your spouse &
family. Increase your involvement with the parish and

Defending Marriage: Twelve Arguments for Sanity
New Book Available from Lending Library
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in
the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of
your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are,
in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Your almsgiving to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help
the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.
Anyone could use a little help, or someone to talk to, especially
during these tough economic times. If you would like more information about what we do, please leave us a message at 630236-1285.

In this brand new book, Anthony Esolen presents a
rousing, compelling defense of traditional, natural
marriage. He expertly uses moral, theological, and
cultural arguments to defend this holy and ancient
institution and illuminates the threats it faces from
modern revolutions in law, public policy and sexual
morality. He succinctly identifies the cultural
dangers of gay “marriage” and, far more important,
the Sexual Revolution which paved its way. He offers
a stirring defense of true marriage, the family, culture,
and love, and provides the compelling arguments that
will return us to sanity.

“La Cuaresma es un tiempo apropiado para la abnegación;

~Papa Francisco~

Message from Pope Francis for Lent
“Make your hearts firm” (Jas 5:8)
Message from Pope Francis for Lent
“Make your hearts firm” (Jas 5:8)
Through prayer, charity and humility before God, people
receive a heart "which is firm and merciful, attentive and
generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey
to the globalization of indifference".
Through prayer, charity and humility before God, people
receive a heart "which is firm and merciful, attentive and
generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to
the globalization of indifference".
3 of 3 Three biblical reflection texts.
“Make your hearts firm!” (James 5:8) – Individual Christians
As individuals too, we have are tempted by indifference.
Flooded with news reports and troubling images of human
suffering, we often feel our complete inability to help.
What can we do to avoid being caught up in this spiral of
distress and powerlessness?
First, we can pray in communion with the Church on earth
and in heaven. Let us not underestimate the power of so
many voices united in prayer! The 24 Hours for the Lord
initiative, which I hope will be observed on 13-14 March
throughout the Church, also at the diocesan level,
is meant to be a sign of this need for prayer.
Second, we can help by acts of charity, reaching out to
both those near and far through the Church’s many charitable organizations. Lent is a favourable time for showing
this concern for others by small yet concrete signs of our
belonging to the one human family.
Third, the suffering of others is a call to conversion, since
their need reminds me of the uncertainty of my own life
and my dependence on God and my brothers and sisters.
If we humbly implore God’s grace and accept our own limitations, we will trust in the infinite possibilities which
God’s love holds out to us. We will also be able to resist
the diabolical temptation of thinking that by our own efforts we can save the world and ourselves.
As a way of overcoming indifference and our pretensions
to self-sufficiency, I would invite everyone to live this Lent
as an opportunity for engaging in what Benedict XVI
called a formation of the heart (cf. Deus Caritas Est, 31). A
merciful heart does not mean a weak heart. Anyone who
wishes to be merciful must have a strong and steadfast
heart, closed to the tempter but open to God. A heart
which lets itself be pierced by the Spirit so as to bring love
along the roads that lead to our brothers and sisters. And,
ultimately, a poor heart, one which realizes its own poverty and gives itself freely for others.
During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask
the Lord: “Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum”: Make
our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus).
In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed,
indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.
It is my prayerful hope that this Lent will prove spiritually
fruitful for each believer and every ecclesial community. I
ask all of you to pray for me. May the Lord bless you and
Our Lady keep you.
Pope Francis
3 of 3 Three biblical reflection texts.
Papa Francisco
