Before the show started, Paul, 8, was at the piano, warming up the crowd. “There’s something sounding nice there,” Eliot, right, plays with tenor saxophonist Sedric Shukroon (left). said Marjorie Eliot, who was busy in the kitchen arranging snacks for her guests. She told the musicians that at 4:20 they’d have to take a break then. She was receiving an award from the National Conference of Artists (NCA). “I have said ‘No,’ and they have said, ‘It’s going to happen.’” she said. “I don’t do it for that and I never thought that that would be happening when I started doing this.” Eliot started doing “this” in 1992 after her son Phil, 32, died on a Sunday of kidney problems. Every Sunday thereafter, including this past Sun., Mar. 1st, Eliot has filled her home with music and opened her doors to anyone who wanted to listen. The Parlor Jazz Sundays continued even after another son, Michael, 47, passed away from meningitis in 2006. “The last time I counted it was more than 600 Sundays,” said her son, Rudel Drears. “The math is crazy.” Eliot has lived at the Triple Nickel for more than 30 years. The building has been home to many other music legends including Count Basie, Lena Horne, Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges and Paul Robeson. “Dije no”, y respondieron: “Esto va a suceder”, explicó. Eliot, junto con el saxofonista Vea MELODIA p23 “You’re my family,” said jazz maven Marjorie Eliot. Outside on Sunday, snow was falling. Inside, the jazz was hot. Eliot, along with tenor saxophonist Sedric Shukroon and trumpeter Koichi Yoshihara, started off the first set with “Precious Lord.“ Later, Drears traded places with his mother at the piano. People sat in the parlor, the kitchen and lined the hallway, nodding their heads and tapping their feet to bebob jazz standards of the 50’s and 60’s. Onan Smith sat in the front row. He came all the way from Queens. “It’s not just the music. It’s the ambience. It’s a very friendly environment, very intimate,” he said. “You have much more of a connection with the music and the players.” See MELODY p23 THIS WAY FOR THE 2015 Purim Festival Bring your entire family and take part in the festivities at the Y’s premier annual event! For the past quarter-century, the Latino College Expo has helped local high school students prepare for a college education, allowing them to network with recruiting schools and educating them on the application process. More than 1,000 attendees are expected at the expo’s silver anniversary, to be held on Sat., Mar. 14th on New York University’s campus. Founder and Director Antonio Aponte said that Latino students, especially those from low-income families, sometimes feel like college is unattainable for them. “We want all of these kids to know that they can achieve,” stated Aponte. “That’s why we inform them and their families on how to deal with the entire college application process, including financial aid and scholarships.” “If we could get all of you into college, it would really be a transformation of this city,” remarked Dr. Pedro Noguera, Professor of Education at New York University and Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and Transformation of Schools, to attendees during last year’s expo. This year’s event kicks off with a Leadership Summit “We want kids to empower themselves,” says Expo Founder and Director Antonio Aponte. comprised of workshops for teens and parents on navigating the college application process, handling the stresses of college life, standardized testing, financial aid, collegiate sports and other topics. Participants will learn how to tap into statefunded programs that help economically challenged students pay for college. According to Aponte, these programs are equivalent to “free money” for students, but many are unaware of their availability. “Each year, there are millions of dollars in funds that go unclaimed by prospective students,” he said. New workshops for 2015 include an athletic scholarship session as well as a seminar for arts students on creating portfolios and handling auditions. The Latino College Expo also allows teens to meet with representatives of more than 75 colleges and universities. While most are from the New York City area, there will be schools from elsewhere in the country, such as Penn State University, University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University. The expo is free to all attendees, with advance registration required to attend the workshops. Aponte said he first created the expo 25 years ago because he observed a lack of resources to help Latino students access a college education. “And I saw that parents were not involved enough in helping get their kids into college,” said Aponte. “I felt there was a lack of information available to Latino parents, so the expo was meant to provide that all in one place,” he explained. Since then, producing the expo has become a labor of love for Aponte, who expressed surprise at how popular the event has become. The last few years, the expo has drawn an average of 1,300 attendees. Among some of their discoveries was that, in one recent study, 43% of seniors reported feeling lonely on a regular basis. That sparked their imaginations. The teens came up with a special project aimed at making the lives of residents at the Y’s Wien House, a residential facility for low-income seniors, a little brighter and sweeter. The group spent an evening baking cookies for the seniors. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 generally starts during childhood or early adulthood and occurs in 5 to 10 percent of the population. Insulin treatments, a controlled diet and exercise are required. Type 2 diabetes usually develops later in life. According to Beane, residents of Northern Manhattan community face a challenging combination of factors responsible for the high incidence of the disease. These include inadequate access to affordable, healthful foods; lack of enough physical activity; and limited access to healthcare resources. “All chronic illnesses are impacted by socio-economic factors,” said Beane, stressing the importance of an early diagnosis in order to control what she called “an epidemic.” “Diabetes is spreading and now affects younger adults,” explained Beane, adding that Type 2 Diabetes used to be a condition that was more prevalent in older adults. Alarmingly, the incidence of Type 2 diabetes has increased among children across the United States in past decades, including very young children. “The incidence is higher in children born after the year 2000,” explained Selma Betancourt, Healthfirst’s Director of Community Relations. Rangel kicked off the 30-day Rangel Resolution at the Healthy Food Hub in West Harlem this past Mon., Mar. 2nd. The initiative, to which all community members are invited to join through the month of March, consists of making three sustainable dietary changes. They are: 1. Replace all sugary beverages with water; 2. Eat breakfast every day; and 3. Eat at least one additional serving of fruits and vegetables a day Joining in the announcement on Monday were Donald Notice, Executive Director of West Harlem Group Assistance; Colleen Flynn, Green and Healthy Neighborhood E Director at LISC NYC; and Dennis Derryck, Founder and President of Corbin Hill Food Project. “I hope to encourage people to make small changes in their diet that can lead to big improvements in their health,” said Rangel, who noted that he frequently makes his own smoothie between meetings. Consuming one can of soda a day increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 22% and can result in gaining almost 15 pounds in one year. Studies have shown that eating breakfast increases energy throughout the day and fights off the midmorning slump. For children, eating breakfast can boost performance in school and improve their diet. And according to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce risks for diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. The initiative also seeks to raise awareness of food inequality. Many local residents remain without access to nutritious, affordable food and therefore may find it difficult to adopt habits that can prevent common diseases. Food Congressman Charles Rangel takes the pledge. inequality can come in a variety of forms: it can mean that a community does not have a supermarket that provides fresh produce, or it can mean that fresh produce already available is simply too expensive. By Nancy Bruning, Fitness Specialist A lthough extreme cold can bring health hazards such as frostbite, seasonal affective disorder, and respiratory infections – not to mention our constant complaints – the frigid weather also has its health benefits. It’s a Calorie-Burner Being cold can cause your body to burn more calories. We all have brown fat, which is metabolically active (it burns calories), and white fat, which is less so. The cold seems to cause more brown fat to form, and also triggers the brown fat into burning more white fat calories. Even short periods, say, during a walk or run in the cold, can increase the calories burned during exercise. So, outdoor workouts might help you slim down—every little helps, right? It Kills Bugs When the temperature drops below freezing, it can kill off mosquitoes and ticks— carriers of West Nile and other diseases spread by these critters. Fleas, too. It Can Reduce Inflammation and Pain You’ve probably used ice on an injury. Well, cold can work its magic on your whole body. Whole-body cryotherapy is used in Japan to Smile. reduce pain and inflammation from rheumatic disease and other conditions. Finnish studies have shown that cold water plunges increased a chemical in the blood that suppresses pain. It Boosts Brain Power Cooler temperatures help your brain work better. So think about your indoor temperatures, too, for working or studying. 62 degrees seems optimum for optimum brain function. It Improves Sleep Your body temperature drops naturally during sleep. The ideal temperature for sleeping is between 65 and 72 degrees (some people like it even cooler). Room temperature affects the quality of REM (rapid eye movement) the stage during which you dream. Sleep experts recommend you think of your bedroom as a cave—cool, quiet, and dark. It Might Help You Live Longer Sure, the experiments have only been done with mice and worms, but cold has been shown to trigger responses that could extend their longevity. And, as we all know, mussels in waters off the coast of Spain live on average 29 years, but those in frigid Russian waters live up to 200 years. It Makes You Appreciate Warmer Seasons When you have warm sunny weather every day, you start taking it for granted. Bearing the brunt of winter’s darkness and cold heightens your appreciation of the other seasons. It can be good for our interpersonal relationships, too—we tend to focus on them more than in warm weather. Snuggle up! Did You Know? • Tall people tend to feel the cold worse than shorter people because of their larger surface area, which loses more heat. • Shivering actually helps you stay warm by creating internal heat through muscle contractions. • It takes several weeks for your body to adapt to cold weather; we adapt to warmer weather more easily. It seems a little bit of exposure to cold may be a good thing for your health. If you’re generally healthy and moderately active, it can even give your health a boost. Start with a brisk walk outdoors, and see where it might lead. According to Liz Webb, Director of Credentialing and Operations at Corinthian Medical IPA, a physician’s group headed by local practitioner Dr. Ramon Tallaj, awareness is key to ensuring basic tenets of wellness. “We want to increase the quality of care,” she said. “[We want to] decrease the admissions to emergency rooms.” And some ethnic groups are more impacted by the disease than others. American Diabetes Association of Greater New York Executive Director Kevin Shippy said that the disease disproportionately affects Hispanics, African Americans and South East Asians. “Genetics load the chamber, but lifestyle pulls the trigger,” he said. Some of the symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination, increased thirst, hunger, fatigue and dizziness. In order to avoid developing diabetes, or 22 “The incidence is higher in children born after the year 2000,” explained Selma Betancourt. to manage the disease, Shippy recommended reducing the amount of sugar ingested, exercising regularly and consuming a plantbased diet, as obesity – besides genetics – is one leading cause of diabetes. Shippy suggested requesting a test for diabetes (A1C glucose test) as part of every annual physical examination, as sometimes symptoms can go undetected for a long time. If current trends persist, it is expected that 1 in 3 adults will be diagnosed with diabetes. It is why Expo organizers say they are again emphasizing preventive measures and management processes. “29 million people in the United States have diabetes,” said Shippy. “80 million are on the cusp of developing diabetes, [and] two thirds of [them] are unaware.” The Expo will be held on Sat., Mar. 14th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in the North Wing For more information, please visit http://bit. ly/1brlNaA. la conciencia es crucial. It’s very special.” Wilhelmina Obatola Grant, Vice President of the National Conference of Artists New York, said that NCA honors people who exemplify the arts. She presented Eliot with a painting by artist Sophia Dawson of herself with her siblings, entitled “Before They Were Stars.” “This is because of you,” Eliot told the audience. “I don’t know what I’ve done to really deserve this. That’s not false modesty— that’s from the heart. You are everything. You choose to come here and share the beauty of yourself with us. You’ve taken my children and me into your family—so you’re my family.” Drears said people from all over the world have come to the parlor to hear African American music. “We’ve done it every Sunday—even when it seemed like a struggle, we would do the show,” he said. Attendees often say that they may not be religious, but the Sunday jazz is even better than church. They feel a strong fellowship and connection with others in the room. “They’ll say, ‘That’s my favorite song,’ and we just happened to do it,” Drears said. “It is a give and take thing.” “For me,” he added, “it’s just being proud…proud of Mommie. She’s been the force behind all of these Sundays. Everybody who comes here comes for a good time.” tenor Sedric Shukroon y el trompetista Koichi Yoshihara, comenzó el primer set con “Precious Lord”.
