Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 Saint Paul teaches us that the wisdom of God is not easy to accept, in particular, the message of the crucified Christ. Gospel Reading: John 2:13-25 Page 2 The Gospel tells of Jesus cleansing the Temple in Jerusalem. The reflection question for this week is: Abraham was asked to sacrifice what was most dear to him – his beloved son. WHAT MIGHT I NEED TO GIVE UP TO LIVE MORE CLOSELY WITH GOD? Our PARISH MISSION starts this Monday evening at 7:30 PM and will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The theme for the mission is THE COMPASSIONATE LIFE. The evenings will be led by Fr. Andy O’Reilly, C.PP. As you prepare to renew the new life of the Risen Lord at Easter, discover again how your faith empowers you to face the issues of everyday life with hope and courage. Our next HOLY HOUR will be on THURSDAY, MARCH 5th, from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the church. All are welcome! The ADULT CONFIRMATION GROUP will meet on MONDAY, MARCH 9th, at 7:15 PM in the Parish Office. The SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK will be celebrated SUNDAY, MARCH 22nd, at the 11:30 AM Mass. All are most welcome to celebrate this sacrament of healing and forgiveness. The STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be prayed this Friday following the 8:00 AM Mass in English and at 7:00 PM in Spanish. You are welcome to bring your old palm to church and place the palm in the basket which will be placed in the sanctuary by the organ. The SACRAMENT OF PENANCE is celebrated on SATURDAY afternoon from 4:00 PM until 4:45 PM. All are welcome to celebrate this sacrament of God’s forgiveness, peace, and healing. Please remember that during the season of Lent the holy water fonts are emptied. They will be refilled on Holy Saturday morning following Morning Prayer. Please remember that during the season of Lent the recommendation is that we do not place March 1, 2015 flowers by the shrines to Mary, St. Joseph, St. Anthony and the Sacred Heart. The flowers will return at the celebration of the Easter Vigil. “In the past, every icon painter began his or her career by reproducing the scene of the Transfiguration, not to escape into some imaginary paradise, but to die to self, by opening the self to Beauty crucified. The destiny of every Christian is written between two mountains: one from Calvary to the mountain of the Transfiguration. The face of the living God is to be seen in the faces of those who listen to Christ’s word and are transformed by it.” (The Saint Andrew’s Bible Missal) “We of the Taizé community look upon the Transfiguration above all as the celebration of that presence of Christ which takes charge of everything in us and transfigures even that which disturbs us about ourselves. God penetrates those hardened, incredulous, even disquieting regions within us, about which we really don’t know what to do. God penetrate them with the life of the Spirit and acts upon those regions and gives them God’s own face.” (Kathryn Spink) “Some days it’s easy to identify with a fellow who has had enough of a troubled life. He flops down, says he’s ready to get up, and has a nap. Well, it takes two naps, two jugs of wine, two jugs of water, and two hearth cakes - all served by an angel - to give him strength to complete his forty day journey. The Lord’s Day, every Sunday, is food and drink and rest for the journey. Every Sunday is like an angel that comes to us when our heart is too heavy. We desperately need our Sunday naps and “hearth cakes.” We desperately need a day free from business as usual, a day without errands, demands and travel. Recreation is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Without the Lord’s Day refreshment, Christianity itself would soon flop down unable to go any further.” (Hildegard Kerney) Administration FAITH DIRECT: Please consider helping Our Lady of Fatima Parish to save some money by switching to FAITH DIRECT. It makes sure that your weekly sacrificial support of the parish is here no matter what the weather is like or if you have to Page 3 be away for the weekend. It helps simplify your giving and also cuts down our use of paper envelopes. If you want you can give it a try for the coming six weeks of Lent and see how it works for you. You can sign up online by going to www.faithdirect.net. Our parish code is NY303. You can also sign up by mailing an enrollment form which is available in the parish office. The CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL: Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the annual CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL for 2015. Please help us to reach our goal for 2015 ($39,600). Every gift or pledge is deeply appreciated. Your support of the annual appeal helps our parish and our diocese to provide so many important pastoral care programs. Envelopes are available at the main entrance of the church. As of February 17th we have pledges amounting to $7,240.00. So far 35 members of the parish have made a gift or pledge to the CMA for 2015. Many thanks to all those who contributed to last weekend’s second collection for the CHURCH IN NEED. The PASTORAL COUNCIL will meet on Wednesday, March 11th, at 7:30 PM in the Rectory. The STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY, MARCH 17th, at 7:30 PM in the SACRISTY. The FINANCE COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY MARCH 24th, at 7:30 PM in the SACRISTY. This week you will receive a letter from Fr. Steve in the mail about our fund raising effort for PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY, FAITH FORMATION & CHURCH RESTORATION. Please give serious consideration to helping us reach our goal so that we can proceed with the work on the church, and our hope to expand our Social Ministry program as well as to continue to enhance our Faith Formation programs. Your gift or pledge will help us to make these hopes a reality and prepare our parish to coming years to continue preaching the gospel to all. Pledges can be paid over two year period. Please remember that our hope is to have as many parishioners as possible being a part of the parish undertaking so that all of us have a sense of March 1, 2015 ownership. Please remember that whatever gift or pledge might be all of them are deeply appreciated. Community Life Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. The scripture readings are challenging. In one Abraham seems to be willing to sacrifice his beloved son; in the second reading Paul writes to a church in Rome that is divided and in the gospel we listen to an account of the Transfiguration of Jesus, a mountain top experience that might very well be a post resurrection event that has been transposed to another part of the gospel. The three texts are not as easy as they might first appear. The first reading is from the Book of Genesis and it is another Abraham story. It is a disturbing reading, to say the very least. How could God ask Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac? Isaac was the child for whom Abraham and Sarah had longed. He was the center of their lives, the one who delighted them day in and day out. How could Abraham agree to such a request from God? The whole story has to be put into a context if we hope to understand what is being said. What kind of God would put someone to this sort of “test”? Unfortunately, it was customary among the ancient Near Eastern civilizations to sacrifice children by fire to their gods. Although child sacrifice was strictly forbidden, there were low points in Israel’s history when some of its kings resorted to this horrific practice. This section of Genesis is primarily a polemic against child sacrifice. Through Abraham’s experience, Israel was to learn that God is not some dark authority who requires the immolation of human emotions. “The Bible, read its great sweep and progress, is the revelation of God as love, a love more vast and profoundly wise than human souls can recognize.” With the substitution of the ram, Israel was to learn that God did not require human sacrifice and could not be manipulated by it. Paul writes to the Christian community in Rome which is divided. The Jewish converts to Christianity and the Gentile converts are quarreling among themselves. With a series of rhetorical questions, Paul expressed his belief that the redemptive power of Jesus’ Page 4 sacrificial death has revealed the love of God in a manner unsurpassed. Because of that love, all human conflicts and challenges pale into insignificance. Paul seeks to put to rest the differences within the Christian community. Because of God’s great love all of them, both Jewish converts and Gentile converts, they are truly one. The gospel is the Transfiguration. The disciples are offered a glimpse of Jesus’ glory! Moses and Elijah represent the law and the prophets. They both witness to the truth that Jesus fulfills the law and the prophets. “Looking around they no longer see anyone but Jesus.” To further affirm the unique and salvific role of Jesus, the voice from the cloud identifies Jesus as God’s Son and says; “Listen to him.” Mark proclaims in this gospel that the “Day of the Lord” has indeed come. Its fullness will come only after the death and resurrection of the Lord. In the meanwhile Jesus would dedicate himself to transforming others. The sinner becomes a forgiven believer, the alienated become friends, the sick and maimed are healed. The followers of Jesus are to continue his healing ministry. May these days of Lent continue to lead us to a grace filled Easter! Peace, Fr. Steve PALM CROSSES & EASTER BASKETS: On Friday, March 27th we will hold our annual making of Palm Crosses and Easter Baskets event at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. All are welcome! Toiletries are always welcome! Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who, through fasting, become more conscious of their faith and its interaction in daily life! March 1, 2015 Page 6 CaringHands From Small Beginnings, Come Great Things. Where did the time go? Six years, the first group of CaringHands Card Ministry began. Seven dedicated women sat at a table and began to recycle old used cards into beautiful new cards that were sent to the sick and homebound of family and friends of our parish. We meet every Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 PM till 3:30 or 4:00 PM depending on how much work there was to do or how many cards were needed. We have never taken a week off all these years as this is an ongoing ministry. The sick don’t take time off. Our first mailing consisted of 9 cards. We had to do a lot of research and find contact people related to the name on the sick list. After several months and weeks of publicity in the Focus we were able to make our lists of the names on the Sick and Homebound list. We followed up with phone calls checking on our people. We made it possible for them to choose whether or not they wanted their name in the Focus or just be mentioned as Sick or Homebound. And so it began…Today we send monthly cards to every name on the list and to those who chose prayers and cards only. Our mailing has grown to about 70 cards a month. Our Ministry continues to grow. When we remove 2 names from our list, we add 3 more. What can you do to help? First, your prayers are desperately needed. I have often stated that our cards are signed in your name – Our Lady of Fatima Family! Second, we are in need of used greetings cards such as birthday, anniversary or any occasion. Cut off the front and save for us. If you receive cards in the mail, don’t discard them; we will take them with envelopes. We always need envelopes! All donations can be left at the rectory with CARINGHANDS name written on the bag. LET US CARRY THOSE WHO CAN’T BE PHISCIALLY WITH US ON OUR LENTEN JOURNEY. 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others “No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people” -Pope Francis Answering the Call to Serve Father James Shelton, ordained in June of 2014, remembers the day he entered the Seminary. “From the first moment that I walked into the Seminary, I knew immediately that being a priest was what I wanted to do; I knew I was going to be happy and joyful serving God’s people.” The Catholic Ministries Appeal helps seminarians devote themselves fully to their studies as they prepare to serve as our priests. Today, serving as an Associate Pastor at Good Shepherd in Holbrook, Fr. Shelton hopes to reach out to others so they can “experience the joy and peace that the Lord provides.” Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone’s life. Thank you! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Make checks payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal Parish __________________________________ Pledge: $_______ Name ___________________________________ Down payment: $_______ Address__________________________________ City, State, Zip: _________________________________________________________ Phone: ________________________ Signature: _____________________________Date:________ March 1, 2015 Pablo escribe a la comunidad cristiana de Roma, que está dividida. “Miraron alrededor y no vieron a nadie sino a Jesús.” The Holy Thursday Mass will be bilingual. Morning Prayer starting at 9:00 AM – The Church sets aside different times each day for prayer. It is known as the Prayer of the Church or Liturgy of the Hours. These times of prayer are meant to remind us of the presence of God throughout the day and call us to place oneself in the presence of God. Morning Prayer during the Triduum is prayed communally. It consists of psalms from the Hebrew Scriptures and readings from the Scriptures as well as intercessions for the universal church. 8:00 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Bilingual) Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 10:30 PM. GOOD FRIDAY (April 3rd) we remember the Passion and Death of the Lord.
