Café Commerce helps startup community grow

In a room just left of the circulation desk at the downtown San
Antonio library, a group of local
entrepreneurs and small business
owners gather every Wednesday
morning to share presentations,
ask questions and sip on hot
coffee.
The downtown location has
become the home for Café Commerce, a new program dedicated
to helping startups and existing
businesses succeed in San Antonio. The free program has also
incorporated the “1 Million Cups”
structure of weekly coffee meetings that feature two six-minute
presentations followed by audience follow-up questions for 20

La obesidad y la diabetes son
dos de los problemas de salud
más graves en San Antonio
y, según expertos médicos, el
azúcar en bebidas es una de las
causas principales de estas enfermedades.
Con el propósito de concientizar a la comunidad sobre los
riesgos del exceso del consumo
del azúcar, particularmente en
las bebidas, el condado de Bexar
formó una coalición con varios
líderes en la ciudad para lanzar
una campaña educativa.
Líderes de distritos escolares,
empresas y hospitales se reunirán
en las próximas semanas con
el juez del Condado de Bexar,
Nelson Wolff, y con la corte
de los comisionados del
condado para
dialogar sobre
como pueden
ayudar a que la
comunidad tome
decisiones más
saludables.
“Nosotros creemos
en la libertad que la gente
puede comer y beber lo que quiera, pero como líderes tenemos
una obligación de educar a la comunidad sobre los problemas que
pueden tener a causa del exceso
de azúcar”, expresó Wolff. “San
Antonio siempre ha sido una de
las ciudades más obesas, lo que
causa una muerte más temprana
y además tenemos un problema
tremendo con la diabetes y otras
enfermedades crónicas”, añadió.

said during her startup presentation. “Anyone who has worked
with mobile apps knows it takes a
while to get things perfect.”
Veronica and her husband,
Jerry, have worked to create an
application that would allow
SAFD officers to get union news
updates, benefit changes, and
work schedules on their mobile.
Jerry, who has been a firefighter
at SAFD for 28 years, believes
the app would be more effective
at communicating updates than
current print magazines or mass
emails. The app is currently free to
download, but the couple hopes to
make the app available to all firefighters and eventually the SAPD.
“We haven’t had anyone say
they don’t want it,” Veronica
said during a small group session.
“People want to be connected,
and the departments want to communicate with their workers in
real time.”
When a group member asks
questions about their plans for
cyber security and marketing,
Cortes seems unsure, but she’s
confident that she can find someone at Café Commerce to help her
find answers.
“You’ll hear pitches from people who make cricket cookies
to people who make security
applications,” Peter French, the
president of Café Commerce said.
“We’re really industry-agnostic.
Because of that diversity, you’ll
have this blending of people. I
think folks feel like ‘oh, I can
identify with that person,’ or ‘I

Justamente la semana pasada,
el comité del National Dietary
Guidelines actualizó sus recomendaciones por primera vez en
los últimos cinco años y sugirió
que los americanos reduzcan su
consumo de azúcar a no más de
10 por ciento de su consumo total
de calorías.
“Eso significa que no deben de
consumir más de 12 cucharaditas
de azúcar al día, pero desafortunadamente por lo regular los
americanos consumen 22 cucharaditas de azúcar al día”, afirmó
el Dr. Bryan Alsip, principal
medico oficial de University
Health System.
Alsip destacó que es importante saber que no nada más están
hablando de sodas, sino también
de jugos, bebidas energéticas, el
café y el té.
“La buena noticia es que
podemos reemplazar todas estas
bebidas con agua”, aseguro Alsip.
“El agua satisface la sed mucho
mejor, es gratis y la puedes encontrar el cualquier lugar”.
El doctor añadió que las bebidas azucaradas pueden ser
consumidas siempre y cuando
sea con moderación y que tengan
claro que son básicamente dulce
en forma de líquido.
Antes de tomar bebidas azucaradas, Alsip recomienda que
se pregunten: ¿Cuántas barras de
dulce me quiero comer hoy?
Los detalles sobre la campaña
aún no se han determinado pero el
juez comentó que probablemente

Abogada urge la prohibición de
centros de detención de inmigrantes

Una madre salvadoreña huyó
de su país con sus tres hijas cuan­
do hombres entraron a su casa,
pusieron una pistola a su cabeza
y amenazaron con violar y matar
a sus hijas si no les daba una cantidad de dinero que ella no tenía.
Llenas de angustia y temor, las
cuatro huyeron a los Estados Unidos en busca de seguridad, asilo
y libertad.
Sin embargo, desde que llegaron
en agosto del 2014, han estado
encerradas en el centro de detención para inmigrantes de Karnes,
el cual se encuentra a 60 millas al
suroeste de San Antonio.
Esta familia es una de las 15
por las cual la abogada Virginia
Raymond ha luchado por liberar
del centro de detención.
Hasta junio del año pasado,
era común arrestar a inmigrantes
buscando asilo en los Estados Unidos cuando llegaban a la frontera,
y dejarlos libre en cuanto los
oficiales determinaban si el inmigrante tenía un temor legítimo
y no re­presentaba un riesgo para
la nación.
A raíz de la reciente ola migratoria de Centroamérica, la
adminis­tración del presidente
Barack Obama decidió mantener a
los solicitantes de asilo en centros
de detención de inmigrantes sin
oír sus casos.
El 20 de febrero del 2015 el juez
federal James E. Boasberg estimó
que cientos de madres y niños no
pueden ser encarcelados basados
en la creencia de que todos son un
peligro para la nación. Además,
el juez ordenó que cada caso sea
investigado independien­temente.
Si los inmigrantes muestran
tener un miedo legítimo, podrán
ser liberados bajo una fianza de
entre $1,500 y $15,000.
Raymond expresó estar contenta
con la reciente decisión, pero asegura que no es suficiente porque
no protege a todas las familias en
los centros de detención.

El fin de la tele
La tele ya no
es lo que era.
Acabo de en­
trevistar en la
televisión a tres
jóvenes que no
tienen televisión.
Jorge Ramos En la Internet –
concretamente
en YouTube– hay millones de
otros jóvenes que los ven y los
siguen. Esos millones de jóvenes
tampoco tienen televisión, y si la
tienen, no la ven. Bienvenidos al
futuro.
Este fenómeno significa dos
cosas. La primera es que hay una
gigantesca migración de ojos, de
la televisión a las computadoras y,
sobre todo, a los celulares.
La segunda es que esto es un reto
enorme para los medios de comunicación tradicionales; quienes no
se adapten, y muy rápido, a este
cambio en el consumo de videos
e información están condenados a
desaparecer.
Los “milenios” (jóvenes de 18
a 34 años) crecieron viendo televisión pero ya la desecharon (o se
encuentran en el proceso de hacer­
lo). Y sus hermanos más jóvenes
son miembros de la primera gene­
ración que vive al margen del
televisor; lo han reemplazado por
tabletas, computadoras y celulares.
Para los que trabajamos en la
televisión esto significa que esta-
mos produciendo contenidos que,
con creciente frecuencia, se ven
por primera vez a través de medios
digitales y en redes sociales. Hoy
no es extraño que las entrevistas y
reportajes que hago para Univisión,
en español, y para Fusion, en inglés, sean vistas en pantallas que no
son de un televisor. Esto es nuevo.
Al mismo tiempo, están surgiendo todos los días productores
independientes de contenido en
la Internet y en las redes sociales.
Ellos compiten con mucho éxito
contra programas de la televisión.
Muchas veces nos ganan. Lejos
de un estudio de grabación, filman segmentos cortos –de 10 a 20
minutos– en sus propias casas, en
restaurantes y en la calle (a un costo
mínimo) y producen programas sin
censura, con absoluta naturalidad
y generalmente centrados en sus
propias vidas. Eso no lo sabe hacer
bien la televisión.
Chumel Torres, Héctor Trejo
y Caeli Santa Olalla están revolucionando la forma en que los
latinoamericanos se informan y se
entretienen. Si no los has visto, el
futuro ya te dejó atrás.
Chumel Torres dice que no es
periodista. Pero se atreve a decir lo
que muchos periodistas en México
callan. Siguiendo la tradición de
comediantes estadounidenses
como Stephen Colbert y Jon Stewart, Chumel (@ChumelTorres) se
burla de la clase política mexicana.
Con una buena dosis de humor y
groserías, refleja la indignación de
muchos ante los abusos de los ricos
y poderosos.
“La Internet me dio la oportunidad de vivir de mis chistes”, me
dijo en una entrevista. Su programa
“El Pulso De la República” es visto
por millones en celulares y laptops
los lunes y jueves. Le creo más a
Chumel que a muchos reporteros

Los videos que sube Caeli Santa
Olalla (@CaElike) a YouTube han
sido vistos más de 350 millones
de veces. Ya quisiera cualquier
presidente del mundo tener una
audiencia así. Pero lo de ella no
es la política. Cuenta su vida en
video, desde lo que se va a poner
ese día hasta las dudas que surgen
la primera vez (cualquiera primera
vez). “Se puede vivir de esto”, me
dijo Caeli, una actriz que acaba de
cumplir 25 años de edad y que busca hacer comedia. “Lo padrísimo
de esto es que podemos vivir de
algo que nos encanta hacer y que
poder ser tal cual somos”.
Lo de Héctor Trejo, mejor conocido como Bully (@Bullysteria),
son los retos, “un diario de vida” y
un buen intento de crear conciencia
social. Se junta con sus amigos y,
en cámara, se comportan como
si nadie los estuviera viendo. Vi
un video muy divertido mientras
se comían las alitas de pollo más
picantes de México. El resultado
es impresionante. Millones lo ven y
miles le comentan qué les pareció.
Esa retroalimentación es la envidia de cualquier partido político,
iglesia o medio de comunicación.
¿Qué es ser cool? Le pregunté.
Su res­puesta fue inequívoca: “alguien que se la pasa bien siendo él

Héctor, Caeli y Chumel no se
venden. Punto. Hacen y dicen lo
que quieren y no cambiarían esa
libertad por un programa en televisión. De hecho, la televisión les
interesa cada vez menos porque sus
amigos, y la gente que a ellos les
importa, ya no ven televisión. Las
nuevas generaciones ya no hacen
una cita televisiva. Si quieren ver
algo, se meten a la Internet y lo ven,
igual a las dos se la mañana que a
las dos de la tarde.
No, esto no es el fin de la televisión como medio. Siempre habrá
quien la quiera ver. Sobrevivirá de
alguna manera, igual que la radio
y el cine. Pero el futuro, que ya
llegó, es digital, interactivo y en
otras pantallas.

Enrolling more Texas families in healthcare
Thanks to
the Affordable Care Act
(ACA), more
Texans have
affordable,
Lloyd Doggett quality health
insurance than
ever before. But unfortunately,
many more are still not enrolled
in health insurance.
More than 1.5 million Texans
might have to pay a penalty on
their taxes this year for not being
insured in 2014. And for those
who did not purchase insurance
for 2015, that penalty will be even
greater next year. But now, thanks
to a change I have long urged,
uninsured Americans filing their
taxes between Feb. 15 and the
tax filing deadline have another
chance to enroll and avoid next
year’s penalty.
This new opportunity will be
available from March 15 through
April 30, 2015.
The main ACA signup period
ended on Feb. 15. That means,
until now, there has been no way
for people realizing the consequences of being uninsured for
the first time to quickly pick a
2015 plan after they make their
2104 payment. Without this
extra time, these people would
be forced to also pay the higher
penalty next year.
If you have not yet enrolled in
healthcare through the Affordable
Care Act, taking advantage of this
enrollment period is a crucial op-
portunity to avoid next year’s fine
while helping your family stay
healthy and financially secure.
It is important to remember
that you are not required to buy
insurance if you already have
coverage through another source,
such as Medicare, or qualify
for an exemption. Even if that
describes you, however, the
ACA has improved benefits for
Americans in a number of ways.
Now, seniors on Medicare can get
mammograms, colonoscopies,
and an annual wellness visit for
free, and their prescription drug
costs have been greatly reduced
as the “donut hole” in coverage
is gradually closed. Important
preventative services for women,
including prenatal care, are now
available at no cost as well. And
young adults can stay on their
parents’ insurance until the age
of 26.

if you are eligible enroll. There
are a number of community organizations that are offering free
help to sign up for health coverage, including CommuniCare
and CentroMed health clinics.

week’s column will be
the final in
my series,
“What If?”
Over the
last couple
of weeks, I
Steve Walker
have offered
my speculations and possible consequences concerning faith and
the lack of faith. On any given day
we make hundreds of split second
decisions that alter the course of our
destiny. I have suggested that faith
is a necessary ingredient to successfully reach one’s goals, and I truly
believe that to be a fact.
When you ask yourself “What If,
I…” you can pose many subjects,
such as lost my job? Get married?
Get hit by a car? Win the lottery?
Can you imagine your life being
different if these questions are different from the life you now live?
I certainly can if events in my life
had turned out much differently.
At Christmas every year, the
television broadcasts the movie
“It’s a Wonderful Life,” with actor
Jimmy Stewart (aka George Bailey). The question is raised to make
us address as to whether or not we
make a difference in people’s lives.
Hopefully the answer is “yes.”
In a quick synopsis, a depressed
Bailey prepares to jump from a
bridge because he believed his life
was falling apart and his family
would be better off without him. His
guardian angel Clarence intercedes,
shows George what life in Bedford
Falls would have become for the
residents there if he had never lived.
The whole movie speculates how
the Bedford Falls citizens would
have fared without him. Obviously
they would all have lived much
different lives as well as his family. That detail affected everyone
in the city.
In my own life I still wonder
“What If?” Had I not served on
the Balcones Heights City Council
some years ago, and not fought for
a bus for the 20 elementary students
who were being forced to walk
across IH10 where there was no
safe crossing to attend school? They
were put at risk because the district
didn’t provide them with transportation and many of the parents didn’t
have vehicles to take them.
Thank God I was able to convince other council members to vote
to budget a bus for the little ones.
My teacher instinct kicked in. They
have that bus even today. “What If,”
I hadn’t been there to insist they do
so and one of those precious students were killed walking to school?
Scary to think about it.
I always beat myself over the
head asking “What If” I had not
graduated high school or college
despite the fact I was told I couldn’t
because I wasn’t smart enough.
Thank God I didn’t buy into that
or life would be totally different
for me. I certainly could have
never been elected as a judge for
four years and made a difference
in many people’s lives especially
truant students.
Taking this thought of “What If”
to a different or a much large arena,
I pose the challenge to the reader to
speculate on “What If” we lost the
Battle of the Alamo? How would
our lives be different? Would we
all carry Mexican passports and
all speak Spanish? Since the first
week of March is the anniversary
of the Battle of the Alamo, I leave
you with just that thought.
As I grow older and hopefully
wiser, I have posed the question
many times as many of La Prensa
readers may have at one time or
other. Apparently it is a lifelong
process that won’t stop any time
soon. It is what it is.
You could say that the thought
of “What if” has given me a new
perspective. Perhaps you the reader
have come to the same conclusion.
But then again, “What If” you
didn’t?
And as always, what I write is
“Just a Thought.”

You can expect nothing but
the best of the local culinary and
drink scene at the Second Annual
San Antonio Flavor festival on
Thursday. Hosted at the San Antonio Museum of Arts (SAMA),
the event showcases the newest restaurants and bars while
benefiting Culinaria, a nonprofit
dedicated to making San Antonio
a culinary destination.
Attendees can also look forward to the “Whole Foods Culinary Showdown,” which pairs
renown chefs like Jason Dady,
Stefan Bowers of Feast, Robbie
Nowlin of Citrus at Hotel Valencia and Chef Lisa Astorga-Watel
of Bite with local celebrities including KSAT 12 anchor Ursula
Pari and former Spurs players
Sean Elliott and Brent Barry.
Although there are many talented female chefs in the local
culinary scene, Chef AstorgaWatel is the first woman to
participate in the Culinary Showdown.
“I didn’t go last year, but I’ve
heard nothing but good feedback
from people,” Astorga-Watel
said. Everybody had a blast,
so when they invited me to
participate it was exciting. I’m
excited to be the first woman
participating.”
During the showdown, each
team will be given 30 minutes
to create a delicious dish using
surprise ingredients. Local food
experts and audience members
will then judge the plates to
choose this year’s winner.
“I’m going to brainstorm with
Ursula,” Astorga-Watel said.
“Last year, they did a burrito!
This year, we have to pick what
we’re going to do at the last minute so there’s not much time to
think, but it’s going to be much
more challenging than a burrito.”
Attendees can visit booths
throughout the festival to try
food and drinks from local restaurants including Bite, which
will have a table of Chilean white
crab gazpacho.
“This is a great opportunity for
people and restaurants,” AstorgaWatel said. “Alot of people who
go to the event have never been
to these restaurants, and the culinary scene is growing so much
for chefs, it’s an exciting time to
be here in San Antonio.”

The second presentation features advancements in cyber
security by Paul Rivera and Omar
Quimbaya of Def-Logix Inc.,
which hopes to introduce a new
cyber security and network security training program that would

Quimbaya and Rivera ask the
audience for their experiences
with cyber security before explaining their goal to make quality
cyber security an affordable product for new businesses. They then
break into small groups to discuss
possible issues or shortcomings
with the program’s ideas.

market and it worked or didn’t

Latino convoca becas para
fomentar estudios musicales

esta semana su primer concurso
de becas abierto a estudiantes
de música de 24 países para
fomentar el desarrollo artístico
de la “próxima generación que
continuará el legado de la música
latina”.
“Esta es una iniciativa de la
fundación que se creó el año pa­
sado cuando la Academia Latina
de la Grabación cumplió quince
años y que busca devolver a la
sociedad parte de lo que recibe de
ella a través de incentivos”, dijo a
Efe Manolo Díaz, vicepresidente
de la Fundación Cultural Latin
Grammy, con sede en Miami.
Con esta convocatoria, detalló
el ejecutivo, se busca apoyar “a
los jóvenes talentos que quieren
dedicarse de manera profesional
a la música, pero que enfrentan
limitaciones económicas”.

at their 115th Annual Meeting
awarded Dr. Jeff C. Rabin the
honor of Educator of the Year.
Rabin is a tenured Professor of
Optometry, Director of Research
Programs, Director of Assessment and Chief, Visual Neurophysiology Service at the
University of the Incarnate
Word Rosenberg School
of Optometry (UIWRSO).
He has been with UIWRSO
since its inception in 2008.
Since 2009, Rabin has
taught multiple courses in
the Professional Optometry
Program as well as in the undergraduate vision science program.
He developed and manages the
UIWRSO Assessment Program,
which conducts numerous on-line
assessments of faculty, teaching
and administration. Rabin made
substantive contributions to the
accreditation of UIWRSO, participating in every accreditation visit
beginning in 2009 culminating
with full accreditation in 2013.
As Director of Research Programs, Rabin developed and
implemented the inaugural Summer Fellowship Training Program
in 2011 allowing interns to participate in summer research under
faculty supervision. Rabin developed a new clinical service—the
UIWRSO Visual Neurophysiology Service in which he conducts
and supervises fourth year interns
on visual electrophysiological
and related testing of challenging
referral patients.
Rabin is active on multiple
UIW and RSO Committees,

Tax Assessor preparing for Texas’ EE.UU. extenderá el permiso de trabajo a

meetings to ensure that all drivers
in our area are aware of the upcoming State’s transition to a new
single-sticker system for vehicle
inspections and registrations.
“The Texas Department of
Motor Vehicles begins the “Two
Steps, One Sticker” program for
Texas drivers starting March 1,
2015. The concept behind this
program is to align inspection
and registration sticker expiration
dates, so that both are due at the
same time, and therefore require
only one sticker. As the County’s
official agent of the Department
of Motor Vehicles, my office’s
responsibility is to ensure that
the driving public is aware of the
change and how it will affect them.
The first year will be a transition
year and there may be some confusion, but as always, we are here to
help,” Albert Uresti said.
In the new State system, vehicles will need to pass an inspection prior to renewal of their
registration; however, the inspec-
tion stations will no longer issue
a sticker; they will issue a vehicle
inspection report (VIR). The cost
of an inspection sticker will not
change; however, instead of paying the inspection station the entire
$14.50, drivers will pay the inspection station only $7, and the State’s
portion, $7.50, will be paid at the
Tax Assessor’s Office or a Title
Service Company when obtaining
the vehicle registration.
“When the vehicle passes inspection, the inspector will enter
the vehicle identification number
(VIN) into a statewide database.
The County Tax Office should be
able to verify the information on
the State’s database at the time of
registration and then issue a single
sticker that will serve as proof of
both inspection and registration.
It is important for drivers to keep
their vehicle inspection report as
backup proof of an inspection,”
Uresti said.
Vehicle Registration will continue to be available online, by
mail, or in-person at the County’s
Tax Office. If you mail in your
registration, be sure and include
a copy of your vehicle inspection
report.

Nunca es tarde para valorar el
tiempo perdido y evaluar los hábitos
negativos que nos han conducido a
obtener numerosas enfermedades,
sino crónicas pues momentáneas
durante el día. Tal es el caso de
quienes por años no se han alimentado apropiadamente tomando
su respectivo desayuno, ya sea
en grandes, medianas o pequeñas
porciones.
Mi doctor siempre me ha dado
buenas opiniones sobre la dieta que
he llevado, al menos en los años
del nuevo milenio. “Usted, señor
Franco, se mira como un individuo
de menos edad. Deme la receta que
utiliza para darla a mis otros pacien­
tes”, me dijo mi estimado “doc” una
consulta reciente.
A lo que le respondí: “¿Qué
pasó, doctor, si usted mismo me la
dio hace ya varios años? Si no lo
recuerda le refrescaré la memoria.

De acuerdo a los expertos en
nutrición, el desayunar antes de
comenzar actividades cotidianas, ya
sea en casa o en el sitio de empleo,
ayuda al sistema digestivo a comenzar carburando de forma ideal.
Con el desayuno nuestro metabolismo estará perfecto, evitará contraer úlceras y acidez estomacal en
caso de que uno siempre ande con
prisa para llegar a tiempo al trabajo
o a la cita con el doctor, entre otras
importantes actividades matutinas,
es recomendable tener listos en el
refrigerador los productos que se
comerá en un desayuno casero rápido. Entre ellos usted puede tener
a disposición blanquillos duros, pan
de barra de trigo (tostado), alguna
fruta y bebida de su gusto (café, té,
jugos o agua).
Ya con algo en su estómago, el
sistema sanguíneo comenzará a
carburar debidamente para evitar
desgaste físico y mental.
En lo que a mí respecta, el desayunar sanamente con productos
de buen contenido vitamínico y
proteínico preparados en casa me
sigue apoyando físicamente desde
que dejé la “afición” por las bebidas
embriagantes.
Mi apetito por un desayuno nutritivo es cada vez mejor.
A estas alturas, que estoy por
cumplir sesenta años de edad y
quince de sobriedad, no puedo
sobrepasarme, como lo hacía cuan­
do me emborrachaba y amanecía
“crudo”.
En esos días mis desayunos
tenían que ser picantes o bien
condimentados. Mis preferidos
eran una variedad platillos, entre
ellos menudo, tamales, huevos
rancheros, machacado con huevo
y jalapeño, café negro que en veces
me lo servía con una pizca de un
buen tequila. A ello me ‘obligaba’
mi alcoholismo o una de las llamadas “ Bloody Mary”, que es una
bebida compuesta de agua mineral
o regular, salsa picante roja, licor,
sal, azúcar, limón y pimienta.
Como evidencia sobre un buen
desayuno, les diré a mis tres lectores que, recientemente, en casa
tuvimos visita de familiares venidos
de Los Ángeles, California. Una de
ellas, en su segundo día de estadía,
todavía no se podía acomodar al
sistema de vida de San Antonio
por tener dos horas adelantadas al
tiempo del Pacífico (California).
Nuestra huésped, después de
ducharse y arreglarse para irse de
compras, comenzó a quejarse de dolor en la parte derecha de su cabeza,
indicando que podría ser migraña,
a lo cual ya está acostumbrada. Fue
cuando metí mi cuchara diciéndole
que no se fuera sin desayunar. Ella
dijo que no acostumbraba a desayunar tan temprano, ya que por sus
ocupaciones de llevar a sus hijos
menores a la escuela y prepararle
almuerzo para llevar a su esposo,
entre otras actividades domésticas,
definitivamente no se podía dar
tiempo de tomarse ni un medio
vaso de agua.
Sin embargo, logré convencerla
para que nos acompañara en el
desayuno.
El día que se despidieron de
nosotros, ella nos dio las gracias
comprometiéndose a continuar
desayunando de la forma que lo
estuvo haciendo durante su estancia
en San Antonio.
“Mis vacaciones fueron de lo
mejor, gracias por sus atenciones
y sugerirme tomar alimentos por
la mañana. El dolor de cabeza es
menor, me voy contenta y optimista”, expresó la visitante californiana.
En estos días, por coincidencia, he venido escuchando por la
radio programas conducidos por
renombrados dietistas diplomados,
quienes a lo largo de su programa­
ción intercambian opiniones con
radioescuchas sobre temas en el
hábito alimenticio.
Será porque como expertos en la
materia han detectado que personas
no han cumplido con sus deseos del
año nuevo. Ello se palpa a diario
con tan solo ver los restaurantes
llenos de clientela. Sin especificar
estilo gastronómico yo también me
he dado cuenta que el consumidor
está cada día más presente en los
diversos supermercados donde
compran platillos ya preparados,
así como en restaurantes de San
Antonio y sus alrededores.
Los centros gastronómicos de
comida oriental son los más visi­
tados, quizá porque cuentan con
variedad de viandas preparadas con
vegetales, mariscos, carne de pollo,
res y puerco.
En dichos restaurantes estilo
buffet se pueden apreciar anuncios
en los que se le informa al público
de servirse lo que se puedan comer
para evitar el desperdicio de comida. Muchos de los consumidores
hacen caso omiso, sirviéndose
grandes cantidades en uno o dos
platos, saboreando una tercera parte
y dejando a un lado el resto que irá
a parar al depósito de desperdicios.
Vivimos en una nación donde
hay de todo, se puede consumir
en pequeñas, medianas y grandes
porciones. Ello es solo para los que
tienen la manera de hacerlo y cos­
tearse sus desenfrenados hábitos.
El alcohólico se emborracha
hasta que pierde el conocimiento y
los glotones se “deleitan” comiendo
más de la cuenta, sin reparar que
ellos mismos se están haciendo
un tremendo daño en su calidad
de vida.
Desde que dejé la tomada he logrado recuperar mi calidad de vida
comiendo vegetales, frutas y huevo
sin la yema, sin llegar a la necesidad
de convertirme en vegetariano.
Siempre es bueno estar al tanto
sobre programas alimenticios, lo
cual nos ayudará a no contraer
enfermedades gastrointestinales,
las cuales no se las deseo a nadie.
Recuerden no malpasarse por las
mañanas; dense tiempo de preparar
un desayuno breve, pero nutritivo,
y en pocos días verán el excelente
cambio.
Otras recomendaciones son que
acudan a su doctor o busquen a die­
tistas titulados para que sean ellos
quienes les sugieran el plan a seguir
en su dieta.
En otro programa radial escuché decir que el gobierno federal, median­te un selecto grupo de
asesores de salud, darán su fallo
para que en el futuro esté “prohibiendo” en el libro de la dieta nacional
el exagerado consumo de blanquillos y carnes selectas de res, ya que
ambos productos contienen un alto
promedio de colesterol.
De acuerdo a los primeros informes, en el país existe un gran
número de personas que padecen
alto colesterol, ya sea por genética
o por el desmedido consumo de
productos que lo traen.
“Lo que se tratará en dicha medida es que la gente comience a darle
un descanso al sistema vascular, que
es el principal órgano que resulta
dañado por alto colesterol, que crea
placas de grasa en las arterias coronarias del corazón”, afirmó uno de
los locutores.
Bueno, eso está por verse, y
porque sea aprobado como sugeren­
cia suprema que venga a darle
cura a quienes padecemos alto
colesterol.

encouraging words. I always
strive to give the absolute best
of my knowledge, but sometimes
that’s just not enough.
You see, there’s one quality
you absolutely, positively must
have in order to achieve your
goals. What is it? Willpower.
Willpower is the ability to control your thoughts, restrain your
impulses, and resist temptations.
It’s doing what’s right and good
for you in the long run, not what
we want to do right now.
It doesn’t matter if I give you
the absolute best tip on shedding
belly fat, or the number one exercise to vanish cellulite. Without
willpower, that belly fat and
cellulite isn’t going anywhere.
Life happens, things get in
the way. If you have high willpower, you can overcome these
obstacles. But if you don’t, you’ll
find a way to make excuses and
stop what you’re doing. In other
words, willpower determines
whether you’re going to get what
you want, or let excuses get in
the way.
Experts believe that willpower
is like “a moral muscle” —it can
get tired if you overuse it, but
it can also be strengthened by
exercising it regularly.
There are many ways you
can strengthen your willpower.
For example, do things that are
contrary to your usual habits like
brush your teeth with the opposite hand, watch “The Notebook”
without shedding a tear, or drive
a different route to work.
You can also try these three
tricks:
Remove all temptations. If
you know can’t look at a Cheetos bag without ending up with
orange fingers, it’s time to say
goodbye. If, for whatever reason,
you must have them in the house,
serve yourself a small handful in
a plate. Don’t take the bag with
you —you WILL eat more than
you should. Be sure to also keep
them in a cupboard you don’t
usually open.
Do as the toddlers do. When
your kid is doing something they
shouldn’t do, you distract him
with something else, right? The
same should be applied to our
eating habits! Instead of focusing on what you can’t eat, think
about all the options you can eat.
If you’re bored watching TV and
thinking about ordering a pizza,
get up and go for a walk with a
friend.
Keep it simple. For some reason, when we make up our mind
to start a new challenge to lose
weight or build muscle, we seem
to go for complicated, regimens
specific rules and crazy requirements. Subconsciously, we seem
to believe that the more elaborate
the program, the more likely it is
to be the one that finally works.
Start small with short-term
goals. For 48 hours, stay away
from chocolate, avoid fried
foods, or lay off the carbs —
bread, pasta and flour tortillas,
for example.
Try this, and you’ll start feeling the transformation coming.
And who knows, maybe the next
time someone offers you chips,
you’ll have the strength to say
“Not today, thanks!”

have a high risk of developing
other illnesses, including heart
disease. It is important to understand how you can manage your
glucose levels, eat healthy, and
exercise, in order to prevent or
delay the onset of other ailments
and take care of your heart.
Know Your Numbers. Do
you have high blood pressure,
low levels of “good” (HDL)
cholesterol, high levels of “bad”
(LDL) cholesterol or triglycerides (another type of fat in the
blood), or a waist that’s larger
than 35 inches in women and 40
inches in men?
If you answered “yes” to any
of the questions above, you may
be at an increased risk of a heart
disease. You should always be
aware of these numbers and
if you are unsure, please ask
your doctor. Other factors that
increase your risk of developing
heart disease are smoking, family history of heart disease, and
eating foods high in saturated
fat and cholesterol.
Your doctor needs this information to work with you on
a plan for better heart health.
There are different types of
heart disease that people living
with diabetes are at risk for:
Coronary artery disease.
Your coronary arteries are
in your heart. Fatty deposits, called plaques, can narrow them. If plaque suddenly
breaks, it can cause a heart attack. Exercise, eating a healthy
diet, and not smoking are musts.
Congestive heart failure.
This is an ongoing condition in
which the heart loses the ability
to pump blood effectively. The
main symptoms are shortness of
breath when you’re moving and
leg swelling.
Many people have both conditions and need to take action.
If you smoke, it’s time to quit!.
Set a date and talk to your
doctor. If you’ve tried to quit
before, it’s not too late. Many
people try several times before
they kick the habit for good, and
remain smoke-free! .
Nearly everyone with diabetes can benefit from getting
more exercise. It’s good for
your heart and helps control
your blood sugar. Even brisk
walking counts, so you don’t
need a gym!
If you’re not active now, let
your doctor know before you
begin any exercise routine. After reviewing your medical history and a physical exam, they
will help you determine what
type of exercise is best for you.
Some people with diabetes
need to take medicine to lower
their blood pressure or improve
their cholesterol levels. Your
doctor may recommend that you
take a daily aspirin to protect
against heart disease.
Keeping track of your personal medical information is
a key step in managing your
care. Go to all your doctor appointments and let them know
how you are doing. Together,
as a team you can work toward
a much healthier heart and a

New Year, same team, results
not up to par seems to describe
the Spurs this season.
Although the league, the organization, and passionate fans
seem to have given the team a
pass but the month of February
has been a wild rollercoaster
ride for the team.
The Spurs have every player
back on the roster healthy, but
seem to struggle as their fellow conference opponents have
gotten better and seem to not
fear the decade-long juggernaut. Although the team is not
struggling like the Los Angeles
Lakers, the fear of the Spurs has
now dissipated.
While keeping up with the
Los Angeles Clippers, pushing
them into overtime, they were
toyed with by superstar Steph
Curry and the Golden State
Warriors.
The game against the Warriors revealed and exposed the
Spurs. Tim Duncan and Cory
Joseph have stepped up tremendously, but it seems to not be
enough for the Spurs.
Tony Parker just doesn’t look
like the Tony Parker Spurs fans
love. Even averaging 14 points
a game, he is just not the same
game changer. Manu Ginobili
averages 12 points a game but
he has struggled the most this
year. Turnovers have tormented this team, in particular
Ginobili and Parker.
Coach Pop continues to push
and keep these two important
veterans, but it seems as if
Parker has lost his drive and the
end is near for Manu’s career.
Fans are starting to lose patience and may be questioning
if the Spurs have it in them to
pull out another championship.
But they will continue to hang
on and stick by this team they
love.
It’s up to Coach Pop to lead
this team into a decent playoff
spot as the end of the season
draws closer and closer. The
playoffs will be here before you
know it and our Spurs will have
to step up.

Busquets extends contract
FC Barcelona defensive midfielder
Sergio Busquets agreed to extend his
contract for another year, until 2019,
with the option to then renew for a further
season, the Spanish club announced on
Thursday. Busquets’ current contract
was set to expire in 2018.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced
the game schedule for the league’s
ninth annual Latin nights program,
titled Noches éne•bé•a (eh-nay-bayah), which will feature 14 games

A rough ride for Spurs on Rodeo Road Trip

Within a church, the high vaulted
ceilings tower ominously above me
as I enter the confessional.
I offer my numerous ‘bless me
fathers’ and reluctantly admit to
my last day of confession, which is
usually met with a scoff of disbelief
from the priest.
“I have doubts father,” I stammer
before pausing, contemplating the
likelihood of forgiveness. He urges
me to continue, so I summon the
strength and finish my confession.
“I don’t believe the Spurs are
championship contenders this
year.”
I hear the scrape of the confessional window, and the frantically
mumbled prayers of the priest as he
vacates the enclosed booth, throwing various signs of the cross my
way and offering the occasional
moloch.
I wake up drenched in sweat,
convincing myself that it’s all a
dream.
Perhaps, the Spurs still reign
dominate over the Western Conference and are poised for a second
consecutive title run.
I soon realize that this is wishful thinking – the pipe-dream of a
wishful fan – when I thumb through
the NBA app to see the Spurs clinging hopelessly to lower level standings in the Western Conference.
The Alamo City is awash in silver and black, and the Spurs faithful would probably banish me to
Houston or Dallas if I ever doubted
the ways of Gregg Popovich and
company.
Prepare to correct me in the error
of my ways, and excuse me as I
pray for the unfettered absolution
of my confession, but as a Catholic
is I must be completely honest.
If the Spurs play as a lower seed
in the first round, they will be
bounced from playoff contention.
For the first time since the David
Robinson era, they are in danger of
missing the post season completely.
As the trade deadline passed,
something struck me as foolish
when Popovich gave the Spurs a
0.4 percent chance of making a
trade by the deadline.
Was there no slot for Goran
Dragic, to aid the dilapidating Tony
Parker? Could there be no value
found in Lance Stephenson, who
would excel in any of the Spurs
defensive schemes? How about
any member of the Brooklyn Nets?
I was personally excited for a
potential Kevin Garnett acquisition, a veteran capable of alleviating some pressure off of Duncan’s
ancient legs.
General manager R.C. Buford
adopted a philosophy of “if it ain’t
broke, don’t fix it.” Within the last
several years, the same core group
have stayed competitive, but the
Spurs machine is in need of some
serious WD-40 and renovation.
It’s like the wooden roller coaster
that everyone recalls fondly from
their youth, but after revisiting the
ride as adults, they clutch their sore
backs with regret for the rest of the
afternoon.
Health problems have led to consistency issues for the Spurs all season. San Antonio has experimented
with 23 starting lineups throughout
the season and none have managed
a particularly successful outcome.
Due to injuries, Kawhi Leonard
and Tiago Splitter have missed a
sizable chunk of the year.
After receiving a three year
$12 million extension, Patty Mills
hasn’t been the same player since
tearing his rotator cuff in the post-

season last year.
Parker has nursed a bum knee all
year, and his stats in all significant
categories are the lowest since his
rookie debut.
This season is a swan song for
the Spurs, a final album by a veteran rock group, before the members
disperse to various side projects
that never achieve the same accolades of the original band.
Nine Spurs will become free
agents over the summer.
The majority of the cap space
will be pocketed by Leonard over
the offseason, a no-brainer franchise player.
The rest of the team’s future is
uncertain.
Aging veterans will retire or
unceremoniously be let go to other
teams. Even bigs Aron Baynes
and Jeff Ayers are likely to be
dismissed in favor of position players who possess better defensive
abilities.
A superstar free agent is in the
mix for signing, but how likely
would it be to pry them from their
respective franchises?
Small markets will go as far to
build monuments in their honor and
rename the city in order to retain
their services.
In the loaded West, other teams’
cores have remained relatively
healthy throughout the season,
and have developed chemistry to
show for it.
The top four teams presiding
over the Western Conference are
the arguably the deepest they have
ever been.
To date, San Antonio holds a
4-7 record against these teams this
season.
Teams lingering beneath the
Spurs salivate at the possibility of
overtaking the defending champs
for playoff contention.
The surging Oklahoma City
Thunder are a lock for a postseason
berth, and are 9-1 in their last ten
games. The New Orleans Pelicans
possess a three game win-streak
and are impressive when all-star
Anthony Davis is healthy.
After struggling through a losing
month in December, their first time
since 1999, the Spurs were poised
for a second half comeback.
The Rodeo Road Trip is supposed fabled grounds – Spurs
players develop chemistry like
alchemists, secluded in a lab developing various incantations of
championship success.
This season, the only solution
concocted was ambivalent formulas and inconclusive theories.
They limped to a 2-5 rodeo road
trip record, the first losing streak
since taking the trip in 2003.

de UCLA se ha venido ganando
oportunidades de ser enviado a

Spurs Road Trip...
Within the week, their second
four-game losing streak of the season has showcased the very worst
of the Spurs.
Each game, the Spurs have the
higher turnover percentage, lower
shooting percentage, and lower
3-point percentage than their opposition. The latter aforementioned
struggle is a troubling stat – the
Spurs are shooting close to 10 percent less in 3-pointers made than
last season.
From the start of the losing streak
last Thursday, Popovich employed

James Kirkland has been moved
from the Alamodome in San Anto-
nio to Minute Maid Park in Houston
on May 9.
After the announcement of the
highly anticipated mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and
Manny Pacquiao, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya
announced Canelo-Kirkland would
be moved to the following weekend.
“The week around Cinco de
Mayo will be the biggest in years
for boxing, bridging the present and
the future as the three biggest stars in
the sport all step into the ring in just
a seven-day period,” De La Hoya
said. “ It is my hope and belief that
this May week will usher in a new

Lady in Blue to S.A. missions
Today’s Catholic

San Antonians will have the opportunity to learn more about Venerable Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda,
known as the Lady in Blue, and
her connection with San Antonio’s
Spanish Colonial missions at an
international summit taking place
at St. Mary’s University University
Center on Saturday, March 21.
This free and open to the public
all-day event starts at 8:30 a.m.
and will focus on Sor María’s 17th
century missionary work among
native tribes of Texas through bilocation from her cloistered convent
in Ágreda, Spain. It precedes an
October conference in Rome which
will be advancing the cause for Sor
María’s beatification.
Sponsors of the local conference
include the San Antonio Historical
Association, the municipality of
Ágreda in Spain, St. Mary’s University and the Texas Before the Alamo
film project. The 35-member delegation from Spain attending is especially looking forward to meeting
members of the Adai Caddo tribe,
whose ancestors were converted to
Catholicism through Sor María’s
mystical visits. Nuns at her convent
in Ágreda reported she levitated in
ecstatic prayer during these experiences, similar to St. Teresa of Ávila.
“The natives of New Mexico and
Texas base their faith on the bilocation visits and the evangelization
works of Sor María de Jesús de
Ágreda,” said William E. Millet,
filmmaker for the documentary,
Texas Before the Alamo, A Saga
of Spanish Texas 1682-1736. Millet has interviewed members of the
Jumano and Tigua tribes in West
Texas and the Adai Caddo of East
Texas.
The Tigua chief told him, “We’ve
been Catholics since the 1620s.”
When federal troops came in after the Civil War to drive out the
plains Indians, the mission Indians
were left alone. “Because we were
Catholics and we were around the
missions, that’s what saved us,” said
the chief. The same was true for the
Adai Caddo in East Texas. Tribes
in both East and West Texas spoke
of their ancestors being visited by a
“lady in blue.”
In 1689, a few days after the
Alonso De León Expedition arrived
at the massacre site of France’s Fort
St. Louis in East Texas, they were
greeted by a group of natives calling themselves Tejas, their word
for “friend.” Amazingly, they were
carrying a portable altar and knew
the Sign of the Cross. The chief
told the stunned Spaniards that his
mother had been visited by a lady
wearing a blue mantle, who had
brought Christianity to their people
and promised them that Franciscans
would come to baptize them — the
one thing she could not do. “I invite
you to come back to my village,”
the chief told the Spaniards, “and
bring Franciscans back to instruct
us in the faith.”
Back in Spain, the cloistered Sor
María (whose habit was the Franciscan blue) had been recounting that
while in deep prayer she would find
herself in another land, evangelizing people she identified as Tejas
(a confederacy to which the Adai
Caddo belonged) and Jumanos, noting specific details of the terrain and
weather. One entry in her journal
noted: “There was no language barrier between the Jumano Indians and
I. They call their fearsome chieftain
Capitan Tuerto, so named because
he only had one eye.” Twice she
recorded her experiences in this distant land which she never physically
set foot upon. Her first confessor
told her to burn these manuscripts
as they were a sign of pride. A later
confessor instructed to her to take up
her pen and record them again. She
did and they became her book, The
Mystical City of God.
Father Alonzo de Benavides, Father Custodian of the New Mexico
missions, who met with the Jumanos, later questioned Sor María extensively in Spain on her mystical
excursions, and she was interrogated
by the Spanish Inquisition as well,
satisfying both. She later became
spiritual advisor to King Philip IV
of Spain.
“She had this passion for evangelization,” said Millet. “The priests
who came here who founded Texas
— because they founded the missions that turned into the little villas
and ranches and everything else
— were very passionate about continuing her missionary work here in
the lands that she had already evangelized.” And with them, these friars
carried Sor María’s writings. Both
Father Damián Massanet (founder
of the first mission in East Texas
and of the missionary College of
Santa Cruz de Querétaro) and Father
Antonio Margil (founder of Mission
San José and missionary College of
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de

followers.
Three missions (San Francisco
de las Tejas, San José de los Nazonis and Nuestra Señora de la
Purísma Concepción de Acuña)
were founded in far East Texas as
a result of the De Leon Expedition’s encounter with Sor María’s
converts, noted Millet. In 1731, for
safety, these missions were later
moved to the San Antonio River
and renamed, respectively, Mission San Francisco de la Espada,
Mission San Juan Capistrano and
Mission Concepcion. (Mission San
Antonio de Valero, now known as
the Alamo, was originally Mission
San Francisco de Solano on the
Rio Grande River and was moved
here in 1718. Mission San José y
San Miguel de Aguayo, founded in
1720, was always in San Antonio.)
Many people are not aware, Millet
related, that the Spanish missions
were never intended to be a permanent system and that, once the native
people were converted and able to
sustain themselves, a mission and
all its farm and ranch lands were to
be turned over to them. It was the
coming of the Republic of Texas and
influx of Americans with greed for
choice lands that prevented that from
fully happening. While some bad
things did happen during Spain’s
colonization of what is today Texas,
Millet pointed out the missionaries
were truly looking out for the indigenous people and protecting them
within walled mission compounds
from the marauding Apaches and
Comanches, who were kidnapping
their women and children.
While working in Mexico on
Texas Before the Alamo, a government official involved in historic
preservation there told Millet and
Dr. Félix D. Almaráz, Jr. (history
consultant and actor in the film) that
it was the defensive walls surround-
ing San Antonio’s five missions
which made them unique and why
UNESCO had accepted them for
World Heritage Site nomination.
“When you go to the missions in
Mexico,” said Millet, “you don’t
see any walls — they’re not there.”
Walls were not necessary in Mexico’s missions, he said, as the native
communities were already congregated in one place, with large
Spanish presidios nearby to protect
them. In San Antonio, the nomadic
natives needed to be gathered within
the mission walls. Under Spanish
law, there was only supposed to
be one mission in an area, noted
Dr. Almaráz, “but for defensive
purposes, five then clustered here
and gave a special character to this
community.”

Spain’s delegation to the March
21 summit at St. Mary’s University is especially interested in Sor
María’s Texas experiences, noted
Millet, and will be using what they
learn here in their presentation at the
fall conference in Rome furthering
her beatification cause. The local
conference, he said, “is a labor of
love for everybody involved to really promote the Catholic heritage
and the true Spanish heritage of
this state.”

“Para… borrar las
secuelas del maltrato”

En este mensaje tratamos el
caso de una mujer que “descargó
su conciencia” en nuestro sitio
www.conciencia.net. Lo hizo de
manera anónima, como pedimos
que se haga; así que, a pesar de
que nunca se lo había contado
a nadie, nos autorizó a que la
citáramos, como sigue:
“Durante años... predominó
el maltrato entre (mi esposo y
yo), del cual era testigo nuestra
pequeña.... Hace dos años, (Dios
transformó nuestra vida) y hemos
tratado de cambiar. (Pero) nuestra
hija ha sido objeto de maltrato
durante años, por nuestra parte,
gritos, amenazas, humillación, indiferencia y carencia de tiempo y
afecto para ella. Se ha tornado una
niña quejosa, llorona, pesimista.
“Sabemos que somos responsables por el daño que le hemos
causado. ¿Qué podemos hacer
para devolverle la seguridad,
la alegría, y tratar de borrar las
secuelas del maltrato al que la
hemos sometido?”.
Este es el consejo que le dio
mi esposa:
“Estimada amiga:
“¡Los felicitamos por su nueva
vida como seguidores de Cristo!
Como han descubierto, una relación personal con Dios nos da
la fuerza y la sabiduría necesarias
para lograr una vida mejor para
nosotros y para nuestra familia.
Cuando Dios perdona nuestros
pecados, ya no tenemos que
preocuparnos por las consecuencias eternas de nuestro pasado.
Sin embargo, como también han
aprendido, el perdón de Dios no
borra las consecuencias naturales
de los pecados que cometimos en
el pasado ni de los que cometamos
en el futuro....
“... Vale la pena señalar que las
actitudes negativas y la tendencia
a quejarse a veces se deben a un
factor genético.... Es probable
que uno o más de sus padres o
abuelos tengan cierta tendencia
al pesimismo, y que ella haya
heredado ese rasgo negativo de
parte de esas personas.
“Pero ya sea que la haya heredado o la haya aprendido a través
del ambiente en que se ha criado,
el quejarse y ser llorona son características en las que a ustedes
les gustaría influir de manera
positiva. Si usted y su esposo
muestran una actitud positiva
en su propia vida, ella habrá de
seguir ese ejemplo en su subconsciente....
“Léale un pasaje de algún libro
a su hija cada noche antes de que
ella se duerma. Escoja los relatos
verídicos de personas que han
vencido grandes obstáculos en la
vida. Muéstrele videos de atletas
con prótesis en las piernas y de
deportistas sin brazos.... A medida que se entere de las personas
de veras desafortunadas que la
rodean, su hija poco a poco irá
comprendiendo que tiene muchas
razones por las cuales ser positiva
en cuanto a su propia vida.
“Propóngase cambiar la manera
en que le hace preguntas a su hija
con relación a los pormenores de
su vida. Por ejemplo, en lugar
de preguntarle: “¿Cómo te fue
hoy?”, lo cual probablemente
resulte en una respuesta negativa,
pregúntele: “¿Qué sucedió hoy
que más te gustó?” Si ella contesta: “Nada”, entonces pregúntele: “¿Qué sucedió hoy que
hubieras cambiado si tú fueras la
maestra?” Y cada vez que ella dé
una respuesta negativa, determine
que la próxima vez usted hará la
pregunta de tal manera que a ella
le cueste más trabajo contestar de
un modo pesimista.

New poll reveals generational
gap in struggles with faith,
difficulties with dads

Two findings emerged in a new
national poll on fatherhood and
faith: the younger the generation,
the more people report having
difficult relationships with their
fathers. At the same time, the
younger generation reports the
highest percentage of people
who are struggling with belief in
God. Atheist-turned-Christian Lee
Strobel, who commissioned the
survey, is raising the provocative
question of whether these findings
might be related.
“The poll itself can’t prove
or disprove a direct correlation
between those findings,” Strobel
said. “Certainly, there are a lot of
factors that influence a person’s
belief in God. But in my case
— and in many others I’ve seen
through the years — a person’s relationship with their earthly father
seems to influence whether they’ll
be receptive to a heavenly Father.”
The poll* was conducted by the
Barna Group in conjunction with
Strobel’s new book, The Case for
Grace (Zondervan, Feb. 24, 2015),
in which themes of faith and fatherhood are intertwined. In this
new book, Strobel describes his
own rocky relationship with his
dad, which was one of the factors
that moved him toward spiritual
skepticism.
He was an atheist for much of
his life, until a nearly two-year
investigation of the evidence for
Christianity prompted him to
become a Christian in 1981.The
former award-winning legal editor
of the Chicago Tribune is now a
Professor of Christian Thought at
Houston Baptist University and
the New York Times best-selling
author of more than twenty books
on Christianity.
Among the findings of the
poll:
• The younger the responders,
the more likely they were to report
difficulties in relationships with
their fathers. Among the Elder
generation (ages 69 and up), 15
percent said they had a poor or
below average relationship with
their dad while growing up. For
Baby Boomers (ages 50-68), the
number was 17 percent; for Gen
X (ages 31-49), it was 22 percent.
And for Millennials (ages 18-30),
the number grew to 26 percent —
or one in four.
• More than one-third of Millennials are struggling with belief in
God, compared with one-quarter
of Gen X and one-fifth of Baby
Boomers and Elders. Put another
way, 62 percent of Millennials are
certain God exists, compared with
74 percent of Gen X, 82 percent of
Boomers, and 79 percent of Elders.

la decisión de la Comisión sobre la solicitud. Además, la Comisión sólo otorgará
una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso sobre los asuntos que fueron presentados antes del plazo de vencimiento y que no fueron retirados posteriormente.

A la celebración del Año
Nuevo en el calendario chino,
que esta vez corresponde al
Año del Carnero (The Ram),
concu­rrieron escuelas de danza
y organizaciones sociales para
mostrar su riqueza cultural en
sabrosos platillos típicos, coloridos vestuarios y bailes regionales; sin faltar demostraciones
de artes marciales.
Entre otras delegaciones participaron la de China, Corea,
India, Filipinas, Japón, Indonesia, Tailandia, Paquistán y el
Confucius Institute de UTSA.

Todo un éxito fueron las visitas que empleados y ejecutivos de la empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) realizaron durante el Rodeo Read Trip 2015. En la foto aparece la ejecutiva
Jamie Malone-Martínez, quien en la biblioteca de Davis Middle School ayudó a uno de los equipos
participantes en el programa de lectura. La misión del programa auspiciado por SS&E en conjunto con el SAISD es con el propósito de crear conciencia y responsabilidades en el combate por
reducir la tasa de analfabetismo en estudiantes de primaria y secundaria. Como meta fue ayudar
a estudiantes en lectura, escritura y el desarrollo de habilidades académicas.

Desfile de Modas Red Dress promueve salud del corazón

Recientemente, University
of the Incarnate Word (UIW)
presentó su desfile anual de
modas Red Dress Fashion Show
& Health Fair para promover la
salud del corazón en la mujer.
De acuerdo con el tema, las
modelos lucieron vestidos de diferentes diseños trabajados en color
rojo, que es el color emblemático
de American Heart Association y,
normalmente, es el color alusivo
al cuidado del corazón.
Los diseños fueron elaborados
por estudiantes avanzados de
la escuela de confección de la
universidad y atrajeron a una
audiencia interesada en la moda y
en apoyo de los futuros modistas.
Aunque en escala menor, el
evento preparó el ambiente para el
desfile de modas que anualmente
presentan las modistas graduadas
en Incarnate Word en la semana
de Fiesta San Antonio, y que es
uno de los más importantes en la
región.

Fiesta 2015 para el próximo mes

Amaya’s Tacos: Not your average Taqueria

From the outside, Amaya’s
Tacos appears to be the last thing
the area needs- another taqueria.
However, a quick look at the
menu inside shows a fresh approach to classic San Antonio
dishes that has never been seen
in the Eastside until now.
Brothers David and Ruben
Arciniega teamed up with cousin
Joel Herrera to create a producedriven menu that would fill the
area’s food dessert void with affordable and delicious dishes like
the enchiladas de jardin, which
features corn tortillas filled with
mushrooms, potatoes and cheese
with a flavorful sweet pea puree
sauce.
“I think a lot of people see us
and and say ‘Oh, you’re a taco
joint, we’ve seen that a thousand
times,’ but we’re not just tacos,”
Ruben said. “We’re looking to
control the culinary narrative on
the Eastside. This area is going
to blow up at some point, and
we want to be part of that, while
keeping the traditions here alive.”
While the family has cooked
together informally for years,
David and Joel bring their culinary background and experiences
to Amaya’s. David attended St.
Phillip’s for his culinary degree,
and currently works with CIA students at Nao Restaurant. Joel has
worked at several establishments
since graduating from the CIA
San Antonio. The family hopes
that their professional training
and Eastside upbringing bring a
new type of dining experience to
the neighborhood.
“We want to make great food
accessible to people who don’t
necessarily have five Gs in the
bank,” David said. I’ve worked
at high-end restaurants and for
my parents to say to me ‘Mijo,
we can’t even see what you eat
because it’s like a million dollars,’ It shouldn’t be that way,
that’s definitely something that’s
driving us.”
Since the restaurant’s soft
opening last December the family has created a basic menu
structure- a bowl, a specialty taco,
and house plate that expand and
change depending on the season.
The menu’s current specialty is
fish tacos. Instead of the usual frying method, David and Joel serve
blackened tilapia with tangy cabbage, a smoked poblano crema
and radishes with microgreens.
“On this side of town, you have
to gain trust with the people,”
David explained. “If you [come]
over here and say ‘I’m organic,
I’m GMO-free,’ people say ‘I’m
staying away,’ because right
away they think ‘expensive’ and
‘inaccessible.’” What I’m doing
is trying to get in with things that
people do know, there’s nothing
on this menu that I didn’t grow
up with.”
Amaya’s has already developed unique flavors with homemade aioli, pickles seasoned with
cumin and cilantro, and a brisket
smoked in-house every Saturday.
Amaya’s has already gained a
following for breakfast and lunch,
but they hope to open for dinner
hours soon.
The restaurant has begun taking
an active role in the the Eastside
food community, and has plans
to set up a booth next month at
the new Dignowity Hill Farmer’s
Market, where they can demo
simple and healthy dishes for their
neighbors.
“We won’t be making a dish
that takes hours to make,” David
said. “No, we want to make it
simple, like an agua fresca, a
drink that is very indigenous to
this area. Don’t get me wrong, I
love my kool-aid, but it’s good to
have options.”
Named for David’s daughter
Amaya, the restaurant has become
a way for the family to honor their
Eastside roots while bringing new
concepts to the area.
“She represents for us the future, for our family and the community,” Ruben said. “We want
to maintain the tradition, but we
want to introduce new things too
that have never been accessible
before.”
Amaya’s Tacos is located at
1502 E. Commerce St, just minutes away from the Carver Cultural Community Center. The
restaurant opens for breakfast and
lunch Monday through Friday
from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Pierce The Veil’s dreams collide with reality

Playing sold out shows at a venue in their hometown of San Diego,
Calif. went from being a dream to
reality for the post-hardcore band
Pierce The Veil.
But before they could make
their dreams reality, they faced
tough times which have become
some of the bands best memories.
La Prensa talked to the bands
bassist Jaime Preciado about their
struggles, triumphs, and what went
through his mind before going on
their first tour.
“It was pretty wild,” Preciado
recalled about the first time ever
leaving home to hit the road.
Preciado was working at Costco
at the time. He’d put in three years
with the company, had a 401K,
and, in his words, it was a good
company to work for. So, leaving
that behind was something he was
hesitant in doing, and according to
him his parents weren’t “stoked”
about the idea.
“I remember when we started
and we were able to tour we sat
down and were like, ‘Yo, if we’re
gonna do this, we’re gonna do it
for reals. We’re not gonna half-ass
anything. We’re gonna be on the
road and this is gonna be our life.’
“We were all scared, and we
were all nervous. But we just
stayed on the road.”
And stay on the road they did
as their success and popularity only
rose from there.
The quartet of talented musicians started their musical journey
early on in their life when brothers
Vic and Mike Fuentes started the
band as a duo in 2006 and later
joined forces with Tony Perry and
Preciado.
Since then, the success of the
band has skyrocketed especially
after their third album “Collide
With The Sky” reached No.12 on
Billboard’s Top 200 Albums.
Despite the albums success
and earning the label of “Most
Anticipated Music” of 2014, PTV
still faced some challenges.
The band started off when all
the members were at a young age,
Preciado explained that he was the
youngest one and because of this
he faced certain challenges.
“There was times where I
couldn’t even go into the green
room or dressing room. I had to
stay back in the van or in the RV,
so it was definitely tough. But
we were definitely young and we
learned a lot very quickly,” Preciado said.
The young band played SXSW
on one of their first tours where the
bars in Austin serve as venues for
many musical performances. But
Preciado didn’t let his age hold
him back from having a good time.
“I couldn’t even go to a bar,”
he said. “I remember I had to
sneak into all those shows, and I
remember seeing Dustin Kensrue
from Thrice. I snuck in and they
put X’s all over my hands with
like the hugest permanent marker.
“I was in the bathroom just rubbing my skin off so I could chill in
the bar and watch Kensrue and it
worked out.”
Another struggle to add to the
list of memories was when the
band’s RV got stuck in mud and
the guys had to get it out. Ah, those
bitter sweet bus troubles.
“One time we were driving and
our RV got stuck in this crazy,

crazy mud, and we all had to get
out and, literally, all of us were
covered in mud trying to pull the
RV out. We were using pieces
of wood and it was the gnarliest
thing,” Preciado said.
“We couldn’t even go back in
the RV because we were so dirty.
We had to get a hotel, it was the
worst night ever but it was so funny
because as soon as you realize
you’re just not gonna be clean you
just say “F**k it.” We looked so
horrible; I don’t even know how
we got a hotel that night.
“We looked [totally homeless],
yeah, like, super homeless, ‘We
need a room. We’re gonna pay you
in change, here you go,’” Preciado
joked.
The RV survived, and it’s still
in working condition. It’s kept at
Mike and Vic’s parents’ house in
between trips to LA when the band
has to shoot a music video or things
of that sort.
While the parents of the band
members might not have been
“stoked” about this whole touring
band idea, rest assured they are
now more than proud. PTV took
the risk of their lifetime by leaving everything to make a name for
themselves in the music industry
and when people started recognizing them, that’s when their parents
began to recognize that their sons
were in no way amateurs.
Preciado commented that the
band went to multiple concerts
and venues, many times they were
at the same shows before even
knowing each other, with the same
mentality, “One day I want to sell
this place out with my own band.”
That dream did not fall short
as the guys sold out not one but
two nights at a local venue in their
hometown of San Diego and then
went on to play at the Viejas Arena,
a place where college basketball
games take place in San Diego.
“[It’s] unreal for us, it’s crazy,”
Preciado said.
“I think the first time she [Preciado’s mom] actually saw us in a
magazine it, like, made it real for
her, you know. It wasn’t just like

Major changes are happening
within the San Antonio music
scene, outlets wise. With a few
more venues popping up on the
N. St. Mary’s strip in March and
management from Limelight
handing the medium over to the
management from 502 Bar so they
could focus on turning their other
forum, The Korova’s basement
into its own separate entity.
While others are hustling and
bustling with huge modifications,
local coffee shop Rosella’s on E.
Jones, decided to simply to create
and add on. Last week, Rosella’s
made the announcement that they
have joined forced with local
promotional media management
group SATX Music to bring live
music to the shop. The live perfor-
mances kicked off last Friday with
musicians such as Snowbyrd, DJ
Proper Yarn and Critical Mass. It
continued on into Saturday with
The Vegan Street Tacos and side
projects of members from bands
such as Tides and Deer Vibes.
“SATX Music is a perfect
partnership that falls hand in hand
with our mission,” said Charles
Gonzalez, owner of Rosella’s
Coffee in a media release. “They
have a pulse on the music scene in
San Antonio and will consistently
work hard to bring great acts as
well as attracting new guests to
what we believe is a very unique
venue in the city.”
The partnership is a gateway to
new opportunities for both parties
to help benefit the local music
scene with a series of events.
Libby Day, Director of Operations explained to La Prensa that
Rosella approached them with the
idea to extend their Friday and
Saturday hours and to capitalize
their beer selection and live music
is a way to keep patrons around
after the sun goes down.
“As SATX Music grows it helps
us achieve [part of] our mission:
to create opportunities for local
artists to connect with fans and
gain professional industry experience. With every new location, we
hone our booking and production
process to ensure the most positive
experience for all invested parties.
Plus, more music and at an allages location! We’re all about that
win-win-win,” said Day.
While the project is still in its
beginning stages, Day says that
patrons can expect an eclectic mix
of genres when it comes to sound
and style and both parties encourage local musicians to submit to

Texas (UT) en Austin pagó 2,2
millones de dólares a la familia
de Gabriel García Márquez por la
adquisición del archivo personal
del fallecido nobel de Literatura,
según reveló esta semana esta
institución educativa.
La compra del archivo, que
contiene varios manuscritos,
unas 2,000 cartas, 40 álbumes
de fotos e innumerables notas y
apuntes, además de otros objetos, fue anunciada a finales de
noviembre de 2014, aunque entonces no se hizo pública el costo.
La transacción se realizó meses
antes a través de Glenn Horowitz,
un intermediario con oficina en
Nueva York.
Entre los objetos más valiosos
del archivo están el documento
definitivo de “Cien años de
soledad”, que el nobel entregó a
la imprenta en 1967, y uno de los
pocos manuscritos que existen
de “En agosto nos vemos”, su
novela inédita.
La Universidad de Texas se
negó, en un principio, a hacer
público el contrato de la compra y
solicitó a las autoridades texanas
un permiso especial para mantenerlo en secreto, contrariamente
a lo que exige la ley estatal, pero
la petición fue rechazada hace
unos días.
Por eso, la institución reveló
esta semana el montante de la operación, según confirmó a Efe Jen
Tisdale, una portavoz de la UT.
El Centro Harry Ransom, la
institución de la UT que posee
el archivo, tiene una de las colecciones literarias más importantes
del país, con objetos de James
Gabriel García Márquez, escritor colombiano que ganó el

de su icónica botella de cristal
“contour” con varias exhibiciones artísticas, una campaña
mediática global y una canción
conmemorativa creada para la
ocasión, informaron fuentes de
la empresa.
La ciudad estadounidense de
Atlanta, sede de la compañía y
cuna de este refresco, considerado uno de los inventos más
rentables de la industria moderna,
acogerá este jueves el acto central
de lanzamiento.
En el recinto The High Museum of Art se inaugurará la exposición “La botella Coca-Cola:
Un ícono americano a 100”, que
reúne obras emblemáticas del
último siglo de artistas de la
talla de Andy Warhol en las que
aparece la botella, cuya patente
oficial data del 16 de noviembre
de 1915.
Además de esa muestra, que
permanecerá abierta al público
desde el 28 de febrero hasta 4 de
octubre, se realizará otra titulada
“Tour de arte de la botella CocaCola: Inspirando a la cultura pop
por 100 años”, pero en este caso
itinerante por México, Colombia
y Costa Rica.
El proyecto artístico del aniversario incluye un “reto” para
diseñadores contemporáneos de
diversos países a los que se pidió
“reinventar” la botella pensando
en “una audiencia moderna” y
cuyo esfuerzo se verá reflejado en
salas de exhibición y en un libro.

depression, was found strangled
with a belt in his California home
last Aug. 11, and his daughter
abandoned the social networks
shortly thereafter due to the cruel
comments she received about the
incident.

through it and lost someone, the
ones that have been through it
and that I’ve found have gone
on to lead very full lives have
found that they just had to know
that there’s no point questioning
it. And there’s no point blaming
anyone else for it, or there’s no
point blaming yourself or the
world,” she said.
“It happened and you have to
continue to move and you have
to continue to live and manage,”
she added.
Zelda also said that the celebrated and beloved comedian
who people knew from the big
and small screens was very different from the man she knew
and lived with. While saying that
he portrayed himself to people as
he wanted them to see him, and
he was an “incredibly friendly”
man, she also said that he was
very “private.”
Robin Williams married three
times and had three children, all
of them with his first two wives.
Zelda Williams was born on
July 31, 1989, and is the actor’s
only daughter. She is the person
to whom he sent his last Instagram
message, wishing her an upbeat
happy 25th birthday about a

Denis Villeneuve dirigirá la
secuela de “Blade Runner”

Denis Villeneuve, conocido por sus
trabajos en “Prisoners” o “Incendies”, será el encargado de dirigir la
segunda parte del clásico de la ciencia ficción “Blade Runner”, anunció
la compañía Alcon Entertainment en
un comunicado.
La empresa, asimismo, confirmó
la participación de Harrison Ford,
que volverá a encarnar al detective
Rick Deckard en esta continuación.
En mayo del año pasado, Alcon
Entertainment informó de que Ford
había sido invitado a participar en
la secuela.
“Es un honor que Harrison se una
a nosotros en este viaje con Denis
Villenueve, un talento singular,
como comprobamos personalmente
en ‘Prisoners’”, dijeron los fundadores de Alcon Entertainment, Andrew Kosove y Broderick Johnson.
Villeneuve concluyó recientemente el rodaje del thriller criminal
“Sicario”, protagonizado por Emily

Alcon ha desarrollado esta secuela
desde que se hizo con los derechos
en 2011 de manos del productor
Bud Yorkin.
La historia de “Blade Runner”
(1982) se ubica en un Los Ángeles
futurista, en el año 2019, en el que
el hombre ha creado clones llamados “replicantes”, empleados para
labores peligrosas.
Pero esos “replicantes” se rebelan
contra sus fabricantes en una colonia
espacial, lo que origina un enfrentamiento entre creador y criatura.
Deckard es uno de los encargados
de dar caza a los “replicantes” en la
Tierra que han escapado de la colonia y se esconden en Los Ángeles.

Ópera mariachi “El pasado nunca se
termina” hará en marzo debut en Chicago

I wanted to love Will Smith’s
latest movie “Focus” as much as
I loved getting jiggy with it back
in 1998 when Smith dropped
“Big Willie Style.” But, that
wasn’t the case; “Focus” is scattered and predictable.
The trailers showed so much
promise. I was thinking something along the lines of “Oceans
11” but got a movie with no
real plot and some eye candy
(Margot Robbie). The chemistry between the Will Smith and
Robbie is undeniable but that
gets old about 20 minutes into
the movie.
Smith plays Nicky, a smooth
talking con man. The con game
is a family business, and Nicky
is good at what he does. Then
comes along Jess (Robbie) to
shake things up, she is an amateur thief looking for something
more, something bigger.
Reluctantly, Nicky takes her
under his wing and lets her in
on an operation taking place
during the Super Bowl. Jess
holds her own and romance between the two begins to kindle,
however, it doesn’t last long and
Nicky gives her the boot. Then,
it’s like the film starts over as
“Three years later” appears on
the screen and it’s like a whole
new movie again.
Nicky has moved on, so one is
led to believe, and he’s working
on a big score. The type of job
where everyone gets filthy rich
and goes on to live on a beach
somewhere. Nicky is hired to
do a job for a very rich race car
owner, Garriga, but as a con man
Nicky always has something
bigger in the works. But, the
kicker is that Jess, who he abandoned just a few years back, is
also part of Garriga’s life.
It appears that Jess is Garriga’s girlfriend but even that is
a lie that she concocts to make
Nicky jealous.
The movie had promise and
considering directors/writers
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s
past work (“I Love You Philip
Morris”) I expected more. But, it
appears the formula for “Focus”
was to pair a former A-lister
with a smoking hot a blonde and
it will sell.
SPOILER ALERT: The film
has quite the twist which saves
it from be a complete bomb, and
the film has its moments.
Robbie stands out at times and
her beauty is undeniable. Smith,
on the otherhand, is starting to
show his age and his disconnect
with the younger generation.

música de mariachi hará su debut
mundial los próximos 28 y 29 de
marzo en la sede de la renombrada
Ópera Lírica de Chicago en Illinois.
El director general de la Ópera
Lírica, Anthony Freud, anunció
que la obra, “El pasado nunca se
termina”, cuenta con la participación musical del mexicano José
“Pepe” Martínez y la participación
del Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán,
así como un elenco de actores
hispanos.
“Después de nuestra increíblemente exitosa presentación de
‘Cruzar la cara de la luna’ en el
2013, es excitante traer una nuevo
trabajo a Chicago que funde al mariachi y la ópera”, manifestó Freud.
Esta obra será la segunda vez en
los 60 años de historia de la institución que se ofrecerá una ópera en
español en Chicago con subtítulos
en inglés, para el público aficionado y la comunidad inmigrante
mexicana en general.
“El pasado nunca termina” comienza en una hacienda mexicana
del estado de Morelos, en 1910,
en vísperas de la Revolución
Mexicana, donde las vidas de dos
familias, una europea y una indígena, se entrelazan.
La historia se desarrolla durante
varias generaciones hasta llegar
el presente familiar en México y
Estados Unidos, y “presenta temas
universales sobre la identidad, el
hogar y la familia que estoy seguro
van a resonar en el público tanto
aquí en la casa de ópera y de las
comunidades (de Pilsen y Waukegan)”, expresó Freud.
En el elenco de la ópera figuran
los cantantes líricos latinos Abigail
Santos Villalobos, en el papel de
Amorita y Daniel Montenegro, en
el papel de Luis.
También integran el equipo Paul

El Mariachi Vargas, fundado en
1898 por Gaspar Vargas, en Tecalitlán (México) es considerado uno
de los grupos más influyentes de
la historia de ese género musical,
donde cantaron figuras como
Pedro Infante, Miguel Aceves
Mejía, Lola Beltrán y José Alfredo
Jiménez.

Eddie Redmayne vuelve a ser
noticia por un nuevo y retador rol.
A finales de esta semana los
medios británicos revelaron una
fotografía del nuevo papel de
Redmayne, esta vez como mujer.
En su próximo película, el actor
británico encarnará Lili Elbe, una
artista danesa del siglo pasado que
nació como hombre bajo el nombre de Einar Wegener y quien
fue una de las primeras personas
en someterse a una operación de
cambio de sexo en los años 30.
La película se titulará “The
Danish Girl” y está basada en la
novela del mismo nombre escrita
por David Ebershoff.
La película será dirigida por
Tom Hooper, el mismo director
de la cinta “The King’s Speech”.
La producción relatará la historia de Einar Mogens Wegener,
quien nació en Dinamarca, y
quien se sometió a una serie de
operaciones experimentales de
cambio de sexo en Berlín durante

A lo que él respondió a principios de este año en una entrevista publicada por el periódico
británico The Telegraph que la
dicha discusión era increíblemente válida pues hay muchas
y talentosas actrices transgénero
que pudieran hacer dicho papel.
Working Title es la productora
británica que está produciendo
el filme. Redymayne estará en
el papel principal y Alicia Vikander como Gerda, la esposa de
Wegener.
Anteriormente hubo otro intento de llevar a la pantalla la
historia de “The Danish Girl” en
la cual Nicole Kidman encarnaría
a Wegener/Elbe y Gwyneth Paltrow a su esposa.
This past week was filled with
proud moments for Latinos when
it comes to fine art aspects, a
major moral boost that was much
needed after previous weeks of
anxiety waiting on a decision to
be made for the Immigration Reform Act and months of grief over
the situations in Mexico.
Film
Last Sunday at the Oscar’s,
Hispanic director Alejandro
González Iñárritu won Best Picture for his film “Birdman”.
Though the moment came with
much controversy with the “green
card” comment Sean Penn made,
it did not tarnish the message that
Iñárritu was trying to get across in
his speech:
“The ones who live in Mexico,
I pray that we can find and build
the government that we deserve,”
Iñárritu said. “The ones that live
in this country, who are just part
of the latest generation of immigrants in this county, I just pray
they can be treated with the same
dignity and respect as the ones
who came before and built this
incredible immigrant nation.”
On a much more local scale,
at CineFestival last Sunday, I
attended the screening of Efrain
Gutierrez’s new film, “The Be-
trayal” and though the film focused on the Native American
struggles of South Texas; during
the QandA Gutierrez was praised
by his audience for what he has
done for the Hispanic community.
Gutierrez was the first Hispanic
male to have a film be inducted
into the National Film Registry
and low budgets have never
stopped the director from making
a film or fulfilling his dreams.
Music
Last week, SXSW announced
that for the first time ever, they
were going to have an all Latino
Showcase at Auditorium Shores
this year put on by SXAméricas
and will include artists such as Intocable and Bomba Estereo. The
event is free and will be in Lady
Bird Park on March 21.
On a much, much more local
scale, Freetail Brewery here in
San Antonio recently announced
their new beer called Piñata Protest in honor of San Antonio’s
own accordion-fronted punk band
that has broken barriers between
music genres and is the essence
of the San Antonio music scene.
Who would have dreamed that
Tejano and punk would create
such an amazing genre, and hopefully a quite delicious alcoholic
beverage?
However, with the celebration
of our culture and accomplishments here in the United States,
we must remember many Hispanics are here trying to create names
for themselves and establish a life
here in this country so we must
also remember the reason why.
Mexico has been in turmoil for
many years. Locals and natives
have been risking their lived to
flee the country because they fear
for their own safety in day to day
life due to the on-going Cartel
wars and despicable government
corruption.
After the 43 Ayotzinapa students went missing at the hands of
a government official, Mexico has
risen and a revolution is underway
but the country cannot do it alone.
Though it has been months, it
makes me proud to say there has
been a group here in San Antonio
that has been working tirelessly to
keep the situation relevant here
in the United States and to bring
some of the parents of the missing
students here to share their story.
Last Thursday, they held a
candlelight vigil outside of the
Mexican Consulate for the missing students and that is only the
beginning, they do not plan to
rest until the parents make their
way into the states to have their
voices heard.
Latinos recently became the
largest population in Texas, and
I’m proud see culture shining
through and being appreciated to
finally reflect that.
