Robot combate la transmisión del ébola

El reciente brote de ébola ha de­
jado a muchos aterrorizados, pero
un robot diseñado por una com­
pañía local pretende impedir que
cualquier tipo de virus se propague.
Creado por la empresa Xenex, el
robot evita que el virus sea trans­
mitido a otros individuos ya que en
menos de cinco minutos desinfecta
las habitaciones de hospitales que
han sido expuestas a la contami­
nación del virus.
Según Dr. Mark Stibich, inven­
tor del robot y fundador de Xenex
(www.xenex.com), el robot mata
el virus, bacterias y gérmenes uti­
lizando rayos ultravioleta de alta
intensidad.
Stibich explicó que existen tres
tipos de rayos ultravioleta: UVA,
UVB y UVC. Los rayos UVA y
UVB podrían provocar quemadu­
ras solares, pero los rayos UVC son
aún más peligrosos porque los or­
ganismos no están preparados para
resistir este tipo de radiación ya que
la atmósfera bloquea estos rayos.
Precisamente, el robot emite pul­
saciones de rayos UVC 1.5 veces
por segundo. En cuanto la luz es
emitida, fusiona el ADN de cual­
quier virus presente y lo destruye.
“La bacteria no tiene protección
contra este tipo de rayos, así es que
cuando la luz es emitida mata todo
virus y bacteria”, explicó Stibich.
Según los Centros de Control
y Prevención de Enfermedades
(CDC), el virus del ébola se trans­
mite a través de fluidos corporales y
por el contacto con equipo medico
contaminado.
Asimismo, CDC indica que el
personal de cuidado médico de
un paciente con ébola es el más
susceptible a contagiarse.
Stibich comentó que es muy im­
portante que las habitaciones sean
desinfectadas completamente y así
evitar que cualquier tipo de virus
se propague.
Según estadísticas reveladas por
el CDC, uno en 20 pacientes en un
hospital lucha contra una infección
que adquirió en el hospital.
El aparato fue creado en el 2011,
pero según Stibich, últimamente
más y más hospitales han mostrado
interés. Tiene un costo aproximado
de $104 mil dólares
Actualmente, más de 250 hos­
pitales en los Estados Unidos
usan este robot como parte de su
limpieza, incluyendo Texas Health
Presbysterian Hospital en Dallas,
donde el primer paciente de ébola
en los Estados Unidos fue tratado.
En la Ciudad del Álamo, Univer­
sity Health System y South Texas
Veterans Health Care System usan
este tipo de aparato para esterilizar
cuartos con pacientes de enferme­
dades contagiosas.
Según estudios realizados en el
Cooley Dickinson Hospital en Mas­
sachusets, el robot ha demostrado
ser eficaz.
En enero del 2011 el hospital
empezó a usar el robot como parte
de su limpieza. Después de un año,
la taza de infecciones adquiridas en
el hospital había reducido por un 53
porciento.
Stibich agregó que contante­
mente está en comunicación con
líderes de hospitales para mejorar
la eficacia del robot y así ayudar a
que hospitales enriquezcan el nivel
de cuidado médico.
Los síntomas del ébola son fiebre
repentina y alta, debilidad intensa
y dolor muscular, de cabeza y de
garganta, seguidos de vómitos, dia­
rreas, erupción cutánea, funciones
renal y hepática alteradas e intensas
hemorragias internas y externas.
La tasa de mortalidad es muy
alta.
El nombre de la enfermedad
Ébola es el nombre del río próximo
a la aldea de Yambuku (República
Democrática del Congo) donde se
detectó el primer brote epidémico
de la enfermedad en 1976, de
manera casi simultánea a otro en
Nzara (Sudán).

Past the bridge on Buena Vista heading towards downtown,
there is an influx of homeless folks that hang around the area.
A great amount of them go to Haven for Hope for shelter, but
many are kicked out due to mental health issues or substance
abuse problems that haven’t been treated.

Familiar face to take over at KLRN

Arthur Rojas Emerson is one
the few individuals who can
dispel the well-known Thomas
Wolfe adage: “you can’t go
home again.”
Earlier this week Emerson
was named CEO of KLRN,
the city’s Public Broadcasting
Service affiliate, a move that
finds one of the city’s better
known behind the scene media
types taking the reins of the San
Antonio’s only locally owned
television outlet.
“This a humbling experience,
and clearly I’m thrilled about
the opportunity, humbled by the
challenge and grateful for the
opportunity to work with such
a talented team of broadcasting
executives, engineers and tech­
nicians who are devoted to the
well-being of the community,”
Emerson told La Prensa.
Everyone who knows Emer­
son can vouch for the experi­
ence and executive knowledge
that he will bring to the table
because he’s Puro San Antonio.
It’s those reasons that he has
an understating of what KLRN
should do.
“It’s a community station,” he
explained. “KLRN is probably
the only locally owned televi­
sion station left and it’s owned
by you, me and all the members
who say yes to KLRN day in and
day out. We have a wonderful
team that has held the station
in check and made it do well
throughout the past year.”

culture strong in terms of new
innovations. In other words he’s
aware that it will be a “we” type
of deal rather than “me.”
Selecting Emerson to the
position of CEO wasn’t an
overnight project. He chaired
the search committee and admits
they were looking at the final 24
candidates and trying to narrow
it down to five. While it wasn’t a
litmus test, they wanted a certain
type of individual to take over
the station.
“We were looking for the
qualities that we needed some­
body that was involved in the
community or could ingrain
themselves in the community
quite readily who had the ability
to raise money,” he said.
At that point in the search
process one of the committee
members said that Emerson fit
the qualifications. He said that

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme
Court refused to review pend­
ing gay marriage bans cases in
five state cases. The decision
invalidated the previous stateenforced bans, and immediately
made same-sex marriages legal

agreed to expedite a case that
could determine whether Texas

Circuit Court of Appeal will rule
in favor of gay marriage.

talked about the responsibilities
such as insuring the station stays
viably strong, financially; add­
ing that the chief duties of any
CEO should include looking at
the bottom line.

Netanyahu: voz suave, palabras fuertes Dying on your terms

Lo primero que
sorprende del
Primer Ministro
de Israel, Ben­
jamín Netanya­
hu, es su suave
Jorge Ramos voz, a veces in­
audible. Hay que
acercarse para oírla. Pero eso con­
trasta con sus fuertes palabras y con
sus posiciones políticas tan duras.
No cede ni en un solo argumento.
Venía de prisa. Acababa de llegar
de Washington, donde se reunió
con el presidente Barack Obama.
Pidió que se bajara la temperatura
del aire acondicionado en la suite
del Hotel Palace y comenzó la en­
trevista. ¿Es cierto que no se lleva
bien con el presidente Obama?
“Somos como una vieja pareja”, me
dijo. Se han reunido más de una do­
cena de veces. “Tenemos nuestras
diferencias... (pero) estamos de
acuerdo en muchas más cosas que
en las que no acordamos”.
Sobre Irán no hay total acuerdo.
A Israel le preocupa que las actua­
les negociaciones internacionales
lideradas por Estados Unidos le
permitan a Irán desarrollar algún
tipo de capacidad nuclear. “Irán ha
prometido destruir a Israel y quiere
desarrollar bombas atómicas”, me
dijo, “naturalmente como primer
ministro estoy preocupado, porque
la historia no le va a dar al pueblo
judío una segunda oportunidad”.
Netanyahu venía preparado
para defenderse y, luego, para
pasar a la ofensiva. El presidente
palestino, Mahmud Abás, acusó
recientemente a Israel en la ONU de
“crímenes de guerra” y de “genoci­
dio” por la muerte de más de 2,200
palestinos en Gaza, incluyendo

se cometieron fueron realizados por
Hamas”, me respondió, pasando
al contraataque. Netanyahu llegó
a la entrevista con una fotografía.
Mostraba a un hombre encapu­
chado, identificado por él como
un terrorista de Hamas, a punto de
ejecutar a un palestino arrodillado.
“ISIS decapita personas”, me dijo,
refiriéndose al grupo islámico que
controla partes de Siria e Irak. “Y
Hamas les pone una bala en la ca­
beza. Pero para las víctimas y sus
familias, el horror es el mismo”.
Le comenté que había escuchado
su discurso en Naciones Unidas y
que me pareció carente de cualquier
esperanza para la paz. No había
tenido ni un solo gesto o palabra
para buscar nuevas negociaciones
con los palestinos, le dije. “Al
contrario”, respondió. “Creo que
debemos tener dos Estados: uno
para el pueblo judío y otro para el
pueblo palestino... Debemos tener
un mutuo reconocimiento, pero
también acuerdos de seguridad para
evitar que grupos como Hamas o
ISIS tomen el control de las zonas
que evacuemos en Cisjordania”.
Netanyahu se quedó pensando un
momento y luego, viéndome a los
ojos, me dijo. “¿Usted pregunta si
queremos la paz? Déjeme decirle
algo. Yo he ido a guerras. Me hirie­
ron en una operación para rescatar
a civiles de un avión secuestrado
por terroristas. Casi me ahogo en el

Me quedaba tiempo para una
pregunta más. Se acercaba el Yom
Kipur, la conmemoración religiosa
anual en a que los judíos se ar­
repienten de sus pecados y piden
perdón. ¿Qué había hecho mal que
necesite que lo perdonen? pregunté.
“Necesito muchos Yom Kipurs
para eso”, me dijo el hombre de la
voz suave, apenas esbozando una
sonrisa.

The reported immigration problems in Karnes County
The recent
surge in im­
migration
across our
border with
Mexico has
been heart­

- families,
sometimes unaccompanied chil­
dren, have fled their homes to es­
cape escalating violence in Central
America.
Earlier this month, the heartbreak­
ing turned to the horrific.
The San Antonio Express-News
reported that, “Numerous women
detained at an immigrant jail in
Karnes County allege staff there
sexually assaulted or harassed them
in front of their children.”
According to the report, lawyers
for the detainees have stated that
guards and other staff removed “fe­
male detainees from their cells late
in the evening and early morning
hours for the purpose of engaging
in sexual acts in various parts of the
facility.”
If these allegations of sexual as­
sault are true, it is abhorrent. The
United States of America has long
been, and should continue to be, a
beacon of hope for the rest of the
world, not a place of despair. This
is the nation where immigrants have
historically come to build better
lives and find freedom not possible
elsewhere.
There is no excuse for sexual as­
sault. These women fled unbearable
violence from their home countries.
Many faced sexual violence and
extortion on their journey north
through Mexico, and it is unaccept­
able for them to continue to suffer
here in Texas.
A full and thorough investigation
by the federal government into these
allegations is warranted. Those
who have caused these immigrant
women and children harm must be
held accountable - there must be
consequences.
We must hold others, beyond
the walls of that detention facility,
accountable as well. This situation
is yet another tragic symptom of
dysfunction in Washington, D.C.
For too long, political parties have
been preoccupied with making the
other side look bad, instead of doing
right by families. Some politicians
have exploited this situation and
fanned the flames of fear against
immigrants who simply sought to
save the lives of themselves and
their children.
Those who use extreme rhetoric
about immigrants fleeing violence
should pause and ponder whether
their words are perpetuating such
mistreatment of women.
We need respect for immigrants
and their families. We need to hold
those accountable who would do
women and children harm. We need
comprehensive immigration reform,
and we need it now.
Unfortunately, the Karnes County
detention center is not licensed
under Texas state child welfare
standards, making state oversight
impossible.
However, I plan to continue to
ensure that Texas families, those
born here and those that immigrate
here, are safe. As we have done with
border security and VA issues, I will
urge my colleagues to investigate
this matter for any possibility of state
oversight and intervene if necessary.
Texans know when neighbor
needs to help neighbor, and we will
not turn our backs on these fami­
lies who are in desperate need of
love, respect, and security. Texans
won’t stand idly by, while mothers
- whether they are here legally or
not - are assaulted.
The ticket to more business, growth
Six years
ago, AT&T
announced
that it would
move its cor­
porate head­
quarters from
Ron Nirenberg San Antonio
to Dallas, tak­
ing with it hundreds of good-paying
jobs and what was then one of the
crown jewels of our city’s business
community.
One of the reasons AT&T gave
for their relocation was San An­
tonio’s airport. Too few direct
flights between San Antonio and
major cities made it too difficult
for AT&T to stay connected with
its international offices and clients.
If so many San Antonio flights stop
in Dallas, why not save time and
money by cutting out the first leg
of the trip?
Non-San Antonians, and even
some locals, took AT&T’s move
as a sign that San Antonio was
destined to become a bedroom
community, a second-tier Texas
city behind the likes of Dallas,
Houston and Austin.
We could have closed up shop
and resigned ourselves to that
fate—but we didn’t. Given the
growth of our region, we couldn’t.
Just two weeks ago, American
Airlines announced new non­
stop flights between San Antonio
and Miami beginning in March.
This news comes on the heels of
announcements from Delta and
Southwest of new direct service
to Los Angeles and New Orleans,
respectively.
These three additions will bring
the total number of nonstop destina­
tions reachable from San Antonio
to 36. The City’s Aviation Depart­
ment wants to see that number
continue to climb. Aviation has
partnered with the San Antonio
Chamber of Commerce to try to
make it happen.
I commend the Aviation Depart­
ment and the Chamber on their
efforts. In fact, I’ve joined them. In
my capacity as Chair of the City’s
Intergovernmental Relations Com­
mittee, I have advocated for FAA
approval of more direct flights from
our airport, including a coveted
connection to Washington, D.C.
We need to look beyond our
borders, too. San Antonio is in a
position to thrive in this global 21st
century, but for that to happen, we
need to be connected to the major
international centers of culture and
commerce, particularly in Central
and South America.
This conversation is about more
than air travel; it’s a fundamental
discussion about how San Anto­
nio’s business community will keep
pace with other major Texas cities.
Improved air travel is just one piece
of the puzzle. Long-term water
security, a comprehensive digital
communications infrastructure
plan and an honest assessment of
our city’s transportation needs are
all necessary if San Antonio is go­
ing to be a city that attracts—and
keeps—business.
Just a Thought: Hispanic Heritage Month
There are
only three
days left in
celebrating
the official
National
Hispanic
Heritage
Steve Walker Month. (Sep.
15 - Oct. 15)
For the past three weeks I have
written about the impact and
surge of Hispanic male and fe­
male candidates alike for various
elected offices for the November
election.
Before the celebration offi­
cially ends for another year, let’s
address the history of National
Hispanic Month and how it came
about in the first place.
In researching statistics and
background information on the
subject, I discovered that His­
panic Heritage Month appropri­
ately began Sept. 15 which is
coincidentally the anniversary
of Independence Day for five
Latin American countries. They
include: Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, and Ni­
caragua. We did learn in history
class that Mexico declared its
independence on Sept.16, while
we now know that Chile did so
on Sept. 18.
This year’s Diez y Seis was also
the 40th birthday celebration of
San Antonio’s Castro brothers,
HUD Secretary and former Mayor
Julian Castro and younger brother
by three minutes, former State
Rep. and currently Congressman,
Joaquin Castro. I was fortunate
to take photos at that event at the
Tobin Center that drew over 400
well-wishers.
Not everyone in the community
is aware that the term Hispanic
or Latino, as defined by the U.S.
Census Bureau, refers to Puerto
Rican, South or Central Ameri­
can, or other Spanish culture or
origin, regardless of race.
I also checked the 2010 Cen­
sus form that revealed people
of Spanish, Hispanic or Latino
origin could identify themselves
as Mexican, Mexican American,
Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban,
or “another Hispanic, Latino, or
Spanish origin.”
According to that Census, 50.5
million people or 16 percent of
the population were of Hispanic
or Latino origin. That was a sig­
nificant increase from the 2000
Census, which registered the
Hispanic population at only 35.3
million or 13 percent of the total
U.S. population. As time goes on
it is estimated by 2040 Hispanics
will be the majority population in
the United States.
Honoring the contributions that
Latinos have made to our country
with the annual month long cel­
ebration, it should be noted that
it actually began 26 years ago
when President Ronald Reagan
signed the proclamation to make
it official as Hispanic Heritage
Month on Aug.17, 1988.
However, history tells us that
its inception stretches back far­
ther to the sixties. Congress first
passed a resolution to celebrate
Hispanic heritage at the national
level as a weeklong event on
Sept. 17, 1968 during President
Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency.
It was 20 years later that President
Ronald Reagan stretched the cel­
ebrations to a full month.
In the past two years of writing
“Just a Thought” for La Prensa, I
have had the privilege of writing
columns on local Hispanics who
have and continue to make a sig­
nificant difference in the lives of
residents of San Antonio alone.
What makes it special for me is
that all those Hispanics I write
about, I know personally and
have first-hand knowledge of their
contributions to our community in
one facet or another.
I have been blessed to write
columns about local icons like
former Mayor Henry Cisneros,
internationally acclaimed singer
Dr. Patsy Torres, former Council­
woman Maria Berriozabal, for­
mer State Senator Dr. Joe Bernal,
activist Jaime Martinez, former
Congressman Charlie Gonzalez,
Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Di­
rector of Selective Service Larry
Romo, and of course La Prensa
Publisher Tino Duran who allows
me to write about Hispanic icons
in the Sunday edition among other
topics.
As always, I write “Just a
Thought.”

One of the questions that may
always remain an unknown to just
about everyone and many may not
want to know is when they are
going to die.
If you are Brittany Maynard
that is a question to which she
already knows the answer. She
knows the answer because she
plans to take her life on November
1, 2014.
In some circles it is called as­
sisted suicide. Euthanasia is the
accepted term; however, others
call it dying with dignity.
Regardless of where one stands
on the matter, the subject does
create debate among individuals
when the conversation goes there.
The questions of ethics in the
medical community come to
mind; after all there is The Hip­
pocratic Oath physicians take.
The religious aspect also comes
in to play. The Catholic Church
teaches that suicide is wrong and
considered a grave or serious, a
mortal sin.
The arguments against suicide
or for suicide will always be there.
Changing the other person’s mind
is almost impossible.
We’re not here to say what is
right and what is wrong it’s just
that Brittany Maynard’s suicide
has gone viral on the social net­
work since it first appeared on
Facebook.
Her decision to end her life was
not something she had planned
on doing. If fact, the decision
weighed heavily on her and her
family especially her husband.
At the beginning of the New
Year physicians told Ms. May­
nard they had discovered a brain
tumor. While devastating news,
they felt she could live another
10 years.
What physicians didn’t know at
the time they made the diagnosis
was how aggressive a tumor was
in her. The 10 year prognosis had
dwindled down to a few months.
Her decision to die with dignity
came when she opted not to fight
the disease and the anticipated
pain when something like this
attacks your body.
Brittany and her husband have
decided to move to Oregon where
doctor assisted suicide, death with
dignity, is legal.
The young woman has chosen
November 1, 2014 as the day
she wants to end her life. Her
husband’s birthday is October 30.
In the video making the social
media rounds she explains what
she feels her final moments of
life will look like, “I plan to be
surrounded by my immediate
family, which is my husband and
my mother and my step-father
and my best friend, who is also
a physician. I will die upstairs,
in my bedroom that I share with
my husband, with my mother and
my husband by my side and pass
peacefully with some music that
I like in the background.”
Macabre? Who’s to say?

mientras el mundo observa in­
crédulo cómo una epidemia pu­
diese convertirse en pandemia en
un dos por tres.
Lo que más preocupa es que el
virus del ébola se expande de una
forma nunca antes vista y la res­
puesta global es lenta, y peor, no
dicen toda la verdad, quizás para
no causar pánico, pero tenemos el
derecho de saberla.
La Organización Mundial de la
Salud –OMS- señala que el ébola
no ha sufrido mutaciones, sin
embargo, expertos ajenos a los
intereses políticos recuerdan que
esta infección es como una “ruleta
genética”; es un virus ARN, lo que
equivale a que se copia y tiene una
o dos mutaciones cada vez que
alguien lo contrae y la transmisión
por vía respiratoria puede suceder.
Cuando el liberiano Thomas
Duncan subió a un avión con rum­
bo a Dallas, habían muerto más de
3 mil personas en África. Él mintió
cuando le hicieron las preguntas de
seguridad al salir de su país y por
esa razón, muchos dudan: ¿Fue un
plan para sobrevivir pensando que
los gringos tenían mejor atención
médica?, o ¿maliciosamente quiso
propagar la enfermedad, como
efectivamente puede estar ocu­
rriendo? Finalmente murió.
Ya se sabe cómo se contagió el
liberiano, ayudando a una mujer
embarazada a buscar un hospital.
Lo que sorprende es la forma fácil
como ingresó a territorio estado­
u­nidense, comprobando la vul­
nerabilidad que hay ante posibles
ataques biológicos del terrorismo.
Frente a esto el margen de
seguridad es mínimo. Desde me­
diados de 2013, la CIA y el Depar­
tamento de Defensa han recibido
información sobre esa probabi­
lidad y lo han advertido, pero la
burocracia se niega a creerlo.
Con el ébola hay una cadena
de errores: falló el servicio de
inmigración y control de adua­
nas; se equivocaron los médicos
del hospital de Dallas, que con
los antecedentes mortíferos en
África, mandaron al liberiano a

Disfrutando de música, juegos
y comida, cientos de sananto­
nianos participaron en el evento
anual Noche Nacional Contra el
Crimen en el gimnasio Riverside,
al sureste de la ciudad el pasado
martes.
El evento tuvo como propósito
fomentar la seguridad en los
vecindarios de la ciudad y luchar
contra el crimen y el abuso de
drogas.
Vecinos, organizaciones lucra­
tivas, grupos cívicos, negocios
locales y funcionares públicos se
reunieron en diferentes lugares de
San Antonio como una manera de
hacer un frente contra el crimen
y las drogas. Esta reunión se rea­
liza en todo los Estados Unidos
usualmente en agosto u octubre.
Con motivo de celebrar la
Noche Nacional Contra el Cri­
men en San Antonio, Ron Hayes,
fundador de la organización sin
fines de lucro Karma Teens Em­
powered y de Brooks Inner-City
Sports, organizó la reunión entre
vecinos en el sureste de la ciudad.
Este es el séptimo año que
Hayes organiza el evento para
la vecindad de esta área de San
Antonio.
“Lo hago para que los vecinos
se conozcan”, explicó Hayes.
“En muchos casos no sabemos
quién vive al lado de nosotros,
así es que esta es una buena
oportunidad para que los veci­
nos se conozcan e intercambien
números telefónicos”.
Hayes agregó que la única
manera de cómo combatir el
crimen y el vandalismo en la
comunidad es comunicándose
con vecinos, prestar atención a
situaciones extrañas y reportar
las situaciones inusuales.
Durante el evento, Hayes tam­
bién compartió consejos con los
niños para que se mantengan
seguros y fuera de las manos de

time for the 23rd Annual San
Antonio Herb Market. The Herb
Market returns to the Historic
Pearl Brewery on Saturday, Oc­
tober 18, 2014. Hours are from

The 2014 Herb of the Year is
artemisia, and has been used for
centuries in many cultures. Bible
references “wormwood,” and
indicate it was an herb known for
its bitterness. It was used in many
ways, spanning culinary, orna­
mental and medicinal practices,
but its aromatic leaves are used
primarily for flavoring.
Chef Stephen Paprocki, execu­
tive chef and general manager at
NuStar Energy café, Grill on the
Hill, will focus on artemisia in
his culinary presentation. He will
discuss his views on this particu­
lar herb and sample artemisia tea,
mugwort soup and absinthe ice
cream.
Gee Gee Reid, local chef and

la reciprocidad que han sentido a
través del tiempo con tu amistad.
Cuando tenía 20 años yo juraba
que me sobraban amigos y amigas.
Estaba llena de amor en mi vida y
todas mis amigas eran lo máximo
que existía en mi mundo. Al poco
tiempo, una de ellas se robó mi

That was the message the
mayor shared at the West San
Antonio Chamber of Commerce
2014 Breakfast Friday morning.
The mayor explained that a
main reason to continue that
growth is the deal with the con­
troversial issue of the Vista Ridge
Water project; the largest nonEdwards Aquifer water supply.
Taylor said the importance of
the project is that by 2020 the
pipeline project will bring 16.3
billion gallons of new water from
Burleson County via the Carrizo
and Simsboro Aquifers.
“As we talk about growth, I
think that it’s appropriate. This
is a very important project of our
city,” Taylor said.
She added one of the biggest
concerns that have been raised is
that many are troubled about the
vulnerable households that will
have a difficult time paying for
that basic resource. She admitted
that rates will increase, but that’s
happening across the country.

entrevista telefónica con Efe desde
sus oficinas en Nueva York.
El ejecutivo de medios destacó

primera minoría del país y la de más
rápido crecimiento, la educación
todavía es un tema pendiente.

El Programa Futuro también
ofrece a los jóvenes una red de

“There were very few options.
These people come to us in aw­
ful shape, and they need a lot of
help.”
Twelve years later, there is
help for those battling for longterm recovery. The Center for
Health Care Services (CHCS)
launched the Dr. Dianna M BurnBanks, M.D. CenterCare Clinic:
an innovative, state-of-the-art
primary care clinic — the only
one of its kind in Bexar County.
“People with behavioral health
disorders and challenges with
substance abuse die 29 years
earlier than the average person,”
Leon Evans, president and CEO
of CHCS said. “It’s due to ill­
nesses that were never managed.

In addition, the clinic will offer
medical services such as check­
ups, mammograms, and preven­
tative vaccinations for diabetes,
hypertension and other acute and
chronic diseases will be adminis­
tered. Plans for a pediatrics unit
are in the making as well.
The clinic is expected to have
approximately 1,700 patients
through its doors in the first year
alone. The CenterCare Clinic
will be open Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with
a provider on-call at all times.
“They have lost lives. Their
illness is so painful for family
and friends. They are estranged
from their families. Many be­
come homeless. This program
will allow us to do motivational
engagement and get people
treated, get them into recovery
and regain their lives and rela­
tions with family and friends to
become productive citizens.
“It’s kind of a miracle,” Evans
said.

Caring for yourself when diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another dementia

sociation, the “I Have Alzheimer’s
Disease” section of alz.org offers
information and tools to empower a
growing group of individuals living
in the early stage of Alzheimer’s or
another dementia to live their best
life for as long as possible. Below is
information on taking care of your­
self while living with Alzheimer’s
disease.
People living with Alzheimer’s
disease will experience good days
and bad days, but an emphasis on
living a healthier life can help pre­
pare you to live well and focus your
energies on what is most important
to you. The health benefits associ­
ated with maintaining your physical,
emotional, social and spiritual health
may help improve your daily life.
Living a healthy life with Al­
zheimer’s disease involves examin­
ing the influences that impact your
experience living with dementia. By
educating yourself about the disease,
developing effective coping strate­
gies and planning for the future, you
can create a solid foundation from
which to cope with new challenges
and changes.
Caring for your physical health
Take care of your physical health
with diet and exercise. Adopting a
healthy lifestyle can help you live
well with your diagnosis for as long
as possible. Use these tips to main­
tain your physical health:
• Get regular checkups. Establish
a relationship with a physician you
trust.
• Establish a routine for diet and
exercise.
• Create a care team that under­
stands your physical health needs
and can help you monitor or respond
to any changes that occur.
• Listen to your body! Rest when
you are tired and be mindful of
overextending yourself.
• Drink only minimal amounts
of alcohol.
• Do not change medications and/
or dosages without first checking
with your doctor.
Multiple studies have shown
the benefits of physical activity for
individuals with Mild Cognitive
Impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s.
Research suggests that mild-tomoderate physical activity may help
delay or slow a decline in thinking
skills, reduce stress, possibly help
improve symptoms of depression,
and may even reduce risk of falls.
Some evidence suggests that
exercise may directly benefit brain
cells by increasing blood and oxy­
gen flow. Even stronger evidence
suggests exercise may protect brain
health through its proven benefits
to the cardiovascular system. Talk
with your doctor about how to make
exercise a part of your overall well­
ness plan.
You may want to try a group ex­
ercise class, where you can connect
with others who enjoy similar ac­
tivities. Aerobic exercise, increasing
your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes,
provides the most benefit for physi­
cal and cognitive health. Try vigor­
ous walking, bicycle riding or tennis.
If exercise was a part of your life
before your diagnosis, keep doing
it. An active lifestyle may help pre­
serve your sense of independence
and identity. If you are not an active
person, consider including exercise
as a part of your daily routine. Al­
ways check with your physician be­
fore starting a new exercise routine.
Although a balanced diet has not
been proven as an effective treat­
ment to address symptoms of Al­
zheimer’s, the best current evidence
suggests that heart-healthy eating
patterns, such as the Mediterranean
diet, also may help protect the brain.
A Mediterranean diet includes rela­
tively little red meat and emphasizes
whole grains, fruits and vegetables,
fish and shellfish, and nuts, olive oil
and other healthy fats.
There is no conclusive evidence
that brain exercises can slow or
reverse cognitive decline. However,
learning new information, taking a
class, or challenging yourself to try
a new hobby or activity may help
increase your brain activity. Some
types of mental exercises may have
the added benefit of connecting you
with others socially, which also may
improve your mental health. If you
enjoy mental stimulation or brain
exercises, keep doing them.
Caring for your emotional and
psychological health
Coming to terms with a serious
diagnosis like Alzheimer’s disease
involves embracing changes in
your emotional state. You may
experience unwanted feelings and
emotions, which may be triggered
by your relationships with others,
your experience with stigma or your
frustration with daily changes. One
of the most important things you
can do is talk about your feelings
with someone you trust such as your
spouse, partner, pastor or counselor.
Sometimes a different perspective
can be helpful as you learn to adjust
to living with the disease and cope
with difficult feelings.
At times, your emotional state
and responses may be the symptoms
of Alzheimer’s. You may have
frustration, anger or confusion, and
have no control of your emotions.
As a result, you may be unsure of
yourself around family and friends
or in social situations. Learning to
express yourself can help you cope
with emotional responses, and help
those around you react in the most
appropriate ways.
Caring for your social health
Strong relationships and an ac­
tive social network can have an
impact on your health. Connecting
with others who also are living in
the early stage can be a comforting
and satisfying experience. These
individuals truly understand what
you’re going through. Building a
support network with others like
you can help normalize what you’re
experiencing, reduce the impact of
stigma and improve your quality
of life.
At first, you may be hesitant to
engage in social activities for fear
of making a mistake or having diffi­
culty with communication. Consider
pursuing activities that you enjoy or
that satisfy you so much, that you
can move past your hesitation.
Caring for your spiritual health
A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s dis­
ease or serious illness can inspire
a focus on spirituality and life’s
greater purpose. Enhancing your
spiritual life can help you cope with
challenging feelings, find meaning
in your diagnosis and live your life
more deeply.
Who each of us is at our core is
more than our former jobs, things
we are good at doing or even the
conversations we have with others.
The core of who we are is what we
think of when we talk about the
“self” or our “spirit”. Connecting
with our core being and what is most
significant to us is our spirituality.
Now that you are living with
Alzheimer’s disease, it may feel as
if you are going to lose those things
that give you a sense of who you
are — your job, the things you love
to do, your accomplishments, your
role as a parent or partner, etc. These
represent only parts of who you are.
They have to do with who you are
in relation to something outside of
yourself. Your personal sense of self
comes from within.
Today more than 5 million Amer­
icans, including 330,000 Texans, are
living with Alzheimer’s disease, and
this number increases by one new
case every 67 seconds. For more

Domestic violence increases risk for child abuse at home

October is National Domestic
Violence Awareness Month. Lead­
ing up to the month, the headlines
have been splashed with accounts
of high profile athletes engaging in
abusive behavior with their spouses
and children. The stories have fo­
cused on how the athletic leagues
have disciplined or not disciplined
them for their actions and whether
corporate sponsors should continue
to endorse them or not. What has
not been at the forefront of the dis­
cussion is the affects that domestic
violence has on children.
According to Safe Horizon, “the
largest organization helping victims
of crime and abuse in the United
States,” they state that “every
year, more than 3 million children
witness domestic violence in their
homes and children who live in
homes where there is domestic
violence also suffer abuse and
neglect at high rates (30 percent
to 60 percent).” Consequently,
living in homes where violence
is more common than not, creates
a toxic environment for children.
Toxic stress is a term frequently
used by child welfare advocates
and is defined by the Center on the
Developing Child at Harvard Uni­
versity as, “Toxic stress, it occurs
when a child experiences strong,
frequent, and/or prolonged adver­
sity—such as physical or emotional
abuse, chronic neglect, caregiver
substance abuse or mental illness,
exposure to violence, and/or the
accumulated burdens of fam­
ily economic hardship—without
adequate adult support. This kind
of prolonged activation of toxic
stress can disrupt the development
of brain development and other
organ systems, and increase the
risk for stress-related disease and
cognitive impairment, well into the
adult years.”
Studies indicate when children
are exposed to toxic environments,
such as domestic violence and mal­
treatment; they are more likely to
develop chronic diseases in adult­
hood, such as high blood pressure,
obesity and diabetes, and are more
likely to become dependent on
alcohol and drugs. The American
Psychiatry Association articulates
that domestic violence can have
long-term mental and emotional
effects on the victim and their
children. “Victims can experience
depression and posttraumatic stress
and children are at risk for develop­
mental problems, school difficulties
and aggressive behavior.”
At The Children’s Shelter, we
witness first-hand the physical and
emotional scars children endure
when they are caught in the middle
of domestic violence disputes.
During their stay with us, children
often express feelings of guilt; they
believe they caused the violence. If
left untreated, the feelings of guilt
turn to anxiety, fear and anger
and can manifest themselves into
diagnosable symptoms that label
children and/or require medication
or at the extreme require hospital­
ization. Children who are subject
to abuse and neglect are 6X more
likely to attempt suicide.
With appropriate treatment,
children are able to understand
and accept that it was not their
fault and that they do not have to
repeat the cycle, (abused children
are also 6X more likely to abuse
their own children). Because The
Children’s Shelter’s goal is to end
the cycle of abuse, our staff and
foster parents are trained in traumainformed care treatment models
and work with children to express
their feelings and begin the heal­
ing process. In addition, we have a
Family Strengthening Department
that works alongside parents who
need and want parenting support.
As long as the high rates of domes­
tic violence and child abuse occur
in our community—The Children’s
Shelter will exists to protect chil­
dren and restore their innocence.
Our community needs to become
much more involved and engaged
in the issue of domestic violence.

Buscar ayuda es solución a las
fatalidades por el alcoholismo

En verdad que da gusto cuando
uno de mis “tres” lectores me encara
para decirme la importancia de ha­
cerle frente al alcoholismo por me­
dio del amor a la familia y personal.
El domingo 5 de octubre, durante
mi recorrido en cobertura del de­
porte local independiente que por
espacio de 24 años he venido reali­
zando para La Prensa de San An­
tonio, uno de mis tres lectores –por
decirlo así– dijo sentirse contento
porque La Prensa lo mantiene in­
formado sobre los acontecimientos
deportivos en las ramas del béisbol
sabatino y dominical, así como del
fútbol soccer.
“Me gustó leer de nuevo tu co­
lumna, por favor síguele adelante.
Yo en lo personal tengo cerca del
año que no tomo con los amigos,
como solía hacerlo. Lo importante
de tus testimonios es que escribes
con la verdad en la mano. Tus
experiencias como alcohólico no
las escondes y ello es lo que le da
a uno mayor fuerza para no tomar
bebidas embriagantes y luego tomar
el volante. Te felicito y quienes
deseen seguir tu ejemplo, a ellos
también les irá mejor en su vida”,
expresó el amigo lector.
Al alcohólico nunca le gusta
sacar la cara. Admiten su gusto por
la bebida preferida que lo mantiene
confortable, momentáneamente,
sin medir consecuencia en lo que
pasará cuando el efecto del alcohol
(o drogas ilegales) deje de funcionar
en su ya maltratado cerebro.
Tan solo con tomarse una buena
copa del mejor vino, champaña,
cerveza doméstica o importada, la
persona con ello ya está a punto de
ser atrapada por los tentáculos del
pulpo del alcoholismo y drogas.
Buscar ayuda al problema del
alcoholismo no es nada vergonzoso,
sino todo lo contrario, con ello la
persona estará ayudándose él mis­
mo, previniendo caer en depresión
o en estado de ansiedad. Ambas
enfermedades actúan con diferentes
efectos emocionales. La depresión
se desencadena cuando la persona
deja de satisfacerse consumiendo
su alimento o bebida preferida,
aunado a ello problemas personales
y la falta de cultura para combatirla.
La ansiedad es de mayor peligro,
ya que “invita” al suicidio, ello se ha
visto cuando personas famosas han
tomado la decisión de salirse por la
puerta falsa. No señalaré nombre
de casos que recientemente hemos
visto en los medios informativos.
Quienes deciden quitarse la vida.
Esto ha sido porque nunca admi­
tieron buscar ayuda en la ciencia
médica o en el seno de la familia.
En lo personal, padezco de an­
siedad; sin embargo, la controlo
con medicamento prescripto por
mi doctor de cabecera. Debería
de tomar doble porción de lo asig­
nado diariamente, sin embargo los
15 años que llevo sobrio me han
bastado para reducir a una pastilla
diaria.
La medicina que tomó es una
droga controlada. Cuando tengo
que ir a la farmacia a recogerla,
el farmacéutico en turno me pide
identificación personal. Luego en su
libro de récords estampa el nombre
del medicamento, la fecha, domi­
cilio y hora en que la recogí. Estos
datos se le tiene que proporcionar
como información concreta a la
Drug Enforcement Administration
(DEA), que es la agencia depen­
diente de Departamento de Justicia
de los Estados Unidos que controla
y regular el consumo de “drogas
controladas”.
Si no hubiese buscado ayuda
médica, otro sería el cantar, ya que
mi alcoholismo data desde la edad
de los siete años.
Dejé de tomar bebidas alco­
hólicas a la edad de 45 años, todo
gracias a que fui apresado por con­
ducir manejando bajo la influencia
del alcohol. Por dicha ofensa, la
policía me llevó al tribunal donde
se me juzgó por segunda vez con
el tradicional DWI (Driving While
Intoxicated).
La sentencia que recibí no me
dejó para más que topar con duro
y, tras cumplir con la sentencia que
el fiscal y juez me impusieron, fue
la mejor medicina que me ayudó a
dejar de una vez por todas tomar con
los dizque amigos, porque cuando
estuve “torcido” nunca me dieron
ayuda moral. Mi esposa, cada vez
que hacía pagos a la Corte, me
reclamaba que ese dinero mejor lo
hubiéramos aprovechado en gastos
del hogar o cuando menos abrirle
una cuenta a nuestro hijo para cuan­
do él asistiera al colegio.
Sin embargo, tras cumplir con
mi sentencia, continué visitando los
programas de rehabilitación, con
asistencia a un par de sesiones en
Alcohólicos Anónimos. Posterior­
mente, atendiendo reuniones con un
grupo especial independiente que es
el que me ha respaldado a salir ade­
lante, enfocado en proporcionarle
ayuda al individuo que se encuentra
cumpliendo programas ordenados
por la Corte; ya que muchos de
ellos no acuden a sus respectivos
programas y se olvidan de hacer
pagos en sus respectivas multas,
faltas que posteriormente los pone
de nueva cuenta tras las rejas.
“Señor Franco, fíjese que mi
esposo anoche llegó bien tomado
y me despertó para que le diera
dinero ya que había contratado los
servicios de una grúa que con todo
y auto lo trajo a casa. Su decisión
de llegar a casa en grúa dijo que la
hizo porque una vez leyó uno de sus
testimonios en el que usted sugería
que si se emborrachaban no mane­
jaran, llamaran un taxi o hasta una
grúa para así evitarse ser detenidos
y sufrir las consecuencias… gracias
por todo lo que usted hace, nada de
malo tienen sus confesiones por
decir que es un alcohólico. Que siga
adelante y Dios lo cuide”, me ex­
presó recientemente una mujer con
quien nunca había tenido conver­
sación alguna. Ella suele acudir a los
partidos de fútbol dominical donde
su esposo patrocina un equipo en
las canchas de Levi Strauss Park.

The interview process for
the manager's job for the Texas
Rangers began Tuesday as the
club interviews pitching coach
Mike Maddux and Triple A
manager Steve Buechele.
The club still has one more
internal candidate to interview
in interim manager Tim Bogar.
Sunday Texas general manager Jon Daniels said the club
would interview around four
or five external candidates,
but hadn't made contact with
any of them at that time. That
was before Minnesota fired its
manager Ron Gardenhire. Gardenhire has ties to the area as he
grew up in Oklahoma and went
to college at the University of
Texas.
This is the second job managing job Buechele has interviewed for. He had a phone
interview for the Houston job
at A.J. Hinch got Monday.
Maddux has been the pitching coach for the Rangers since
2008. Buechele, who spent the
majority of his playing career
with the Rangers, had managed
in the Texas system for the last
six years.
Daniels said he'd like to have
a manager in place by the week
of Oct. 22 but that there was no
timeline.
Bogar managed the Rangers
the final 22 games after Ron
Washington's resignation and
the club went 14-8 under him.
Bryce Petty talks hurdles, Texas 'trash' talk, schedule critics

Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty
narrowly missed an invitation to
New York City for the Heisman
Trophy presentation a year ago,
but in 2014, he's the Big 12's best
hope to win the trophy, which
would give the Bears a second
Heisman in four years.
A back injury and quiet early
schedule have kept him off the
Heisman radar thus far, but a big
day against Texas on Saturday
might get the Heisman train
rolling. It'll also be the Bear's
toughest test to this point in 2014
by far. Petty took some time this
week to sit down with Fox Sports
Southwest and chat about a variety
of subjects, like that schedule,
Texas' penchant for trash talk and
the Bears' impressive personnel
around him.
First things first: Take me
through the hurdle the other
night.
Bryce Petty: (Laughs). It's kind
of funny. A couple games ago, I
was like, 'Man, I really want to
hurdle somebody. I want to know
what it's like.' But I was thinking
in my head, 'Knowing me, I'd
probably clip his helmet and go
over him and it'd just look awful.'
But anyways, I just kind
of ran up to him and when it
happened, it happened. When
you're out there, you just play.
You kind of do what you were
born to do. I was out there, we
were just playing and it kind
of just happened.Did you hear
from any coaches after it?
Petty: They were all kind of
laughing about it. A couple of
them were saying I've got to pull
my trail leg through. Which, I was
never a hurdler, so I don't even
know what that means. If I had
landed it, it would have been a lot
better, but it was still fun.
You guys got Corey (Coleman) back last week. Obviously,
Antwan (Goodley) was back.
How would you describe this
group of receivers when it's at
full strength?
Petty: They're outstanding.
When everybody's back, man,
we're gellin' and I've got a lot of
athletes out on the field. My job
is a lot easier when they're all
out there. I thought it was great
for our young guys to step up,
Davion Hall and KD and those
guys stepped up. Now, they've all
got game experience so it's about
just being able to work them in
because they're all dynamic. They
can all do things that are special.
When you've got all those guys
clicking, one guy gets tired, the
other comes up and the other's
just as good, so it's kind of, take
your pick.
Back when you chose to come
to Baylor, Art sold you on his
vision. Why did you believe it?
Petty: It was just the way he
said it. There's certain people that,
when they talk and they way they
say it and look at you, there's such
conviction in what they're saying.
And he has that conviction. He
has a charisma about him that was
just like, man, this guy's serious.
He's for real. And he's got such
an attitude about him to prove everybody wrong. He's always got a
chip on his shoulder and that kind
of thing is contagious.
When you've got somebody
who wants to work hard all the
time and is always pressing to be
the best and wants to be the best,
that kind of thing is contagious.
So as a competitor and a person,
I feel like my attitude and the way
I think is kind of the same thing,
so it just kind of clicked for both
of us.
When you think back to him
talking about winning the Big 12
and being a force in the league,

The Silver & Black NBA franchise recently were awarded Top
Honor for the third time. San
Antonio Spurs is the only franchise to rank Top 10 every year
since ESPN introduces its annual
survey in 2003.
The Spurs were named the
best franchise in ESPN The
Magazine’s 12th annual Ultimate
Standings survey, which ranks
in order all 122 teams from the
NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB. The
Silver & Black placed second in
last year’s rankings.
The Spurs ranked first overall in four categories that were
part of the judging process to
determine the best overall sports
franchise: ownership (honesty and
loyalty to core players and to the
community), coaching (strength
of on-field leadership), players
(effort on the field, likability off
it) and fan relations (courtesy of
players, coaches and front offices
toward fans and how well a team
uses technology to reach them).
ESPN The Magazine’s Ultimate Standing survey rates
all 122 teams from the NBA,
NFL, NHL and MLB in order,
based on a weighted average of
scores in eight areas: fan relations
(23.9%), title track (19.1%), players (13.9%), ownership (11.3%),
stadium experience (10.2%),
“bang for the buck” (5.4%) and
coaching (2.5%).

Maddock Douglas, opinion research firm NetReflector, and Oregon’s Warsaw Sports Marketing
Center, ESPN polled more than
101, 000 fans to determine what
they want most in return for the
emotion, money and time invested
in their teams. ESPN combined

what's it like to be living it at
this point?
Petty: You know, honestly, David, last year is last year. It's great to
sit on it and know we've got the belt,
but at the same time, that belt is up
for grabs this year. So we're going
to go attack it and go get it just like
everybody else is.
It's great to know we can do it,
because that's a big thing, too. Just
that confidence level of knowing,
'Hey, we can play with anybody in
this league.'
So be honest with me: In the
last five months, how much talk
has there been amongst the team
about a certain linebacker from
Texas and any of his comments.
Petty: (Laughs). David, you're
trying to catch me here and I can't
let you do that. Our job as players is
not to talk about it or tweet about it
or to do anything else but just play.
That's what we're here to do. I can
guarantee none of us are English
majors, so we're not here to write.
Our job is to play football and that's
what we're here to do. We're not
going to concern ourselves with
that sort of thing. We don't have any
added motivation because he said
that, we already had motivation to
begin with. So nothin' there.
What do you think when you
hear criticisms of you guys' nonconference schedule?
Petty: That stuff to me is funny,
because it's out of our control. None
of us made the schedule. It's not like
we had a team poll and picked who
we want to play. Our job is to dominate anybody who's on the schedule.
If they're on the schedule, it's our job
to win and dominate.
It's the same thing every year;
everyone always talks about our
schedule like another 100 schools
in the nation don't do the same exact
thing. It's just because we're Baylor
that people get all upset about it.
Sure, there's four or five schools
in the nation who are playing each
other out of conference, tough nonconference games and that's great.
That's them. We're still Baylor. Our
money is putting points up on the
board and keeping their points off
the board. That's what our defense
has done a great job of this year.
That's what our offense has done a
great job of this year. So, it doesn't
matter who we play. Our job is to
win and to dominate, so that's what
we're going to try to do.
You mentioned you don't pick
the schedule by a team poll, but if
you had to guess and somebody
came to you and said "Here's
team X from a Power 5 Conference" and the team did vote, what
do you think the vote would be if
you chose to play them or not out
of conference?
Petty: I think I speak for everybody when I say we want to play
the best. We feel we're the best and
we want to play the best. We're not
scared of anybody. We're not worried about playing good people.
That's not it at all. I have no doubt
in my mind, given an opportunity
to play big name people, that's who
we'd pick, to play those people.
But again, we don't have that
choice, so all we've got to do is
dominate the teams we do play.
What have you made of what
Shock and Devin and Johnny
have done? How would you assess
the backs so far this year?
Petty: I thought we saw the
Shock Linwood from last year on
Saturday night. That's the guy that
makes people miss, that has yards
after contact. That's not to say he
wasn't Shock before, but it was a different kind of Shock and that's going
to really help us down the road.
I'm going to say it right now: He's
one of the best running backs in the
nation. He really is. He's outstanding. His balance is unbelievable and
the cool part about Shock is he's got
great people that compliment him.
Johnny Jefferson is a guy that is a
big play away every time he touches
the ball and is still learning. So, he's
there. We're getting Devin back,
so he'll be juiced up, ready to go. I
guess that's not the right word to say:
Amped up. He's not juicing. But
he's extremely dynamic, a big guy,
220, 220-plus that game run a 4.4.
So any time you've got breakaway
speed in a guy that big, it's a game
changer, and to be honest, all three
of them are.
Have you heard from Robert
(Griffin III) much since he went
down earlier this year?
Petty: I haven't much. I texted
him after the injury and just said,
"Praying for you" and that's about
it. That kind of thing is hard to see,
because you've grown up with that
guy. I love him to death and I want
the best for him. I hate that, because
he's about as strong a competitor as
you could possible have, so I know
he wants to be out there. It's tough
being hurt and it's unfortunate
how it happened, but he'll bounce
back. He always does and he'll be
ready go.

Respect life month at heart of
Catholic social teaching
Today’s Catholic
As Christians we believe that
life is so sacred that God could
not allow it to be defeated by
death. Each of us are called to
preserve life and the spirit of all
people. At the heart of Catholic
Social Teaching is the belief that
the life and dignity of the human
person is central to who we are
and how we live.
The theme for this year’s Respect Life Month is “Each of Us
is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation.” We consider it a tragedy
that history is marred with the
loss and destruction of artistic
masterpieces created by divinely
gifted men and women. While
these lost works leave us with
a grieving over the loss of such
masterpieces, certainly their destruction pales before the senseless loss of human life that stains
human history. Since the legalization of abortion more than 55
million innocent lives have been
destroyed, each of them a mas-
terpiece of God’s creation. While
we are called to mourn the pain of
this unimaginable holocaust, we
must realize that this represents
an incomplete picture of the loss
of life and human dignity that sadly
defines our society’s frightening
indifference to the precious gift of
life that threatens the weak, voiceless and marginalized.
We live at a time that sees,
almost daily, assaults on our right
and freedom to follow our most
profoundly held belief in the respect for every human life. This
invasion of our conscience is
demonstrated in many ways. While
access to healthcare can be a
moral response to human need,
it attacks life and human dignity
when people of faith are forced to
fund medications that can cause
abortions. We live in a culture that
defines quality of life as being
equal to productivity, advocating
the legalization of assisted suicide
and euthanasia as a “compassionate” solution, when it really devalues life because it does not meet
society’s distorted measure of life’s
true value and ignores the potential
and power of God’s grace.
Pope Francis continually teaches
us that to be “Pro Life” is not limited to fighting against abortion,
even though it remains a high
priority. He proclaims repeatedly
that policies and actions that rob
people of their hope, dignity, the
essentials for living a decent life
as well as erode the environment
that sustains this planet are all
“Pro Life” issues that confront us.
In his “Day for Life Greeting,” the
Holy Father reflects the breadth
of Catholic teaching on life.
“Even the weakened and most
vulnerable, the sick, the old, the
unknown and the poor are masterpieces of God’s creation, made
to his own image, destined to the
utmost reverence and respect.” The
Holy Father is united in the spirit of
the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin
as he helps us to see that there is a
“life connection between “peace,
abortion, civil rights, euthanasia and
justice for the dispossessed and the
disabled.”
He is telling us that:
When we feed the hungry, life is
given and preserved;
When we quench the thirst of
those who are vulnerable and oppressed, justice brings their sprits
to life; and
When we heal the sick and suffering, whether it be from illness or the
hopelessness of poverty, we bring
them life by sharing the abundant
love of God.
Jesus commands us to “love one
another.” That means human dignity
and respect for life cannot be defined
only in the first person and expressed
in terms like “My dignity and My
rights.” No, Jesus said, “Love your
neighbor as yourself.” Obeying this
commandment we affirm that life
is not private, it is a gift given to
us by God to protect, preserve and
respect in recognition that we all are
his children. Therefore, as people
of faith and Disciples of Christ, we
must share the love of Christ with
each person.
We are all called to be pro life,
living in awe and respect for all
of God’s creation, especially His
masterpiece ... the human person.
Catholic Charities honors Chief
Justice Catherine M. Stone

Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. honored Chief Justice Catherine M.
Stone of the Fourth Court of Appeals with The Lifetime of Faith
and Service award at a luncheon
held at The Plaza Club on Oct. 1.
Justice Stone has served on the
Fourth Court of Appeals since
1994. She is a distinguished
member of the community and
Catholic Charities is honored
by her commitment to the organization. She currently serves
on Catholic Charities’ Board of
Directors and is involved in both
the Legal Services and Social
Enterprise advisory committees.
With The Lifetime of Faith and
Service Award, Catholic Charities looks to honor a person or
persons who respond to the needs
of the people of San Antonio and
demonstrate a commitment to
strengthening the communities
which comprise San Antonio and
the surrounding areas.
As the name of the award
suggests, the honoree should
demonstrate a lifetime of faith
and service.
Each year, a group of board
members form a committee to
determine the honorees and organize an event in honor of the
award recipient.
The committee members nominate and vote on the honorees,
whose name or names are then
recommended to the Archbishop
of San Antonio for final approval.
At the luncheon, the welcome
was given by Dr. Mitch Finnie,
chairman of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities, and
the invocation was led by Father
Jim Barlow, pastor of St. Luke
Church.
An overview of Catholic Char-
ities was presented by J. Antonio
Fernandez, president/CEO of the
organization, and Chief Justice
Stone was introduced by Jo Chris
Lopez, a shareholder with Langley & Banack.
In her comments, Stone discussed how her Catholic upbringing and faith has impacted
her life.
She is the second oldest of
five girls, raised in poverty by a
single parent. At a very early age,
Chief Justice Stone realized that
education would be her escape
from an abusive home life. She
left home during her junior year
of high school and worked to earn
a scholarship to Assumption College in Worcester, Mass, where
she graduated cum laude with a
bachelor’s degree in Foreign Affairs in 1976.
After marrying her husband
Tom and making his native Texas
their home, she continued her
studies at St. Mary’s University
School of Law, earning her Juris
Doctorate in 1982. She was admitted to the State Bar of Texas
that same year and, shortly after,
began her legal career as a briefing attorney at the Fourth Court of
Appeals. Chief Justice Stone went
on to practice trial and appellate
law with the San Antonio law
firm of Watkins, Mireles, Brock
and Barrientos and then continued
her appellate practice in her own
firm for three years before being
appointed as an associate justice
of the Fourth Court of Appeals in
1994. In 2008, she was elected as
Chief Justice of the court.
Beyond her professional affiliations, Stone is a devoted
community volunteer, serving as
an Advisory Board Member for
Bexar County Detention Ministries, Advisory Board Member
for the Institute for Interfaith Dialogue, Board Member for Catholic Charities, and Board Member
and volunteer for Seton Home, a
residence for pregnant homeless
teens and their children. She has
also served as a volunteer, lector,
School Council Board Member,
and Pastoral Council President
at St. Luke Church, where she is
a parishioner.
As a result of her difficult
upbringing, Chief Justice Stone
committed herself to serving atrisk women and children.
Chief Justice Stone is the recipient of many awards, including the St. Mary’s Distinguished
Law Graduate Award, St. Mary’s
University Hispanic Law Alumni
Henry B. Gonzalez Award, Archdiocese of San Antonio Leadership Service Award, and others.
She has been married for 38
years to Dr. Tom Stone, a psychologist, and they have three
grown sons; Liam, Nathaniel,
and Jacob.

“Esta mañana iba sentado en el
autobús que me lleva de Alajuela a
San José, cuando entró una jovencita
acompañada de un campesino que,
al parecer, era su abuelo. Ella ocupó
un asiento vacío detrás del mío, y le
dijo a su acompañante que se sentara
en el que estaba a mi lado....
“Este campesino era sumamente
rústico.... Su rostro revelaba una
vida de trabajo rudo bajo el sol, y
su fisonomía no era nada agradable.
Andaba sin afeitarse, con las uñas
sucias, aunque con ropa aseada.
Llevaba un sombrero que acentuaba
su origen. Miraba nervioso a todas
partes y se agarraba del asiento
como el que nunca ha montado en
autobús.... huyéndoles a las personas
del pasillo, se acercaba demasiado
a mí, y casi me tocaba la cabeza
con el ala de su sombrero. Me sentí
molesto.
“En medio de mi desagrado,
sentí un toque del cielo.... Se me
ocurrió que aquel campesino bien
pudiera haber sido uno de mis
abuelos, a quienes nunca conocí, y
que eran campesinos como él, y tal
vez igualmente rústicos. Antonio y
Rafael, que así se llamaban, nunca
salieron del campo, y allí murieron
relativamente jóvenes sin haber
conocido a casi ninguno de sus
nietos. Gastaron su vida bajo el
sol, tras las yuntas de bueyes, y
doblados al surco a fin de mantener
a su familia.
“Ese campesino también podía
ser yo mismo si mis padres no se
hubieran ido a la ciudad antes de yo
nacer. Si hubieran seguido viviendo
en el campo, ahora yo sería un rústico
guajiro cubano....
“En ese momento el autobús pasó
frente a un pequeño cementerio cerca
del aeropuerto. Contemplé las cruces
y pensé en la muerte. Me di cuenta
de que, al final, tanto el cuerpo de
ese rústico campesino costarricense
como el de este guajiro cubano
pulido por las circunstancias de la
vida y bendecido por la misericordia
de Dios van a ir al mismo sitio. Allí
los gusanos no van a preguntar
si sabíamos historia, literatura o
psicología. A ellos no les importa
si uno cultiva la tierra o si escribe
versos. Se lo comen a uno de todos
modos. Allí terminan el desprecio de
los ricos por los pobres y la envidia
de los pobres por los ricos.
“Volví a mirar el rostro del
campesino.... Lo vi un poco
diferente. Era un ser humano a quien
Dios ama. Era un hombre tan valioso
como yo ante los ojos del Creador....
“Llegamos a la capital de Costa
Rica. El autobús se detuvo.... ¡Qué
bueno si me hubiera atrevido a
saludar a aquel hombre de campo!
Me hubiera gustado decirle aunque
fuera: “Me llamo Luis. ¿Cómo
se llama usted?” ...el campesino,
sumamente nervioso, trató de
ponerse de pie.... La jovencita que
lo acompañaba lo sujetó y le dijo:
“Espérese, don Luis”.
“Y don Luis bajó casi de la mano
por quien parecía su nieta. El otro
Luis lo contempló por última vez,
pidiéndole a Dios que bendijera a
su tocayo....”.
Si bien muchos nos identificamos
con el trasfondo y la experiencia que
nos cuenta Luis Bernal Lumpuy en
estas reflexiones, lo que más nos
hace falta es tener esa actitud ante
la vida, que lo lleva a concluir:
“Volví a pensar en Dios, agradecido.
Volví a darle gracias porque me ha
permitido ver, tener y disfrutar de
cosas que no vieron, ni tuvieron
ni disfrutaron mis abuelos ni mis
padres”.

Barrio Barista: A place for café, camarada, y cultura

Making plans with a fellow colleague one lazy Sunday, Barrio
Barista and Bargains seemed like
just another typical coffee shop:
overpriced drinks, lukewarm, prepackaged food and lame service.
But, I was wrong.
There isn’t a place quite like it
anywhere. You can buy an antiquated typewriter, tiara glassware,
meatloaf, barbacoa tacos and a
mocha latte or hot cocoa in one-stop
here. Yes, it’s that cool…and its on
the Westside of town.
Located on 3735 Culebra Rd a
few blocks from St. Mary’s University the coffee shop sticks out like
a sore thumb amidst the typical tire
shops and taquerias.
Decked out with old church pews,
antiques, a bookshelf full of literature and latin-themed art amidst the
walls, it resembles a gathering place
for Chicano activists of the 70s, with
a twinge of Southtown posh minus
the snobbery. Include current events
playing on the multiple television
screens and unlimited wi-fi, and
you’ve got yourself a winner.
The ambience of the area is
memorable, and that’s not even
mentioning the food.
Barrio offers a variety of coffee,
snacks and homestyle meals cooked
to order at a price that will leave your
belly full without burning a hole in
your pocket.
The coffee at Barrio is good,
too. The Cortado, mocha lattes and
espresso are impressive. For those
that like to share, a French Press will
cost you less than $5 and can be split
between two or three people. Oh
yeah, Barrio also has almond milk.
Almond milk on the Westside; let
that sink in for a second.
Hamburgers at Barrio Barista are
to die for. Cooked fresh to order,
the buns are like biting into a wheat
cloud, and the meat is perfectly
seasoned.
My judgement of Mexican food
begins with one thing: How’s the
rice? A prior customer ordered a
brisket guisado. As the rice was
cooking in the olla, the scent of it
made my mouth water and pervaded
the entire shop. The owner caught
me taking whiffs, and brought me
a little serving of it. It was exceptional. Not too dry or overcooked,
the savory flavor of it made me a
little envious of the customer with
the guisado.
Meatloaf is another delish dish.
Normally I’m not one to eat something like that, but this one was a
special exception. Slathered with
ketchup, served with a side of
mashed potatoes, it’s definitely a
comfort food that made me want
to curl up with a blanket and crash
out in the place not that the owner
minds.
Donning a graying ponytail,
overalls, and a big smile, Gilbert
De Hoyos, owner of Barrio Barista
puts other places’ customer service
to shame. He makes it a point to
welcome and get to know every
customer’s story.
“I know I did my job if you leave
with a smile and a empty cup and
plate,” De Hoyos said with laugh.
Already, locals in the neighborhood visit De Hoyos for a hot cup
of joe, a hearty meal, and good conversation. He is a pioneer in what he
hopes will become a new movement
in the Westside in the near future.
“My name is Gilbert. What’s
yours?” De Hoyos said, addressing
a young 4-year-old customer that
walked in with her family. “I see.
Well if you eat all of the taco dad
ordered you, I’ll give you a cookie!”

De Hoyos will talk to you about
everything from mechanics and
coffee to plans for the future and
blessings. Be warned, you may stay
for hours getting lost in conversation
with him or his son, Gilbert Jr.
“There’s is so much potential on
this side of town.” De Hoyos said.
“People shame the Westside for
being poor, but there are so many
good people in this neighborhood.”
Being fairly new, De Hoyos said
business has been a little slow. He
remains hopeful it will pick up soon,
and has big plans for the coffeeshop
in the future, including building a
patio and having live music.
When De Hoyos isn’t manning
the shop, he volunteers at the food
bank. You can visit him at the shop
from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday
through Friday, except for Thursdays. They are open until 6 p.m. on
weekends.

Pianista argentina Lorena Eckell dará recital en S.A.

Lorena Eckell es una de las pianistas latinoamericanas de mayor
proyección internacional de su
generación. Se ha presentado en
recitales y con orquestas de Polonia, España, Francia, Rumania,
Emiratos Árabes, México, Perú,
El Salvador y Argentina.
Fue dirigida bajo las batutas de
Enrique Batiz, Roberto Montenegro, Ligia Amadio, entre otros.
Lorena fue la elegida por el
compositor rumano Marius Herea
para estrenar a nivel mundial su
Concierto para piano y Orquesta,
presentación que se llevó a cabo
en Ploiesti, Rumania.
Marius Herea dijo al respecto:
“Ha sido la mejor elección para
mi obra. Su capacidad es ilimitada (…) Predigo que Lorena
Eckell, quien tiene una personalidad muy diferente a la de su
compatriota Martha Argerich,
se convertirá en 10 o 15 años tan
merecidamente reconocida como
su compatriota”.
En Polonia, Eckell combinó
una presentación de piano solo
y como solista con la Czestochowsda Philarmonia Orchestra.
Asimismo, en Francia y España
se presentó en recitales de piano
solo y junto al violinista Marcelo
Rebuffi, todas ellas con el auspicio de la Embajada Argentina.
Durante la presente temporada
realizó una gira por Emiratos
Árabes junto a la “Premier Music
College of Prague” por Dubai,
Abu Dhabi entre otros Emiratos,
combinando actuaciones con la
mencionada orquesta y presentaciones de piano solo.
Dentro de las numerosas presentaciones que Lorena ha realizado
en América Latina se destaca la
presentación en el XV Festival
Internacional de Piano “Casa
Beethoven”, que se lleva a cabo
anualmente en Monterrey y Torreón (México), en el que participan algunos de los mejores
pianistas de la escena mundial.
En Guanajuato (México) ha
actuado bajo la prestigiosa batuta
del director Enrique Batiz ejecutando el Concierto en Sol de
Ravel.
Lorena Eckell también ha
sido invitada en numerosas oportunidades a actuar en Perú, combinando actuaciones con orquestas
de Lima (destacándose numerosas
actuaciones junto a la Orquesta
Sinfónica Nacional de Perú) y
Trujillo.
Con la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de El Salvador ejecutó el
Concierto para piano y Orquesta
No. 3 de Ludwig Van Beethoven
“con una majestuosa interpretación”, según la crítica.
Dentro de su actividad camarística sobresalen sus actua-
ciones con el violinista Marcelo
Rebuffi, y la actuación junto al
violinista austríaco Wolfgang
David en la “Semana Musical
LLao-Llao” (Bariloche 2009),
con excelente repercusión de
crítica y público.
Carlos Montero, del Diario La
Nación de Argentina, ha comentado respecto a esa actuación:
“La pianista argentina Lorena
Eckell aportó de manera brillante
a través de su criteriosa visión
artística una escuela pianística de
primer orden”.
También ha sido invitada especial en la apertura del Primer
Festival Internacional “Tango
Fusión”, organizado en el marco
de la IV Cumbre de las Américas.
En su país combina regularmente presentaciones piano solo,
solista y de música de cámara en
la ciudad de Buenos Aires, y el
interior.
Grabaciones
Su primer disco fue íntegramente dedicado a obras para
piano de compositores argentinos
tales como Astor Piazzolla, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Guastavino y Juan José Castro (Sello
Fonocal). También ha grabado un
disco junto al violinista Marcelo
Rebuffi, y ha colaborado con el
registro del contrabajista Gerardo
Scaglione.
Actualmente está trabajando
en el proyecto Lorena Eckell/

El escritor francés Patrick Modiano fue galardonado esta semana
con el Premio Nobel de Literatura
2014.
La noticia fue comunicada por
la Academia Sueca y sorprendió
al público pues el nombre del
galo no estaba entre los primeros
mencionados de las apuestas y
proyecciones previas.
El jurado le otorgó el premio
“por el arte de la memoria con el
que ha evocado los destinos humanos más inaprensibles y ha descubierto el mundo de la ocupación”
nazi de Francia, explicó la Academia Sueca en su comunicado.
Peter Englund, secretario permanente de la Academia, aseguró
que el francés es “alguien que
ha escrito muchos libros que se
hacen eco unos a otros”, y que
hablan de “memoria, identidad y
aspiraciones”.
Modiano ha retratado esta preocupación en personajes corrientes
en sus libros.
Fue el escritor no pudo enterarse
de su galardón antes del anuncio,
ya que no lograron contactarlo.
Modiano nació en 1945 en Boulogne-Billancourt, en las afueras
de París, hijo de un hombre de
negocios y una actriz.
Su estreno en el mundo de la
literatura se remonta a 1968 con la
novela “La place de l’étoile” (“El
lugar de la estrella” en español)
y su último libro ha llegado a las
librerías este año bajo el título de
“Pour que tu ne te perdes pas dans
le quartier”.
Una treintena de sus libros
han sido traducidos al español,
entre los que se encuentran “Dora
Bruder”, la historia real de una
adolescente de quince años en
París que se convierte en víctima
del Holocausto.
“Un pedigrí” es la obra que
mejor refleja, según la Academia
Sueca, sus rasgos autobiográficos.
Modiano, que es autor también de libros infantiles y guiones cinematográficos, recibirá el
premio el próximo 10 de diciembre
en Estocolmo (Suecia) de manos
del rey Carlos XVI.
Entre sus galardones anteriores
están el Premio de Novela de la
Academia Francesa en 1972 y el
Premio Goncourt en 1978.
Modiano sucede en el palmarés
a la canadiense Alice Munro, y
recibirá un premio en metálico de
ocho millones de coronas suecas
(1,1 millones de dólares).
El anterior francés en ganar el
Nobel de Literatura había sido
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio,
en 2008.

Isidro por su destacada labor

Esta joven pianista es egresada
del Conservatorio J. J. Castro de
Buenos Aires con las más altas
calificaciones en su instrumento.
Estudió con los maestros Inés
Gómez Carrillo, Aldo Antognazzi
e Iván Citera en Madrid.
Pia Sebastiani ha dicho sobre
ella: “Lorena es una artista de
excelente técnica, muy personal
e imaginativa”.
Dentro de los futuros compromisos de Lorena Eckell se
destacan recitales de piano solo
y música de cámara, así como

domingo 12 de octubre, a las 7:00
p.m., finaliza la fase de selección
de “El Hangar”, del mega-reality
dominical “Yo Soy el Artista”.
El grupo de privilegiados concursados serán anunciados por los
jueces Lucero, Olga Tañón, Laura
Flores, el reconocido coreógrafo
Javier “Poty” Castillo, junto a distinguidas personalidades invitadas.
Esto gracias a su esfuerzo puesto
tras intensas jornadas de pruebas
y desafíos en el canto, baile e
interpretación, para ingresar a la
Escuela de Artistas y competir en
las Galas.
A partir de este domingo, la
audiencia tendrá la oportunidad
de escoger a uno de tres participantes, quien será parte de los 14
seleccionados que pasarán a la
competencia en las galas, donde
interpretarán sus canciones cada
domingo ante el jurado, público
presente y televidentes, quienes al
final determinarán el ganador que
pueda decir “Yo Soy el Artista”.

cuenta de Twitter que será el encargado de realizar la nueva versión de la saga “Ghostbusters”
para el estudio Sony que, en esta
ocasión, estará protagonizada por
mujeres.
Feig viene de dirigir comedias de éxito encabezadas por un
reparto femenino como “Bridesmaids” (2011) y “The Heat”
(2013), que solo en EE.UU.

“Es oficial. Voy a hacer un
nuevo ‘Ghostbusters’ y lo escribiré con Katie Dippold, y sí,

When “Watchdogs” was released it was met with a lot of
criticism mainly due to its shortcomings on promises that the E3
demo had shown the world.
Once you were over the initial
shock and realized that it wasn’t
as bad as people were making
it out to be the game was fun
enough. The story was a little dry
and main character Aiden Pierce
appeared to be on tranquilizers
that made him unable to have any
personality, but other than that the
game was cool enough.
In the latest “Watchdogs Bad
Blood” DLC you play as the eccentric T-Bone Grady following
the events of the “Watchdogs”
campaign.
T-Bone is on the run from
Blume and has no choice but to
start a new life, but is called back
to save the life of a friend.
All the same bells and hacking
whistles are back in play, with 10
brand new full-sized missions that
give a variety of gameplay.
“Bad Blood” even offers new
locations and weapons to an
already large city map and an
already full selection of arsenal.
The thing that this DLC offering has going for it is the new
online co-op mode. This allows
you to team up with a friend on
the streets of Chicago and reek
havoc on all police and electronic
systems.
This was a blaring oversight in
the main game. If I had been able
to team up with a friend through
the “Watchdogs” main campaign
I would have been a lot happier
of a camper.
Hopefully in the inevitable
“Watchdogs 2” we are given more
co-op opportunities. And I’m also
hoping Aiden Pierce is given a
personality.
Playing as T-Bone is a lot of
fun. Those familiar with his character from “Watchdogs” knows
he was one of the better parts of
the story and this time around he
allows players to use a small RC
truck named Eugene to get some
of the missions done.
“Watchdogs: Bad Blood” DLC
is currently available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live
Marketplace.

estoy en un grave problema. Hice
una fiesta con amigos y amigas en
mi casa porque mis papás estaban
de viaje. La fiesta originalmente
era para 10 personas pero se corrió la voz y llegaron como 30. A
eso de la 1 a.m. yo ya no podía
seguir despierta porque había
tomado demasiado. Me subí a
dormir y dejé a mis amigas a
cargo. Además, no le vi mucho
problema a la situación porque
eran solamente amigos.
Al día siguiente, desperté y bajé
para ver cómo había quedado la
casa, y resulta que parecía que
habían estado otras personas diferentes a las que conocía. Sacaron
toda la comida de mi despensa, le
pusieron tequila a la comida del
refrigerador, se robaron botellas
de mi papá, y lo que me tiene más
preocupada, tomaron fotos de mis
calzones sucios.
No sé cómo llegaron a encontrarlos, estoy segura que se
metieron a buscar en toda mi
casa a ver qué encontraban, pero
lo que me tiene deprimida es que
me enteré que hay fotos rondando
entre muchos conocidos míos, y
son de mis calzones.
Ahora nadie me ha hablado ya,
y además me siento muy decepcionada y triste porque pensé que
tenía amigos. No sé qué hacer, y
no sé si seguir hablando con ellos o no. Por lo pronto yo estoy
castigada y además he dejado mi
reputación en el suelo gracias a

problema es que ahora existen
nuevos métodos para llamar más
la atención y afectar a la persona,
en este caso es el celular. Me
temo decirte que esos no son tus
amigos, sino tus amistades de
fiesta, y el hecho de que hayan
tomado fotos de tu ropa interior
y que hayan dejado tu casa en
desorden significa que no tienen
respeto alguno por ti.
Te recomiendo que te alejes
de ellos, no los busques y no los
frecuentes más. Si te llaman para
salir el fin de semana o para saber
cómo estás, tienes dos opciones:
contestarles educadamente y
al mismo tiempo decirles que
tienes muchas cosas que hacer
pero hablarán después; o hablar
con ellos sobre lo que sucedió y

que estás por la falta de respeto
