ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –Marriage & Family
Jesus is encountered in daily life within the domestic church, so that the
Holy Spirit gently blows upon the faith of everyone in the family,
turning sparks to embers and embers to flame!
First Sunday of Lent
A covenant is a formal agreement between two parties. Assuming both
parties enter into the covenant of their own free will, it is a bond that
cannot be broken. As time goes on, that covenant will be tested and its
validity questioned by skeptics, but it will remain if it is real.
God's covenant with his people is real. It began with a promise made to
Noah and was renewed in the person of Jesus Christ. It has been tested
by man through sin and by evil through Jesus' trials in the desert. But
here in 2015, it still remains as strong as ever.
This Lent, take time to rediscover and reflect on this covenant God has
with us. Reclaim your baptism and make it a motivating factor in how
you live your life. Take the opportunity this Lenten season provides to
increase your devotion and spirituality. You will be tested and you will
suffer trials, for life is not always easy. But God has always upheld his
part of the agreement. Now is the time to take our part in this covenant
more seriously.

Jesus’ ministry, even today, is to bring healing and wholeness. He continues it through the Church and through us. In the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from
illness. We all need the healing of our minds, our memories and our
broken relationships. Jesus now uses counselors, doctors, friends or
even strangers in his healing ministry. It is good to identify with the
mother-in-law of Peter. We can ask for the ordinary healing we need in
our own lives. When we are healed, let us not forget to thank Jesus for
his goodness, mercy, and compassion. As Jesus turned toward us, let us
turn to serve others. Our own healing process is completed only when
we are ready to help others in their needs and to focus on things outside
us. Let us communicate with the sick through our cards, telephone calls
and emails. Let us exercise the healing power of Jesus by visiting the
sick and praying for their healing. Let us remember that we need the
Lord’s strength, not only to make ourselves and others well, but to make
ourselves and others whole.
Worship Corner: Prayer for unity and intercessions. The grateful
memory of God’s salvation leads us to make a bold petition, our main
petition at every Eucharist: We pray for unity. “Humbly we pray that,
partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one
by the Holy Spirit” (Eucharistic Prayer II). To this petition we add prayers for the bishop of Rome and for the bishop of the local Church; we
pray for the living and the dead and especially for ourselves, that
through the intercession of the saints we may one day arrive at that table
in heaven of which this table is only a hint and a taste. We look forward
to that glorious day and raise our voices with those of all the saints who
have gone before us as the priest raises the consecrated bread and wine
and offers a toast, a doxology, a prayer of glory to God in the name of
Christ: “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever
and ever.” Our “Amen” to this prayer acclaims our assent and participation in the entire Eucharistic Prayer.

Our LIFE session offered time for reflection, conversation, and prayer.
Begin the EXAMEN in LENT and make it a lifetime practice!
Individual refection time: The Examen
Become aware of God’s presence. Look back on the events of the day
in the company of the Holy Spirit. The day may seem confusing to
you—a blur, a jumble, a muddle. Ask God to bring clarity and understanding.
Review the day with gratitude. Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God. Walk through your day in the presence of God and
note its joys and delights. Focus on the day’s gifts. Look at the work you
did, the people you interacted with. What did you receive from these
people? Pay attention to small things—the food you ate, the sights you
saw, and other seemingly small pleasures. God is in the details.
Pay attention to your emotions. Reflect on the feelings you experienced during the day. Boredom? Elation? Resentment? Compassion?
Anger? Confidence? What is God saying through these feelings? God
will most likely show you some ways that you fell short. Make note of
these sins and faults.
Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the Holy Spirit
to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly
important. It may involve a feeling—positive or negative. It may be a
significant encounter with another person or a vivid moment of pleasure
or peace. Or it may be something that seems rather insignificant. Look at
it. Pray about it. Allow the prayer to arise spontaneously from your heart
Look toward tomorrow. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow’s
challenges. Pay attention to the feelings that surface as you survey
what’s coming up. Are you doubtful? Cheerful? Apprehensive? Full of
delighted anticipation? Allow these feelings to turn into prayer. Seek
God’s guidance. Ask God for help and understanding. Pray for hope.

Elementary Sunday L.I.F.E. (Living In Faith Everyday). We need 1st
grade teacher/help for 9:45am and 4:30pm sessions & 3rd grade teacher/
help for 2:45pm and 4:30pm sessions. Contact Fran Kuzma in the office
to help. (Training provided) The next sessions are Feb. 22nd, March 1st,
8th, and 22nd. Parents are always welcome to sit in and/or help with any
session with their child.
Parents: Year 2 of the Diocesan Evangelization Pastoral Plan is Focusing on the Domestic Church. “The family is, so to speak, the domestic
church. This means that it is in the context of the family that we first
learn who God is and how to prayerfully seek His will for us.”

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2015
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN we began a four part series on the four
marks of the Church. The four marks of the Church are shaped by the
identity the Church has in Christ. The four marks are “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.” We identify these marks every time we recite the Nicene Creed. At our session, we discussed the nature of the Church as
“one” and we talked about our one Baptism, our unity in Jesus Christ, and
our one profession of faith. The teens had the opportunity to discuss their
role as a member of the body of Christ. We concluded by reminding them
of their Baptism and gave each of them a candle to represent our mission
as a member of the one Church, the body of Christ. Our next EDGE/
LIFETEEN session will be held this Monday, February 23, from 6:308:30pm. Our topic: Sanctified—Holy

Operation Rice Bowl—As part of our community's observance of Lent,
we ask all families to participate in Catholic Relief Services' Operation
Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving. Rice bowls

CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond to Assure Shelter) will be at
St Augustine March 21-27. We will be housing 40 men and your help is
needed. Our guests will arrive at 6PM each night and return to Richmond
at 5:30 am We will need food prepared, laundry, hospitality and overnight
assistance, to name just a few of the needs for the week. CARITAS forms

From February 18 through March 29, you’re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to
abortion. You’re also invited to stand and to pray peacefully during a 40day vigil in the public right-of-way outside the Richmond Medical Center
for Women (abortion facility) at 118 N. Boulevard at Grove Avenue for
one or more hours during the 40-day prayer vigil, and also to help spread

REFLEXIONES
1er Domingo de Cuaresma
Aunque oficialmente la Cuaresma dio comienzo el pasado Miércoles de Ceniza, hay que tener presente en nuestra reflexión litúrgica que para muchos feligreses la Eucaristía de este domingo es
su primera celebración cuaresmal. Por esta razón es bueno hacer
énfasis en la invitación de Jesús de creer en la Buena Nueva de
arrepentirnos y llevar a cabo una conversión desde el fondo del
corazón. Nuestro compromiso de Cuaresma no es tan solo hacer
obras penitenciales, que sí nos ayudan, pero que sin fe y confianza en Jesús, quedan vanas. La Cuaresma es un tiempo para
comenzar de nuevo y llegar a la conclusión de darnos cuenta de
que somos invitados a una conversión sincera: "Se ha cumplido
el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean
en el Evangelio".
Los Evangelios del tiempo de Cuaresma son un camino seguro
para acercarnos al Señor. Sin embargo, muchas veces nosotros
atrofiamos ese camino por no tener claro el cómo hacerlo. Pero
existen palabras simples que nos pueden ayudar si cada día nos
preguntamos: ¿Dónde encontrar a Dios? En el sacramento de la
reconciliación, en el abrazo sincero de perdonar al cónyuge, en la
mano amiga que me acepta como soy. ¿Para qué? Para ser perdonados, para encontrar la paz y la tranquilidad, para dar comienzo
a una nueva forma de vivir. ¿Cómo? Ya sin ningún rencor y sin
resentimientos de toda la vida, volviendo a la casa del Padre como lo hizo el hijo pródigo, haciendo un plan mejor de vida y
estableciendo prioridades nuevas. ¡Ánimo! ¡Dios nos espera en
esta Cuaresma!
