Welcome to our Parish
MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within
the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate
the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these
roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming
sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all
those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and,
by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

MEN’S ANNUAL RETREAT
MARCH 13—15, 2015
Everyone is invited to join the
following ministries on Friday
evenings during Lent for Stations
of the Cross:
Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center
“Holy Waiting . . . In a World that Can’t Wait”
The St. Catherine’s Parish Retreat for Men will be held at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center in the city of Sierra Madre on the weekend of
March 13-15. Join your fellow parishioners for this weekend of spiritual enrichment and growth.
During our retreat we will explore and reflect on the spiritual discipline of Holy Waiting. We will discover it is not passive waiting or
killing time waiting. With God , waiting is never wasted time. Holy
Waiting is the condition of high expectation with an attitude of life
infused with hope. It is also a conviction that calls us to live in the
present moment while being alert and attentive to the stirrings of the
Holy Spirit. Holy Waiting is lived in community—even as we abide in
silence and solitude.
Requested donation: $215.00* per person, $50.00 non-refundable
deposit secures your registration.
Visa/MC or check accepted
*Remember . . . No one is ever turned away. Please come! Join us
for a silent retreat. Take a weekend away from everyday activities
and strengthen your connection with God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten spring cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When
you are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important.
Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a
noticeable drop in the number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until Easter. This hints that fasting is a
prelude to feasting, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long
silence. In the same way, even a small fast—no cream in the coffee, no pepper
in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only point to deeper hungers, but help
us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together.

DON’T GIVE UP CHOCOLATE FOR LENT
Last week I was at Paulist Press Bookstore for the purpose of purchasing
some Lenten booklets for our catechumen and candidates that are in the
RCIA process. One of the booklets made the statement, “Don’t Give Up
Chocolate for Lent!” Of course, it got my attention immediately. The
intent behind this statement was to encourage us to do something different and outside of our normal routine for Lent.
Our catechumen and candidates will be doing something definitely outside of the normal routines for Lent. As an example, this weekend they are experiencing the Rite of Election at St.
Columban, where the Church through Bishop Vann formally ratifies their readiness for the
sacraments of initiation to be received at the Easter Vigil. In Addition, they have now entered
the “Period of Purification and Enlightenment” which is a time of reflection, intensely centered on conversion, marked by celebrations of the scrutinies and presentations of the Creed
and the Lord’s Prayer.
Because this Period is intense, they continue to need your prayers and support. If you have
not as yet met our catechumen, Sarah Boone, and our candidates, Blake Hite, Nancy Casebier
and Liz Reese, please introduce yourselves to them. Their photos are on the bulletin board
outside the front steps to the church.

Dios.
