The reflection question for this week is:
The rainbow was Noah’s reminder of God’s covenant
with all creation.
WHAT, LIKE THE RAINBOW, REMINDS ME OF
GOD’S LOVING CARE FOR CREATION?
 Our PARISH MISSION is quickly
approaching! THE COMPASSION LIFE is the
theme for this our Lenten Mission, which will be
lead by Fr. Andy O’Reilly. The Mission will be held
on Monday, March 2, Tuesday, March 3rd, and
Wednesday, March 4th. Each evening will begin at
7:30 PM and conclude at 8:30 PM. Prepare to
celebrate the joy of Easter by discovering how to let
go of what keeps you from living the fullness of
God’s life.
 CENTERING PRAYER will be prayed on
SUNDAY, MARCH 1st, from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM
in the church. All are welcome to this time of quiet
prayer.
 The SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING
OF THE SICK will be celebrated SUNDAY,
MARCH 22nd, at the 11:30 AM Mass. All are most
welcome to celebrate this sacrament of healing and
forgiveness.
 The STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be
prayed on the Friday mornings of Lent following the
8:00 AM Mass in English and at 7:00 PM in
Spanish.
 You are welcome to bring your old palm
from home in coming weeks to church and place
the palm in the basket which will be placed in the
sanctuary by the organ.

The SACRAMENT OF PENANCE is
celebrated on SATURDAY from 4:00 PM until 4:45
PM. All are welcome to celebrate this sacrament of
God’s forgiveness, peace, and healing.
 Please remember that during the season of
Lent the Holy Water fonts will be emptied. They will
be refilled on Holy Saturday after Morning Prayer.
Also please remember that during the season of
Lent the recommendation is that flowers not be

placed by the shrines to Mary, St. Joseph, St.
Anthony and the Sacred Heart.
 “While fasting with the body, brothers and
sisters, let us also fast in spirit. Let us loose every
bond of iniquity; let us undo the knots of every

agreements; let us give bread to the hungry, and
welcome to our house the poor who have no roof to
cover them, that we may receive mercy from Christ,

you. Prayer with fasting is good, but better is

 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL: Many
thanks to those members of the parish who have

APPEAL. Please help us reach our goal for 2015,
$39,600. Every gift or pledge is very much
appreciated. Your support of annual appeal helps
our diocese and our parish to provide many
pastoral care programs to so many people.

 Two weeks ago Fr. Steve spoke at Mass
about our fund raising efforts for PARISH SOCIAL
MINISTRY, FAITH FORMATION, and CHURCH
RESTORATION. In the next two weeks you will
receive in the mail a letter from Fr. Steve asking for
your support of our fund raising efforts so that we
can proceed with our plans. Many thanks to our
parishioners who have already made a gift or
pledge to our fund raising campaign. Their faithful
support is greatly appreciated. We have been
greatly blest throughout our 65 years as a
community of faith. Our hope is to provide for the
next 65 years so that the work of proclaiming the
gospel message can continue in our parish with our
buildings and programs in great shape for the
future. Please consider making a gift or pledge
which you are able to pay off over a period of time.
Memorials are still available if you are interested in
the church restoration project part of the campaign.

Community Life
Dear Friends,
Today we celebrate the First Sunday of the season of
Lent. Before we know it we will celebrate Easter
Sunday! But for now we are at the beginning of Lent
and Easter is still several weeks away.
These weeks are weeks of prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving. Throughout the days of Lent we remind
ourselves of the words prayed over us on Ash
Wednesday as the ashes were placed on our
foreheads; “Repent and believe in the gospel.” These
are words that call us to a season of on-going
conversation. I always remember the words of one of
my high school teachers when I was a student at St.
Pius X many years ago. He said something like this:
“Every Lent is different. Some are more powerful than
others, yet God works through all of them.” Those
words have been with me for many years. I find them
consoling, hopeful, and realistic. I also have another
memory. I can still remember my parents sitting with
my brother and myself just before the start of the
Lenten season and asking us what our plans for Lent
were. It wasn’t a long conversation, we just took turns
going around our kitchen table, talking about what we
would be doing for the 40 days of Lent. Of course, if
my parents thought we weren’t making enough of an
effort they would come up with some other
suggestions for our consideration. Or if we were
setting the bar a little too high they would suggest that
we think it over again. They would always make sure
that we were putting something aside for our “mite
box” so that we would be able to be mindful of those
who were less fortunate than we were. There was a
sense that we were in the season of Lent together. We
weren’t doing it alone. It was a family effort. It was
always a good time and we all came away ready for
Lent to get underway. I still recall those family
conversations and the words of the priest from St. Pius
X each year as Lent gets underway. They are good
memories.

This weekend we are called to remember the covenant
that our God has entered into with us. Throughout
these weeks we seek to live authentically the covenant
that God has entered into with each of us. It is a
covenant of loving kindness. In the reading from
Genesis this week God makes the covenant with all
creation. It is the first of many covenants that will be
part of the relationship of God and the people of
Israel. The sign of the covenant will be the “rainbow”
that appears in the sky. That image of the rainbow has
always struck me. I remember once while I was at St.
Joseph’s in Babylon and we had a group of about 40
kids working on a project. The shades had been pulled
down so that they could see a movie on the theme for
the afternoon. You could hear the rain pounding on
the roof of the building and when the film was over we
went over to lift up the shades and there before our
eyes was this incredible rainbow. I still remember
calling over all the boys and girls to look at the
windows and see this huge rainbow that filled the sky.
We changed the project and invited each of the boys
and girls to draw a rainbow and fill it with beautiful
colors. It proclaims the endlessness of God’s love for
all creation. Throughout these days of Lent we are
invited to enter into that endless and unconditional
love. How we do that is up to each one of us to decide.
We are all different people at different places in our
journey of faith. Our God comes to each of us at the
place and moment we are at.
In the gospel of Mark, Jesus goes into the wilderness
and is tempted. The scripture says: “He was among the
wild beats.” I’m sure that all of us have encountered
“the wild beasts” in our own life. Yet the scripture
goes on to say; “and the angels ministered to him.” As
we have encountered “the wild beasts”, we have also
encountered the “angels” who have ministered to us.
Perhaps throughout these days we can remember
both the “wild beasts” and the “angels.”
May these days of Lent find us open to the grace of
God! Let us be mindful of one another and minister to
one another!

at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. All are welcome!
 SEDER SUPPER. Our annual SEDER
SUPPER will be held on MONDAY, MARCH 30th ,
at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. Please save the
date and plan on joining with other parishioners to
celebrate this holy night.
 HOSPITALITY SUNDAY is today
(SUNDAY). Please come over to the Parish Center
following Sunday Mass and enjoy some great
refreshments and conversation. Many thanks to the
Music Ministry for hosting this month’s Hospitality
Sunday.

We are sorry that we had to cancel our
annual Mardi Grass this year. By the time the
deadline came to sign up we simply did not have
enough people who were coming. Hopefully the
Mardi Grass will return next year!

SYNOD ON THE FAMILY
This past fall there was a great deal of
media coverage regarding the preparations
for the Bishops’ Synod on the Family. At
this time, parishioners are being invited to
offer input to a series of questions in the
“Lineamenta” or final preparatory
document.

UN MENSAJE DE
NUESTRO PARROCO
Queridos amigos,
Hoy celebramos el primer domingo de la temporada
de Cuaresma. Antes de darnos cuenta, vamos a
celebrar el Domingo de Pascua. Pero por ahora
estamos en el comienzo de la Cuaresma y la Pascua
todavía queda lejos por varias semanas.
Estas son semanas de oración, ayuno y la limosna.
A lo largo de los días de cuaresma nos recordamos
de las palabras rezadas sobre nosotros el Miércoles
de Ceniza cuando las cenizas fueron puestas en
nuestras frentes; “Arrepiéntete y cree en el
Evangelio." Son palabras que nos llaman a una

temporada de la conversión continua. Siempre
recuerdo las palabras de uno de mis profesores
cuando yo era estudiante en el liceo de San Pío X
hace muchos años. Dijo algo como esto: "Cada
Cuaresma es diferente. Algunos son más poderosos
que otros; sin embargo, Dios trabaja a través de
todos." Esas palabras se han quedado conmigo por
muchos años. Las encuentro consoladoras,
prometedoras y realista. También tengo otro
recuerdo. Puedo recordar todavía mis padres
sentados con mi hermano y mí, justo antes del
comienzo de la temporada de Cuaresma. A nosotros
dos ellos buscaron nuestros planes para la
Cuaresma. No fue una conversación larga; sentados
en nuestra cocina, cada uno tomó su turno para
hablar sobre lo que estaríamos haciendo durante los
40 días de Cuaresma. Por supuesto, si mis padres
pensaban que no estábamos haciendo un esfuerzo
adecuado, harían ellos algunas sugerencias para
nuestra consideración. Si estuviéramos poniendo el
listón demasiado alto, sugerirían que lo
consideráramos otra vez. Ellos siempre se
aseguraban de que estábamos guardando algo para
nuestra "cajita", para que fuéramos conscientes de
los que eran menos afortunados que nosotros. Había
un sentido de que estábamos juntos en la temporada
de Cuaresma. No estábamos observando Cuaresma
individualmente. Fue un esfuerzo familiar. Siempre
fue un tiempo bueno y todos salimos de la
conversación listos para la Cuaresma. Todavía
recuerdo esas conversaciones familiares y las
palabras del sacerdote del liceo de San Pío X cada
año cuando la Cuaresma se pone en marcha. Son
recuerdos buenos.
Este fin de semana estamos llamados a recordar el
pacto que nuestro Dios ha hecho con nosotros. A lo
largo de estas semanas buscamos vivir
auténticamente el pacto que Dios ha hecho con cada
uno de nosotros. Es un pacto de bondad cariñosa.
En la lectura de Génesis esta semana Dios hace el
pacto con toda la creación. Es el primero de muchos
pactos que serán partes de la relación de Dios y el
pueblo de Israel. La señal de la alianza será el "arco
iris" que aparece en el cielo. Esa imagen del arco
iris siempre me ha impresionado. Recuerdo una vez,
mientras yo estaba en la parroquia San José en
Babylon. Tuvimos un grupo de unos 40 niños
trabajando en un proyecto. La sala estaba
oscurecida para que pudieran ver una película sobre

el tema de la tarde. Se podía oír la lluvia golpeando
el techo del edificio. Cuando se terminó la película
fuimos a levantar las cortinas y allí ante nuestros
ojos era un arco iris increíble. Todavía recuerdo que
llamé a todos los niños y niñas a mirar las ventanas
y ver este enorme arco iris que llenó el cielo.
Cambiamos el proyecto e invitamos a cada uno de
los niños y niñas a dibujar un arco iris y llenarlo con
colores hermosos. Este proclama el amor sin fin de
Dios para toda la creación. A lo largo de estos días
de Cuaresma se nos invita a entrar en ese amor
infinito e incondicional. ¿Cómo lo hacemos
nosotros es la decisión de cada uno de nosotros.
Somos personas diferentes en lugares diferentes de
nuestro camino de fe. Nuestro Dios viene a cada
uno de nosotros en el lugar y momento en que nos
encontramos.
En el evangelio de Marcos, Jesús va al desierto y
está tentado. La Escritura dice: "Vivió allí entre
animales salvajes." Estoy seguro de que todos
nosotros hemos encontrado "los animales salvajes"
en nuestras propias vidas. Sin embargo, la Escritura
sigue diciendo; "Y los ángeles le servían." Como
hemos encontrado "los animales salvajes" también
hemos encontrado los "ángeles" que han ministrado
a nosotros. Tal vez durante estos días pudiéramos
recordar tanto los "animales salvajes" como los
"ángeles".
Que estos días de Cuaresma nos encuentren abiertos
a la gracia de Dios. Seamos conscientes de todos y
atendámonos el uno al otro.

decorating cupcakes, popcorn, candy,
making cool door hangers and Valentine
pinwheels, and a movie. And of course a lot
of fun and laughter! Everyone left with a

LENTEN CALENDAR 2015
Our LENTEN PARISH MISSION will be led by Fr. Andy O’Reilly, C.PP.S. The theme for 2015 is:
THE COMPASSIONATE LIFE. The Mission will be held on MONDAY, MARCH 2nd, TUESDAY, MARCH 3rd, &
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4th, from 7:30 PM until 8:30 PM. All are most welcome!
On Monday evening the theme will be: “Living with God’s Compassionate and Unconditional Love.”
On Tuesday evening the theme will be “Living with the Challenges and Pain of Life.”
On Wednesday the theme for the evening will be “Living with the People of God.”
One of the traditional Lenten practices for many Catholics is the praying of the Stations of the Cross on Friday.
The “Via Crucis” is prayed every Friday in English at 8:30 AM and in Spanish at 7:15 PM. The Stations of the Cross
will be prayed on the following days:



March 6th, 13th, 20th, & 27th
This year we will have a HOLY HOUR on the THURSDAYS of Lent (February 26th, March 5th, 12th, 19th, and
26th) from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM. All are most welcome!
The annual PARISH SOUP SUPPER will be held on FRIDAY, MARCH 13th, at 6:30 PM in the PARISH CENTER. All
are welcome!
The annual SEDER SUPPER will be held on MONDAY, MARCH 30th. The Seder Supper will be held in the PARISH
CENTER and will begin at 6:30 PM.
The Sacrament of PENANCE is celebrated on the Saturdays of Lent from 4:00 PM until 4:45 PM. In addition to
these days, the sacrament of penance will also be celebrated on THURSDAY, MARCH 26th, from 4:00 PM until 5:00
PM and again from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Penance will also be celebrated on MONDAY, MARCH 30th, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM .
There will be a COMMUNAL CELEBRATION of the sacrament of penance on TUESDAY, MARCH 31st, at 7:30
PM. All are most welcome to celebrate the sacrament of penance during the season of Lent as we prepare for the
feast of Easter.
On FRIDAY, MARCH 27th, we will hold our annual making of Palm Crosses and Easter Baskets event at 6:30
PM in the Parish Center. All are welcome!
PALM SUNDAY is MARCH 29th. It marks the beginning of Holy Week. It commemorates the entrance of Jesus into
Jerusalem.



On HOLY THURSDAY (April 2nd) we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in the evening. On this night we
have the washing of the feet to remind us of the call to humble service. Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the
most holy days of the liturgical year. These three days are known as the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good
Friday, and the Easter Vigil). The Holy Thursday Mass will be bilingual.



Morning Prayer starting at 9:00 AM – The Church sets aside different times each day for prayer. It is known
as the Prayer of the Church or Liturgy of the Hours. These times of prayer are meant to remind us of the
presence of God throughout the day and call us to place oneself in the presence of God. Morning Prayer
during the Triduum is prayed communally. It consists of psalms from the Hebrew Scriptures and readings
from the Scriptures as well as intercessions for the universal church.
8:00 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Bilingual)
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 10:30 PM.
GOOD FRIDAY (April 3rd) we remember the Passion and Death of the Lord. The liturgy consists of the Liturgy of
the Word (including the singing of the passion), the veneration of the cross, the intercessory prayers and the
distribution of Holy Communion. Mass is not celebrated on Good Friday. Good Friday is a day of fast and
abstinence.






HOLY SATURDAY (April 4th) we celebrate the Easter Vigil at 8:00 PM. The vigil includes the lighting of the
Easter Fire, the readings from the Hebrew Scriptures, the singing of the Gloria and the proclamation of the Easter
Gospel. Following the Gospel the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist are celebrated, the baptized
renew their baptismal promises and bless themselves with the Easter Water. The Mass continues as usual and ends
with our being sent forth to proclaim the Resurrection of the Lord.



EASTER SUNDAY (April 5th) we proclaim the Resurrection of the Lord. Today we renew our baptismal promises
and rejoice in the gift of God’s infinite love!

SUMMARY OF PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING
(February 11th, 2015)
At our February 11th meeting we reviewed the preparations for the upcoming Leadership
Community meeting which will be held on Wednesday, February 25th. We also reviewed the
ongoing fundraising efforts for our Faith Formation programs, our Parish Social Ministry
programs, and the restoration of our church. A report on where we stand is being prepared
and will published in FOCUS in the coming weeks. Many thanks to all our parishioners who
have already contributed or made a pledge to our fund raising efforts.
We also looked at the ongoing preparations for ARISE TOGETHER IN CHRIST. There will be a
meeting on Saturday, March 14th, in the Parish Center for all those who are part of the
planning process. We continue to discuss our efforts to welcome new parishioners and
invite them to become fully Involved in the life of our parish. Our hope is to invite new
parishioners to Mass on one our upcoming Hospitality Sundays for a welcome at Mass and
refreshments following Mass in the Parish Center. We discussed the Pasta Supper that we
had for our 65th Anniversary Celebration. It was a wonderful night and the members of the
Pastoral Council would like to see it happen again sometime in 2016. The Pastoral Council
reviewed the plans for Lent, 2015. We are glad to hear that the making of Easter baskets and
palm crosses will be held once again on March 27th. The members of the Pastoral Council
encourage feedback from parishioners following the different programs or events that the
parish has throughout the year. Our hope is that the feedback can provide positive energy
for the future and encourage parishioners to get more involved in the planning of parish
events. The Pastoral Council continues to discuss Youth Ministry and different models that
might be effective in our parish. We plan on having a Mass for those who will be graduating
from high school this June followed by a simple brunch in the backyard of the rectory for the
graduates and their families. There are two openings on the Pastoral Council.
We pray that all the members of the parish have a grace filled season of Lent. The next
Pastoral Council meeting is on March 11th.
