Page 2 February 22, 2015 A True Fast. When God wanted to confront His people with their infidelity and their lack pf sincerity in their fasting He began by accusing them of injustice. He tells them that they must start by freeing the oppressed and only then does He go on to insist that they feed the hungry and clothe the naked: “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.” (Is. 58:6-11) Maybe when we hear God saying that we must liberate the oppressed we may think He means set slaves free, or liberate the people of N. Korea from their insane dictator. And we might say, ‘well, neither of those apply in my community, so I can ignore that part of God’s reproach.’ But there are the oppressed in our community - those marginalized by a lack of education, those afflicted with mental disorders but have nowhere to get help, those who can’t get access to decent healthcare, those whose lives are ruined by a system that makes no allowances for youthful foolishness. To seek justice for others is a fundamental duty of each and every Christian. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, constantly calls on Catholics and on world leaders to do something to change a system where 10 % of the world’s population have 90% of the wealth - and the advantages that go with wealth. In our county the mentally ill have few resources. There are 36 psychiatrists and only five of them are accepting new Medicare patients. In our county 1,360 young people were detained by the police in 2013. More than half (701) were arrested, resulting in a criminal record which will follow them for the rest of their lives. In our county thousands of people (principally the undocumented) have no access to healthcare. Whatever our position on their legal status, how can we refuse to help the seriously sick? We may say, ‘well there’s nothing I can do about that.’ But those we elect as our leaders and servants can do something about it. But they won’t, unless we tell them that we need them to. Here at St. Ann’s the voice that we use to let our leaders know what we require of them is our Justice Ministry - PEACE. PEACE’s big chance to influence our leaders is coming up on March 23rd. Please don’t turn away if a friend or neighbor asks you to accompany them to this event. You may think that you don’t make a difference. Maybe not: but 2,000 people who ‘don’t make a difference,’ make a big difference! Towards an encounter with the Risen Christ. That is the goal of our journey of faith. We take steps that bring us ever closer to Jesus. I remember that as of Feb 2nd I have been serving two and a half years in Haines City. I have been taking stock of the experiences and shared with the Parish of Saint Ann many anecdotes. I give thanks to God for being so great and generous with me. There are only ninety-two days until the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Risen. I want to make an effort to focus on two important aspects: one is the process of adaptation and the other the desire to serve with joy. On arriving at any place, human beings experience a state of uncertainty, it is the recognition of the unknown. All parishes operate broadly similarly. However, each one has its own particularity and customs, and also the community expectations regarding the new priest, the policies of the Diocese and many others things. All those things forcefully reaffirmed my belief that human beings are in a constant discovery of a new learning. However, a permanent and subtle inner strength moves us as priests to offer our services in different celebrations, education of the people and taking care of everything in the Parish Community. Always, in line with the founder of the church, Jesus Christ, the priests must be cheerful and willing to care for the poor and needy who ask for help or comfort. It is the joy of service. Then the processes of exchange and integration kick in, barriers experienced in the past experiences are overcome, the hope for the future is recovered and we continue working. This was the source of the idea of promoting the Parish´s Sense of Eucharistic Identity. Because the Eucharist is the Sacrament of our faith, we decided to hold an event that allowed us to pray and meditate together around the Eucharist through the Lectio Divina with the passage of the Disciples on the road to Emmaus. Behind all the organization and planning of the process of The First Parish Ministries Gathering 2013 was Father Robert, who as the Good Shepherd was leading his flock to fresh pastures with the Risen. In the end, the fruits have been positive. We not only have learned about recognizing one another with respect and brotherhood, but we are also interested in working together overcoming the barrier of age, language, social conditions and jealousy in our ministries. In fact, we are sharing the faith in Jesus centered on his presence in the Holy Eucharist, strengthening us in unity and love. So we see with pleasure the celebration of the Year of Consecrated Life and we see this as a great opportunity to celebrate with you The Second Parish Ministries Gathering 2015. The main objective of the 2nd PMG is that participants, men and women of faith, baptized and active members of ministries, together with his priests, form the great family of Catholics building our parish community into the Kingdom of God, a kingdom of peace and justice, a kingdom of love and brotherhood. Remember that the Pastoral Plan of the Diocese is summarized in the diocesan logo "Many members, one body". It is a call for unity in the bond of love and peace. Finally, it will be an appropriate occasion to study the Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Pastores Dabo Vobis Of His Holiness Saint John Paul II Directed to Bishops, clergy and faithful on The Formation Of The Priests in the current situation. The life of Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd is in the person of those who have been ordained by the laying on of hands - the priests. In his Greeting for Lent 2015, Pope Francis invites us to overcome indifference and take part in organized evangelistic projects. So I ask the leaders of the various ministries in English and Spanish to come together this Lent to prepare this event. Please, leaders of ministries, contact me in the Office to set up an appointment with me to see how your group can play a part. God bless you. Fr. Frank Page 3 February 22, 2015 SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL: In today’s gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power and esteem. P.
