Capital Normal University
首都师范大学 Capital Normal University
CNU
Capital Normal University (CNU), established in 1954, is a key comprehensive university
supported and funded by Beijing Municipal Government, embracing liberal arts, sciences,
engineering, management, law, education, fine arts and music etc.
CNU greatly values academic exchanges and has signed cooperation agreements with 194
foreign universities and institutions from 32 countries and regions. Confucius Institutes were
jointly set up in St. Petersburg State University in Russia, University of Minnesota in
America, University of Venice in Italy, University of Piura in Peru, State University of New
York at Buffalo in America and Bremen University of Science & Technology in German. In
addition, as one of the earliest universities authorized by China’s Education Ministry to
accept international students, Capital Normal University accepts about 2,000 long-term and
short-term international students annually.
CNU is located at the west third ring road of Beijing with convenient public transportation of
subway, buses and taxi. The campus is not far away from both the prosperous downtown in
Beijing and world famous historical sites such as the Summer Palace and Forbidden City etc.
CIE
College of International Education (CIE) is one of 18 academic institutes in Capital Normal
University. CIE is responsible for Chinese language education, international student service
and international communication between CNU and foreign universities. With outstanding
faculties and advanced facilities (multimedia classroom, lecture hall and comfortable
dormitory etc), CIE provides students with comfortable living and learning environment.
The dormitory building has Chinese restaurant, Japanese/Korean restaurant, cafe, store,
bookstore, laundry room, public kitchen, indoor swimming pool, business center etc. There is
single room, double room and four-bed room, equipped with bathroom, TV, computer,
air-conditioner, refrigerator etc.
Faculty
There are 1509 full-time teachers in CNU of which 299 are professors, 540 are
associate professors, 818 have doctoral degree and 510 have master's degree. 88% of
full-time teachers have master’s degree or doctoral degree. Now there are a number of
experts and scholars who have academic influences at home and abroad. There are 6
academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering,
1 academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, 3 members in Discipline
Appraisal Group of Academic Degree Committee of State Council, 13 members in
Teaching Advisory Committee of Education Ministry, 4 candidates in national
“Thousand Talents” plan, 6 Yangtze River scholar professors, 1 Yangtze River
Scholar Chair professors, 34 Beijing Technological New Stars, 176 Beijing
“Outstanding Teachers”, 35 Beijing Special Term Professors and 9 candidates of
High-level Talents Scheme etc.
College of International Education has 50 full-time language teachers and about 40
part-time teachers, of which 2 are professors, 15 are associate professors and 9 master
tutors. 32% teachers have doctoral degree. 80% have overseas teaching experience
and certificate of Teaching Chinese as foreign Language (advanced level). CIE has
undertaken various programs funded by Confucius Institution, China’s Education
Ministry or Beijing Municipal Education Commission etc. Research results published
on Chinese Teaching in the World and other academic journals.

Scholarships
Capital Normal University is one of the earliest universities that can accept "Chinese
Government Scholarship" students and "Confucius Institute Scholarship” students.
Furthermore, self-supported student have a good opportunity to win “Beijing Municipal
Scholarship”.
1). Beijing Municipal Scholarship
All new degree-seeking students (undergraduates, postgraduates and doctors) studying in
Capital Normal University can directly get “Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship for
International Student” for one academic year. He shall attend courses, finish homework and
pass exams, which means he need meet the scholarship requirement for new degree-seeking
students. From the second academic year, he can continue getting full scholarship if he meets
the scholarship requirement for matriculated degree-seeking students.
2). Confucius Institute Scholarship
Confucius Institute Scholarship, established by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban),
provides financial aid for students, scholars and Chinese language teachers worldwide to
proceed to a Master's degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
in Chinese universities, or study in other majors such as Chinese Language and Literature,
Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.
Confucius Institute Scholarship students are exempt from registration fees, tuition, fees for
basic learning materials, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with a one-off
resettlement subsidy, monthly allowance, outpatient medical service and comprehensive
insurance for foreign students studying in China.
Capital Normal University is one of the universities which are allowed by Hanban to accept
"Confucius Institute Scholarship students". More information about implementing rules,

3). Chinese Government Scholarship
In order to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese people and
people from all over the world, and to promote cooperation and exchanges in fields of politics,
economy, culture, education, and trade between China and other countries, Chinese
government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students,
teachers and scholars to study and research in Chinese higher education institutions. For more

Capital Normal University is authorized by China’s Education Ministry to accept "Chinese
Government Scholarship students". For more information about implementing rules and
application procedure, please consult Chinese embassy (consulate) or dispatched departments
and agencies which are authorized by China Government Council and submit application at
Chinese embassy (consulate) in your country.

Campus Life
International students in CNU enjoy a colorful campus life. There are campus sports meeting,
"Chinese Star" competition, Chinese debate, cooking competition, ceramic art experience &
Chinese culture experience activities etc. Each semester, CIE organizes cultural tours to help
international students to better understand Chinese culture, such as visiting the Great Wall
and watching Chinese Kung fu show etc.
International Student Union also organizes activities and is a great platform for international
students making friends with Chinese students in CNU.
About Scholarship
There is 20 scholarship provided for the 2015/2016 academic year
as bachelor degree,master degree and PHD student.( Chinese Lang
uage scholars is not included)
International trade, tourism management, geographical science,
geographical information science, remote sensing science and techno
logy can be taught in English on September 2015, therefore, the co
urses above does not have Chinese language require. The level for
the Chinese language please check the table above.
Any new degree-seeking student (undergraduates, postgraduates

nt” for one academic year. He shall attend courses, finish homewor
