THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WORSHIP CHRISTIAN FORMATION ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –Marriage & Family Jesus is encountered in daily life within the domestic church, so that the Holy Spirit gently blows upon the faith of everyone in the family, turning sparks to embers and embers to flame! 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Then the fever left her and she waited on them." What a day for this woman! She had been confined to bed, burning with a fever, too sick to move around. Then, her son-in-law showed up with his brother, two friends, and a man with a growing reputation for working miracles. With no ceremony, this man came straight over to her, took her hand and helped her to her feet. There was no time to question Jesus' bold action because in an instant, the woman was healed. Whatever he had done had worked! We can imagine that the appearance of this group of guests at her house caused Simon's mother-in-law some distress; in her illness, she had been unable to offer them the hospitality so important in that culture. But as soon as the fever disappeared, she regained the freedom to properly welcome her visitors. No longer sick, she was able to serve. And that was exactly what she wanted to do. Without hesitation, she began to use her restored health to care for others. And soon enough, her hospitality was extended to new levels because "the whole town was gathered at the door" to see Jesus in action. How do we use our health? Do we think of it as a gift from God to be put at the service of others? Or do we think of good health as simply our own right? Today's virtuous woman teaches us about a kind of physical generosity. Recognizing that her health had been given to her as a gift, she in turn offered her strength, her ability to stand and walk and work, as a gift to others. What a beautiful way to understand the human body. Instead of focusing on how our bodies can serve us, may we follow the example of this woman who was so quick to attend to the needs of her family, her friends, and her neighbors. Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al) Jesus’ ministry, even today, is to bring healing and wholeness. He continues it through the Church and through us. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from illness. We all need the healing of our minds, our memories and our broken relationships. Jesus now uses counselors, doctors, friends or even strangers in his healing ministry. It is good to identify with the mother-in-law of Peter. We can ask for the ordinary healing we need in our own lives. When we are healed, let us not forget to thank Jesus for his goodness, mercy, and compassion. As Jesus turned toward us, let us turn to serve others. Our own healing process is completed only when we are ready to help others in their needs and to focus on things outside us. Let us communicate with the sick through our cards, telephone calls and emails. Let us exercise the healing power of Jesus by visiting the sick and praying for their healing. Let us remember that we need the Lord’s strength, not only to make ourselves and others well, but to make ourselves and others whole. Worship Corner: Prayer for unity and intercessions. The grateful memory of God’s salvation leads us to make a bold petition, our main petition at every Eucharist: We pray for unity. “Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit” (Eucharistic Prayer II). To this petition we add prayers for the bishop of Rome and for the bishop of the local Church; we pray for the living and the dead and especially for ourselves, that through the intercession of the saints we may one day arrive at that table in heaven of which this table is only a hint and a taste. We look forward to that glorious day and raise our voices with those of all the saints who have gone before us as the priest raises the consecrated bread and wine and offers a toast, a doxology, a prayer of glory to God in the name of Christ: “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.” Our “Amen” to this prayer acclaims our assent and participation in the entire Eucharistic Prayer. L.I.F.E. (Living In Faith Everyday) Ash Wednesday is February 18th. Our LIFE session will offer time for reflection, conversation , and prayer. Take some time out and join with others as we ready ourselves for Lent. LIFE is Sunday, February 8th at 9:30 am. (Training provided) The next sessions are Feb. 22nd, March 1st, 8th, and 22nd. Ash Wednesday is February 18th. Parents are always welcome to sit in and/or help with any session with their child. Parents—The Year 2 of the Diocesan Evangelization Pastoral Plan is Focusing on the Domestic Church. “It is through family life that countless unplanned encounters with the Risen Lord, with the beauty of the Paschal Mystery, and with the mystery of love incarnate take place.” According to the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, “The family is, so to speak, the domestic church. This means that it is in the context of the family that we first learn who God is and how to prayerfully seek His will for us.” Parents, in being able to “prayerfully seek His will for us” our children need to know their prayers and say them together as a family. The Rosary is a wonderful way to learn these prayers and pray together. Our L.I.F.E. classes have charts with the children’s names on them and the prayers that they are to know. Learn these prayers together if you don’t know them. Driving in the car is one of the best places, with headphones off, radio off, movies off and any other distraction. You can have contests and see how many Hail Mary’s or Our Father’s you can say at a stop -light. Or how long an order takes at a drive-thru by how far you get with praying the rosary. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is the opportunity for our children to experience the Word of God at their level. We need nine (8-9) additional adults/young adults/High School help to make this happen. Contact Fran Kuzma at 275-7962 ext. 1120 to help. Don’t forget to save your “Labels for Education” along with the bar code. There is a box in the Information Center for your wonderful contributions. YOUTH EDGE & LIFETEEN This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN we began a four part series on the four marks of the Church. The four marks of the Church are shaped by the identity the Church has in Christ. The four marks are “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.” We identify these marks every time we recite the Nicene Creed. At our session, we discussed the nature of the Church as “one” and we talked about our one Baptism, our unity in Jesus Christ, and our one profession of faith. The teens had the opportunity to discuss their role as a member of the body of Christ. We concluded by reminding them of their Baptism and gave each of them a candle to represent our mission as a member of the one Church, the body of Christ. Our next EDGE/LIFETEEN session will be held Monday, February 23, from 6:30-8:30pm. ©Liturgical Publications Inc.
