Page Two 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time 594 WITHOUT YOU WE ARE NOTHING! In the first reading from the Book of Job, he describes how he is living through months of misery. Depressing, painful and long, like no other in the Sacred Scriptures. He experiences the crucible of happiness. What today we call our challenges and difficulties whether in our personal life, school, workforce, or family, he lived through all of it. The devil challenges God in saying that when Job feels he has fallen in the abyss he will somehow turn away from his faith and away from God. God accepts this challenge because he knows the faith of His servant. This is where Job begins to question the feelings that this suffering has generated; the meaning of life, friendship, family, and of who truly loves him. These are questions that are truly valid in the present day when we feel in such need for affection, but yet we avoid it, hiding in our own conflicts, an inner world that overwhelms us and above all a monitor that we cannot ignore, that we cannot stop watching… Job feels the hand of God at every turn. His family, his possessions, even his own well being is put aside. He is fighting against all to remain faithful. For certain he feels pain and agony but he has HOPE. He has lost all else. In the same way Paul, who was a rare man, understood the meaning of life in the preaching of the Gospel: Good News, liberation through Christ Jesus. Only in Him can we find PEACE. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus continues healing His people, not of their humanity, but of those diseases that prevent a normal lifestyle. We are in such need of this healing. We all resemble in someway the protagonists that play an important part in the Scriptures. At times we suffer like Job; at times we feel abandoned, or worse yet, we ignore the one who is in need or waits for us; at times we allow that bad spirit in us to come out and play with temptation or we try to tempt others. It is possible that we allow anger and lies to transform us into a horrible person. At other times we feel like Paul, with the strength of God in us and the desire to save ourselves and others for Christ. There are times when we are sick and we believe that our illness or debility is colossal but no matter what our situation we must always remember that it is Christ who is on our side at all times in our life, from the rising of the sun to the setting (Psalm 113:3), from the very hairs of your head (Luke 12:7), in every germ of the earth and in every leave that falls. Simon’s mother in law gets out of bed as the fever leaves her and she does something with her life. This is what we need in our life, that active dimension of gratitude. Let your parents know that you love them, let your significant other know that you love them, let your neighbor know that you are able to help them, let your parish know you exist, and your children know that you need them. Multitudes of people wanted to get near Jesus not only out of curiosity but because being near Him they felt healthy, saved, and holy… Who do you look for? Who looks for you? My blessings. Fr. LENTEN REGULATIONS Here is what the Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics: 1. The days of fast (only one meal) and abstinence (no meat) are ASH WEDNESDAY (18th February 2015) and GOOD FRIDAY (3rd April 2015) 2. The other Fridays of Lent are DAYS OF ABSTINENCE (No meat). Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to abstain (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat). The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year -- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 22nd to Trinity Sunday, May 31st, 2015. O come, let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God. (Psalm 95 (94):6-7) 594 READING OF THE DAY HEALING MINISTRY During Jesus’ ministry “he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons.” This is the case in today’s Gospel. Jesus fulfills the vision of Psalm 147: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Jesus knew, however, that he couldn’t possibly heal all the illness in the world. No matter how many people he cured or how many hours he ministered, there always would be more suffering people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering. His “purpose” was to preach the coming of the reign of God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could have said, “Woe to me if I do not preach” that good news. TODAY’S READINGS: First Reading: Job 7:14 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19 Gospel: Mark 1:29-29 Job’s cry of hopelessness stands in marked contrast to the hope of those who put their trust in Jesus, who “heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds”. Such are the blessings of the good news. From ORDO 2015 REFLECTION QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK ADULT: Name a time this past week when you shared the Good News with a coworker, a neighbor, or a family member. CHILD: What can you do to help your friends and classmates know more about Jesus? ATTENTION: PARKING AT IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH Park only in the designated parking spaces or your vehicle will be towed by the company or fined by the Police. If you attend mass at ICC, we remind you there is an ample parking lot entering from Division St with an easy access to the side ramp entrance. Please use this parking lot instead to allow visitors to park in the Chestnut Avenue one. Thank you for your collaboration. Y a ti, ¿quién te busca?…Y tú, ¿a quién buscas? We all know the story - on February 11, 1858, a young woman named Bernadette, saw an apparition of a “Lady dressed in white with a blue sash and a yellow rose on each foot, the color of her rosary.” There were 18 apparitions in all, the last one occurring on July 16, 1858. February 11th is also the celebration of the World Day of the Sick. All Catholics need to consider "the close connection that exists between the mystery of the Eucharist, the role of Mary in the plan of salvation and the reality of human pain and suffering." Pope Benedict said, in 2008, that, "Mary is the model of total abandonment to the will of God" and, in following her example, Christians learn to place their entire existence in God's hands, including their "joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments in an awareness that trials, pain and suffering enrich the meaning of our pilgrimage on earth." Mary is near to all who suffer, standing alongside them as she stood alongside her son as he suffered. In worshiping Jesus in the Eucharist, "we entrust ourselves to him as the hope that does not disappoint," Pope Benedict said, and in receiving Communion "we receive him as the medicine of immortality that heals the body and the spirit." Following Jesus and imitating Mary, Catholics must learn to give their lives for others, especially those who are suffering and in whom "the Christian community recognizes the face of its Lord," Pope Benedict said. "Mysteriously united to Christ, one, who suffers with love and docile abandonment to the divine will, becomes a living offering for the salvation of the world," he said. "The vocation of every Christian is truly that of being, together with Jesus, bread that is broken for the life of the world," the pope said. 594 08 February 2015 Page Eleven OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS PARISH ORGANIZATION & COMMUNITY PARISHES NEWS LADIES OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Next Corp. IS GOD CALLING YOU? Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a faithful, single Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month’s discernment on February 22, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at St. James Parish, 115 E Delaware Ave, Pennington NJ. Join Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Walsh, as he shares his experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and conclude with conversation and a meal.
