Gilson Gazette - 30 January 2015
Y
ale University is a private university
established in 1701 by a group of
Congregational ministers. As the
third oldest university in the United States it
was the first university to award a PhD and is
notable for its high profile graduates. The list
of notables include: five US presidents, 19
supreme court judges, 13 living billionaires, Meryl Streep, Hillary
Clinton, a number of European royalty, prime ministers from Italy
and Turkey, presidents from Mexico, Germany and the Philippines,
composers, sportsman, businessmen, actors, inventors and it is
associated with 52 Nobel laureates and 230 Rhodes scholars.
It’s an impressive list of former students, but I’m interested
in David Brainerd - the only Yale student to be expelled and that
has a University building named after him.
William Carey, translated the Bible into Bengali, Sanskrit,
Punjabi and many other languages and is recognised as a central
figure in the modernisation of India and possibly its greatest
missionary and he said he was inspired by David Brainerd’s life
story. So too Adoniram Judson the great missionary to Burma
credits the reading of Brainerd’s biography to inspiring him to go
to south-east Asia.
Both Princeton University and Dartmouth (another Ivy
league university) owe their existence to Brainerd as they were
established because he was expelled from Yale. John Wesley, the
founder of the Methodist church, stated that all preachers should
read ‘The Life of David Brainerd’. So who was David Brainerd?
Born in 1718 and orphaned at 14 with his nine brothers and
sisters, Brainerd enrolled at Yale when he was 21. At that time
the Christian life was very sober and austere in its style and
many of the young people became inspired by visiting preachers
to give life to their Christian faith. Some of the young people
were considered to be too enthusiastic by the University trustees
and faculty and after a comment by Brainerd he was expelled.
Because the law stated that only graduates from Harvard and
Yale could preach the gospel, Brainerd had to reassess his plans
and after some discussion with friends he chose to become a
missionary and friend to the American Indians. No licence or
endorsement was required for this type of service. His work with
the Indians was brief, lasting only five years in which time he
suffered greatly from lack of food and loneliness, before passing
away from tuberculosis at just 29 years of age.
Adversity, difficulties, challenges or problems – we can choose
the label but generally we don’t have any choice in whether we
have these in our life. Usually it’s a question of when do we have
them not if we will have them. But the more important question
is how will we respond when adversity arrives out our door?
I trust that this year our students will learn endurance,
tenacity, strength, determination and to recognise that a positive
spirit, a gracious heart and a compassionate attitude - with God’s
help can bring truly remarkable results.
It’s worth a thought

The VALUE for Week 02 of Term 1 is:
RESPECT
Respect is an attitude of treating others how we would like
to be treated. It is always followed by action. It is more than
knowing what is right. It involves doing what is right.
God’s greatest demonstration of respect is that He gives us
free choice. He does not force our will but respects our decisions.
He deals with us with compassion and faithfulness.
“Show respect for all people, love the brothers and sisters of
God’s family, respect God, honour the king.

College Dedication Night
- TONIGHT
Hello families and friends of the college.
At the beginning of each College year we
conduct a dedicatory service on our College
grounds. This program is about taking the
opportunity to come together as a College
community to dedicate our students and staff.
It is a very informal service, although very
meaningful nonetheless where we invite God’s
blessings and protection on all that happens
during this school year.
The program will commence with a
BBQ tea provided for you by the College. It is
a great time to meet the teachers and other
families of our community. The service is
held tonight, January 30th at 6.00pm in the
Secondary School courtyard. Bring a camping
chair or rug for your seating comfort. We look
forward to seeing you there.

even every day..

around our College

• Promote traffic awareness and road
safety
• Raise the awareness of health and
promote physical activity
