Welcome !
We invite all new members of our parish community to register at the Center or online. We also
encourage you to join one of our numerous parish ministries, so that you may acquire a deeper sense
of belonging and accomplishment serving the needs of others.
Celebration of the Eucharist
Weekdays (Monday to Friday) at 9:30 a.m.
Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. (Vigil for Sunday)
Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. (Family Mass) and 12:00 Noon
Holy days usually at 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. (Please check the bulletin or website.)
Becoming a Catholic or Adult Confirmation
Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Were you never Confirmed and now find
that you would like to complete your Sacraments of Initiation? Are you interested
in finding out more about the Catholic faith? If you answered “Yes” to any of these
questions, then Faith Formation is for you! Call the Parish Center for more information.
Baptism
Baptisms are usually celebrated on the second and fourth Sundays at 1:15 p.m. You are
encouraged to register for the baptism BEFORE YOUR CHILD IS BORN, so that it is easier
to attend the required Baptism Preparation Class. Please call the Center and we will be
happy to set up an appointment. Many parents also use this opportunity to register in
the Parish as a new parishioner. Information about Godparents is available on the website.
Marriage
We are happy to arrange for your wedding. First, we have the marriage interview and then
we can set the date for the wedding. More information is available on the website. Please
call the Center for an appointment and we will be happy to help you!
Reconciliation
Confessions are heard in our Church Reconciliation Room (in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel)
on Saturdays from 4:00 until 4:45 p.m. You are also welcome to call the Center and make an
appointment to celebrate the Sacrament.
Anointing of the Sick
We encourage all those eligible for this Sacrament to be anointed after the Noon Mass on the
first Sunday of the month or by calling the Center. Those eligible are those who are about to
undergo an operation; are suffering from serious illness and the condition has worsened; or
are enduring the weakening effects of advancing age and it has been one year since they
were last anointed.

LENT 2015
The holy season of Lent is our annual “retreat” in preparation for Holy Week and the Solemnity of Easter
when we renew the vows made at our Baptism. Each of us has the responsibility to discern what the year’s
commitment to prayer, fasting and almsgiving will be. Below are listed some of the opportunities offered at
our parish.
THE DISCIPLINE OF FASTING
During Lent, we join the Church throughout the world in abstaining from meat on
Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent (at least from age fourteen). We have one full
meal (we fast) on the two central days of penance during Lent: Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday (at least from age fourteen until age fifty-nine). Everyone is encouraged
to participate in these disciplines, even those who do not fall in the age categories.
Those with medical conditions, of course, are not bound by the Church’s obligation
of fast and abstinence.
ALMSGIVING FOR THE POOR
The Church is particularly aware of our responsibility to help the poor during the holy
season of Lent. Parishioners may choose to participate in the “Mite Boxes” that will be
distributed after masses on the First Sunday of Lent and also at Family Program. All
donations are given to Catholic Relief Services for direct support of the needy locally
and throughout the world. (See special section in this week’s bulletin “Operation Rice
Bowl.”
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
There will be six Lenten communal Reconciliation Services which include individual
confession. During the Lenten Mission, the sacrament will be celebrated on Monday
evening, March 9, at 8:30 p.m. All parishioners are invited to join the Family
Program parents and children when they celebrate Reconciliation on Monday,
March 16 at 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday, March 17 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.; Wednesday,
March 18 at 4:30 p.m. On the Monday of Holy Week, March 30, the communal
Penance Service begins at 7:30 p.m. Individual confessions are available on Saturday,
February 21; February 28; March 7; March 14; March 21; and March 28 from 4:00 to
4:45 p.m. Also on Monday, March 30, from 4 to 5 p.m. and Holy Saturday, April 4 from 11 a.m. to Noon.
DAILY MASS
Monday through Friday, Lenten Daily Mass is celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Those who wish to
participate in the Sacrifice of the Mass are encouraged to arrive a few minutes earlier for
quiet prayer and preparation. We respectfully remind latecomers that arriving late is
distracting and inappropriate.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
The fourteen Stations of the Cross are prayed in the church at 7:30 p.m. on the
Fridays of Lent: February 20; February 27; March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (and also on
Good Friday, April 3).
[Holy Week and Easter: The schedule for Holy Week and Easter is mailed to each household in the parish and
will be in the bulletin and on the website.]

OPERATION
RICE BOWL
PARISH MISSION
2015
As part of our parish Lenten observance, we will once
again participate in Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten
program, Operation Rice Bowl.
Please use the Calendar Guide in your home during
Lent to learn about our global community and fill the
cardboard rice bowls with your sacrificial contributions
from money saved serving simple meals.
The filled bowls will be collected on Palm Sunday.
Since 1975, Operation Rice Bowl has inspired Catholics
in the United States to pray, fast, learn and give as we
increase our understanding of our global community.
We will connect this understanding with the principles
of Catholic Social Teaching throughout our Lenten
journey.
Father Michael A. Sullivan, O.S.A., will
be speaking at all the weekend Masses
on March 7 and 8.
He will offer a three-day parish Lenten
Mission Monday, March 9 to Wednesday,
March 11. Morning sessions begin with
Mass at 9:30 a.m., followed by reflection.
Evening sessions and reflections begin
at 7:30 p.m.
We encourage you to participate in Operation Rice
Bowl at home with your family and loved ones. 75%
of contributions to Operation Rice Bowl help fund CRS
programs which positively affect tens of thousands of
lives around the world. 25% of contributions support
hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in dioceses in
the United States.
Operation Rice Bowl Prayer
We lift our prayers to you, God of Love, on
behalf of our brothers and sisters in need.
As we learn about their struggles,
our almsgiving comes to their aid;
our fasting unites us in their hunger.
You call us to be disciples for all nations.
Bless us this Lenten season. Amen.
Rice Bowls will be available in the Gathering Lobby
after all masses the weekend of February 21 / 22.

Ash Wednesday marks the
beginning of the Season of
Lent. It is a season of
penance, reflection, and
fasting which prepares us for
Christ’s Resurrection on
Easter Sunday, through
which we attain redemption.
Following the example of the
Ninevites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes,
our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble
our hearts and remind us that life passes away
on Earth. We remember this when we are told:
“Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall
return.” Ashes are a symbol of penance made
sacramental by the blessing of the Church and they
help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.
The following prayer may be used at table,
particularly on days of fast and abstinence:
Blessed are you,
Lord, God of all creation;
you make us hunger and thirst
for holiness.
Blessed are you,
Lord, God of all creation:
you call us to true fasting;
to set free the oppressed,
to share our bread with the hungry,
to shelter the homeless
and to clothe the naked.
The ashes are made from the blessed palms used
in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous
year. The ashes are blessed with Holy Water and are
scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes
symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a
reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those
who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine
mercy is of utmost importance during the season of
Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that Mercy
during the entire Lenten season with reflection,
prayer, penance and almsgiving.

Gbtu!boe!Bctujofodf!
!
All Catholics who have reached their 14th
year are bound to abstain entirely from meat
on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59
inclusive are also bound to observe the law of
fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This
means limiting oneself to a single full meal and
avoiding food between meals. Two other light
meals, which together do not equal a full meal,
may be taken during the day.

Understanding the Sunday Readings:
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Collect asks that the Lord will keep us safe
as we rely “solely on the help of heavenly
grace.” The Prayer over the Offerings prays for
the transformation of the created realities we
offer, that is, bread and wine, so that just as they
are material sustenance for us, so too may they
become the “Sacrament of eternal life.” The
Prayer after Communion highlights the unity
of the faithful that is to be the result of their
participation in the Eucharist. Being united in
the one Body of Christ through the one Bread
and the one Chalice” is the way that we “joyfully
bear fruit for the salvation of the world.”
First Reading: Job’s story of restlessness,
sleeplessness and sadness is the story of many
people. His reflections on life’s drudgery,
however, are not his entire story. While he never
answers the question why God seems to permit
suffering, his experience teaches us that God is
faithful. What God asks of him, and of us, is to
be faithful in the midst of suffering, because as
humans, all of us will encounter suffering in one
form or another.
Responsorial Psalm 147: Today’s psalm is a
psalm of praise to the Lord. Knowing the reality
of human suffering, we sing praise to the Lord
who heals the brokenhearted. God’s goodness
and graciousness are signs of his faithfulness to
us as we live out our lives. God’s might and
power is as personal as his knowing how many
stars there are and calling each star by name.
Second Reading: Paul preaches the Gospel
without want of any reward. His desire is only
that all, whether weak or strong, might hear
the freedom the Gospel offers. Our mission is
nothing less than Paul’s mission: the proclamation of God’s grace in Christ Jesus through the
Gospel. We carry this mission out with the
confidence of Paul that we, too, will share in the
Gospel’s grace.

Gospel: At the conclusion of last Sunday’s
Gospel, we heard of the rapid expansion of
Jesus’ reputation based on his healing of the
man with an unclean spirit. Today’s Gospel
is another passage about healing which
begins with the individual healing of Simon’s
mother-in-law and then narrates the healing
of many in the entire town. After doing this
work, Jesus prays alone in a deserted place,
yet Simon and others follow him, telling him
that everyone is looking for him. Jesus knows
he must continue to preach and heal, and so
he goes forth from his short-lived place of
solitude.
