SCOTTISH BURNS NIGHT
FRIDAY 30th JANUARY 2015
Dear all,
I am delighted to invite you to our Burns Night event in aid of the poet Robert Burns who lived between 25th
January 1759 and 21st July 1796. Now in its 17th year this event is legendary in Dusseldorf!!
Robbie Burns is known as the Bard of Ayrshire and was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as
the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in
the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an
audience beyond Scotland.
He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and after his death he became a great source of
inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland. Celebration of his life
and work became almost a national charismatic cult during the 19th and 20th centuries, and his influence has long
been strong on Scottish literature. In 2009 he was chosen as the greatest Scot by the Scottish public in a vote run
by Scottish television channel STV.
There will be a formal Scottish dinner comprising Haggis and Neeps, Scottish Dancing and Bagpipe Music . We
are delighted to have the World Renowned David Johnston play the bagpipes who has also played for the HRH
The Queen! There will also be a charity raffle on the evening where there are lots of prizes to be won. In addition
amusing addresses to The Haggis, The Lassies ,The Laddies and to the Great Man himself.
