Current Newsletter - Bethel Grove Christian Church

2015
WHAT’S INSIDE THIS ISSUE
In November the pastoral search
committee of Jim Callaway, Judy Snyder,
and John Stewart met and gathered
resumes from several interested persons
for the position of pastor of Bethel
Grove Church. After prayer the
committee and elders invited Scott Hand
to meet with them and get to know him
and his beliefs. The committee and elders
were in agreement to recommend to the
Church Board that we call Scott Hand to
be our Pastor. The decision was taken to
the Board on Jan. 11 and the Board
approved the recommendation.
On Feb. 8, 2015, Scott will preach before
the congregation. On the following
Sunday, Feb. 15, according to the bylaws,
Covenant members will vote on the
possibility to call Scott Hand as our new
pastor.

It’s a new year and maybe you have just
forgotten to let the church office know
what your new email address is. Please do
so right away. Beginning March 1 if you
have an email address you will be receiving
the newsletter only by that means. The
office has been asked to try to cut costs
where we can so if we need to print fewer
newsletters that will save on Sarah’s time
and paper/ink costs. Thank you for your
cooperation with this. If you do not have
the ability to get the newsletter online, let
the office know that also and we will see
that you get a paper copy.

FAMILY, FRIENDS, FAITH
I have been successfully evading all those
people that want to find me around here
but I don't know how much longer that will
continue so I thought I'd better get a
quick article off while I still can. So much
new stuff!! And now I hear there is some
new guy coming in to talk to everyone soon.
I heard someone say he was going to tryout, but they didn't say what he would try
out, so I guess I'll just have to keep a
close eye on him - and his wife - and his
children -- all 5 of them! (Ed. Note: Scott
Hand will be preaching on February 8th.)
Everyone is now crowded into one big room
for all the singing and talking and eating.
Kind of exciting, but I wish I knew what
was coming next. Some people meet and
talk about it but I don't think they've
decided anything for sure yet. At least, I
haven't heard them say anything final. And
that paper they hand out once a month
didn't help. I do like the new calendar,
though. I can tell at a glance who is
bringing food - and who has a birthday. At
first I thought the full calendar meant
even more people at this building more
often. Looks real crowded. But it tells me
who is bringing food, and that's even more
important than just a bunch of people
around.
Not sure how much you will hear from me in
the future. I'm keeping pretty busy just
avoiding all the places people are cleaning.
If they get rid of too much more stuff, I
won't have any place to hide. Do you
suppose that's part of the motive?
PAGE 2
Beginning March 1st we will do things a bit
different around the church building. Because of
some budget cuts, we will be cleaning the
building on a volunteer basis. In order for this to
work well we would ask that each of you would
remember to do your part by cleaning up after
yourself. Picking up your bulletins, pop cans
coffee cups and the like. Each of the heads of
the executive teams will be asked to keep their
areas in order. If this happens, the cleaning
responsibilities to clean each week will be
lessened. A sign up sheet will be passed around
soon. The plan is for two families to sign up and
share the month. You may clean at your
convenience, including after worship on Sunday.
You may clean together or choose weeks that
work best for each of you. If you use the
building, please leave it in the condition or
better than you found it. If you need to vacuum
or take out trash please do that. Thanks. This
should take no more than 2 hours and less if we
all work together to keep things orderly. The
cleaning will include the following things.
1. Vacuum main hall and classrooms
2. Dust where needed
3. Sweep kitchen, bathrooms, and entrances.
Mop when needed.
4. Clean bathrooms weekly Replace paper towels
and toilet paper.
5. Remove trash from classrooms, kitchens,
fellowship halls. The pastor and secretary will
take care of their trash.
6. Straighten chairs, tables; pick up things left
on tables and chairs.
7. Water plants.
Again thanks for your help in advance. This is
just one more way to give back to the Lord, and
be a blessing to others.

Youth will once again be collecting pop
cans. Cans can be left outside (as long
as they are in bags) by the back door
and we will pick them up on Sundays.
We are also planning a couple of fund
raisers, one being a silent auction; so as
people are doing their "spring" cleaning,
please keep us in mind! We will be
looking for GOOD quality items or gifts
of service to auction off.
Our work trip us being planned for the
last week in July from the 26-30. We
are working with Greater Minneapolis
Council of Churches who coordinates
trips for the Urban Immersion Service
Retreat.

Take Time To Tithe
Tithing may be a dirty word in
some minds however it is a biblical
principal that believers need to
follow. Honestly the act of tithing
can be the greatest blessing in
you life. The Bible directs us to
set aside a tenth of all our bounty
or income and give it to the Lord
as a gift of thanksgiving for all
God has given you.
“Be sure to set aside a tenth of all
your fields produce each year. Eat
the tithe of your grain, new wine
and oil and the firstborn of your
herds and flocks in the presence
of the Lord your God at the place
he will choose as a dwelling for his
Name so that you may learn to
revere the Lord your God always”
(Deuteronomy 14:22-23 NIV).
In 2 Corinthians 9:12 we are
instructed in what the tithe
means. “This service that you
perform is not only supplying the
needs of God’s people, but is also
overflowing in many expressions
of thanks to God” (NIV). The
tithe is used to meet the needs of
God’s people – the way our
Outreach Ministry Team provides
funds for the many organizations
and individuals of their choosing.
The challenge is for you to sit
down as a family and evaluate your
budget with 10 percent set aside
as your tithes. Consider your
income (monthly/weekly/annually)
and take a tenth of that amount
to be your tithe. Divide it by how
often you want to make your tithe.
The remainder is the amount you
use for your life expenses. Make
your tithe commitment for a year
and put your trust in God to
provide for your needs. If you
trust God and spend wisely, your
needs will be more than met. Once
you begin tithing one-tenth you
will begin to see how God makes it
possible. If you absolutely don’t
believe you can make a tithe of
one-tenth work, start with a
smaller amount that you feel you
can handle, and work toward the
one-tenth.
For instance if your weekly income
is $100 divide it by ten (one
tenth) and it equals $10 per week.
If you get an additional one-time
amount, such as a tax refund, a
birthday gift, or an annual bonus,
take one-tenth of it as your tithe
before you spend or save the rest.
“Each man should give what he has
decided in his heart to give, not
reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver” (2
Corinthians 9:7 NIV).
Blessings,

Bethel Grove Church
In the spring of 1851 several elders and families who had come to the
area from Owen county Indiana, began worshipping in homes. After
being here for awhile they called an elder to help organize the first
church in Marshall County which was Bethel Grove Church of Christ.
Purpose: Bethel Grove Church exists for the purpose of
Striving as individuals
To know Jesus Christ and
To then make Him and His love known
To those around us.
