"Learning Without Limits ... Achievement For All"
Principal's Message- Mrs. A. Leidl
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a peaceful Christmas. The month of January will be
highlighted by the beginning of cross country skiing, final exams, and the start of our second
semester.
Farewell and Welcome
At the end of this month we say farewell to three CPS staff members. Laura Sveinbjornson,
Christy Lucas and Carrie Tanchyk will complete their term contracts on January 29, 2015-- We
have enjoyed having them part of our CPS team!
Hailey Schlamp, a 4th year Minot, ND education student will be interning with Nicole Clarke
and the grade 4/5 class from January 5 until April 2, 2015.
New Website
Our old website is retiring and in its place, the Good Spirit School Division has implemented a
portal to access all of its schools. You can access the CPS portal at:
http://www.gssd.ca/school/cps/Pages/default.aspx
We appreciate your patience and feedback as we transition to the new system.
Distributed Learning Update
GSSD is currently in the process of developing Distributed Courses (formerly known as
Distance). Distributed Courses are based out of satellite schools and are available to students
throughout GSSD and beyond. At CPS we have expanded our participation allowing for more
course opportunities for our students as soon as Semester 2, 2015. The following are courses
(tentatively) scheduled to be based out of CPS beginning Feb. 2, 2015: Math Workplace 10,
Wildlife Management 20, Energy & Mines 10. There is also potential for our Physics 30
students to register for Phys. Ed. 20/30. These students would complete the Phys. Ed. credit
via a combination of in-class and on-line learning. Please contact the office to discuss any of
these options or to register for classes.
Planning for 2015-2016
We are currently collecting enrolment numbers for our 2015-2016 school year. If you know of
future kindergarten or new students who will be attending CPS this fall, please contact Carmal
at the office during the month of January, 2015. Our staffing allotment is determined by the
number of identified students so we appreciate your assistance!
Assembly
Our next school assembly will be on Wednesday, January 14 at 11:10 in the school gymnasium.
Veronica DePape will be on hand to make a check presentation to the school from the Baba’s
Christmas fundraiser. All parents and community members are welcome to attend.
SCC Meeting
The School Community Council meets on Tuesday, January 20 @ 7:00 pm in the library at CPS.
All parents and community members are welcome to attend.
Professional Development
Students will not attend school on Friday, January 30. Staff will prepare for Semester 2 and
take part in Professional Development sessions.

Kindergarten - Mrs. E. Badowich
Happy New Year! In January the Kindergarteners will be studying about winter weather,
penguins, and bears. We will have fun in making snowflakes, snowmen, penguins, and glittery
snow scenes. In reading we will be learning both vowel and consonant sounds of the alphabet.
We will continue on blending sounds and reading 3 letter short vowel words, referred to as
CVC (consonant vowel consonant words). We continue to introduce new sight words in
preparation for journal writing. In math, the children will be learning numbers 1 to 20,
interpret graphs, estimating, and the concept of more and less. It has been great seeing the
reading logs being completed and thank you for reinforcing positive, respectful school
behavior. Thank you for all the support and thank you for partnering with me in making your
child’s kindergarten experience the best it can be!
Grade One - Mrs. C. Haacke
December really flew by as the students enjoyed all the Gingerbread activities, which helped
them to practice their reading, spelling, writing and math skills. It was awesome to see the
students sharing their candy and taking pleasure in building their Gingerbread houses and
decorating their cookies. Right off the hop this month the students will be evaluated on their
reading levels. It will be exciting to see how they have progressed with their reading skills since
the beginning of the year. Students will have the opportunity this month to virtually visit the
South Pole and discover the amazing life of Penguins.
Happy New Year from the Grade One Class
Grade 2 - Mrs. P. Werle
Happy New Years from our Grade 2 class! We will be starting the New Year off with a Winter
Unit. The Science focus will be solids and liquids which will involve some experiments and
exploration. In Math, we are continuing addition and subtraction. Students can practice their
addition facts at home. At the end of the month I will be assessing some of the student's
reading. I'm really impressed with their reading improvement and appreciate all the reading
practice that is taking place at home. I'm excited to start off the New Year after a restful
Christmas vacation!
Gr. 3 - Ms. L. Kentel
I would like to congratulate the Gr. 3 class on doing a super job busting a move at the
Christmas concert. I was very proud of how well my students performed!
We would like to say good-bye to Robert Pelletier who has moved to Langenburg. We will miss
him in our classroom and wish him luck at Hoffman School.
Just a reminder that students should be working on their math facts on Xtra Math at home, as
well as reading at least 15 min daily!!
Grade 4/5 News
Now that Christmas has come and gone we are back at school working hard. First of all I am
very excited to extend a huge welcome Ms. Schlamp. She is an intern from Minot State
University who is working on completing her internship in our grade 4/5 classroom until
Easter. We are all very excited to have her join us!!
I would also like to extend a big thank you to Jerry Kaeding for all of his help with the curling
classes. A big thank you as well to all the parents that have been available to help tie skates
on our skating days. Make sure to check the skating and curling schedule that went home
before Christmas.
Just a friendly reminder to please sign and return agendas every day. Thank you!!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Haily Schlamp and I am delighted to have the opportunity to do my student teaching for
the next 12 weeks in Churchbridge. Mrs. Nicole Clarke, has graciously offered to allow me to practice
teach in her classroom and I am extremely excited to be working and learning all I can from her. I
will complete my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education at Minot State University in May, after
which I plan to teach full time in the surrounding area. I am originally from Esterhazy and have been
going to school in Minot for the past 3 1/2 years. It's always been a passion of mine to become an
elementary teacher and have been involved with children all my life. I have worked at Esterhazy day
care, volunteered in a preschool classroom, organized all kinds of school programs, and was a
mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am looking forward to applying the philosophies I have been
taught in University and methods from my prior experiences inside a classroom and get involved with
the school and the students as much as I can over the next 12 weeks.
Sincerely,
Ms. Haily Schlamp
Grade 6 News
We will be going on a field trip to Yorkton on January 9th, to learn about Saskatchewan. In
ELA and Social Studies, we are learning about our Canadian identity. In French, we are learning
about body parts. In Physical Education class, we will be going skating and curling
during January. Make sure to be prepared with skates, helmets, and brooms! Our class is
working on a positive ticket reward. The reward is cooking, we need 400 positive tickets to
reach our goal.

SR. SRC
The SRC held a Christmas week during the last week of school. Grades 7-12 were served hot
chocolate and candy canes, wore Santa Hats and dressed formal for the Grade 12 banquet. In
the New Year we will be planning our We Day, buy a goat for a toonie fundraiser, support the
annual Telemiracle, and make preparations for our second annual school dance. Happy New
Year!
NEWS FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICE – Mrs. Kaminski
PX2 – “the path to success” was offered to our grade 11 students in December. This is a two day session that
is designed to teach our students how to succeed in life after grade 12. Thank you to Susan Weinheimer for
facilitating this program and to the Good Spirit School Division for supplying the funding for it.
There are a few dates I would like parents and grade 11 and 12 students to keep in mind:

Student high school transcripts requests are available online using VISA, VISA debit and Master at
http://www.education.gov.sk.ca/transcripts. For students who have ordered transcripts, please ensure
that you receive two confirmation emails after your order is placed online to the Ministry of Education.
One will confirm your order, and the other will confirm payment. Keep a copy of these emails to show
that these were ordered and paid for. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact the
Ministry of Education to see if there was an error in processing. You may order up to 5 copies for $20.
Any additional copies will be $2.00 each. All requests are summarized on your confirmation email so
please check to see that all of your requests were submitted correctly.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic CSI (Come, See and Investigate). The Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses
often have dates when students are encouraged to come and tour the campus and to ask questions. If
you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please contact the campus through their website
at saskpolytech.ca, to find out if a session is being offered in your preferred program or call
Saskatchewan Polytechnic directly at 1-866-467-4278.

Grade 12 students who are interested in applying to Saskatchewan Polytechnic should have done so
already. Students in grade 10 and 11 can begin to apply for programs that they have met the minimum
requirement for (meaning grade 10 or grade 11). If they are accepted, they can defer their seat until
they graduate from high school.
For all other high demand programs, entry is competitive and there is a designated time frame to apply within.
Application forms are available at the saskpolytech.ca website where you can send them electronically or print
off a copy to send in the mail.

The Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship program is for students in grade 10-12 who are considering a
skilled trade as a career. It is designed to help students earn 300 apprenticeship hours prior to entering

10, 20 or 30 should already be registered as part of these classes. If you are interested in completing the
passport required to earn these 300 hours, you can find a copy of this on the Saskatchewan Youth
Apprenticeship website. Please see Mrs. Kaminski, Mr. Helgesen or Mr. Hrywkiw for more details about
this program or visit their website at www.saskapprenticeship.ca

The lunch program would like to send out a great big thank you to everyone who helped with
our Christmas Dinner. Thank you to the over 20 volunteers who helped prepare and serve the
meal along with the students and staff who helped set up and clean up after the dinner. Our
school is so fortunate to have such great volunteers!!
How do I help build my child’s vocabulary?
 Read, read, read!!! Books provide a great tool for exposing children to new language.
When you come across a new word, stop and talk about it. Reread the same story as
many times as your child would like, as repeated exposure to these same words will
make it more likely that the words will “stick”.
 Play word games to encourage a deeper understanding of vocabulary:
o Stoplight: Come up with as many members of a category as you can before the
light turns green.
o Hot Potato: Play Hot Potato with similes (words that mean the same thing; i.e.
happy, joyful etc.). With younger students, use categories. Whoever has the
potato must name a simile or member of a category before passing the potato on.
