January 2015 PO Box 431 Union Gospel Mission of Salem • Salem Oregon 97308 • 503-967-6388 • www.ugmsalem.org A NEW LIFE IN A NEW YEAR Chris grew up in a large family in Southern California. Church was a big part of the family’s regular activities until Chris’s mom died when he was only 7 years old. After his mom’s death, Chris moved to South Central Los Angeles to live with his dad. Unfortunately for Chris, gangs became a large influence in his life and he began to use drugs on a regular basis. another program participant. Chris has already benefitted a great deal from his involvement in the NLF. “It is teaching me patience and humility. I’ve always been the strong one in my family and with my friends. I’m becoming more open to receiving help from others.” With the help and initiative of UGM program staff, Chris is learning to trust in the strong and patient love of Jesus. “The Mission is a great place to heal.” Chris attended UCLA and earned a degree in computer science. Soon after graduating, Chris took a job and moved to Las Vegas. Las Vegas provided him with an opportunity for a new start while remaining close enough to drive home to see his aging father. After a couple years, Chris’s dad passed away and Chris got into trouble with the law. After serving a three year sentence, Chris moved to East Texas for another job. A change of scenery still included plenty of opportunities to use drugs and party. This led Chris to a breaking point. Because of your faithful support and prayers, many men, women and children have hope for a new life in this New Year! Please join us in praying for Chris as he embarks on a new journey of healing and service. If you were to ask Chris what he is looking forward to in 2015, he would tell you: “I’m looking forward to becoming more equipped and prepared to serve others. The mission is helping me to better understand myself and others.” Chris’s favorite scripture, Psalm 119:105, is coming alive in his life as he grows in his dependence upon Jesus and His word, “a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” “GOD WAS TELLING ME THERE WAS SOMETHING MORE” One morning Chris woke up and had the strong sense that God was telling him to pack up his things and leave. “It seemed like God was telling me there was something more,” Chris said. For the next eighteen months, Chris traveled to over 160 cities looking to find the place where God wanted him. His journey eventually led him to Portland, Oregon, where a man on the streets shared with him about the recovery program at UGM of Salem. To read more inspiring stories, like Chris’s, visit www.ugmsalem.org. The Mission is serving over 700 meals a day! Chris came to UGM of Salem in September 2014 and joined the New Life Fellowship Program after being invited by Financed entirely through the generous and caring gifts of individuals, churches, foundations and other organizations. Del is a native of Salem and the former President/CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission. With over 25 years of service in rescue ministry, including over five years of consulting at UGM of Salem, Del brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience to the position. This opportunity became available when Michael Rideout, the President and CEO of the Union Gospel Mission of Salem submitted his resignation to the Board of Directors effective November 18, 2014 in order to deal with some important personal matters. The Board has regretfully accepted his resignation and thanks Mike for his years of service to the Mission. For more than 60 years, thousands of volunteers, donors and staff have been providing nutritious meals, warm, safe shelter, and life-changing recovery programs through the life-changing message of Jesus Christ at UGM of Salem. The mission will continue to serve neighbors in need and advance its many community initiatives. From Del Maxfield: It is an honor to have been selected by the Board of Directors to serve as the interim President/CEO. While change is always challenging, we, here at the Union Gospel Mission see God’s involvement in these times. I have been closely associated with UGM for nearly seven years in various capacities and am looking forward to being even more involved as the Mission moves forward with the many programs and projects that are in our future. Touching the lives of hurting and hungry people has been at the center of my own Spiritual journey for over 30 years, and there is nowhere I could continue the Lord’s work in that capacity more than here at Union Gospel Mission of Salem. Thank you for your prayers and support as we minister during this beautiful season of the year. “Restoring Hope . . . Restoring Lives” “Restoring Hope . . . Restoring Lives” Mission & Purpose Union Gospel Mission, a Christ-centered ministry demonstrating God’s love by meeting physical, mental and spiritual needs of men, women and children in crisis. Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in word and deed. Partnering with churches, individuals and organizations to maximize our effectiveness, we help the neediest of our community break the cycle of homelessness, addiction and incarceration as men and women experience dynamic transformation in following Christ, and become contributing members of our community. Core Values Christ-Centered — He is the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end. Everything that we are and do is measured by knowing Him, sharing Him and growing in our relationship with Him. Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:25, 28 Client-Focused — By our faith in Jesus Christ, we are called to demonstrate love, grace and compassion as we serve and enrich the lives of others. Galatians 5:14; Romans 5:8; Mark 6:34 Community-Connected — Transformation and growth happen in community and in collaboration with others. Jeremiah 29:7; 1 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 4:3 Programs and Services • • • • • • • • • • • Meals, Emergency Shelter, Clothing Assessment & Referral Services Addiction Recovery Services Chapel Services and Bible Studies Individual & Group Counseling Adult Education Employment Services Dental Clinic Thrift Store Community Outreach Transitional Housing Board of Directors Lee Klampe, Chairman Lon Huff, Vice Chairman Mike Roberson, Secretary Bob Thompson, Treasurer Jay Campbell Candi Hughes Daniel Schanz Del Maxfield, President/CEO www.ugmsalem.org www.ugmsalem.org | 3| 3 MEMORY AND STEWARDSHIP Kyle Dickinson // Vice President of Advancement “So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “… Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” Joshua 4:4-8 (NIV) 2014 was a year of great change at UGM of Salem. We said goodbye to staff who had served faithfully and greeted new staff with a passion to serve the hungry, hurting and homeless of our community. In July, the Mission Store was significantly affected by a three-alarm fire. With every great obstacle comes a great opportunity to serve and lead. It was inspiring to see volunteers and Mission Store staff step up to keep the store running at a high level, and, thanks to our friends at Dalke Construction and Arbuckle Costic Architects, we are continuing to see progress. We anticipate a grand reopening in the next couple of months. Joshua 1-4 tells a story of a key moment in the history of the Israelites. They were a people in transition on the verge of a great moment – entering the Promised Land. In Joshua 4:4-8, Joshua commanded the leaders to take stones from the Jordan River bed in order to remember how God had delivered them. These stones would serve as conversation points about God’s faithfulness with future generations. When you look back on 2014, how has God been faithful to you? What are your “memorial stones”? God promised the Israelites that they would be blessed to be a blessing to all nations. God set a standard of stewardship for His people. In all things and at all times, God’s people have an opportunity to steward their time, talents and even treasure for the sake of others. The connection between memorial stones and stewardship is this: God has delivered His people and they are to be a blessing to others. The same invitation comes to us. God blesses us so that we can bless others. This is how we honor the memory of how God has delivered us. It is my prayer that you would remember how God faithfully blessed you over the past year and that you would continue to steward those blessings in a way that honors Him. “Restoring Hope . . .
