The Presentation of the Lord
If you have not already taken down your Christmas decorations (I took mine
down just last week!), you should not feel too badly. At one time in the history of
the church, the feast that we celebrate tomorrow (February 2), the Presentation of
the Lord, was the day that closed the Christmas season. We have already entered
Ordinary Time and the last few weeks we have heard the Gospel stories of Jesus
calling His disciples. The readings for this feast tell us the story of two disciples,
Anna and Simeon, who in their own wonderful way, proclaim who Jesus is.
When Simeon saw the infant Jesus, he gave praise to God. He also
prophesies that Jesus is to be a sign that will be contradicted and that a sword will
pierce the heart of Mary, referring to the pain she will suffer as she sees her Son on
the cross. Anna, in seeing the infant, gives thanks to God and spoke to others about
Jesus. You might say Anna was one of the first evangelizers.
What happens when the Lord is presented to us? Like Simeon, do we praise
and thank God for His love and presence to us? Do we acknowledge all the good we
have comes from God? How do we make a return to the Lord for all that He has
done for us? Like Anna, when we witness or experience God working in our lives,
do we go out and “give thanks to God and speak about Him to all who are awaiting
His coming?”

Census Update
Recently letters were sent out with census update cards to those who have
not yet responded. I ask that the card be filled out and either mailed to or dropped
off at the Ministry Center. You may also put the card in the collection basket. The
census update will allow our parish staff to be of better service to all of the
parishioners so it is very important that all currently registered parishioners
participate. If we do not hear from you by February 20, the office staff will
attempt to reach you by phone or e-mail. Thank you in advance!

FEBRUARY 2015:
Food Collection Month
for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry
February is one of the two months in
each year St. James collects food to
help stock The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry
shelves. During 2014 the Pantry
supplied food to 21,500 people, an
increase of 18%. A total of 860,000 lbs.
of food was distributed. Because of the
continued generous support the pantry
receives from St. James, other Glen
Ellyn churches, community
organizations, and the new Direct
Connect Program, a partnership with
local retailers, the pantry was able to
meet the additional requests.
The increased requests resulted in
increased need for volunteer services.
Volunteers donate a minimum of 2 to 3
hours each month to help fill orders,
stock shelves and pickup food donated
by retailers. In winter the pantry has a
drop in volunteer services. Many
volunteers leave the area for their
winter homes. If you wish to volunteer,
call Terri at 630-469-8688. Terri will
be happy to arrange a time convenient
for you.

2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
Extending God’s Mercy
Bishop Conlon’s recent mailing asking for a pledge
to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
(CMAA) is now in the hands of many of our
parishioners. If you have received the mailing, please
respond as soon as possible. If you have not received
the mailing, please call the Ministry Center at 630469-7540.
This year, the theme of the appeal is, “Extending
God’s Mercy”. Pope Francis recently said that mercy
“goes beyond in such a way that sin is put to the
side. It is like heaven. We look at the sky, there are
many, many stars; but when the sun rises in the
morning, the light is such that we can’t see the stars.
God’s mercy is like that: a great light of love and
tenderness.”
We are called by the Gospel to be a light unto
others. By showing mercy to those in need, by
helping build the Kingdom in our own parish and
our own diocese, we are like the morning light.
Please shine bright by making a gift to the CMAA.
The CMAA funds the mission and ministries of our
diocese. It also funds services that are of great help
to the ministries of our own parish. Please answer
the bishop’s request and make a generous pledge.
All pledges can be paid in 10 installments. Thank
you in advance for your support.

Parish Library Update
At its last meeting recently, the St. James the Apostle
Library Committee created the library mission
statement. It reads as follows: “The mission of the St.
James the Apostle Parish Library is to provide inspiration and
spiritual knowledge. Ultimately and ideally, this knowledge
will deepen our faith and relationship with the Lord,
motivating us to living a life of Christian charity and service.”
We are currently working on the cataloguing of
books and hope to have the library “grand opening”
sometime this spring. Watch for updates in the
bulletin!

Community Ministries
Please Help Us Be Fair in Our Efforts
to Help Those In Need
The Diocese has sent out information regarding the
less than honest people who routinely stand outside
of various parishes of the diocese with children,
some in strollers, asking for a handout. In each case,
they have been asked to come inside the parish,
speak with the priest and fill out the information
they are asked to complete in order to receive
charity from the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They
repeatedly refuse to do so. Please refrain from
giving to these people. They do not honestly
represent themselves or their current situation.
Volunteers Needed
The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry needs temporary or
permanent volunteers to fill spots left vacant by
other volunteers who have gone south for the winter.
Our biggest need is for our direct connect ‘retail’
food pickup program. Food pickup starts anytime
from 8:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. Spots are open Monday
through Friday. It requires approximately 2 hours of
your time. You can pick up once a month, weekly or
any other combinations that works for you. Other
volunteer opportunities are also available. Call Terri
at 630-469-6988 for more details.
We want your old car!
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul accepts cars
whether they are running or not. Cars in good
running condition are given away to needy families
in the community to help keep their jobs. Cars not
running or in need of major repair are towed, at no
cost to you, at auction or salvage. Tax receipts are
gladly given and donors names are kept confidential.
Call us at 630-293-9755
for info or to donate your car!!
(When you call please have the car title with you.)
If you encounter anyone in our parking lots during
the weekend Masses, please alert one of our parish
deacons. In addition, you may always direct
someone in need to the information box located
outside the door of the Ministry Center with flyers
that contain a list of where those in need may
contact resources, including our own St. Vincent de
Paul Society. Using their system to minister to those
in need, the St. James St. Vincent de Paul Society
will use your contributions to their ministry for
your intended purpose of helping the poor in our
area. Thank you for helping us to help others.
