Happy Valentine’s Day. You are all my valentines.
Just a reminder, our VITA volunteers will be here to start doing income taxes. They
will be here Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday starting February 3rd. The hours are
9 am; 10 am; 11 am; 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm. Please call for an appointment.
Back in September of 2006 we received our 2006 Startrans Ford E 350 passenger and
two wheelchair capabilities Van. Our plans will be to
replace the Van in 2016. Currently the Van has
124,351 miles. In 2014 our van went 15,395 miles for
1,764 one way trips. This Van is primary used for
medical transport including dialysis. We spent over
$2,000 in maintenance and repair costs in 2014. We
feel this vehicle will have outlived its useful life. We
travel to Soin, Greene Memorial, Wright Patt, Good
Sam North, Miami Valley South, Springfield Regional,
Southview, Grandview and Miami Valley Hospitals and
all the Doctors around these local hospitals, Medical
facilities in Fairborn, Xenia, Beavercreek and Huber
Heights just to name a few. In discussion with our Transportation Department, we feel
that it is time to replace this vehicle. In researching costs for this vehicle replacement,
we are looking at approximately $80,000 to replace our van. We will be applying for
assistance in purchasing this vehicle through Federal Transit Administration. We have
purchased vehicles before using the Federal Transit Administration Program. When
ordering the vehicle, we will need to make a one-time payment equal to 20% of the
value of the vehicle being purchased. We are so fortunate to be able to work with this
organization to obtain this new vehicle. We need your help. In the next year and half
we will need assistance in raising the $16,000. Please consider making a donation to
our Van fund. As we fondly refer to her as 085, we appreciate the mileage she has
taken us and looking forward to continuing traveling with her until 2016.
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS. WE APPRECIATE ALL
YOU DO FOR US.
Remember our Christmas in Action program is still taking applications. If you or you
know someone that is in need of home repairs and lives in City of Fairborn, please
have them contact me at 937-878-4141. We will go over application process.

CARE COORDINATION
The OSHIIP-certified Care Coordination staff can guide you through the complicated Medicare process.
Before you turn 65 or change an existing Medicare plan, make an appointment to discuss your options.
The staff also directs clients to sources for house and yard work, transportation, personal care, shopping,
meals, and home health care. In addition, they provide crisis intervention for eviction, food, utility shut-off,
and family issues. You might be surprised how they can help you. Reach Care Coordination at: 878-4141,
extension 215. We are in need of volunteers!
HEAP applications are available here at the center and we have three people to help you fill them out and
to make copies of your originals to send along. This year you may re-verify PIPP Plus along with it at the
same time. So for that you may need a little more information however that is all explained on the
application form itself.
OHIO KEPRO is Quality Improvement Organization to advocate for those on Medicare and who are having a
problem. In this state you can call toll free 1-855-408-8557 and their fax # is 1-844-834-7130.
Medicare beneficiaries have the right to: 1) File a quality of care complaint with the QID (KEPRO); 2) File an
appeal of their discharge from a hospital, skilled nursing facility, home health agency, or a hospice; 3)
Request Immediate Advocacy for immediate concerns. Medicare beneficiaries can file a complaint about
the quality of care that they received from a Medicare provider. KEPRO will have one of our physicians
review the medical record. He/she will determine if the beneficiary received the right care. If the right care
was not provided, the provider may be placed on a Quality Improvement plan for monitoring. Education
may also be provided in the area of concern. All complaints are not able to be addressed by a medical
record review. Examples of what can be reviewed: Misdiagnosis, Medication management,
Appropriateness of medical treatment. Examples of what cannot be reviewed: Rude behavior, Dirty
hospital room, Conversation, Care that occurred more than 3 years ago. Medicare beneficiaries have the
right to appeal their discharge from a: Hospital, Skilled nursing facility, Home health agency, Outpatient
rehabilitation, Hospice. The hospital staff is required to issue a Medicare beneficiary a notice called the
Important Message from Medicare. It explains the discharge appeal rights and provides the discharge
appeal telephone number. The beneficiary can call KEPRO and our Peer Reviewer will review the medical
record and determine if the beneficiary should stay longer. In all other instances besides a hospital
discharge, the beneficiary will be issued a notice called the Notice of Non Coverage. It explains the
discharge appeal rights and provides the discharge appeal telephone number. The beneficiary can call
KEPRO and our Peer Reviewer will review the medical record and determine if the beneficiary should
stay longer or if skilled services should continue. If Medicare beneficiary have immediate concerns, they
can call KEPRO and ask of an Immediate Advocacy. Our social workers can assist with working out
concerns with a provider. It is a voluntary effort for both the beneficiary and the provider.
Just one more note about Medicare for this month and it is this: If you have enrolled in a Medicare
Advantage plan and are not satisfied you may return to Original Medicare and enroll in a Medicare Plan D
(for drugs). However, you may not go into another Medicare Advantage plan unless you suddenly have
qualified for Extra Help which you did not have before you signed up during Open Enrollment in 2014.
Without the extra Help designation you will have to stay with the Original Medicare until next Open
Enrollment comes up and then you may choose something else for the following year. This opportunity is
good until February 14th only. ---Nina, Connie and Karen

TRANSPORTATION
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Tired of hearing “Weather Permitting” when you set up a ride? Well Charlotte and Jim are tired of saying it
and then having to follow through and cancel transportation because there IS severe weather. Mother
Nature has not been kind this winter and she probably still has some additional surprises to deliver before
summer arrives. We will do our best to deliver the rides you have scheduled. However, your and our driver’s
safety is of primary concern when Mother Nature decides to give us another wintery blast. If it isn’t safe, we
will cancel transportation until it is safe.
As most of you know, on a priority basis, your Transportation Services Department provides rides to medical
appointments. But, did you know that, on a space available basis, we will also take you to just about any
other type appointment or place that you want to go, that is within our normal driving areas? Yes it’s true! If
you need to get your hair done at your favorite beauty parlor or barber shop, go to the bank, grocery store,
dry cleaners or coin laundry, etc.; just give us a call and set up a ride. How about going shopping at the Mall
at Fairfield Commons or to some other business, or maybe meet the “gang” for lunch at your favorite
restaurant!
Again, just give us a call and we will see if space is available. If it is and the weather permits, we will be
happy to take you. AS A REMINDER, we are not allowed to provide “same day transportation.” That means a
ride the same day you call or if you call after 12:30 PM the working day before your desired ride. However,
because of cancellations, if you call before 12:30 PM on the working day prior to the day you want a ride, we
may be able to fit you into the schedule, if space is available!
We also are asking for your help. If you know a senior citizen 60 years old or older, residing in Fairborn or
Bath Township, that could use our services, ask them to call us at 878-4141 ext. 216 and request a FREE
sign up package. That way, they can get registered as Transportation Services client and be able to take
advantage of our services. They DO NOT need to be a member of the Fairborn Senior Center, although we
would like them to become members, to take advantage of ANY of the Fairborn Senior Center’s services.
Remember to be happy and think warm thoughts. Spring will eventually arrive!
Jim & Charlotte
TRANSPORTATION
The Center’s vehicles operate Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30 pm. Schedule medical
appointments up to thirty days in advance. Next day transportation is provided only if space is available and
requested by 12:30pm the day before. There is no same day transportation available. Schedule
transportation by calling 878-4141, extension 216.

HEALTH, SUPPORT AND LEGAL ADVICE
The Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group meets the
third Wednesday at noon, here at the Fairborn Senior
Center. February 18th.
Coffee and Conversation. Just need to talk it
out? Come share some Coffee & Conversation with
Phil Hohulin, Spiritual Care Coordinator, at the
Hospice of the Miami Valley. We all experience grief
when we lose something of value to us. Retirement,
down-sizing, loss of a pet, disabilities, death of a
loved one and many other losses bring on a variety
of emotions and physical reactions. It is healing and
helpful to have others to talk things through
with. You are not alone. Hope to see you on the 2nd
Tuesday of the month at 1:00 pm. February 10th.
The R.A.P. (Relative as Parents) group, designed for
grandparents raising grandkids and other kinship
caregivers, meets the second Tuesday of the month,
10:00am at the Faith Community United Methodist
Church in Xenia. Call 1-937-376-5486 for more
information.
Free Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar Clinic,
sponsored by Wright Nursing & Rehabilitation, on the
second Tuesday; 10:00am to 11:00am.
February 10th.
Free Hearing Aid Clinic, provided by Fairborn
Hearing Aid Center, 209 West Main Street, on the
third Friday from 9:00am to noon, February 20th.
Please Call or sign up at the desk beforehand.
Attorney David J. Cusack from Beavercreek hosts
the Legal Hour on the 4th Tuesday of the month.
February’s topic is: “Health Care Advance Directives
and Powers of Attorney”. Mr. Cusack will review and
explain the main health care advance directives in
Ohio-–the Ohio Living Will and the Ohio Health Care
Power of Attorney. He will also explain powers of
attorney for things other than health care (i.e.
financial matters). Do I need a Living Will? What’s
the difference between a Living Will and a Health
Care Power of Attorney? What can my agent in a

discussing the same book as last time.
WOLF HALL by Hilary Mantel (604
pp). England in the 1520s is a
heartbeat from disaster. If the king
dies without a male heir, the country
could be destroyed by civil war. Henry
VIII wants to annul his marriage of 20
years and marry Anne Boleyn. The
pope and most of Europe oppose
him. Into this impasse steps Thomas
Cromwell: a wholly original man, a
charmer and a bully, both idealist and
opportunist, astute in reading people,
and implacable in his ambition. But
Henry is volatile--one day tender, one
day murderous. Cromwell helps him
break the opposition, but what will be
the price of his trimph?
February 3rd at 11:30am.
The Foxy Reds will dine at Flying Tiger,
Fairborn . We hope to see everyone
there.
