INDEPENDENT READING PROJECT: Theme Collage
OVERVIEW
1. Select and read a novel.
2. Identify at least three themes in the novel. Provide evidence and analysis. (50 points)
3. Create a collage and write a theme analysis about a major theme in the novel. (50 points)
DUE DATES
1. Theme Selection Check—Thursday Feb. 12.
2. Theme Collage and Notebook Work due Thursday, Feb. 26.
PART 1—(50 points)
NOTEBOOK WORK: Search for, identify and analyze at least three themes in the novel
How do you find themes? As you read, ask the following questions:
• What lessons do the main characters—or you, the reader—learn?
• What interesting realities or possibilities does the novel make you consider?
• What ideas does this story share with other stories you have read/watched/experienced?
What should your notebook work look like?
• WRITE A HEADING ON EACH PAGE that includes the TITLE OF YOUR NOVEL, the DATE, and “THEME COLLAGE”
You should have at least THREE THEME PAGES (one per theme, 10 points each)
• PROVIDE EVIDENCE: Write a QUOTE, DETAIL, or CONNECTION, and include the PAGE NUMBER from your novel
• PROVIDE ANALYSIS: What does it mean? Why is it an important idea? Why is it important to the novel?
• LEAVE ROOM on the page to add more evidence and analysis as you continue to read
You should have at least TWO PLANNING PAGES (20 points)
• Include your LIST OF POSSIBLE THEME IDEAS as you read the first part of the book
• Include your NOTES FROM LESSONS IN CLASS about the project
• Include any QUESTIONS YOU HAVE about the project…
• Include the ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS, from in class discussion or extra help
• Include a clear explanation of YOUR PLANS FOR THE COLLAGE, including materials, sketches or descriptions
• Include three or more DATED ENTRIES DESCRIBING THE WORK DONE OUTSIDE OF CLASS to prepare the collage
• Include any other discussion/reflection on the process of working on this project
PART 2—(50 points)
CREATE A COLLAGE and write a brief analysis about one major theme from your novel

PRESENT YOUR THEME IN A COLLAGE of pictures and/or words (40 points)
The collage may include personal artwork, “borrowed” images from magazines, photographs, or the internet,
and printed, written, or cut-out words
The collage should have MINIMAL EMPTY SPACE on the page
The collage must INCLUDE AN ATTACHED PARAGRAPH ANALYZING THE THEME, INCLUDING AT LEAST TWO PIECES
OF EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT, PROPERLY CITED (page number, author) (10 points)
MAXIMUM SIZE—11”x17” (half of a poster board); MINIMUM SIZE—8½”x11” (standard paper size)
