Renn Organ There is another chance to hear St. George’s new Renn Organ in all its glory. This time Gabrielle Lewis will give a recital with music by Bach, Buxtehude and César Franck amongst others. Gabrielle is a fully trained teacher of piano, flute and singing as well as an organ teacher with many diplomas to hand. She plays the organ for her local Jinny Marshall dropped us a line to remind us that the first spring bulbs are emerging in Mortimer Gardens. 1000 crocus bulbs and 180 hyacinths were paid for by NTC and planted there in the autumn by the Gardening Group of the Nailsworth Society. They should look really colourful in Feb/March so keep looking for them! More volunteers are always welcome - if you would like to join the team, please get in touch with the Editor. 2 Local Affairs Myles Robinson, Mayor of Nailsworth The Town Council has recently set the budget for the year 2015–2016 financial year. These are challenging times to set a budget, when we first have to acknowledge that there is no appetite for increasing the Council Tax, but at the same time, we have to make provision for the services we do provide and meet the needs and aspirations of residents. After our establishment and democratic costs, our biggest expenditure is support for the Youth Club and community work. There are around 200 young people between the ages of 8 and 18 attending the Junction Youth Club on the corner of Spring Hill and Northfield Road each week, in addition to those attending the two weekly sessions at the Arkell Centre. The next biggest expense is on buildings. Nailsworth Town Council maintains venues for community use at the Town Hall and the Mortimer Room in Old Market, as well as being trustees to the manager of the Arkell Centre in Forest Green. There are a wide range of activities taking place regularly including drama, films, exercise classes, lectures, art exhibitions and meetings, as well as commercial and private events. We try and keep booking fees for community use at a low level, but these facilities need to be maintained to an appropriate and attractive standard. We maintain land and gardens for recreational use and this becomes our third largest expense. As well as keeping up the gardens in town, the Council owns other sites, most significantly The King George V Playing Fields off Wood Lane, Miles Marling Field in Forest Green, Bunting Hill and Norton Wood. We have recently re-roofed the changing rooms at King George V Field and provided new children’s and gym equipment at two sites. Bunting Hill and Norton Wood provide pleasant semi wild areas, but managing woodland with safe public access requires plenty of tree maintenance and surgery. Your Town Council believes that we need to do more than just maintain what we have and that improvements to the recreational facilities still need to be made. We have the opportunity to make a new Community Park at the Miles Marling Field, and Nailsworth Town Councillors are holding an Open Session and Display between 10am and 12 noon on Saturday 7th February at The Arkell Centre to get the views of residents. I hope to see you there and have a chat over a cup of coffee. In the meantime, with funding already secured, progress is being made on the Multi Use Games Area within the school grounds. The Town Council is optimistic that agreement can be reached on an acceptable lease for the space needed, and a planning application will then be made. Residents will then have the opportunity to express their views on a managed floodlit area which will be available to clubs and local community groups outside school hours. Stroud District Council News point. Middle Tynings residents, have worked really hard to pull together to form a group to look into providing play equipment and seating areas for residents, monitor footpaths, dog fouling and road issues of concern. District Councillors, Steve Robinson and Emma Sims stood clearly in support of the Save the Valley, campaign at the Development Control Committee in January. Now, residents of Nailsworth can celebrate after the refusal was given for the development at Pike Lane. This is a coup for everyone who put their passion and commitment into fighting to stop this unwanted proposal. The applicants have six months to appeal however, we hope this isn’t a short lived victory. Of course, we want people to come and live here and we want to provide homes local people can afford to live in. Beginning on Tuesday 24th February at 7.30 pm in Christ Church and Wednesday 25th February at 2.00 pm at St. George’s Church, there will be five sessions at the same time and place. They will last for around 90 minutes and will include an introduction from one of the churches, a time of discussion and feedback and a short time of worship followed by refreshments. They are open to anyone – please just turn up on the day – you would be most welcome. Nailsworth Dramatic Society presents Agatha Christie After the success of “Fawlty Towers” in November, NDS return to the Town Hall stage in March with another classic – an Agatha Christie whodunit called “Witness for the Prosecution”. This was one of Christie’s most popular plays and a huge success when first performed on the London stage in the 1950’s. It is a story with several twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the very end. Who did kill wealthy Emily French? Was it burglars? The young gentleman caller? His German wife? Her own housekeeper? Christie said it was her favourite play and it has been made into two films – a 6 times Oscar nominated one in 1957 ( with Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich) and again in 1972 (with Diana Rigg and Ralph Richardson). Do put the date in your diary. Performances will be from Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st March. There were two delighted winners of the Nailsworth Christmas Pudding hunt, who each received their prizes on Christmas Eve. Alfie Mustoe was the first name out of the hat for the children’s hamper and Lucinda White from Nailsworth won the adult’s prize. Alfie, from Woodchester, was delighted to win and brought his dog Lola along to help collect the prize from Nom Nom’s Cupcakery. The Christmas Pudding hunt was organised by the Chamber of Trade and involved finding crocheted and felt puddings placed in shop windows around the town. Entry was free and participants had to find fifteen of the numbered puddings for an entry into the prize draw. If they found all twenty puddings, which five dogged participants did, they got two entries into the draw. The puddings had been made by customers from Mother Goose, and the COT will be keeping them safe to be used again this year! The pudding that proved the hardest to find (below, look carefully) was number 14 in Lloyds Chemist in Old Market. Difficult to spot even with some encouragement! Prizes consisted of hampers filled with goodies donated by shops across the town, and the Chamber is very grateful for their support. Wind and rain can do their bit, but some signs are depressingly durable. Our picture shows a poster promoting an event on December 6th 2014, still struggling to attract attention in mid-January 2015! T he staff from the Coventry Building Society in Nailsworth have had a busy end to their year of fundraising for various charities. The Annual Children in Need ‘Big Breakfast’ held in conjunction with Egypt Mill Hotel was attended by 60 people and raised a fantastic £763. Once again the local businesses in Nailsworth were incredibly generous with donations for the raffle and as usual four pupils from Thomas Keble School joined us to sell the raffle tickets and serve the breakfasts. The book swap is still extremely popular and this year has raised £67.54 for the Gloucestershire Air Ambulance and £145.78 for the Cotswold Care Hospice. In total, the fundraising for the Cotswold Care Hospice during 2014, the Branch charity, has raised an amazing £870.00. Lastly, but by no means least, the generosity of the local community has been overwhelming with donations to the Stroud food bank. The box is crammed full week after week. Owls class (years 5 & 6) hosted a special Christmas lunch for the senior residents in the village. Not only did they write the invitations, plan the menu and cook the food, they also prepared the dining tables, served and chatted to their guests, and afterwards entertained everyone with carol singing and instrument playing. The atmosphere in the classroom was wonderful - there were many happy guests and it was a joy to overhear some of the conversations that were taking place between the generations. Owls were polite, confident and fully engaged with their visitors and we were very proud of them. After the lunch everyone was invited to join the whole school to watch the infant nativity play in the church. The children sang with so much enthusiasm, acted well and spoke their lines clearly, so that everyone enjoyed a fabulous performance. The children’s smiles, laughs and sparkling eyes said it all. Children from Otters class (years 3 and 4) were selected to ‘make’ the Christmas altar cloth for St Martin’s Church. The Reverend Sue Sobczak, Assistant Curate, along with other church members came into school and worked with the children making and decorating angels to adorn the alter cloth which was used in the church throughout the Christmas season. Our final event before the end of term was the Junior Nativity Procession on 18th December, to which the whole village was invited to attend. The procession began at 6pm in the playground where everyone gathered around the stage, which was lit and decorated, to listen to carols played on traditional hand-bells. Following the appearance of The Angel Gabriel everyone followed Mary and Joseph and their ‘donkey’ (aka Dreamy the pony) down to the inn (aka The Hog @ Horsley). After enjoying the choir and musicians, Joseph knocked on the inn Happy New Year to everyone from St Dominic’s Catholic Primary School. We have had a lovely start to the term, when our choir took part in the Young Voices concert in Birmingham. This was a joyous occasion and the children did not stop singing and dancing! I am grateful to Mrs Killey, Mrs Urquhart Dixon and Mrs Brown for accompanying the children. We also attended a massed choir concert in St George’s church where local schools were gathering to sing the songs sang at Young Voices. Our thanks go to Reg Urquhart who organised this event. Our Y5/6 children have been busy fundraising for their trip to Cadbury World, and we have had a wide range of money making ideas, from selling chocolate buttons which had kindly been donated by a local chocolatier, to selling homemade bookmarks, and also a second hand toy stall. We finished with a carol and moved into the church where we were greeted by the three kings. A short service which included readings, poems and a dance entitled ‘The Tailor of Gloucester’ brought proceedings to a close followed by mulled cider, hot chocolate and mince pies for all. A really lovely end to a very busy term. We have now returned to school, with our batteries recharged, looking forward to engaging the children with more inspiring activities during the coming term. These will include taking part in the BBC Music’s ‘Ten Pieces’ event, visits to Redwood Education Centre near Slimbridge and Oxford Science Museum, an animation workshop with GLIC (Global Language Immersion Centre) and a visit from the Parliamentary Education Outreach Workshop, plus sports events and fundraising activities. Between them children from Years 4 – 8 (aged 8 – 13) have submitted over 60 concepts, and the best will be incorporated into the overall design of the library. Involving the school’s pupils in the process was the idea of the school’s Head of Design and Technology, Lee Waters, and the architect firm tasked with designing the space - Millar and Howard, based in Chalford. The new library has been made possible by the brand new performing arts centre being built at Beaudesert. Once the music department moves out of the old and into the new building, the space it leaves will be transformed into the new library area. Work is set to start after Easter. Moving from new publications to very old ones, staff were delighted to recently receive a very special package containing a wonderful collection of Beaudesert school magazines dating back to 1912. They were kindly given to the school by a former Headmaster whose own grandfather founded the school in 1908. The project aims to work with young people to help provide them with useful life skills, encourage socialisation and cohesion and to improve confidence and self esteem. Over the course of the project a number of topics are delivered to achieve this which include: team building, first aid, cooking on a budget, healthy lifestyles, animal welfare, the role of the police and neighbourhood warden and much more. The project is delivered by SDC Community Development Officer, Charlotte Galling and Nailsworth Youth Club’s youth worker and anecdotes from years gone by, and are currently being scanned to be kept safe for posterity. The collected ring pulls are being shipped to the Philippines to be used as ‘raw material’ by the PCF for the creation of beautiful accessories to wear. So we did just that. We don’t talk to everyone and, sometimes, the person we see doesn’t feel able to give a definitive view. Anyway, it’s no names, no pack-drill! Generally the shop keepers were pretty upbeat with several saying it had been the best Christmas for years – and in one case, of a pretty well established shop, ‘for ever’. For some it was a bit of a cliff hanger, redeemed by a rush to shop in the last couple of weeks. Several felt it had been a slow start, wondering if people were going to Bath or Cribbs Causeway and saving Nailsworth for later. There were considerable variations in extended opening times and it was felt that the lack of a consistent pattern meant that those shops which did open late or on Sundays didn’t get all that much benefit from it. Of course the sun doesn’t shine equally on everyone and for some traders it was ho-hum or worse. Did traders miss Nailsworth Noël? None volunteered concern though many, when prompted, regretted its absence. Without it there’s a feeling of uncertainty about when things should start. A number felt that more people were shopping locally rather than on the internet or at the big stores. If true that’s good news because our traders really do need a good Christmas trading period. The King George V field has seen the most changes in the last year with the under 11’s play area transformed, a new boules court and, most recently, some outdoor gym equipment funded by a £20,000 County Council grant to promote a more active lifestyle. William Marling of Stroud and his descendents were prominent clothiers in King’s Stanley and Stonehouse throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. William’s son, Samuel Stephens Marling (1810-83) co-founded Marling Grammar School and was on the committee which lobbied for the railway link between the Stonehouse and Nailsworth mill areas which opened in 1867, nicknamed the Dudbridge Donkey. Nathanial Marling is also mentioned as a cloth mill owner, but no one has ever heard of Miles. Or does the ‘Miles’ in fact refer to a separate person altogether . . . ? One theory is that it might be in honour of Henry Miles (1698-1763) dissenting minister and scientific writer born in Stroud, but what was his relevance to Nailsworth? “Marlings Ground” is shown on an 1839 Avening Parish map, which reinforces the idea that ‘Miles’ was someone else. Does anyone know the origin of the name ‘Miles Marling’? A grant from the Foundation was added to money raised locally to buy a plot of land to be “preserved and safeguarded for public benefit”. When the King George’s Fields Foundation was dissolved in 1965, there were 471 KGV Playing Fields across the country, which were then taken over by the National Playing Fields Association. Nailsworth’s KGV is on the former Enochs field owned by the town and is managed by the Town Council under the aegis of the NPFA. The KGV play area had not been fully revamped for at least 20 years. Thanks to £34,500 of developer’s money made available from the sale of the former Hazelwood Factory site, and additional funds from the town council precept, the shabby looking play area had a complete makeover and re-opened in April 2014. 2 tennis courts outdoor gym boules pitch Faith and Service St. George’s Dear Friends, As I sit to write this letter, the news channels and papers are full of the recent attacks in Paris on the offices of Charlie Hebdo and the Jewish Supermarket by extremist Jihadi fighters linked to ISIS. The death of anybody in such circumstances is a tragedy and we are all losers as members of the human race. As tragic, in the aftermath of these events, has been some of the reaction. Peaceful God-fearing Muslims (as the vast majority are) have been targeted and persecuted as if, somehow, all Muslims are the same. There are stories of French Jews leaving France to return to Israel, abandoning their birthplace, business and the like. The deaths are the result of a warped view of the world and of God’s teaching. Some of the reaction shows a similar misunderstanding of Jesus’ teaching, to love our neighbour as ourselves. Prejudice in any form is a destructive and evil force. But, it is present in all of us to a greater or lesser extent. During February the Christian church enters the season of Lent. It begins on Wednesday 18th – Ash Wednesday – when Christians are urged to take part in an act of penitence for all that mars God’s image in them and to begin a 40 day period out of their lives during which they try to draw closer to God and to know him better. It seems to me that the world would be a safer place and that evil would be diminished if more of us drew closer to the teaching of Jesus and began to live out that teaching more in our lives. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown into jail and sentenced to death. Valentine fell in love with the daughter of the jailer and when he was taken to his death, he sent her a love letter signed, ‘from your Valentine.’ Jesus has done more than write us a love letter. He has given us a wonderful gift, the gift of His unconditional love, freely given. A love not just for one special person, but offered to anyone who will receive it. A striking feature of this episode is the scale of public support for the rejection. There were upwards of 800 letters voicing opposition to the application, letters not only from people who might be represented as ‘not in my back yard’ objectors, but from across the community and beyond. The Council meeting was exceptionally well attended, overflowing the chamber into the canteen and watching the relay on the screen. So, what happens now? Newland Homes have six months to appeal the Council’s decision. “I think this application is bonkers.” (District Cllr. Emma Sims) At its meeting on January 13th, Stroud District Council overwhelmingly endorsed the recommendation of its planning officers to reject the outline planning application made by Newland Homes to build 17 homes on a site in the Newmarket Valley below Pike Lane. The officers’ recommendation was based on the impact the development would have on landscape, thus implicitly endorsing the case for the preservation, in its natural state, championed by the Save Nailsworth Valley group. In the course of a spirited discussion in Council two other substantial objections to the application emerged. The first was that the development failed to meet the claim of sustainability which was made for it. It simply would not do for Nailsworth, in terms of housing needs and amenity that was claimed. Although the site is close to the town centre, people could not easily get there by the infrequent bus service, or by foot or on bike. Save Nailsworth Valley, set up to fight the application, is now setting its sights on achieving more longterm protection for the valley, which would make it far harder for developers to attempt this sort of speculative application. This needs to be a robust and durable defence, something we hoped we had in the Design Statement which now seems to have been something of a nine days’ wonder. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this defence. Truly is it said of these natural features that when they’re gone they’re gone forever. Every development constitutes the thin end of a wedge; a precedent is set and resistance to the next proposed development is the more difficult. We live in a beautiful area and a beautiful area is what we should leave to our successors. The evening was arranged by Stroud High pupils Rosie Duckworth from Nailsworth and Charlotte Humphery from Stroud who are travelling to Malawi in July. When they are there they will be Volunteering at the Ministry of Hope, which is a feeding centre for children affected by HIV/AIDS. The girls have decided to raise money be cycling the distance to Malawi - that’s over 2,500 miles each. Mostly they are cycling to school and at weekends, but on Tuesday they have a bicycle set up in Mark@ Street and cycled for the evening when they weren’t serving food to the guests. The total raised on the night was over £550! Also during the evening there was a sweepstake to guess how far they would cycle, a quiz on facts about Malawi and a raffle. Raffle prizes were donated by Nailsworth businesses, The Yellow Lighted Bookshop, A touch of Peru, Coco, Joya, Gyles Allan hairdressers and Mark@Street itself. Mark Payne, the owner of the restaurant said “It was a great event and we were very pleased to be able to host it to help the girls out. This month we introduce you to two more. Josh Maddison (below) is from the area and is training to be an architect. He’s done a three year degree course at Lincoln University and is now doing a year’s paid apprenticeship with D. Stainer-Hutchins in their offices in Bridge Street. Rachael Stainer-Hutchins explained how it works. The degree course provides a solid basis for the principles of building design, but Rachael tells of people who have reached this stage, but have real and sometimes crippling NMC difficulty in translating concepts into three dimensions, envisioning space ... The practical architect’s work goes well beyond that. There’s the client (who thinks he knows what he wants but whose ideas may be short on economic and practical realism) who must be coaxed towards a viable project. There are the planning authorities to win over. There are the practicalities of the site – which may be far from ideal. These are the things that must be learned in a very practical way during this year’s apprenticeship. Josh relishes both the pace and the challenge. It’s not a long time – and it’s a very different life from going to lectures. The emphasis is on performing at the pace of a full professional but, obviously, on smaller projects. There’s guidance and help available, but there’s nothing that people like Josh can’t attempt. When the year is up Josh will carry a portfolio of his work back to university, ready for another three years study and then another year’s assignment to an architectural practice. At the end of this Josh will be well on Car Servicing Specialists Nailsworth MOT Centre Apprentices the way to being able to put the initials RIBA after his name. Rachael says, “He is cheerful and hardworking. He learns fast. He makes a significant contribution. We have never lost out by having students in our practice. They have all gone on to bigger things.” Eve Squire (below) is an apprentice at Jacaranda Flowers. Eve comes from Dursley and is taking a two year college course in Bridgewater with a view to becoming a florist. She spends four days a week at Jacaranda and goes to college the other days. There’s art, science and practicality involved in the florist trade and Eve is enjoying doing it. A member of staff from Bridgewater College came out to inspect Jacaranda to confirm that it was a good place for Eve to do her apprenticeship. Apart from that, Emily Wand, Jacaranda’s manager, who mentors Eve doesn’t have contact with the College. Her progress is monitored through her days in college. As with any apprenticeship both success and happiness rests very much on the relationship which is built up between apprentice and mentor. The apprentice has to be challenged but feel there’s support available when needed. Most importantly an apprenticeship affords an opportunity to appraise your chosen career path; is this really what you want to do? In Eve’s case the answer is very clearly yes – and Emily tells us that she’d very much like to offer Eve full time employment when she finishes her studies. Unexpected defeats and that hope is gone! Yes, FGR is still just below the play-off line, but with greater consistency the team could be just off the top spot!
