Chaput Saint John Paul II—In 1979, Saint John Paul II was the first pope to visit Philadelphia, where he said Mass on Logan Circle for nearly one million people filling the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In 1994, he celebrated the first World Meeting of Families in Rome, which aimed to strengthen the sacred bonds of family across the globe. Upon his canonization, he was declared “the pope of the family.” Saint Gianna Beretta Molla— A pediatrician and mother of four, Saint Gianna is best known for her selfless love as a mother, giving her life to bear her fourth child in 1962. She was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1994 and canonized in 2004. Saint Gianna is the Patron Saint for mothers, physicians and unborn children. Her life was a testament to “the family fully alive,” the theme for the World Meeting of Families—2015. World Meeting of FamiliesMorning & Evenings Sessions for Preparation The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hosting World Meeting of Families, in September 2015, which will culminate with a visit from our Holy Father, Pope Francis. This event which occurs only once every 3 years, and was initiated by St John Paul II, brings people together from around the world to pray, learn, and embrace the importance of the family, in its many shapes and sizes, and recognize it as a critical foundation to our global society. In preparation of the event ALL are welcomed and encouraged to attend the sessions being offered here at SPX. The morning sessions dates are: Wednesdays, 11:30am-12;45pm on 1/14, 2/11, 3/11, 4/15, 5/13, 6/17, 7/15, 8/12 and 9/2. Call Rita at 610-5435348 if you have questions. The evening sessions will meet once per month, 7:30 - 9:00 pm in the SPX Dowd Center in the church basement. Our first session will be Wednesday, 1/7/15, and will serve as an information night. The universal guide created for this event, "Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive" will be available during the information session. If you do not have a copy of the book, you will receive a free copy at the meeting. Each chapter covers a different subject yet is complementary to the others. Registration is not required and there is no fee for participation. The subsequent sessions will follow on the 1st Wednesday of each month: 2/4; 3/4; 4/1; 5/6; and 6/3. We hope you will join us, and please invite a family member or friend as we prepare for this unique opportunity to share in this very special and important event. If you have any questions, please email either: Chas DeFeo [email protected]; Bernie Long [email protected] ; or Trisha Brown [email protected]. If you have missed any of the meetings, you are welcome to join us anyway! 181—Saint Pius X Page 4 February 1, 2015 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Sisters and Brothers, In our Psalm response today we sing, “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” We encounter the voice of God, if we have the ears to hear it, every day of our lives. He speaks to us in a special and real way in the words of Scripture, the Bible, that we listen to each week as we gather to worship at Mass. Jesus is THE WORD of God. When he speaks to us in the Gospel, we hear God speaking directly to us. Although the words of the Gospels were written down many years ago, they are ever new for us because they are the living, transforming Words of God. As we listen to these stories of our faith over and over again each year, lets pray that we will hear them like new each time, with ears and heart open to listen to what God is saying to each of us. And even more important not just to listen but then respond in love and charity to what God has to say. Saint Blaise Blessing of Throats This Tuesday, February 3 we celebrate the feast of Saint Blaise. Blaise was the bishop of Sebaste, Armenia in the fourth century. Before being martyred, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking on a fish bone. Soon after his death Saint Blaise has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat and people would pray through his intercession to be kept free from all sickness. We will have several opportunities in his feast day for the traditional blessing of throats: Throats will be blessed after the 6:30 and 8:00 morning Masses. The School community will gather in Church at 1:45 for a prayer service with the blessing of throats. The CCD community will gather at 4:30 and 7:00 for a prayer service with the blessing of throats. All are invited to attend any of these services and to have your throat blessed. Married Couples Mass On Friday evening, February 13, at 7:00 PM we will hold our 3rd Annual Married Couples Mass. The love of husband and wife is a reflection of the love God has for His Church, that is, for each one of us! Please join us for this special Mass as we thank God for the gift of marriage. Wedding vows will be renewed at the Mass. Please see and return the form found on page 6 in the bulletin so your names can be placed in the booklet. Your Old Palm Lent is right around the corner. Please bring last year’s palm to church the next few weekends. The palm is needed to make the ash used to mark our foreheads on Ash Wednesday. There will be baskets to place your palm in the vestibule of the Church starting next week. God bless you, Fr. World Meeting of Families: Chapter 3: The Meaning of Human Sexuality “Love is Our Mission” because God created us for a reason: to love us, and for us to love one another (Chapter 1). God’s covenant with Israel and the Church reveals what God’s love is like: tender and passionate, but also steadfast and sacrificial (Chapter 2). In Chapter 3, we learn that the bodily, earthly world has spiritual significance. Tangible things— sacramentals, acts of charity, sacred art and culture, our liturgical feasts and fasts—have the capacity to reveal the glory of God. Marriage, as one of the sacraments, reveals this to us in a special way. The bodies of the spouses, in the complementarity of their masculinity and femininity, have the unique role of revealing God’s nature as a communion of life -giving love. How can a man and a woman imitate God’s love together? How can they live in a way that is intimate and committed, joyful and merciful, forgiving and fertile? Through their participation in the life of the Church, this kind of love becomes possible. God’s love is not an audition, or a temporary experiment, or a self-seeking negotiation. In the same way, marriage is never a private, inward romance, but always discovers its true nature in relation to God and his wider purposes. A sacramental marriage is called to be a little parable of God’s love, always ordered to joy and service. All Catholic sexual ethics flow from these ideas. In our next chapter, we will reflect in depth on marriage, followed by the next chapter about celibacy. - Dr. Christopher C. Roberts and Meghan Cokeley. Did you know? Sing to the Lord, praise his name! Could the psalm be any clearer? There can be no doubt that we are all called to sing the Lord’s praises, whether in our pew singing congregational hymns and psalms, or in the choir loft singing specially prepared music which praises His name in a very intense way. Our choir season has begun for this liturgical year, but it is not at all too late to add your voice to that of the faithful members of our SPX adult choir. We would really love to have you join us! Choir rehearses every Thursday evening from 7:00 until about 8:30 and sings each week at either the Saturday vigil, or the 9:30, or the 11:30 Sunday Masses as well as at special festive liturgies throughout the year. We are in special need of MEN’S voice. You need not be able to read music to join, just to be able to match pitches. You don’t even need to be to be able to be at every rehearsal and every Mass we sing...we practice each piece many times so that all will be comfortably familiar before we perform it. Please give serious thought to adding your voice to ours, especially if you have had some experience singing in school, or church, or even in a well-tuned shower stall. If you would like further information, please call Bob Jones at 610-357-0047, or email [email protected] or just climb the stairs at the rear of the church up to the choir loft any Thursday night. We’ll be looking for you! Divorced & Separated Catholics You are not alone! Starting March 3, 2015, St. Pius X offers the Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide program to men and women suffering from divorce. The 12 week program features DVD presentations covering topics of shock, denial, anger, grief, guilt, forgiveness, money, the courts, the kids, the ex-spouse, annulment, dating, spirituality, remarriage or staying single, and much more. Whether you got divorced ten years ago or ten days ago, the program offers valuable insight. DVD presenters include the brightest teachers, counselors, and authors in Catholic media: Rose Sweet (series producer and author of healing the Divorced Heart), Dr. Ray Guarendi, Catholic Psychologist, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, EWTN host and child of divorce, Christopher West, theologian and teacher of Pope St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, and Fr. Steve Porter, a Catholic priest and spiritual director. This Christian program is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church. It is open to anyone seeking comfort, counsel and clarity after, or during, divorce or separation.
