ebrating the merger of
Greenfield
Community
College to include a campus
at Sunnydale in Shildon.
The installation is on loan
from Kew Gardens
in
Surrey, and a number of
groups from both campuses
were involved in creating
additional work for the
display.
The groups include a men’s
Cree, art clubs for young
people and other after
school clubs.
Staff,
students
and
members of the community gathered first at the
Shildon campus and then at
Newton Aycliffe, where the
mayor of each town had
the honour of turning on
the lights.
In his speech to mark the
switching on of the lights,
Mr Priestley, Executive
Head Teacher at Greenfield
said, “January can be a difficult time of year but not
at Greenfield. We have lots
of exciting things going on
and are looking forward to
a bright future in Newton
Aycliffe and Shildon.”
You can see the installation at the Shildon campus
after school hours from
the neighbouring leisure
centre.

New Year’s Day
crash
At around 4pm on New
Year’s
Day,
Alexandra
Rossal drove her Ford
Fiesta into another vehicle
at Eldon crossroads.
Police
attended
the
accident and after a
positive roadside breath
test, the 20 year-old was
arrested and taken to
Bishop Auckland Police
Station.
Rossal admitted complete
responsibility
for
the
accident, stating that she
had not come to a full
stop at the crossroads and
that she had not seen the
other vehicle. The court
heard that the defendant,
who lives in Church Street,
Howden le Wear and works
as a carer, was en route to
another patient when the
accident occurred.
She had been at work all
day, having had seven
hours sleep and only a
sandwich to eat that day.
Rossall was said not to be
a drinker but had been
drinking up until 1am that
morning. Magistrates at
Newton Aycliffe sentenced
her to 16 months disqualification from driving and
fined her a total of £230
including costs.

A golden couple
Terry and Irene Bell received a lovely bouquet of flowers from the Mayor of Shildon,
Henry Nicholson, to mark their special occasion.
The mayor of Shildon,
councillor
Henry
Nicholson, was proud to
present a lovely bouquet
of flowers on behalf of
the Town Council to Irene
and Terence Bell, who
celebrated their Golden
Wedding Anniversary on
Friday 23rd January, 2015.
Terence, 76, known as
Terry, is a local lad born
in Redworth Road who
attended All Saints School,
whilst his wife Irene was
born in Spennymoor.
Terry left school in 1953
and found employment
at Shildon Works, staying
only for 6 month before
moving on to North Road
Loco Works to start an apprenticeship as a plater.
He was called up into the
Army in 1959 where he
stayed until 1961, when he
went to work at Dermide

Estate. He returned to
Shildon Works in January
1965, just 2 weeks before
he married Irene.

Eden Grange Fish Farm,
supervising 30 labourers.
In 1988 he began at Talents
Engineering in Newton
Aycliffe, retiring in 2003.
Irene, 69, started work in
1960 at Smart & Browns,
Spennymoor, where she
stayed for 5 years, leaving
only to get married.
After raising her family she
worked the twilight shift
at G.E.C. Aycliffe.
In 1970 she found employment at Astraka where
she stayed until its closure
15 years later. She then
moved on to Ramar Dresses
in Crook until that too
closed its doors. Next was
Paiges, which also closed.
Her final job was at B.B.H.
on South Church Industrial
Estate, retiring when Terry
ceased working.
The lovely couple met in
the Masons Arms in Shildon
at a sing-along before
tying the knot at Bishop
Auckland Register Office.
After they married they
lived in Redworth Road
with Terry’s family before
moving into their own
home just next door. In
1975 they moved to their
current address in Dalton
Crescent.
They have two daughters,
Stephanie and Gillian,
who both live in Shildon,
as well as 6 grandchildren
and 3 great grandchildren.
Terry was an avid Newcastle United supporter, attending games both home
and away for 20 – 30 years.
In earlier times he played
darts and dominoes, but
now he enjoys a pint at
the Institute and the Three
Tuns.
Irene was a keen bingo
player at New Shildon
W.M.C. She also played
darts and dominoes for
the Redworth Arms and
then the B.R., where
she
represented
the
North East Staff Association, playing all over the
North of England. Her
main delight in her life is
her family, who she sees
nearly every day.
They celebrated their
very special occasion with
a party for family and
friends at the Institute
on Saturday night, 24th
January, with an Elvis

Surviving Winter
An additional 280 vulnerable people in County Durham and Darlington die in the winter
months as a result of cold and poor living conditions.
As residents in Shildon face
a “heat or eat” dilemma
this winter, County Durham
Community Foundation has
launched this year’s Surviving Winter campaign in a bid
to help those most in need.
Cuts in government funding
and rising fuel bills will leave
many elderly people struggling to keep warm, with
some facing a stark choice
– to heat their home or buy
food.
The Community Foundation
is calling on those who can
afford to forego their Winter
Fuel Payment to donate it
to the campaign, in order to
help those who are at risk of
freezing in the bitter temperatures this season.
During the winter months in
County Durham and Darling-
ton, an additional 280 vulnerable people die as a result
of the cold and poor living
conditions, with over 58,000
households in fuel poverty.
The Appeal aims to help
thousands of people who are
affected by the cold weather,
including the elderly, those
with disabilities, families
with small children living
in fuel poverty and the
homeless. You do not have
to be in receipt of a Winter
Fuel Payment to support
the Appeal, all donations
are welcome and will help
residents of Durham and Darlington through the winter
months. This will be achieved
in the following ways:
1. Groups: Grants will be
awarded
to
community
and voluntary groups that
run winter programmes for
the elderly and vulnerable
including additional food,
equipment and transport.
2. Individuals: Grants will
also be awarded to individuals in fuel poverty to help
them purchase any of the top
ten energy efficient household items.
To donate to the appeal send
cheques, payable to County
Durham Community Foundation, to Victoria House, Whitfield Court, Meadowfield Industrial Estate, Durham DH7
8XL, marked on the reverse
with ‘Surviving Winter’.
To donate online visit
www.justgiving.com/cdf/
Donate/. The money raised
by the appeal will be used to
support older and vulnerable
people across the County.

Guilty of sexual offences
Gregg
Mortimer,
from
Shildon, appeared before
a jury at Teesside Crown
Court on Tuesday 20th
January, where he was
found guilty of Sexual
Offences.
The 25 year-old was
handed a 12 month prison
sentence, suspended for 18
months, and was given an 8
week curfew between the
hours of 8pm and 6am.
He was also prohibited
from contacting the victim,
either directly or indirect-
ly, for a period of five years
and was ordered to pay
£2,000 towards the cost of
the prosecution.
Mortimer will also be
placed on the Sex Offender
Registry for a period of 10
years.
Jailed for unprovoked stabbing
A 23 year-old man has
been jailed for ten and a
half years after he stabbed
another man in a seemingly
unprovoked attack.
Dean Williams, formerly of
Eldon, was staying at the
Changing Lives hostel near
Chester-le-Street when he
called another resident
into his room shortly after
midnight on 12th May.
Williams asked the man to
help fix his mobile phone
but then turned hostile
before stabbing his victim
in the neck and wrist with
a fish-filleting knife.
The victim then fled from
the room and sought help.
The court heard how after
being arrested it was dis-
covered that Williams had
been drinking and had
taken 11 Valium pills.
He admitted wounding with
intent, criminal damage
and possessing a knife in
public.
Williams was told he must
serve at least 7 years
before he can be considered for parole.

Dodds has a previous
conviction for possession

The major issue in the

whether or not the possession was in dangerous

Solid win for Shildon AFC
Shildon AFC kept their
league title challenge on
track with a good solid 1
– 0 away win against topof-the-league side North
Shields on Saturday 24th
January.
In front of a large crowd
of 513, which included
supermac Malcolm Macdonald, the Railwaymen
started the stronger with
both Ben Wood and Billy
Greulich-Smith just missing
the target.
On 23 minutes Paul Connor
was through but was pulled
back by the last man John
Parker, who was yellow
carded.
Minutes later Connor’s shot
was cleared off the line by
Parker.
At the other end, Darren
Craddock was lucky not to
receive a yellow card for
blocking off Gareth Bainbridge.
Half Time: North Shields 0
Shildon AFC 0.
After Shildon’s Kyle Hayes
made a great stop on 56
minutes with his feet,
Shildon scored the only goal
of the game on the hour
when a left wing corner
from Mark Hudson was
headed in by Billy GreulichSmith.
Shields pressed for the
equaliser with both Dean
Holmes and John Parker
firing wide, before Gareth
Bainbridge’s
shot
was
punched away by keeper
Kyle Hayes.
In a game of few real
scoring chances, there was
little to choose between
the two sides.
Final Score: North Shields
0 Shildon AFC 1.
Goalscorer: Greulich-Smith
60.
Subs:
Scroggins
for
Doninger 73, Chapman for
Connor 84.
Bookings: (Y) Wood 45.
Man-of-the-Match:
Sam
Hodgson.
After the match manager
Gary Forrest said, “I thought
we put in a hard working
team performance. We kept
our shape, worked hard and
were solid throughout.
“Coming here and winning
is a good result for us,
as Shields had only been
beaten once at home in
the league before today’s
game”.
Busy month for Shildon RAC
At the beginning of the
month, Shildon Running
Club’s AGM took place.
Diane Wood has stood
down as Chairwoman after
four years to enable her to
spend more time coaching,
and long-serving under
11’s coach Jean Best announced her retirement
from coaching.
Vivienne
Rudge
was
welcomed as the new
chairwoman, while Sarah
Tilley and Emma Flynn
joined the committee as
Fundraising Coordinators.
Chris Griffiths is now the
Coaching Coordinator, and
Annie Pluse is Welfare
Officer.
A freezing sunny winters
day on Saturday 24th in
Pontefract saw the annual
Northern XC Championship,
and four Shildon athletes
braved the cold to tackle
the
extremely
muddy
course.
First up was Chloe Fairclough in the 3.1km Under
13 Race. She finished in
95th position out of 196 in
a time of 13:30. Next up
was Cameron Stainsby and
Harrison Daglish, in a 4km
Under 15s. Cameron was
the first Shildon athlete
home in a position of 104th
in a time of 15:53, and
Page 8
Harrison finished in 163rd
position with a time of
18:39. Last up competing
in the Senior Women was
Lizzie Wood in an 8km two
lap course, finishing in a
time of 37:13 in a position
of 123rd out of a field of
342.
The Sprint Group have been
busy over the past couple
of months both competitively and in training as
the indoor season builds
to both the Northern and
North Eastern Championships in February.
On 3rd January Rachel
Bennett
attended
the
Commsport Open at Sheffield where she competed
in both the 60m and 200m
at under 15 level. At 60m
Rachel ran well to finish 4th
overall recording a time of
8.27 seconds whilst in her
first 200m outing at this
level, she put in another
good performance finishing
3rd in 27.23 seconds.
On 17th January Georgia
Hirst ran in the Northern
Indoor
Championships
at Sheffield in the under
20 Women’s 400m event
where she put in a spirited
performance to finish 3rd in
her heat in 61.55 seconds.
On 22nd January coach
Darren Hirst took a number
of athletes from the Sprint
Group to the Gateshead
Indoor Open Meeting where
a number of excellent
performances
enhanced
Shildon’s growing reputation for producing good
sprint athletes.
Both 12 year-olds, Rachel
Bennett and Maddie Wells,
stepped up an age group
to run in the Under 17 60m
races to gain valuable experience, and neither were
phased by their senior
opposition as Rachel won
overall in 8.16 seconds with
Maddie finishing 3rd in 8.34
seconds.
In the second round of
races Rachel again finished
1st overall in 8.2 seconds
whilst Maddie sprinted to
3rd place in 8.32 seconds.
Kyle Walton also stepped
up to under 17 level on the
night and showed he wasn’t
afraid of his senior opposition, recording a time of
7.84 seconds in his first
race. Despite this being
only the second time he has
represented the club and
with the hard work he has
displayed in training paying
off, he ran brilliantly in his
second race to produce a
PB and a new club record
at 60m (under 15 men) in
7.80 seconds.
Shildon Juniors Under 14s
hosted Newton Aycliffe on
Sunday 25th January and a
hard fought contest ended
in a 1-1 draw.
The game was even as
a
contest
throughout.
Shildon took the lead when
Steven Dawson finished
superbly with a right foot
shot high into the corner of
the net in the 17th minute.
Niall Higham in the Shildon
goal pulled off a couple of
superb saves to maintain
Shildon’s advantage.
In the 56th minute an attacking move from Shildon
broke down and Aycliffe
broke at speed. Aycliffe’s
Centre forward smacked
a speculative effort which
gave Higham on this
occasion no chance for the
leveller.
Shildon welcomed Centre
Forward and top scorer
Noah McCourt back onto
the pitch for the last 10
minutes after a two month
lay off.
A cross from the left hand
side was put in towards
McCourt in the 65th
minute. He took a fantastic 1st touch and then
smacked a shot towards
the left hand of the goal,
which the Aycliffe keeper
superbly pushed round the
post to deny the returning
Striker.
Shildon pressed for a
winner in the last 10
minutes with Aycliffe still
posing a threat on the
counter, however no more
goals arrived and the game
ended in a well-deserved
draw.
Man-of-the-match:
Niall
Higham.
5-0 win for Under 8s
Shildon Under 8s took on
Stockton Town Royals at
the weekend, in their first
game since before Christmas.
The game got off to a good
start with Sam Hopper and
Noah Fawcett scoring early
goals.
In the second half John
Taylor hit the back of
the net, while Noah and
Sam also bagged another
apiece.
Final score was 5 - 0 to
Shildon.
Man-of-the-match:
Sam
Hopper.
Supporters meeting
The next meeting of
Shildon Supporters’ Club
will be taking place on
Sunday 1st February, at
11.30am, in the clubhouse
on Dean Street.
Everyone is welcome to

the meeting printed in last
week’s Crier was incorrect.
