D Governor Training and Development D This report includes details of training currently available to governors. Additional training opportunities are likely to be added during the course of the year and governors will be notified accordingly. The contact officer for this report is: Colin Byers (Governance Support Officer) - Tel: 561 2781 e-mail [email protected] Access to the Training Programme Many Governing Bodies in Sunderland continue to subscribe to the Authority’s Governor Support and Training service level agreement. This gives unlimited access to the sessions organised by the service. In addition the governing body has access to online training, details of which are given below. Please note those Governing Bodies which do not subscribe may still attend any session but the school will be charged £80 per place. The cost of subscription to the Governor Training and Development Service is based on the current size of the Governing Body (as set out in the Instrument of Government). Charges are £42.50 per Governor for the contract period (September 2014 – August 2015) Individual Governing Body Training Governor Support will try to accommodate requests from individual Governing Bodies for specific training, subject to available resources. Online Training Modern Governor (http://www.moderngovernor.com/) is free to all governing bodies who have subscribed to the governor support and development service level agreement. It offers elearning for School Governors in the UK and has been developed by Learning Pool in partnership with a range of school governance experts, experienced School Governors and the National Governors' Association. Governors who have not done so already, can self-register: Go to http://www.moderngovernor.com/ From the home page select the Login/Register button and then Register Now and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be required to add your name and then select your region (Sunderland). You will then be asked to select your school from a list. Finally enter your e-mail address and your own choice of user name and password. You will then receive an automated e-mail from Modern Governor. For those governing bodies interested in signing up to the online training, but have not signed up to the governance and support package please contact Agnes Rowntree or Colin Byers directly to discuss this further. On request, the Governance Support Team can provide schools with a list of their governors who have started or completed any Modern Governor training modules. Sunderland Safeguarding Children Board also provides a number of online courses. RAISEonline (Reporting and Analysis for Improvement through school Self-Evaluation) provides interactive analysis of school and pupil performance data. Wednesday 4th March 2015 or Wednesday 11th March 2015 at Sandhill Centre Both sessions to be held at Sandhill Centre (Montgomery Room), Grindon Lane, Sunderland SR3 4EN 1.00 p.m. – 3.30 p.m. Induction for Newly Appointed Governors Those governing bodies that buy into the Council’s Governor Training Support package have access to Modern Governor online training. Details of how to access this are included in this report. Modules in the package include “The new governor (induction)”, “My role as a governor” and “some governors questions answered” which you can work through in your own time. School Funding Briefing Session This briefing has been organised by the Schools Forum and is open for all school governors. It will provide details around financial issues arising from the Local Government Settlement 2015/16. Thursday 22nd January 2015 6.00 – 7.30 p.m. Washington Arts Centre, Fatfield, Biddick Lane, Washington NE38 8AB in the Theatre. E-Safety Presented by Mark Lloyd The session will raise awareness of issues surrounding young peoples’ access to technology, discuss the role of the school and consider policy and good practice. This will be a repeat of sessions held last term. Thursday 29th January 2015 6.00 – 7.00 p.m. at Monkwearmouth Academy, Torver Crescent, Sunderland SR6 8LG Pupils Missing Out On Education Presented by Caroline Comer (Parent Partnership Officer), Elaine Matterson (Attendance Manager) and Michelle Burlinson (Inclusion and Access Officer). A report was published in last term’s agenda booklet which drew governors’ attention to this issue. It referenced a report from Ofsted which highlighted the effects of pupils missing out on education and gave recommendations for schools, governors and local authorities. This briefing will include case studies and provide a general legal outline to highlight governing body responsibilities. It will include information on managed moves, exclusions and attendance. Thursday 15th January 2015 6.00 – 7.30 p.m. Tuesday 3rd March 2015 2.00 – 3.30 p.m. Both sessions will be held at Sandhill Centre, Grindon Lane, Sunderland SR3 4EN in the Montgomery room. Educational Visits Presented by Steve Lenartowicz – Derwent Hill Centre Director & Outdoor Education Adviser. The briefing will be on Governors’ responsibilities for the health and safety of pupils on educational visits. This will be a repeat of the session held last term Wednesday 18th March 2015 5.30 – 7.00 p.m. at Sandhill Centre (Clough room) GL Governors North East Training As licence holder for governor training workshops in the North East, GL Performance offer school and academy governors three free training workshops from the National College for Teaching & Leadership. Local authority maintained schools, academies and free schools can attend these workshops and may nominate up to three governors (which can include the headteacher) for a free place at all three workshops.
