CITY OF SHAVANO PARK
FEBRUARY 2015
ROADRUNNER
THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE CITIZENS OF SHAVANO PARK
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER:
Oak Wilt
As I informed you last month, Oak Wilt
has infected a property on Bobcat Bend,
located in Shavano Estates. As citizens of
our beautiful community, we should not
underestimate the amount of damage this
disease can cause. Should the Oak Wilt not
be contained, over time it could kill most
of the oak tress across a significant area of
Shavano Park.
The City is moving as fast as possible to
mitigate the disease.
A plan has been
developed and we have contracted a firm to
trench around the diseased area in effort to
stop the spread by containing it inside the
trenched area. Mr. Mark Duff, Texas A&M
Forest Service, is advising staff on how to
proceed, but he cautions that containment
has approximately a 50% success rate in
urban areas like ours.
Nevertheless, the City and its citizens will
need to think about what’s next and the long
term. Having spent most of the tree trimming
money saved up in the Oak Wilt fund, will
we need to increase the fee? Should we
form a Tree Committee? Will the residents
in Shavano Estates organize and prepare for
the future should the trench not work?
For more information on oak wilt see website
at: www.texasoakwilt.org. If you have any
questions or concerns, please call me at 4933478.
Municipal Tract –
Public Input
and Survey
The City has hired Core Research to
survey each City of Shavano Park
residence in regard whether the
remaining 16 acres of the municipal
tract (near City Hall) should be
developed and if so, what kinds of
activities the residents will likely
use.
Core Research recently mailed
each residence a survey in a
blue envelope, which included
instructions and a prepaid envelope
to return the survey before
February 12th to be sure your
opinions are included in the report.
I urge you to complete this survey
and return it ASAP. You input is
very important in determining the
way ahead.
The survey results will be an
assessment of citizen input to this
property. The survey results will
not be an approval to take action.
Any future action will be a result of
deliberate planning and decision
making.
"Here to serve!"

Emergency over the Holiday
Scope: Replacement of the drive motor for Well #8
Cost: $4,500
During the holidays, Well #8 had a drive motor short out and was
not operational from Friday until Monday. The supervisory control,
data acquisitions and SCADA system was not allowing Well #7 to
operate in “auto” and would have to been operated manually “worse
case scenario”. The situation with Well #7 was quickly remedied and
operational by Saturday morning. We have been using Well #5 and
the Trinity Well for the past two months as lead and they have been
providing 80% of the water for Shavano Park.
The team work and dedication of the Public Works / Water department
is outstanding. We are always on call and ready to serve.

POLICE DEPARTMENT URGES CITIZENS TO
REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
SHAVANO PARK POLICE
OFFER SECURITY
CHECKS
Shavano Park Police has received several reports of possible mail theft.
In one instance, the resident did not realize the theft until he received a phone
call from a friend saying they had not received an expected letter. In another,
the resident believed a theft had occurred after they placed outgoing mail
in their curbside box only to notice shortly thereafter that the box door was
open, well before the postal carrier was due to arrive.
Shavano Park Police offers several suggestions to lessen the possibility of this
type of crime.
•
•
•
•
•
Do not place outgoing mail into your mailbox until just before your carrier’s
normal arrival time.
Use postal mail drop boxes at public locations such as the drive-up location
in front of City Hall.
Arrange for trusted friends or neighbors to take delivery of any expected
deliveries too large to fit in your mail box (Boxes or packages delivered
and left on your porch are a popular target of many thieves).
Share information with your neighbors regarding any suspicious
activities.
Report any suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighborhood by calling
9-1-1 immediately.
Shavano Park Police encourages you to report any suspicious activity. Your
safety and security is our primary concern. If you believe you may have been
a victim of mail theft, or if you have any information, please contact Shavano
Park Police at 804-0110 or 492-9248 ext. 209.
Shavano Park Police offers the option of
having police provide security checks of
your home while you are on vacation or
extended time away from your home.
If you have a vacation or any other trip
coming up Shavano Park Police will check
your home while you are away. Call 4929248 to request a Vacation Check Patrol
By or download a copy of the request
form on the Shavano Park city or police
websites.
Complete the form with the information
and then simply mail, fax, email or dropoff the form at City Hall or the Police
Department. Shavano Park Police officers
will then check on your home during your
absence. If the officer notes a problem,
then the officer will either contact you
or a designated person for further
instructions.
Call Karen Garcia or Lt. Mario Nakazono
at 492-9248 for further information.

Shavano Park Firefighters/ EMS take
Santa to Brookdale, Shavano Park
On December 13, Brookdale Shavano
Park, formerly The Homewood Residence
at Shavano Park, hosted their annual
Holiday Festivities for residents and their
families. There was joy with anticipation
in the air, and then Santa (a Firefighter)
arrived, accompanied by other Shavano
Park Firefighters. It was Santa’s traditional
visit to the Assisted Living and Memory
Care community, and every resident had
a chance to talk to Santa. Neighborhood
WATCH volunteers were ELVES, and they
visited with the families and residents
and assisted with refreshments. There
were photos with Santa and the families,
and wishes of good cheer. Santa and the
Elves then walked over to the Memory
Care building and brought smiles to those
seniors needing specialized care.
Thanks to Fire Chief, Mike Naughton, and
the Shavano Park Fire Department for
supporting this annual tradition, and to
Neighborhood WATCH volunteers who
shared their time this holiday season at
Brookdale.

Valentine’s Day Surf and Turf Recipe
Romantic dinner for two!
Ingredients
2 (8 ounce) beef tenderloin filets
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 slices bacon
1/2 cup butter, divided
1 teaspoon OLD BAY® Seasoning
4 ounces lobster tail, cleaned and chopped
or you can substitue crab meat for lobster
PREP - 10 mins
COOK - 30 mins
READY IN - 40 mins
Directions
Set oven to Broil at 500 degrees F (260 degrees C).
Sprinkle tenderloins all over with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Wrap
each filet with bacon, and secure with a toothpick. Place on a broiling
pan, and broil to desired doneness, about 8 to 10 minutes per side for
medium rare.
While tenderloins are cooking, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat
with 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay® seasoning. Stir in chopped lobster meat,
and cook until done. Spoon lobster meat over cooked tenderloins, and
return them to the broiler until the lobster meat begins to brown.
While the lobster is in the oven, heat the remaining 1/4 cup of butter
in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, cook until it browns, turning the color of a hazelnut. To serve, spoon the browned butter over the
steaks, and sprinkle with the remaining Old Bay® seasoning.

FEBRUARY 2015
Spring is a very active time for a gardener and
there are many different things you need do
to prep your yard and flowerbeds. It’s best to
get a lot of the gardening tasks done this time
of year before the blistering heat of summer
sets in. Here is a handy list of tasks that will
help you grow a lush lawn and beautiful flowers this time of year:
1. Fertilize the lawn. Fertilizer bags will
have three numbers on them. The three
numbers represent the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in
the bag. Get a fertilizer that has mostly
or nothing but nitrogen (the first of the
three numbers), as it is what our lawns
need most here in Texas. 20-5-10 or 246-12 or 15-0-0 are all good formulations
to look for, but there are a lot of good options on the market these days.
2. Fertilize trees and shrubs. Don’t forget to fertilize existing trees and shrubs.
These plants need a spring snack too!
Don’t use weed and feed around them
as the weed component can damage your plants.
3. Perfect time to plant. Spring is for planting! It’s time to plant
annuals like zinnias, petunias and begonias. Perennials like Daylilies, Salvia and Coneflower should be planted now. Any trees
and shrubs that you didn’t get planted this fall and winter can still
be planted now, as well. Last but not least, it’s time
to start warm season veggies like tomatoes and peppers.
4.
Mulch, mulch, mulch. After you get all
your planting done, put down a one-to-two inch layer
of mulch over your flower beds and veggie gardens.
This will help keep weeds out and conserve water by
keeping your soil moist.
5.
Water smart. Put your plants and lawn on
a regular watering schedule this month. Remember,
our lawns need about an inch of water a week, either
from us watering or from rain, to perform their best.
An easy trick to make sure you’re watering enough is
to make a mark one inch from the bottom of the inside of an empty tin can. Bury the tin can in the yard
and water as you usually do. At the end of the week,
check the can. If the water is at the one inch mark,
you know you are watering the right amount. Many
people think they must water every day or every other
day to have green and healthy turf. This is a common
misconception that wastes water and actually weakens your lawn. Horticulturalists recommend watering your lawn deeply and infrequently to promote a
strong root system.
6. Prune flowering shrubs. Begin to prune any spring flowering
shrubs like Spirea, Azalea or Chinese Fringe Flower after they finish blooming. Shaping them shortly after they finish blooming
will ensure they set lots of blooms for next year, as well.
