OLD BARNEY Amateur Radio Club http:www.obarc.org e-mail: [email protected] ARRL AFFILIATED February 2015 NEXT MEETING Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 7:30 PM At The Ocean Acres Community Center 489 Nautilus Dr. Manahawkin, NJ Old Barney Amateur Radio Club is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year Upcoming 2 Meter Beam Project We have reserved the Ocean Acres Community Center the 2 meter project is to be held on February 21st at 10:00 AM. For the sake of new members, from time to time OBARC sponsors a building project. Our most recent project was building a 2 meter J-Pole antenna. We had 10 builders and 10 mentors taking part in that project. The 2 meter beam project starts at 8 am with an introduction to antenna modeling software. We will than build a simple multielement 2 meter beam on a wooden boom. The antenna will be optimized using an antenna analyzer and the elements length will be tweaked. Keep in mind, parasitic beam (only one drive element) theory is the same regardless of the frequency. A 20 Meter bean is approximately 10 times the size of a 2 Meter Bean. EDITOR W2KJS KEN SIMONSEN Members are encouraged to contribute to the newsletter ideas, comments and concerns are welcome. Please send to my email address. [email protected] Normal membership meeting is held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the Ocean Acres Community Center on Nautilus Drive in Manahawkin. Refreshments served. If there is sufficient interest we will have a more advance exposure of the antenna modeling software after the construction phase. Handicap accessible. The only cost is for materials and that should only be a couple of bucks. Old Barney Amateur Radio Club Anyone, not only OBARC members are welcome to attend. P.O. Box 117 Jim, K2SZ, is in charge of the project and I would like to thank Jim for his time and effort. Manahawkin, NJ 08050 Visitors Welcome! President’s Page Radio Matters By: Urb W1UL January was an interesting month. It started with George Smith agreeing to present the program for February but toward the end of the month he was involved in a car accident and was pretty banged up and unfortunately had to cancel his appearance. Get well soon George. The month ended with the blizzard that wasn't. As Shakespeare once said, “Much to do about nothing.” On a more positive note, the plans for the 2 meter beam workshop was set for Saturday February 21st at 10:00 AM at the Ocean Acres Community Center. Thanks to Jim K2SZ for his efforts on this project. Everyone is invited to either build of be a mentor, you don't have to be a member. The OBARC Free Members Lending Library is almost ready to go. Essentially, members may borrow item is 5 different categories: Books, Magazines, CDs, Equipment and Tools. We now have well over 100 item in the library, check it out: http://obarc.org/member-lounge/library.php We are planning a one day Technician's Ham Cram. Show up in the morning with a desire to get a ham license and leave in the afternoon with a license. Planning on late March. If you know anyone who might like to attend have them contact me: [email protected] or 609-937-5487. We're not looking for a commitment, only an indication of interest. Think About It By Urb W1UL Is ham radio a microcosm of the general population? There was a recent DXpedition to Iran and it was a mess. Any DXpedition has its share of “cops” who try to stop stupid people doing what stupid people do such as calling on the DX station's frequency. In essence the cops cause more QRM than they deflect. In many cases the offending operators are simply inexperienced. The EP6T DXpedition was plagued by some of the most inconsiderate people I've ever experienced. Deliberately causing QRM was a relatively small part of the lid's operating scheme. Has ham radio just become a reflection of the inconsiderate society in which we live? I sure hope not. If you're relatively new to ham radio be guided by a large amount of time listening and less time transmitting. You'll recognize good operating when you hear it. Emulate the cream of the hobby and ignore the examples of those who lack common curiosity. ON THE AIR FOR FEBRUARY By Skip N1IBM Hello you may have missed in the November On the air column that I ask for your input about the DX info. Well I had no response so that tells me we needed a change and going along with this Month's program. At the program we hope to answer as many of your questions as we can. That being said The News Letter Column will now be called DX and You. Know I am not a writer and not an expert by any means. However I am open to suggestions from anyone on any topic related to DX, antennas, Logging, Software, Contesting, DXCC, making submissions, or just anything you like as this is about what you want to know about. If you need to know then for sure someone else does too. I will do my best to research and write about your topic and hope to answer your questions. Just remember I need to know what you want to know about? So send me your input and I hope we get some interesting topics. I can pick but then I am not really helping you. Send your topics to [email protected] put in the subject newsletter just so I do not miss any. So for this month since I am not telling you what is on the air I will tell you a few places where you can find that information. Good luck all hope to see you at the meeting and work a lot of DX. DX and YOU By Skip N1IBM For this month we will talk about were and how to find out what is on the air now and what is expected to be coming on this month and months to follow. First to see what is on the air right now of course it will require the internet. I have found the best to be http://www.dxscape.com/ The reason I like it is the options allow you to see spots sent from say just the US or just Europe or from all. You can choose to see spots on just one band or one mode or all it's up to your choosing. Also there is a data base to search old spots to check a busted call or any other reason. I will leave it at that for the live spots for now. Now for checking on what is coming up in the next week and months. There are so many sources and they are all different. It is important to check more than one. I will just put a list here as they are all good in there on way. Some you can check live on the internet and some you can sign up for a weekly newsletter. Some are free and some are not. I would start with the free ones unless you have money to spend. http://www.ng3k.com/misc/adxo.html http://www.dxcoffee.com/eng/ daily email http://www.njdxa.org/index.php weekly email http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/weeklycont.php Contest information http://www.dailydx.com/trial.html This is not free but you can get a free two trial ARRL Web site [[email protected]] weekly email The above sites should get you enough information that you will not miss the rare one you need. I hope you found this of some use and do not forget to send me your ideas to [email protected] for the months to follow. 73's Skip/N1IBM VE TEST SESSIONS Lending Library OBARC: VE sessions will take place before the regular meeting at 6:30pm. By Urb W1UL I have set up a beta version of the online library. Go to obarc.org and on the left side navigation click on the "Free Lending Library" link. This will be the public version of the library for nonmembers but they will not be able to reserve an item. Member will login at the Member Lounge with their call and password and one of the items will be the Member versions of the lending library. We currently have 109 items loaded into the searchable database. K2SZ has donated many things but they are yet to be loaded into the database. Please let me know what items you would like to see added to the library especially in the equipment category. Special thanks to my friend Greg, W2MYS from NJDXA. He has donated 29 magazines to the library, mostly CQ Magazines. CQ has a monthly column on Kit Building you may find interesting. Again, this is a beta version, any ideas, suggestions or criticisms would be greatly appreciated. OLD BARNEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB February 2015 OBARC EMAIL ALIASES and REFLECTOR OBARC is in the process of giving every member an OBARC.ORG alias. Essentially an alias address, such as [email protected], automatically forwards mail sent to your alias address to a user specified address. Any mail sent to [email protected] is automatically forwarded to [email protected]. There are several advantages for OBARC members having an email alias in the form of [email protected]. 1. If you know a member’s call you also know how to get email to that member. 2. If you have ever gone through the process of having to change you email address you know what a chore it can be. You have to let everyone who might send you email at your new address that your address has changed from you previous address. If you have and use an OBARC alias you only have the change you old address to your new address in one place and bingo you’re done. To check to see if you have an alias in place, send a message to [email protected]. If the message does not arrive in your In Box, let me know and I’ll get you set up. Send me your current call and your preferred email address. [email protected] or call me at 609-937-5487. OBARC-L Reflector. What is a reflector? Most people on the Internet call them discussion lists but ham radio enthusiasts tend to call them reflectors. No matter what you call them they are all software programs that store a list of subscribers and send any posted emails to all subscribers automatically. Virtually all OBARC members are also subscribed to the OBARC-L reflector. To post a message to the reflector simply send an email to: [email protected]. The name of the list need not be capitalized; it’s only capitalized here to avoid confusing an “L” with a “1”. Add a subject and the body to the message as you would with any email message. Click on your “send” icon and presto, you’ve sent a message to all OBARC-L subscribers. You can only post to the reflector using your subscribed address or an address on a “white list.” Please note that if you are using an alias such as [email protected] you most likely cannot post from that address. Send me an email using the email address you normally use to send messages. [email protected] or call me at 609-937-5487. I will add you to our “white list.” You can be white listed for more than one email address. People who are "white listed” can send email to the reflectors from an address other than their subscribed address. You can add or remove yourself from the list. Send a message to: [email protected] In the body put Subscribe obarc-l Or unsubscribe obarc-l That's an “L” above, not a one. You can also get a list of all OBARC-L subscribers: Send a message to [email protected] and in the body put: List OBARC-L If you have any question of problems please contact me directly. 73 Urb W1UL [email protected] 609-937-5487 OLD BARNEY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB February 2015 Ocean County ARES® News – February, 2015 The next meeting of Ocean County ARES will be on February 18th, 2015 at the Ocean County EOC, Robert J. Miller Airpark, Berkeley Township. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM. There will be no training net held that evening due to the meeting. As I sat here putting this document together, the mail was delivered and the ARCC finally sent the final Certificate of Coordination for the 145.170 MHz, WA2RES repeater in Manchester. It only took 3 years to get it. There is still no word on the 70 cm frequency pair for the Harvey Cedars D-Star repeater from the ARCC. It’s interesting how ARCC processes dozens of requests for the W3BXW system every year, but we can’t get a single request processed. While on the subject of D-Star, I encourage everyone to try out the “Ratflector” put together by Keith – KC2OON. It is linked to the temporary Ocean County ARES D-Star repeater at the Ocean County EOC on 444.500 MHz, +5 MHz (WA2RES/R). All it takes to get started is download the D-Rats program from the Internet and plug in a few parameters in the setup and you then have the capability to chat or send messages with other Ocean County ARES operators. We are also going to monitor the Ratflector during ARES training nets and pass on any comments from the chat section to the voice net. If you can’t make it into the repeater, but can monitor the output, this is a good way to check into the net and be heard. Keith has spent a lot of time putting this all together and it runs on a simple Raspberry Pi computer drawing very little current from a 5 VDC source. D-Rats can be configured to be linked to the Internet via a unique IP or you can gain access via RF if you have a D-Star radio inrange of the EOC repeater. Once the repeater is installed at Harvey Cedars with a decent antenna, the system will become even more functional. The D-Rats program will be covered in detail at the February 18th ARES meeting, so if you have questions, bring them to the meeting! The US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 16-01 and OMARC will be hosting a “Hamcram” session at the Bayville First Aid Squad on Saturday, February 28th form 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. There will be a VE session at 1:00 PM to test anyone wanting to try for their license.
