Janet, as many of you will know, was a wonderful and vibrant member of our Church Community, a long-standing member of our PCC at Syresham and a school governor among many other things. Janet gave so much of her time to God’s work in the community and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. I do not know why some of us leave this earth before others, but I do know that they return to God, to a place where we are told there are many rooms, where we will all one day rest on eternal shores, and where human eyes can finally be opened to all God wants us to see. Throughout Christ’s life, a few were given glimpses of this. And today, at Candlemas, we hear of two: Simeon and Anna. And we know from Simeon’s reaction to what had been revealed that it must be wonderful. After all, he asks God: “Now let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation!” Simeon referred to Jesus as a “light to the nations”. And it is this light that as Christians we are all called to reflect out into the world. It is why at Freddie’s baptism today (Welcome Freddie!) he will receive a lighted candle to remind not only him, but all of us, of this call. We are called to be Jesus’ lights in this world. Janet clearly fulfilled this and we pray Fredddie may do the same as he grows up in the love of Christ. As the prayer goes: Living God, Lighten our hearts with the bright beams of the Son of Righteousness – Jesus Christ our Lord. And preserve us in the doing of your will on this earth, safe in the knowledge that at the last we may shine as stars forever, made whole again, just as those who have loved and served you here and are now at rest, shine on in our hearts and in your eternal joy.
