HOLY ROSARY CHURCH CHICAGO October 12—28th Sunday in Ordinary Time 12 de octubre—28º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario You’re invited to a banquet Ten invito a un banquete La fiesta es imprescindible para los Celebrations are indispensable for everyone and no one considers rejecting an invitation. We celebrate in the middle of the biggest problems and anxieties; such manifestations of joy are signs of hope and a vision for the future, despite all the difficulties we face. Yet if perhaps out of shyness, being unfamiliar with how to dress or behave outside our usual environment, and not knowing how to correspond. Attending the wedding of a prince can be a heavy burden for our pockets and possibilities. You have to wear nice clothes and give them an expensive gift. Furthermore, you would have to correspond in the same manner and there is no way you could host a party of such magnitude in your own home; so you would have to rent a hall, cater, and purchase invitations… It is possible! The funny thing is that we are always invited to a feast with the king. It is God himself who invites us and promises this feast will wipe away every tear. To accept such an invitation, which is an honor and in a way a right, since we are children of God and heirs of the Kingdom, does not represent a waste of money but has its demands. When it comes to responding to such a invitation, it requires a reciprocal invitation, in other words, to invite someone who previously invited us, into our homes, to be part of our lives, to be present in our struggles and joys. We all know that we behave when there are guests; we don’t mistreat other family members; we keep things orderly and clean; we prepare the best meal, and have the biggest smile to welcome visitors. The same thing happens with the invitation to God: we are on our best behavior; prepared and willing, and bring out the best in us. Can you imagine how our daily life would be if we could do this? Relationships would improve, the home environment would be better; there would be greater peace and, certainly, more joy and happiness. The thing is, that often refusing an invitation leaves us wearing our own clothing (even if it is rags) and in our own comfort. We prefer not to leave where we are, because it would entail a great deal of effort… But God continues to invite… and if we don’t come, he goes out to find us along the way. Just as we are, because to enter a celebration with a heart open to change will give us new clothing, a new attitude, and the desire to walk in another path; and our home will open up to the presence of God who wishes to dine with us.
