J OIN US FOR A Taste of Vegas CASINO NIGHT SAVE THE DATE: SATURDAY, MARCH 14 Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Details to follow. 2 NEW YEAR, NEW Y A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DANIELLE ELLMAN Dear CQY Members, It is with great excitement that I announce the next phase of the Central Queens Y multi-phase renovation project, beginning December 22, 2014. SJS Construction has been hired as general contractor to execute plans for the following: • A complete renovation of our pool area, including retiling of the entire deck, enhanced lighting, marble dusting, and necessary pool maintenance. • Complete remodeling of four (4) bathrooms to increase accessibility on both our first level and basement level to all members of our community. • A complete renovation to our Multi-Purpose Room (MPR), including new flooring, ceiling, and lighting, as well as increased storage and new partition. • New flooring and ceiling for entry way and first floor hallways. This construction is expected to run through February. Our thirty-year old facility has seen enormous growth over the last few years and with the increased number of people and programming in the facility every day, our building is in great need of both structural and aesthetic improvement. The CQY’s Board of Directors and management team are 100% committed to the success of the Central Queens Y, and believe that, with these major renovations, we will continue to accomplish our mission of building community and enhancing connection to Jewish life. Although construction will begin at the end of December, please note that CQY programming will continue as scheduled with the exception of our Aquatics programs. Programs that use the first floor will be relocated as needed. Our swimming pool will not be accessible for the duration of the renovations so, for your convenience, we have made accommodations with the Forest Hills Jewish Center to provide you with opportunities to swim during this time period. A modified pool usage schedule for the renovation period will be posted to our website and available to all members at the Front Desk. Our group fitness program will keep its schedule of over 30 classes. Leagues, After-School programs, enrichment classes, the Early Childhood Center, Library programs, adult and senior classes, Silver Sneakers, babysitting, and all of the programming you know and love at the CQY will continue throughout this period. So what changes should you expect? • The pool will not be accessible to members beginning December 22. We anticipate reopening the pool in February. • In the event of any construction delay, fitness classes ordinarily held in the MPR will be moved into the Gym and/or the Fourth Floor Studio during the period of January 4–9. • Access to certain entrances may be limited during December 22–January 9. • Limited access to the first floor will occur during the week of December 22, with members using the Gym as an access to the building. • Please note that restrooms will always be available to members, and signage both inside and outside the facility will keep you safe and informed. If you have any other questions, please check out our renovation page on our website at www.cqy.org/renovations. You may also feel free to reach out to us at any time, at 718.268.5011 ext. 131; please direct your questions to Rory Hersch, our Director of Membership and Community Outreach, who will be happy to assist you with concerns. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we embark on this journey to better our home and yours. We’ll explore how, as beautiful secular European art flourished, with artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer in the north and Caravaggio in the south, it also reflected the major transformation of Europe in terms of the Church, the Reformation, the state, humanism, and commerce. We’ll understand how even great art reflects the era in which it is made by expressing aspirations, goals, and worldviews, and even how art and artists have been used as tools for power and change. Matthew Fischer has an MFA in Visual Art from Columbia University School of the Arts and has taught Art and Art History at Columbia University and the 92nd Street Y. 4 alt. Tues., beg. The Book of Ecclesisastes: Trying to Make Sense of Life Kohelet, or Ecclesiastes, is a Biblical book of “practical wisdom,” similar to the Book of Proverbs, which we studied in the spring of 2014. The Book of Ecclesiastes is a deeply spiritual and honest search for the meaning of life. The author of the book, Kohelet, possibly an old man, reviews his life as he contemplates his own mortality, and struggles with the “slings and arrows” of life, veering between skepticism and faith. The human condition has not changed much since ancient times, so his insights – and the many traditional and modern commentators whom we shall examine – will provide much light for our own spiritual lives. A Reform rabbi, Rabbi Irwin Goldenberg also taught at Gettysburg & York Colleges. 9 Wed., beg. Lew Zuchman MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY FREEDOM RIDER FROM FOREST HILLS RECALLS HISTORIC JOURNEY Mon., Jan. 19, 1:30 p.m In 1961, black and white Freedom Riders traveled to the South to challenge local segregation laws. Their journey became one of the turning points in the civil rights movement when the activists were met with mob violence in Mississippi and Alabama. Astoundingly, more than half of the white Freedom Riders were Jewish, including one 19 year old from Forest Hills, named Lew Zuchman. Art Historian Noga Bernstein THE ART AND ARTISTS OF ISRAEL: WHAT’S ISRAELI (OR JEWISH) ABOUT ISRAELI ART? ON THE FRONTLINE OF HOPE: LESSONS FROM STUDENTS IN THE IBRAHIM MIDDLE EAST DIALOGUE PROGRAM Mon., Mar. 30, 1:30 p.m. Professor Mark Rosenblum and a panel of Queens College students will discuss their experiences in a unique program of interfaith dialogue in the Middle East. Prof. Rosenblum established a groundbreaking program at Queens College, Walking in the Other Side’s Shoes, which seeks to foster dialogue through better understanding of other viewpoints, focusing on Muslim-Jewish dialogue. Last summer Prof. Rosenblum led a group of student leaders from across the United States in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet with political, religious, and cultural leaders and grassroots activists in the Middle East, visiting not only Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, but also the Palestinian territories and Oman. What are their thoughts on this experience and their plans for the future? SAVE THE DATE!
