IN THIS ISSUE
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
With the indoor USAV club season well underway and the beach season right around
the corner, your Florida Region staff is staying very busy managing all aspects of USA
Volleyball here in Florida. Speaking of staff, I am pleased to welcome our new
Outdoor Events Manager, Chris Hamilton. Chris joined us at the beginning of January
and fills an important vacancy for our growing outdoor department. With the addition
of our new Hickory Point Beach sand volleyball complex last year, Chris arrived to a full
project list and will lead the way for many new outdoor events and programs in
2015. He is a former Open beach player and has extensive business and financial
management experience.
Additionally, we have a new college intern. Her name is Catherine Coston and she is
finishing up her senior year at Stetson University. Catherine plays for the sand
volleyball team at Stetson and will be a great addition to our Florida Region team. She
will be working with our Florida WAVE, our new Sitting VB initiative, assist with our
Team Florida HP All-Star programs (indoor & beach), work at indoor and outdoor
events, and assist me with the growing PVL.
We have several exciting announcements in the works and you can expect to hear
them first if you like us on Facebook (FloridaRegion) or follow us on Twitter
(@FloridaRegion). One of the upcoming announcements will introduce our new WFVN
(Florida Volleyball Network) Channel 14 news broadcast. Once a month we will bring
you the biggest Florida Region news via our YouTube channel broadcast. Tune in to
meet your co-hosts, Don Burgundy and Veronica Morningstone and stay up to the
minute with news from reporter in the field Diane Fantana. It will be a fun way to get
your Florida volleyball news and we hope that you will tune in and watch.

A QUICK NOTE ABOUT THE
UNIFORM POLICY…
By Sue Wainio-Oato, Official’s Coordinator
2015 Uniform Rules Defined: Legal, Compliant, Predominant,
Contrasting
New this year we have four definitions to deal with when looking
at team uniforms: Legal, compliant, predominant and contrasting.
What is the difference, you ask? Well, here are some of the
answers!
Uniforms must be legal, in that they must comply with the rules
and USAV modifications found in section 4.3 of the DCR (Rule
book.) Look on pages 17 and 18. Don’t have a rule book? Click
here to read. This part of the rule has not changed.
Uniforms must be compliant with the new solid-color jersey rule,
which states that it is required that either the Libero or their
teammates wear a solid color jersey. The solid color jersey must
clearly contrast from the predominant color(s) of the teammates’
jersey. Predominant colors are those that appear on
approximately half of the body of the uniform jersey.
To be considered solid colored:
a. Sleeves must be the same color as the body of the jersey.
b. Piping/trim not exceeding 1 inch in total at its widest point may
be placed
along the seams and may be a different color than the uniform
jersey.
c. Lettering and collars can be a different color than the body of
the jersey.
d. Numbers must be a contrasting color and meet all other
specifications in Rule 4.3.3 and associated USAV regulations.
WFVN CHANNEL 14 NEWS…
There are more details to the solid color rule that pertain to logo,
lettering and mascots. This information can be found on
www.volleyballreftraining.com in the Solid Color Jersey
PowerPoint presentation. It is well worth the time to view it!
Clarification memos for this season are available here.
Contrasting means that the colors, technically, are from opposite
sides of the color wheel, but if you don’t carry one of those in
your gym bag, then know that colors such as purple and black,
navy and black, green and black, maroon and navy, yellow and
white are not distinctive enough to be contrasting. Examples of
contrasting colors are red and green, blue and orange, yellow
and purple, to name a few, and in general, dark vs. light.
It is important to note here that any jersey that was legal last year
will still be a legal jersey this year; it just may not be compliant as
a solid colored jersey. That means that either the team or the
Libero could still wear any jersey that was legal last year, the only
difference is that now the opposite jersey (worn by either the
Libero or the rest of the team) would need to be compliant as a
solid colored jersey.
The new rules will be enforced in Florida region play, as well as at
all USAV sanctioned national qualifiers and championships.
The wait is over! The Florida Volleyball Network brings you
the January episode of Channel 14 News! Anchors Don and
Veronica discuss the big events and issues that affect all
Florida Region members. Stay tuned for a new episode
every month!

QUICK TIP FOR COACHES…
When traveling locally for practice and competition:




Review and enforce policy on local travel.
No coach, staff member, or volunteer should drive
athletes to or from practice and competition without
consent from the athlete’s parents.
Make parents aware that they are the ones
responsible for their child’s travel arrangements to
practice and local competitions.
Coaches who provide car pool rides should also
have a child on the team that is included in the
transportation. Those coaches are acting as parents
during local travel and should always pick up their
own child first and drop their child off last.
