Melbourne Festival in association with Monash University Museum of Art presents ART AS A VERB Commissioning Curator Charlotte Day “Instead of painting, move your arms; instead of music, make noise. I’m giving up painting and all the arts by doing everything and anything.” Allan Kaprow There is no such thing as passive art; all art is a disruption, and all disruption is a catalyst for new ideas and experiences. Art as a Verb interrogates the idea of art as a participatory medium – a form of action that strikes beyond the bounds of the frame. Drawing together a rich history of challenges, happenings, performances and disturbances from the art world’s most celebrated provocateurs – including Allan Kaprow, Marina Abramović, Yoko Ono, Martin Creed, Bas Jan Ader – Art as a Verb shines a blazing light on modern art’s most pivotal question: in the new century, is the artist still capable of starting a revolution? Art as a Verb will feature documentation of actions and performances, situational pieces and instructional works such as rule books, manifestoes and self-‐help guides, alongside a program of live events.
